Overall Rating
The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible is a brilliant German sports car that tries its best to offer the best of both worlds- power and performance. For the 2017 model year it comes as a mid-cycle refresh and Porsche offers new turbocharged motors.
Ever since the time Porsche brought the first-ever 718 Boxster in the market, it has been a prominent car in a car buyer's list. And this version of the Boxster is no different. This car, like its predecessors, is obviously going to be a hit and compete with the likes of the Audi TT Coupe, the BMW 230i Coupe, and the Mercedes Benz C3000 4Matic.
However, with a price starting at $56,000, the Porsche may be significantly more expensive than the rest, but with this price comes a much-refined engine and loads of additional features.
Among the two trims we would recommend you to go for the base trim since it already comes in quite a loaded form and the price will go up eventually as you start to opt for additional extras to equip your car better.

The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible is available in two versions. Both of them offer a similar 2.0-liter Turbocharged engine with 4-cylinders which give massive torque and power output.
With a similar engine, the only difference between the two versions is the Sport mode and the regular mode. The sports mode gets a much more refined engine, one which is fuel-thirsty, as it is based on the sport concept, while the regular one is much more maligned.

We recommend
Among the two trims we would recommend you to go for the base trim since it already comes in quite a loaded form and the price will go up eventually as you start to opt for additional extras to equip your car better.
The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible is powered by a 2.0-liter Turbocharged 4-cylinder direct injection Engine which produces 300 hp and 280 lb.-ft, coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard or the iconic 7-speed automatic dual-clutch. You can also opt for a beefier 350hp 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. The new engine is expected to be better fuel-efficient than the previous one, and one has to say that the difference is clearly visible.

All the four rivals have a similar capacity 2.0-liter engine; however, the power generation of the Porsche is much higher than the rest, as mentioned earlier.
The Porsche engine is all class here, reaching the speed of 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and covering a quarter-mile in 12.0 seconds. Both the figures are, as expected, best in class.

The rivals play catch-up under this parameter with the Audi a close second, while the Mercedes is a distant fourth. The Audi perfectly fits itself in the middle.
The new version of the Boxster does come with the old suspension setup, something you cannot complain about. The power steering has been worked upon. It does get much better driver feedback now. The car is agile around the corners too and handles decently on the bad roads too. The tires are wider now providing more grip while cornering and keeping the car planted at higher speeds.
The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible does have the brakes to match its acceleration. This car requires an impressive short distance of 99.8 feet to stop from 60 mph. The Boxster is the lightest car among the rivals which also adds to its braking performance.

The heaviest vehicle on the list, the Mercedes Benz C 300, takes the longest to stop, while the Audi and the BMW are pretty much similar at 105 feet.
The new and refined engine does what was expected from it. With a city mileage of 21 mpg and that of 28mpg on the highway, the fuel economy of the Porsche 718 Boxster has improved leaps and bounds as compared to the previous versions.

However, the Porsche is still the least efficient vehicle here, although not by much with the BMW being the best at returning 27 mpg of combined mileage. The rest are similar with a difference of 1 mpg with one another.
The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible is a sports car that can accommodate just 2 passengers. The interiors of this Porsche are something you would expect from the brand, a plush and luxurious cabin with plenty of leather treatment all around.

The seats are leather cushioned which can be electrically adjusted. It has got a sporty feel to it as well, as the way it is designed. The comfort factor is somewhat missing, but that is what is expected of a sports car, isn't it!
The interior features include:
The Porsche Boxster comes standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is quite smooth and easy to use. It provides a great user interface, coupled with excellent sound output and is loaded with several useful connectivity features as well. Some of the features of the Infotainment system are:
The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible has a spacious trunk. There is no load lip to lift the baggage. The storage spaces are excellent with a 12V socket as well. The rear seats are foldable.

The BMW 230i coupe is the best here as well, with the Porsche a distant second. The Mercedes and the BMW are close behind the Boxster.
The stylish and sleek looking Porsche 718 does have exteriors of the highest quality. It also has somewhat the best dimensions amongst its rivals, along with the Mercedes Benz.

The compact looking Porsche does well under all parameters, sans the ground clearance column, where it is the worst and that too by a big margin when the best is considered. With 4.3 inches of clearance, this is something where the Porsche's team definitely needs a look in.
Some of the exterior features include:
Porsche has never compromised on the safety aspect of its vehicles and being a German brand, they do focus on building safe and superbly built cars and SUVs. The 718 Boxster also comes with a slew of safety features and is built to last. The IIHS and the NHTSA have not yet rated the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible. The various safety features in the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible are:
Let's be honest, the Porsche has far more advantages than the Audi. Although the engine and power generation is the same, the Audi acceleration cannot be left behind. It also has a much roomier and spacious cabin than the Audi.
The Audi is although the bigger car, the underrated Interiors come to the fore for the Porsche. It does have a much bigger trunk too, making the Porsche the deserved winner.
The Porsche and the BMW have almost the same engine specifications, and while the Porsche does have a better pickup and acceleration along with braking, an $18,000 price difference is too big a difference to ignore. The BMW does have a roomier cabin too.
So, with such a big price difference and the fact that the BMW does score on practicality, it will be seen as the obvious pick amongst the two heavyweights.
Again like the other two, the engine of the Porsche 718 Boxster and the Mercedes Benz C 3000 Coupe are similar. But sad to say, that is the only parameter where the Mercedes C 300 does well to compete with the likes of the Audi and the BMW.
Acceleration, pickup, braking, trunk space, you name it and the Porsche win it big time! The only consolation for the Mercedes Benz is that it does have better interior comfort. However, at not much a price difference, the Porsche 718 Boxster is the obvious pick out of the two.
The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible may be too expensive for some people's liking and may not score enough in terms of interior comfort. However, it does have a much lively and refined engine which gives a true drive experience that you expect of a Porsche. However, the moment one looks at the rivals, the BMW 230i seems a much more practical option with its price range and the all-round package it offers. So, if a Sports car is a need and money is a problem, the BMW 230i is the car for you, while a much more flamboyant pick would be the Porsche 718 Boxster convertible.
