Overall Rating

Nissan has tried to make it look distinguished up to some extent. Despite its controversial design, the 2017 Juke is fun in the driver seat and turns out to be a leading performer in the compact crossover segment. The Nissan Juke is one of the top performers in the class. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine yields 188 horsepower and brisk acceleration, whether from a stop or on the highway. Additionally, turbo lag is virtually nonexistent in the Juke.

The Juke’s impressive performance doesn’t end with its power, the suspension makes the handling easier when the road drifts and the 7-inch ground clearance facilitates off-road delight. The only downside with the Juke is its interior space. The cabin space can be seen compromised with the spunky design in this Nissan. Cool looks are fine, but the scarcity of cabin volume is something unacceptable

We would recommend the 2017 Nissan Juke SV with an all-wheel drive. The price is slightly higher than the outgoing trim, but you get hefty features at the same. You can now avail of heated front seats and heated outside mirrors as standard. The 2017 Nissan Juke has nearly unrivaled performance dynamics, but its harsh ride, limited cabin and cargo space, and cut-rate cabin materials keep it in the middle of the subcompact class.

2017 Nissan Juke Review

Pros

  • Potent turbocharged engine
  • Athletic handling

Cons

  • Small rear seat and cargo area
  • Low-rent interior
  • Requires premium fuel

Nissan has tried to make it look distinguished up to some extent. Despite its controversial design, the 2017 Juke is fun in the driver seat and turns out to be a leading performer in the compact crossover segment.

Overview

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The Juke comes in 3 trims: base S, SV, and SL. All the trims are powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The engine is further mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and available in the standard front-wheel drive.

Nissan has provided various options depending on the trim level. The options include interior illumination details, center armrest, and alternate wheels. There's also Juke Color Studio, which allows you to customize your Jukes exterior/interior with various mix and match of color accents.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

Under the hood, the Nissan is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 188 horsepower along with 177 lb-ft of torque. Standard Transmission is a CVT automatic. The Nismo models come with a standard six-speed manual transmission.

The Nismo RS churns out a maximum power of 215 horsepower. This is perhaps the highest power output among the competitors. Kia Soul manages to make only 130 ho with its 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gas engine, while the C-HR makes 144-hp with its 2.0-liter 4-cylinder DOHC engine.

The 2017 Nissan Juke delivers excellent performance and is very fun to drive. A standard turbocharged engine boasts strong acceleration and power, and fuel economy is high for the class. Handing is nimble and athletic, but ride quality is uncomfortable. Two performance-oriented NISMO models have tuned suspensions, steering, and brakes, while one has a more powerful engine.

2017 Nissan Juke Acceleration

The Juke's engine offers sufficient power to accelerate it smoothly. All the trims get adaptive steering and transmission modes to control the crossover's drivability. Turbo lag can be avoided with the low-end power and steady increase through the rev cycle. It takes only 7.4 seconds to sprint from zero to 60 mph. While the competitors fail to compete. Toyota C-HR turns out to be disappointing on the acceleration part.

The 2017 Juke comes standard with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 188 horsepower. Front-wheel drive and a CVT, which acts like an automatic, are also standard. All-wheel drive is optional. NISMO models have a standard six-speed manual transmission, and the CVT is optional. The NISMO RS comes with a 215-horsepower version of the standard engine.

2017 Nissan Juke Ride and Handling

The hatch scores will be in the handling and drivability part. Though it's a compact SUV, you may find that the car is easy to handle like a small sporty car. Its steering is precise and responsive all together, taking close cuts while cornering. On smooth surfaces, the juke mostly rides comfortably. The regular Jukes are fun to drive whereas the NISMO and NISMO RS models are more aggressive in this regard as these are performance models.

The Juke has a stiff suspension and overall athletic handling. It corners easily but stays stable around turns. Steering is direct and precise, and it delivers good feedback from the road. Ride quality is rough over uneven pavement, and there is noticeable noise at high speeds.

2017 Nissan Juke Braking

Braking is supplied by power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The 2017 Nissan Juke has impressive braking power.

This is partly due to the fact that the ride has a compact and lightweight build.

The 2017 Nissan Juke manages to be fairly fuel-efficient as a sporty ride, or reasonably thirsty for a tall hatchback. Your worldview dictates a lot here. The Juke manages 28 mpg city, 32 highway, 29 combined with an automatic transmission and front-drive. That's the model that more buyers are likely to pick up.

Interior
6.0/10

The cabin gets some basic cheap plastic material all around. You'll get an optional central armrest and there's no center armrest provided. The front seats appear superb, and so is the steering wheels, which comes with leather upholstery.

There's plenty of headroom in the front, while the rear becomes narrow due to the sloping roof. All the rivals in the segment offer similar passenger volume, only the Kia Soul turns out to be spacious in this regard.

The Juke's fun exterior writes a check that its cramped interior is apparently cashing. Compared to other crossovers, the Juke is small and less functional. Its cargo area is smaller than many sedans' trunks, and rear-seat passengers need to be on the small side legroom, and headroom is relatively compromised.

2017 Nissan Juke Infotainment System

Most of the audio and climate controls are easy to reach from the driver seat. The infotainment system is offered in trims above the base model. With the infotainment, you can access social media, internet radio, and satellite radio-linked traffic and weather.

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input

  • MP3 Player
  • Wireless Cell Phone Hookup

2017 Nissan Juke Cargo Space

The compact SUV offers little cargo volume due to the funky design inside-out. It offers mere 10.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which is smaller than most of the crossovers on the segment. After folding the second-row seat, you can expand the cargo room to 35.9 cubic feet. The Kia Souls holds a cavernous cargo that gives you 61.2 cubic feet (with the second-row seat folded).

Compared to many of the Juke's likely subcompact crossover competitors—such as the Chevy Trax, Honda HR-V, Fiat 500X, Mazda CX-3, or Subaru Crosstrek—the Nissan is the least practical of the bunch. Its cargo space isn't all that impressive for a hatchback, nor is its ability to seat five adults in a cramped back seat.

Exterior
6.8/10

The Nissan Juke is one of those rare cars that actually catches your eyes. There's no other car like Juke, this is all that makes it unique. The unique crossover wears a distinct shape with stand out styling. It comes in nine colors that can give extra excitement to your personality. Lengthwise, the C-HR is longer than the Juke.

The Nissan Juke is unconditional, unparalleled, and funky from all sides. It wears high wheel arches and an even higher beltline that amplifies its exterior styling. The front fascia is outrageous with streaking headlamps, while the rear looks tucked. Meanwhile, from the side profile, the roofline moves rearward, with integrated rear-door handles. The Nismo variants sport aerodynamic body kit, while the top-of-the-lineup Nismo RS boasts red brake calipers.

Safety
7.9/10

It is covered by a three-year/36,000-mile general warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile engine warranty. There are few active safety features in the Juke. A rearview camera comes standard. The only other driver assistance feature is an available 360-degree camera, which uses four cameras to create a top-down view of the vehicle’s surroundings. Many other subcompact SUVs offer additional safety options, like pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision alert. Below are some of the safety features in the new Nissan Juke:

  • Nissan Advanced Airbag System with dual-stage supplemental front airbags with seat belt and occupant- classification sensors
  • Driver and front passenger seat-mounted side-impact supplemental airbags
  • Roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental airbags for front and rear-seat outboard occupants head protection
  • Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS)
  • 3-point ALR/ELR passenger seat belt system (ELR for the driver)
  • High-strength steel side-door guard beams
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) display
  • LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren)
  • Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones

Competition
6.0/10

Nissan Juke vs Toyota C-HR

The Toyota C-HR is wider than the Nissan Juke. So, with the Nissan Juke, you'll find it easy to get in or out of your car in a tight parking spot. With higher torque, Juke transmits more power to its wheels than the Toyota. The Juke offers a larger turning radius than the C-HR, making it hard to maneuver in narrow spots.

Nissan Juke vs Kia Soul

The Kia Soul is a funky compact car. While the comparison can be for namesake, but the hatch can be a better buy against the Nissan Juke. Its boxy design allows more cargo area. Its total cargo space outclasses major subcompact SUV, and it is twice the space offered by the Juke. The rear seat of Juke is nothing more to use other than cargo.

The Soul has also been priced competitively. It costs $4000 less than the Juke. The base model is priced at $16,100. The only downside with the car is that it can't be fitted with all-wheel drive like the Juke.

Nissan Juke vs Mazda CX-3

The new Mazda CX-3 is not generous with its cabin space but still manages to provide more space than the Juke. The CX-3 really does well with the driver assistance features. The CX-3 holds abundant advanced features. The CX-3 has scored five-star overall ratings in the NHTSA crash tests.

The CX-3 starts below $20,000, and the top trim stays below $25,000. Whereas the base Juke is priced at $20,250, and the top trim exceeds $30,000. No matter how much money you spend on buying a new Juke, you can't get advanced features like Mazda CX-3.

Final Verdict

The only reason to opt for the 2017 Nissan Juke is if you really are fantasized about its funky and sporty attire. It's definitely a fun crossover to drive, but the passenger space is actually cramped up. The sport suspension is great to make your daily commuting well off. And you can't really measure Juke's potential. The turbocharged engine is well-tuned to prevent any turbo lag and the engine does return dome good mileage in comparison to the rivals.

You may not get fully protected as the dismal crash test ratings and lack of advanced safety features reveal. If you are buying a Juke just because you want to look distinguished from others on the street, consider the boxy Kia Soul and Mazda CX-3. There are other numerous better vehicles that offer best-in-class safety features and interior space.
