The Volkswagen Tiguan is a mid-sized entry-level luxury SUV. The Tiguan banks on practicality and comfort and is one of those SUVs that you can take around the town. Not a hardcore off-roader though, the Tiguan can certainly be your daily driver. In this in-depth review of the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan, we will investigate why this car should be your next daily driver SUV.

The Tiguan is equipped with a 2 liter 4 cylinder, turbocharged DOHC engine. The power plant pumps out about 200 horses and delivers 207 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The characteristic of the peppy engine is such that it always wants you to take it on the higher rev range, but at the same time, it ensures that it's safe and stable. The gearbox is also buttery smooth and offers you a great ride.

The Tiguan is the most powerful car in the competition. In spite of using the smallest engine, it delivers the best power figures. TheToyotaRAV4 and theMazdaCX-5 both use larger 2.5-liter engines but deliver power numbers lower than the Volkswagen Tiguan. TheHondaCR-V, on the other hand, uses a 2.4-liter engine and is 16 horses deficient to the Tiguan.
This is not really the kind of vehicle where acceleration figures could make a difference to the customer's decision on whether to buy this car or not. Yet, we share them for you with us. The Tiguan can go flat out from 0-60 MPH in just 8.3 seconds and can cover the quarter-mile distance in about 17 seconds.
These acceleration figures are pretty average, and there's nothing really extraordinary about them.

The Tiguan and the Toyota RAV4 have the best 0-60 MPH acceleration timings in the segment of 8.3 seconds, while all the other three cars better the Tiguan in terms of quarter-mile acceleration timings. The Mazda CX-5 hits the quarter-mile mark in about 16.6 seconds, which is 0.4 seconds faster than the Tiguan.
The driving dynamics of the Tiguan impressed us. The peppy engine of the Tiguan gives you a good amount of confidence and offers you plenty of power. Only a dab on the throttle will make overtaking on the highways or on the city roads an easy task. The steering wheel is light, and it almost feels like you're driving a hatchback. There is a good amount of feedback from the steering wheel, and the cornering abilities of the Tiguan are great.
Zipping past the traffic is also an easy task, credit to the precise steering of this car. Being an entry-level luxury SUV, the ride quality on offer is top-notch. The cabin is spacious, the suspensions are nicely set up to soak bumps and potholes, and the body roll on offer is also negligible. All-in-all, you get an in-ride experience that you'd actually get from the cars a couple of segments above this one.
The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan has all-around disc brakes that offer tremendous braking power to stop this SUV. The SUV gets 12.3-inch disc rotors at the front, whereas at the rear, the SUV gets 11.1-inch disc brakes.
At 3,646 lbs, the Tiguan is a heavy SUV and the large brakes do work well to aid the stopping power. You also get ABS, EBD, and Brake Assist as standard across the trims.

The Tiguan gets the largest brakes in the segment. The rear disc rotors of the Tiguan are as large as the front brake rotors in the Honda CR-V. However, Honda gets the most sophisticated braking system, which offers great stopping power. The CR-V is also the lightest SUV in the comparison weighing at just 3,307 lbs.
The powerful engine of the VW Tiguan helps it tow about 2,200 lbs. The powerful turbocharged motor provides adequate low-end torque which makes it quite strong to pull large cargo. Towing harness comes at a premium and is a worthy addition to an SUV. Comparing the size, the Tiguan has abilities that are comparable to even bigger SUVs above its segment.

The VW has the highest towing capacity in the competition. The Honda CR-V does feel weak while towing at full capacity, whereas the Tiguan feels effortless even at highway speeds. However, the Tiguan does have large rear blind spots, which makes it tough to have a better view of your trailer.
The fuel economy figures of the Tiguan are a disappointment, credit to its powerful engine. In the city traffic, the Tiguan can go for 20 miles on a gallon of fuel, while on the highways, it can go for 24 miles on a gallon of fuel. The Tiguan gets a combined fuel efficiency rating of 22 MPG.

The Honda CR-V has the best fuel economy numbers in the competition and gets a combined fuel economy rating of 28 MPG. The CR-V is followed by the Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-5, which get a combined efficiency rating of 26 MPG and 27 MPG, respectively.
Hop on to the inside, and you'd rather find a luxurious cabin. The materials used are high quality, and the levels of fit and finish are great. The dashboard is neatly laid out and it isn't cluttered. Buttons, switches, and controls too are high quality. In a nutshell, the interiors are worthy of a luxury car and are not really what you'd expect from a car in this category.
Upfront, the car offers a total head/shoulder/leg room of 39.1/56.2/40.1 inches, respectively, while on the rear, you get a total head/shoulder/leg room of 39./55/35.8 inches, respectively. The reclining seats further help you to open up to more space. The VW can accommodate up to 5 full-size adults quite comfortably. The seats are wrapped in quality leather, and you get to choose a variety of color combinations as per your taste. Seats are also nicely cushioned and comfort levels on the inside are pretty high.

The CR-V also offers a well-built cabin with a host of modern-day features. However, the Tiguan offers tremendous levels of precision, which showcases its European stands. The CR-V has the widest bench at the rear, which offers the largest shoulder room in the segment. The RAV-4, however, lacks the headroom which is offered by the rivals at the rear, which might bother 6-footers. Some of the cool features on the inside of the Tiguan are listed below.
The entry-level Tiguan comes with an 8-inch touch screen infotainment display and it sits in the center of the dash. The infotainment system of the VW is one of the most intuitive systems in the industry, and that's just another part where the Tiguan left us impressed. The infotainment system comes with an 8 speaker audio system that offers crisp sound quality and takes your in-ride entertainment experience to the next level.
What's disappointing though is the absence of the satellite navigation system, and you'll have to pay VW extra to get one. Also, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay aren't offered with the base spec Tiguan and only come with the S 4Motion trim level. You also get a CD player, AM/FM radio, SD card reader, and Bluetooth compatibility for audio streaming devices. Few key features include-
Credit to its compact dimensions, the VW gets a smaller trunk. With the second row of seats up, the Tiguan offers a cargo volume of 23.8 cubic feet, which is large enough to swallow a golf kit and a couple of medium size bags.
Flip down the second row of seats, and you open up to 56.1 cubic feet of cargo volume, which is enough to accommodate all your camping equipment and a bike.

The VW has the smallest trunk in the competition. The Honda gets the largest trunk with a total capacity of 39.2 cubic feet. The Honda is followed by the Toyota and the Mazda that offer a trunk volume of 38.4 cubic feet and 30.9 cubic feet, respectively. The CR-V also gets the lowest loading lip which helps you load in heavy stuff easily.
The Tiguan is an SUV built for the urban roads and hence has rather compact dimensions. The VW is 174.5 inches long, 71.2 inches wide, and is 67.1 inches tall. The Tiguan also gets a decent ground clearance of 6.9 inches, just so that you don't scratch the floor when you meet a bump or a pothole. This SUV weighs 3,404 lbs.
The Toyota RAV4 is the longest SUV of the lot, while the Honda CR-V is the widest. The Toyota RAV4 and the VW Tiguan both are equally tall and are also the tallest cars in the competition.

The Mazda CX-5 is the heaviest car in the competition while the Honda CR-V is the lightest. Some of the cool features on the outside of the VW Tiguan are listed below.
Being one of the topmost cars that the brand offers, the Tiguan does feel pretty old with its standard safety features. The car loses out on advanced driver-assist features that the rivals such as the Honda CR-V offers. You get a Hill-hold assist, Hill-descent control as standard electronic aids across all trims. The SUV has received a 4-star crash test rating from NHTSA and a decent score for the crash test conducted by IIHS. Some of the advanced safety features offered with the VW Tiguan are listed below.
The RAV4 is the Japanese rival of the Tiguan. The VW has a more powerful engine and also has similar acceleration timings. The VW is also priced lower than the RAV4 hence offering greater value for your money. On the flip side, the Toyota has the better fuel economy numbers and also has better trunk storage capacity.
Comparing both the cars closely, we would rather suggest you go for the VW Tiguan. It is compact, it is practical, it is sophisticated, and can be a great companion for city driving. If you have to choose between the two, go for the VW Tiguan.
The Honda CR-V is yet another entry-level luxury SUV and is the Japanese rival of the VW Tiguan. The VW Tiguan makes more power and has better acceleration than the CR-V. On the other hand, the Honda beats the VW in terms of fuel economy and cargo volume.
But, the Honda is 3,000 bucks costlier than the Tiguan, and shelling 2,000 bucks extra on the Tiguan could buy you an all-wheel-drive Tiguan. In conclusion, we would say that the Tiguan is the better car of the two. In fact, the Tiguan seems to be the more balanced package of the two and hence the VW is the car you should go for.
The Mazda CX-5 is yet another mid-sized, entry-level, luxury SUV and is yet another Japanese rival of the VW Tiguan. Just like its other Japanese siblings, the CX-5 falls short of the Tiguan in terms of power figures and acceleration timings. The CX-5, however, beats the Tiguan in terms of fuel economy and trunk volume.
At 3,000 bucks less than the Mazda, the German SUV makes more sense. We would rather suggest you go to the Tiguan if you have to choose between the two.
The Volkswagen Tiguan is a perfect example of German engineering. It is straight and subtle and banks on practicality. It offers great features, and there's nothing really that it does wrong. In a single sentence, the Tiguan is a no-nonsense car. You can trust your Tiguan to drive you to the office, drop your kids to the school, take your kids and family on a road trip, pack in all the stuff you bought from the grocery store, or you can also casually go off-roading. All-in-all, a perfect all-rounder that can meet all your needs with great ease.
