About 2017 Smart ForTwo electric

3.3

Overall Rating

There’s enough power for the streets, with 80 hp Electric Drive Motor. It has the ability to charge up in 3 hours on a 240V charging outlet. The acceleration from start still is impressive. The range though, is a questionable aspect.

Smart ForTwo is one of that little ape of the concrete jungle. Having fun, cute, and tiny dimensions that are matched by no one. The car has just the right zing with diminutive dimensions and electric drive for the escapades in the city. It could not make a good presence in the American market mostly because it could not compete with the other better EVs in the market. It can run for 58 miles with a full charge, and this indicates its range is not well enough. And in terms of practicality, it defames itself. As for the layout, it is a rear motor rear-wheel drive unit that is made in collaboration with Renault.

Pure Trim is the one to go for. Elimination of power-folding mirrors, heated seats, ambient interior lights to name a few, save the further energy reserves of the battery and increases the overall range of the car. For us, if you want the most out of this diminutive electric vehicle, Pure trim is to go with.

2017 Smart ForTwo electric Review

Pros

  • Quick and Immediate acceleration
  • Zippy and Snappy steering ability
  • Great space inside

Cons

  • Low Range
  • Cabriolet version is steeply priced
  • Interior Quality and Feel

Engine and Performance
5.2/10

Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is powered by an 80 hp electric motor propelling the rear wheels with effective torque of 118 lb-ft from zero rpm.

Top Speed is limited to 81 mph to optimize the effective range of the battery. 0 to 60 mph comes up in 11.5 seconds. The most fun part is the kind of surge it has till 30 mph.

Smart ForTwo andNissan Leaf here could be more sprightly. Fiat 500e beats both of them in terms of fun and driver's engagement with the car. It can be seen that only the Smart ForTwo is the only car among the rivals to feature a rear-wheel-drive layout, while both theFiat and Nissan have front-wheel drive.

Acceleration

ForTwo has quite a quick start off the line. The car does struggle after hitting 30 mph. It shows up quite imminently in its 0-60mph time. The Smart lacks in the acceleration segment as a compact where the Nissan and the Fiat as rivals perform much better. The hatchback takes 11.4 seconds to do 0-60mph, which increases up to 17.9 seconds for quarter-mile.

The Leaf has been long needing a powertrain upgrade, the weight of the car doesn't help it further. Fiat here is fast and almost feels like its gasoline-powered cousin, the 500. The ForTwo is good for the city, but for something like 0-60 mph, we'll suggest you avoid highway runs on it. When comparing the top speed, Fiat is the fastest with a top speed of 93 mph.

Braking

The car is a hoot to drive in tight city spaces. The 15" wheels on the extreme corners give the right kind of expanse to the vehicle. The steering is electrically assisted and could do a lot in terms of the feedback and feel. As far as the ease goes, it just matches what this car needs to be. Simple, Light, and Ready to move.

Brakes on the Smart ForTwo for the weight it possesses are a little underperforming. The Fiat 500e impresses in this case. Nissan's additional weight makes it take the most distance out of all to stop. With 11.0 and 8.0 inches of brakes at the front and rear, respectively, the hatchback takes 110 feet to reach a halt from 60 mph.

Fuel Economy
9.4/10

The 96 cell lithium-ion battery is situated under the seat in the ForTwo. Smart claims 2 to 3 hours of full charge at 240V. 120 V from household stretches this to over 16 hours. The claimed range of the ForTwo is 58 miles. In comparison to the rivals in the segment, the range of the ForTwo fails to make a mark.

Battery Range (Miles)

Thanks to the Nissan Leaf 30kWh battery pack being optimized very efficiently, it provides a range of over 107 miles. Fiat impresses with performance but not much with range as it only offers a range of 84 miles. ForTwo is very limited by the range it offers. It should only be confined to the city our team believes.

Interior
7.2/10

Seating is very comfortable in the ForTwo. One cannot judge the kind of space and ergonomics it offers. There is enough head and shoulder room. Putting down fabric roof in cabriolet version gives a better sense of spaciousness inside.

For a similar experience in the Coupe version, they offer a panoramic roof as an option. The crashy suspension makes you feel the smallest of bumps. The quick direction-changing ability ruins it even further. Overall it is fun looking inside as it is outside.

The Smart has pleasantly designed interiors. It does come with a lot of options and fabric color for the upholstery. They are further enhanced by accented ambient lighting. But the materials feel very plasticky and the switchgear isn't up to the mark. There are plenty of storage spaces but they aren't sized right. There's not such a problem in the comfort of the seats. Just because of a less plush suspension, the competition i.e. 500e and Leaf, feels far better in the ride. Major interior features include-

  • Bucket seats
  • Cloth upholstery
  • Keyless entry
  • Climate control
  • Steering wheel audio controls

Infotainment System

The infotainment system is aptly featured with Bluetooth connectivity, and the system itself can be controlled from the steering wheel. An extra dial sticking out from the dash gives a readout about the battery life. Various other features are part of this hatchback like auxiliary audio input, smart device integration, and more. Some of the infotainment features equipped in the Smart ForTwo are:

  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Smart device integration
  • Auxiliary audio input
  • MP3 Player
  • Hands-free calling

Cargo volume

There's enough cargo volume in Smart Fortwo to do city chores with ease. The charger cord in the boot eats up a little space. Smart interestingly has a split opening tailgate that can be further used as a bench. The lower bench has a further lid where you can store in more. The hatchback offers a cargo space of 22.8 cubic feet.

The Smart ForTwo is already a compact car, so cargo space is bound to get compensated. However, it still offers a cargo space of 22.8 cu-ft, which is second only to the segment highest Fiat 500e which has 28.1 cu-ft of space. The cargo space of Nissan Leaf is unavailable for making any comparison.

Exterior
5.2/10

Smart ForTwo has always been the one to stick to the micro-mini dimensions. They still were able to make it look wider and boxy than the model it replaces.

The range of colors and individual options are vast. The body color in contrast with the Tridion safety cell creates an interesting theme.

The Leaf is the properly sized car here that can easily seat 5. Fiat 500e is of the same dimensions as the gasoline-powered version of 500. But Smart here undercuts any possible popular hatchback dimension. With 2,363 lbs of curb weight, the hatchback is the lightest among the competition. Major exterior features include-

Some of the exterior features include:

  • 15-inch steel wheels
  • Black Grille
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Fog Lamps

Safety
9.1/10

The 2017 Smart ForTwo has been through the major crash-test conducted by both organizations. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety(IIHS) has rated it a Good overall rating. Even the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) has given it a 4-star overall rating out of five, which is very good for an electric compact hatchback. Apart from that, Smart has few pro-active safety features. Its frame is based on a "Tridion steel safety shell". A small energy-absorbing crumple zone at the front of the car lessens impacts. Some of the safety features included in this car are:

  • 8 Airbags

Competition
7.0/10

Smart ForTwo Drive vs. Fiat 500e

Fiat is far more fun and zippy car than Smart ForTwo. And it almost feels like the gasoline-powered 500. When comparing the power and torque output, Fiat 500e easily dominates the Smart.

If you can stretch up to 7 grand more, 500e is a better option. It even has a tad more range than the offer.

Smart ForTwo Electric Drive vs. Nissan Leaf

If Smart is a city car, the Leaf is a quintessential Electric Family car. A very practical buy, we must say. Nissan Leaf awaits a long-needed update.

Despite the needed update, Leaf has the potential to outnumber power and torque figures of Smart. Unless you can wait for the Leaf coming next year, this is still a practical buy.

Final Verdict

Smart ForTwo now is zingier with that electric drive. Even more so than its slow shifting petrol version. You can park this thing anywhere at will, in the tightest of spaces. The initial pull from the start line is great. The small dimensions help you to make it maneuver with ease. It's fun and its chic-looks grab eyes. Just its range and average performance is one concern. If you can overlook that part and if the city is your jungle, this is the car for you.
