About 2017 Tesla Model X electric

3.9

Overall Rating

The 2017 Tesla Model X SUV is an electric SUV that defines a class in itself with its luxuriousness and outstanding performance. Tesla has put in a lot of effort to make the Model X one of the safest passenger cars, and they have found success doing so. The EV has got some advanced active and passive safety features that many cars lack in its class. Let's see how it fares against the competition.

The 2017 Tesla Model X is a good family-friendly all-electric three-row SUV. Based on the Model S sedan, the new Model X offers seating for up to seven, impressive performance, and up to 295 miles of driving range. Tesla's advanced technology features like autonomous driving and a large 17-inch infotainment display are best in class. Available in 4 versions, the 2017 Model X prices start from $79,500 and go up to $140,000.

Built in California, the Model x accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. The base Model X 75D features a 75 kWh battery pack while theĀ 90D features a 90 kWh battery which further improves the driving range. Next-in-line 100D and P100D get 100 kWh battery. However, on the downside, the interior of the Tesla Model X lacks the luxury of the rivals. Read our expert review below to know more.

Among all the four trims of the 2017 Tesla Model X SUV, the 90D is the recommended one due to its fine balance of price and performance. It is advisable not to opt for the 22-inch wheel as it may hamper the ride quality. Add-ons like the High-Amperage Charge are a must for long-distance travel.

Tesla has put in a lot of effort to make the Model X one of the safest passenger cars, and they have found success doing so. Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2017 Tesla Model X has four different trim levels, and the number in the trim level denotes the battery size assigned to it. The entry-level 75D has a 75 kWh (kilowatt-hour) battery, the 90D has a 90-kWh battery, and the 100D & P100D has a 100-kWh battery where the P stands for performance. The MSRP of the 2017 Model X range from $79,500 for the 75D and goes up to $140,000 for the P100D.

Buying Advice

Among all the four trims of the 2017 Tesla Model X, the base 75D will be more than adequate for most shoppers. With its 75-kWh battery and 238-mile range, the Model X 75 D is more than adequate for daily driving. Also, for an entry-level model, it is fairly equipped. For under $80,000, you get a 17-inch touch screen, navigation, a panoramic front windshield, Falcon Wing rear doors, a proximity key, and an automatic liftgate among its standard inclusions. Though for maximum range, look for the Model X 100D which can drive up to 295 miles on a single charge.

Engine and Performance
9.2/10

The 2017 Tesla Model X SUV is powered by a high-efficiency battery, with size and performance depending on the trim level. The base Model X 75D has a 75kWh battery that can drive up to a range of 237 miles on a single charge. The base AWD Model X  gets 518 hp and 387 pound-feet of torque. For the 90D trim, Tesla offers a 90kWh battery that attains a top speed of 155 mph and covers a distance of 257 miles on a single charge. The 100kWh battery of the P100D trim generates 792 horsepower while having a range of 289 miles. For maximum range, the 100kWh battery of the 100D trim does the best job, delivering a range of 295 miles.

Given the electrical engine and single-speed transmission, the 2017 Model X has an instantaneous and outstanding acceleration record. The 75D and the 90D reach from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds and 3.5 seconds, respectively. Even though the 100D has a greater range than the P100D, the latter dominates the former with a scorching acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in a mere 2.9 seconds, making it the fastest among the four trims.

The 2017 Tesla Model X falls behind the rest in towing capacity due to its battery-based powertrain with adequate 5,000 pounds tow ratings. The 2017 Porsche Cayenne has the maximum capacity of 7,716 pounds, followed by the Audi and the Mercedes with 7,700 and 7,500 pounds, correspondingly. The transmission for all the trims of the 2017 Tesla Model X SUV is a standard single-speed automatic transmission with modes like Normal, Comfort, and Sport that works very well with the front and rear powered battery to facilitate maximum performance.

2017 Tesla Model X Ride & Handling

The 2017 Model X displays an appropriately direct steering ability in the Normal and Comfort modes. The steering may feel a little stiff in the high-speed enduring Sport Mode. Its remarkable adaptive cruise control and auto-steering function keep it on track on highways, imbuing it with great stability and handling, without letting the massive weight of the SUV be any concerning factor at all.

One surprising fact about the Model X SUV that has been floating around is that the SUV just fails to land on its roof. That is, the SUV has such great roll-resistance that despite toppling a number of times, it will just land on its feet. The reason being that the huge battery pack that sits on the floor takes up most of the weight and hence it lowers the center of gravity substantially. This enables the SUV to stick its wheels to the ground in unfortunate situations. Besides, the low center of gravity helps in gripping the road quite firmly, thus improving traction on the go.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2017 Tesla Model X seats five in standard configuration, though six or seven-seat configuration is available. The interior of the 2017 Model X is extremely quiet, and the seats are comfortably suitable for long trips. The legroom in the second and optional third row is above class average. The large panoramic moonroof makes the cabin feel airy.

All the seats have heating and cooling features with supportive armrests. The air suspension provides minimal head tossing, while the large tread tires are enough to filter a few road irregularities. Exterior

First to capture your attention are the flacon wing doors that open up to allow you inside the Model X's cabin. When viewed from the front, the new 2017 Tesla Model X is almost indistinguishable from its sexy sedan brother, the Model S, which is still one of the best-looking cars around.

And the family resemblance continues with the SUV’s steep windshield, flush chrome door handles, and fastback roofline. However, while the Model S pleases the eyes with a low silhouette and wide stance when viewed from some angles, the Model X looks awkwardly tall and a bit slab-sided.

The Mercedes-Benz, other than being the heaviest, the lengthiest, and the tallest, also has the highest ground clearance and wheelbase. The Porsche Cayenne is the lightest and has the smallest wheelbase, although it shares an equally large ground clearance with the Mercedes. The 2017 Tesla Model X SUV is the widest among the four and has the least ground clearance, whereas the Audi Q7 has a fairly balanced dimensional figure. Major exterior features include-

  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Power trunk lid
  • Interval wipers
  • Cargo area lighting

Safety
8.1/10

The 2017 Tesla Model X comes studded with loads of safety features like traction control and stability systems, lane departure and blind-spot warnings, automatic emergency braking, 360-degree sonar sensors, and a forward-looking camera. Meanwhile, the screen depicting the proximity of objects near you when parking is industry-leading. The large backup camera display is very helpful, too. We also like adaptive cruise control, but a full Autopilot is a mixed bag and should never be used without full attention. Few key safety features include:

  • Eight airbags throughout
  • Electronic stability and traction control
  • Four-wheel antilock disc brakes with the electronic parking brake
  • Acoustic front-row safety belt warning
  • Rollover crash sensor
  • Four LATCH attachments for child seat installations in 6-seat and 7-seat configurations
  • Rear door child safety locks

Porsche Cayenne vs Tesla Model X

The Porsche Cayenne is a well-packed SUV with a powerful blend of luxury, sports car performance, and off-road abilities as well. Its power source is a 3.6-liter Premium Unleaded V6 engine which is supported by 8-speed transmission and all-wheel drive. It constitutes to be an ideal road trip car with comfortable leather seats and classy infotainment for navigation.

However, when compared to the 2017 Tesla Model X SUV, it lacks engine performance, acceleration, braking, and cargo spacing as well, putting it quite behind the Tesla in the competition.

Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 vs Tesla Model X

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 is the luxury SUV that maintains the legacy of the locomotive company with its three-rowed powerhouse with loads of techs and amenities installed in it. Under its hood is a 3L bi-turbo v6 engine that generates power by coupling with the 9-speed automatic transmission.

Although factors like engine performance, acceleration, braking, and poor fuel economy put it behind the 2017 Tesla Model X SUV, it does somewhat compensate with massive interior spacing and gigantic cargo area as well as a strong towing capacity.

Audi Q7 3.0 TFSI vs Tesla Model X

Compared to the price tag attached to it, the Audi Q7 has so much more to offer, making it worth every penny spent. With a 3L TFSI V6 engine, 8-speed transmission, and all-wheel-drive system, it puts up a strong performance.

The additional smooth steering, air suspension, and adaptive dampers maintain the comfortable ride quality. It may be a little weaker in engine power and acceleration than the 2017 Tesla Model X SUV, but the spacious interiors and cargo space keep in the competition of SUVs.

Final Verdict

The first concern regarding the 2017 Tesla Model X SUV is the high price tag and expensive options that come with it. However, it does deliver immaculately in terms of performance, and being totally electrical is highly beneficial as it omits any extra fuel costs. The 2017 Model X is a one-time investment towards revolutionizing the trend of SUVs in the market. It is definitely tempting, and given the range of facilities it has in store to offer, it will not disappoint the buyer at all.
