Overall Rating
RAM's cargo van is that elderly person from your neighborhood who can seat more than the fit muscle-heads proved unable. With years of research and development, the ProMaster cargo is currently an accomplished contender, furnishing the best with not many overhauls. There is no uncertainty that there are greatly improved alternatives, yet dependability is one key factor that is keeping the RAM alive.

Starting at $32,685, the new RAM ProMaster Cargo Van is a cheap option and a reliable one too. Thirty years down the line and there is nothing new to observe in this van, not even a cosmetic facelift. There are some engine upgrades, ProMaster cargo is now available with a 3.6L V6, which can churn 280hp of power and 268ft-lbs of torque.
There is not much to choose from as the 2017 Ram ProMaster comes in only one trim. However, you can choose an optional interior Convenience package that adds an overhead shelf, under-seat storage tray, and locking glove box. If you are interested in loading your cargo truck with modern tech, you can also opt for UConnect 5.0 touchscreen, which is a proven user-friendly system and will definitely add a touch of class to the dashboard

The Ram ProMaster cargo van comes standard with a 3.6L V6 engine that produces 260 ft-lbs. at 4175 rpm and a 280 hp at 6400 rpm. The engine feels peppy and carries the loaded van without breaking a sweat. The 3.6L engine comes mated to a six-speed automatic. The transmission just gets the job done, to say the least. It feels sluggish at times, especially during the time when the van is loaded.

In the engine department, the GMC Savana cargo has a clear upper-hand over all its rivals. The GMC Savana comes with a gem of an engine with 4.8L V8 and even undercuts all its rivals in terms of pricing.
Nobody buys a van for Drag Races. Still. Nobody said that even in a cargo van you must be the last one to move when the light turns green. ProMaster takes just 7.7 seconds to reach 60MPH, which is pretty impressive. The throttle response is quite formidable even when you load it to its best of capacities, although there might be some lightness in acceleration.

There is only one thing interesting to notice in the competition. That is the time a well crafted Mercedes-Benz takes to crawl, literally CRAWL up to 60 MPH from rest. On the other hand, with 7.5 seconds in its lap, the Ford Transit justifies the use of a bigger engine block. Whereas, the old school Savana remains the unsatisfactory kid in the classroom.
The Ram ProMaster Cargo van gives us something unique, the short hood. Thanks to it, you sit in a very confidence-inspiring position, and hence, maneuvering this van in city traffic becomes a piece of cake, especially due to the short turning radius. There aren’t many blind spots around the vehicle too, given the straightforward boxed design of the van.
Height is something you have to stay aware of, especially on highways. Although the steering is light and effortless to use, there are quite a lot of vertical moments when the van is unloaded, but that is something you'll expect from a cargo van. Apart from this, the van handles well and you'll be comfortable doing daily delivery duties.
In the 2017 Ram ProMaster cargo van, you get a 4-wheel disc brake setup. The brake feels progressive and inspires confidence. However, if the van is loaded then it tends to wobble a bit which can be unnerving.

Again, the GMC Savana cargo van triumphs everyone In the brake and feel department. It gives you the largest discs all around. Even after being the heaviest of the lot, the savanna cargo stops steadily.
It's highly uncommon for vans to be used for towing weight, but given their capabilities, it is not something that cannot be pulled off. If equipped likewise the Ram ProMaster cargo van can tow up to 5100lbs, which is not the best one can do with so much heft and muscle. However, the real beast in towing is the GMC Savana cargo which tows 10000lbs.

Going old school will help you at times like these when you need to pull another stagnant vehicle off the road. The towing capacity of the Savana cargo can put a lot of pickup trucks from higher segments to shame.
Commercial vans like the 2017 Ram ProMaster cargo van are not subject to the conventional fuel economy testing by the Environmental Protection Agency and do not have published EPA mpg ratings. However, you can expect the ProMaster to return a combined MPG of 17, which is based on the past experiences of vehicle owners. But, given the research that goes in every year, it is alright to keep some hopes for a better economy.

As expected, there are no figures and stats to compare these vans in this category. But, what can be observed is that the ProMaster is the “Master” in this respect with a better-expected economy than its rivals, even the Savanna.
FUNCTIONAL! That sums up the interiors of the 2017 Ram ProMaster cargo van. Getting in and out is a breeze, especially with the optional sliding doors. The all-back dashboard is laid out nicely keeping ergonomics in mind. A big commercial van is for work boots and old gloves, but the 2017 Ram ProMaster still delivers on comfort and convenience. An available suspension-enhanced driver's seat provides long-haul comfort, and available swiveling seats ease access to the rear.

There are a lot of cubby holes to keep your things. The gear-lever is placed on the dashboard right next to climate control. The gauges are large and clear and you do get a multi-information display placed in the center of the console. Other Seating options include:
In the Ram ProMaster cargo, you get a 4-speaker audio system with USB and Auxiliary inputs. This basic system is best for those who like no-nonsense things. However, if you are into modern tech, you can upgrade to the Uconnect 5.0 touchscreen system. Other infotainment features include (for Uconnect 5.0)
The department where the Ram ProMaster cargo van outshines every van in the competition is the cargo volume. At 406 cubic ft., the cargo volume of the ProMaster is almost double what its competitors offer.

One of the advantages of its unique design, the ProMaster has the largest storage cabin in the class, and getting it at this low price is quite formidable. It's one of the reasons the ProMaster has been so successful in the yesteryears. Nevertheless, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter follows it with a 319 ft.3 of volume in the rear.
The Ram ProMaster cargo looks comical, to say the least. The face looks like an Anime character. The slanted front with a large bumper looks odd. At the rear, things do get better as it looks like a conventional van. Ram ProMaster lineup offers good utility, as long as you're not looking for any semblance of style.

The ProMaster cargo definitely has the weight advantage over its rivals at 4,773 lbs. This cargo van is not only the lightest but also the widest. So, if only practicality is your need, then this is the right van for you. Exterior features include:
Commercial cargo vans like the ProMaster are not tested by NHTSA or IIHSA. Although, the Ram ProMaster cargo comes with a host of safety features to keep safety in check under almost all circumstances. On the reliability front, the Ram offers 3 year-36000 miles overall warranty on their cargo van. Some of the safety features in the 2017 Ram ProMaster Cargo Van are:
If you buy something with a Mercedes-Benz badge on it, then expect it to be reliable, and built-to-last, the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo is just that. The plastics qualities are best in class, and so is the refinement levels and equipment quality.
However, the Sprinter cargo comes at a premium price than the ProMaster cargo, but has almost 90hp less, smaller cargo, even the acceleration feels dull. So, move over the badge and
With 150 cubic ft. cargo space, better towing capacity, and better overall fuel economy, the ProMaster cargo is a better van than the new Ford Transit Cargo Van. However, the wide service network of Ford does make a difference.
The GMC Savana Cargo Van is the only car in this competition to offer a V8, despite having the bigger engine the car is priced cheaper than the ProMaster Cargo. The pulling capacity of the Savana cargo is 10000lbs which is double what you get in the ProMaster.
The Savanna even looks better than the ProMaster but the plastic quality might feel built-to-cost. The front-wheel-drive ProMaster drives better than the rear-wheel-drive Savana. But still, if towing and commercial work is your need, then the GMC Savana cargo is the van for you.
The 2017 Ram ProMaster cargo might look out of the world (in a bad way), but still, it offers tons and tons of practicality at a pretty reasonable price. The add-on packages are good, which means you can customize the van the way you want.
Although, if only practicality is not your thing, and you are buying a commercial van for daily use then the Mercedes Sprinter looks decent, and GMC Savana cargo offers the best engine and power.
