It is followed by the Mercedes Benz GLC 300 with 241 hp, the BMW X4 xDrive 28i making 240 hp, and the Audi Q5 making 220 hp. The Mercedes-Benz, however, comes with an impeccable 9-speed gearbox that keeps revs at the right RPMs and offers excellent shifting response.

The Macan S, expectedly, puts down better numbers, but not too off from those of the base Macan. Given its size and caliber, the Macan stands as an incredibly quick SUV, delivering performance numbers at par with some of the best sports cars in the market today. 

The Porsche Macan has the best 0-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds. It is followed by the Audi and the BMW with only a millisecond separating them, 5.9 seconds and 6.0 seconds respectively. The Mercedes-Benz turns out to be the slowest in its initial acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds.

The power and the agility of the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV would be all in vain if it wasn't for its all-rounded presence on the road. The ride quality is carefully controlled and very smooth. You wouldn't feel the bumps from the road and the wonderful suspension handles it before it can reach the cabin.

The low center of gravity contributes to its better road grip and gives a stable and planted feel while taking corners. The steering is extremely accurate and highly responsive in spite of being a little lighter. Body roll is extremely limited, and one can genuinely push the Macan to its limits without the SUV running out of breath.

The Porsche Macan comes with disc brakes on all four wheels with 14.2-inch rotors on the front and 13.0-inch rotors on the rear. The 2017 Porsche Macan offers rather underwhelming fuel economy figures for a compact SUV. The Porsche Macan returns 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.  The result is a combined mpg of 22, which is fairly average. The Macan also has a fuel capacity of 19.8 gallons, which enables the German SUV a range of 337 miles in the city for 155 miles on the highway and a combined range of 435 miles. All in all, fuel economy isn't particularly impressive, as competitors manage to return much more value in this regard. 

In terms of combined range the most are given by the Porsche and Audi at 435 miles, then comes the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 with a range of 417 miles followed by the BMW X4, with a range of 407 miles. Additionally, both the Porsche and the Audi come with the largest fuel tanks. However, the Porsche offers a depressing city fuel economy of just 17 mpg while it's BMW and Audi counterparts manage at least 20 mpg. The Mercedes-Benz GCL 300 stands as the most fuel-efficient, offering the highest mpg figures among the competition.  

The interior of the Porsche Macan is plush and cushy, while managing to seat five occupants comfortably. The front seats are offered with 8-way manual adjustment and can be upgraded to the power-adjustable version for a small charge. The seats can also have heating and ventilation functions, which are available as options. 

Partial leather upholstery is standard and is available in a few colors. It can be upgraded to leather and even club leather and both available in multiple color options to suit your taste. There is the option to even get colored stitching and even two-tone interiors. There is three-zone climate control as standard included in the Porsche. The materials undoubtedly feel very high-quality, and all the switchgear in the cabin feels rigid and expensive. All in all, the feel of the cabin reminds you of the Cayenne, and that needs to be taken as a compliment. We certainly found little to complain about.  

In terms of the front passengers, the BMW has the most headroom while the Mercedes-Benz lacks in that aspect. The Audi boasts spacious legroom while the BMW suffers now. As for the rear passengers, the Audi enjoys a spacious headroom and legroom while the BMW falls behind with the least headroom and legroom. In terms of sheer numbers, the Macan's low cargo capacity is certainly a disappointment, as the compact SUV otherwise makes for an outstanding weekend-getaway vehicle. 

With the rear seats up, the Audi houses the most spacious cargo volumes of 29.1 cubic feet while the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV and the BMW share the lowest of 17.7 cubic feet. When the rear seats are folded, the Audi still maintains by being the most spacious with 57.3 cubic feet and the BMW still falls behind with 49.4 cubic feet. The 2017 Porsche Macan SUV manages to do a little better than BMW by housing 53 cubic feet of cargo volume.

The Porsche Macan looks like the smaller brother of the Porsche Cayenne, sharing the design theme and even the silhouette with the latter. The Macan, however, is much smaller than the Cayenne but still looks tough and the slightly flared fenders show that. The exterior flaunts features such as LED lights, a panoramic roof, silver exterior trim which can be changed to black, Porsche’s full paint options, and 18-inch wheels which can be upgraded to 20-inch wheels. 

The Macan's compact yet exaggerated proportions command a good deal of road presence. The front end is aggressive enough to portray the Macan's potency on the limit. The rear, however, feels sophisticated and understated, which definitely highlights the subtler facets of the Macan's personality. All in all, the 2017 Porsche Macan is a handsome-looking vehicle, which definitely comes as better looking than most of its awkwardly designed competitors.  

The only thing the 2017 Porsche Macan stands as the widest car in the lot, and also it is the second-longest among the competiton. The Mercedes Benz has the least ground clearance and the longest wheelbase. The Audi Q5 is the heaviest of the above cars whereas the Porsche is 300 pounds higher.

The NHTSA has not yet crash-tested the new Porsche Macan. Like the NHTSA, the IIHS has also not had the opportunity to assess the 2017 Porsche Macan. However, Porsche does offer incredible safety features with the Macan focused on keeping the occupants safe. The Macan comes with several passive and active safety aids which help in establishing the Porsche SUV's occupant-protection merit. The 2017 Porsche Macan gets several advanced safety features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Roll Control System and Lane Departure Warning. The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 is a highly competent crossover and features luxurious interiors standard to its class. In comparison to the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV, the Mercedes has a slightly less powerful engine and poor acceleration but it impresses with its braking and fuel economy, and cargo space as well.

Audi Q5 Premium vs Porsche Macan 

The handsomely styled Audi Q5 is all about its quiet and comfortable ride amalgamated with its premium looks. When compared to the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV, there is a lack of performance, its braking is better as well and so is the fuel economy and cargo space. Also, the Q5 is the sales leader showing how popular the car is. You cannot go wrong with either car.

BMW X4 xDrive 28i vs Porsche Macan 

The fast and low-roofed BMW X4 is quick because of its two engine choices between the Inline-4 and the Inline-6. Up against the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV, it lacks behind in engine performance, acceleration, braking, and cargo space as well but has a slightly better fuel economy making the Porsche the winner of this battle.

The 2017 Porsche Macan is on the unorthodox end of the SUV class, as it is sportier and quicker but lacks practicality. It performs well up against its rivals and doesn't demean the Porsche legacy. The standard features can be increased rather than making them optional. With these little bits and tweaks, the 2017 Porsche Macan is a go-go. The Macan does however falter when it comes to real-world requirements, such as cargo space and fuel economy. While what is offered isn't exactly bad, the Macan's competition just manages to offer better value in places where the Porsche lags behind. However, the Macan comfortably outranks its rivals in terms of sheer driving pleasure. We also love that Porsche hasn't compromised the SUV's composure inside the cabin, thanks to comfortable seats and plenty of high-end features on offer. All in all, we strongly feel that the 2017 Porsche Macan's higher price tag seems entirely justified, and you should definitely consider getting one if you're looking for a vehicle in this segment.
