Overall Rating
The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg SUV is a seriously good vehicle which can envy many, and quite expectedly, it scores over the GMC Acadia Denali and the Hyundai Santa Fe easily.
Volkswagen’s flagship and the most tech savvy car to come out from the Volkswagen factory, the VW Touareg is out again with its third generation, and this chronicle is different from the previous ones. The new Touareg has exchanged its off-road nature and muscular built for a more premium look so that it can now genuinely compete with the likes of the Honda Pilot LX, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the GMC Acadia Denali.
When you get three options arranged in increasing order of resourcefulness, it seems right that the middle version is the best deal. The same is the case with the Touareg. The Wolfsburg trim has got all the luxury and features that you'll desire in a car. It gets the leather seats and added safety features that you won't get in the base trim.

To keep things interesting, the 2017 Volkswagen Touareg SUV offers three trims, with Sport being the base, Wolfsburg the mid-trim, and Executive the top. All the trims employ a 3.6-Liter V6 engine, which sends the power directly to the rear wheels of the car. This engine comes paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. While the powertrain remains the same, the trims distinguish in terms of adornments that uplift the luxury of the cabin. Even the electronic amenities that encompass the sharp-looking layout add to the cost quite significantly. Nevertheless, the trims remain fairly equipped with driver assistance technologies and safety features alike.

Volkswagen has a history of making some of the best powertrains, however, the Touareg’s engine is not one of them. The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg SUV is powered by a 3.6L V-6 turbocharged engine that produces 280 hp of power and 266 lb-ft of torque, which provides the rear-wheel-drive with 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. Well, it is recommended to use premium octane gasoline to get the best performance off this engine, although, it will work just fine with ordinary octane fuel.

All the rivals are somewhat different in this regard with the Pilot offering a 3.5-liter version and the Santa Fe and the Acadia with 3.3 and 3.6-liters engines respectively. The good thing is that they generate almost equal power generations to go with it. With 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque, GMC Acadia Denali takes the top spot on the table.
The Volkswagen is not known for its fast acceleration, and this is something which was just about par for Touareg, taking 7.5 seconds to cover 60 mph and 15.7 seconds to cover the quarter-mile. These figures are quite self-explanatory of the high and dry power delivery of the Touareg.

The worrisome thing is the fact that all the other three rivals are way quicker than the Touareg and this is something which VW must look at. Moreover, despite having the largest engine, the host is quite shy to take the lead in the race. Speaking of lead, the Honda Pilot is exhaustively quicker than the rest of the competitors in the 0-60 mph timing. The American Acadia gets past the PIlot by taking 0.1 seconds less in the quarter-mile by completing the drag race in 15 seconds.
The Touareg is a delight on the roads which demand less speed. Especially, in the cities, the SUV feels quite upscale with a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission. Although the under tuned engine can feel a bit difficult to deal with in traffic, the sharp and sleek design provides the confidence to pull the Touareg out of tight sections quite comfortably. Even the windshield area is large enough to offer great visibility in and out.
Well, the Touareg’s engine can be demanding on more open roads, but on the bright side, the 8-Speed gearbox shifts impeccably with swift upshifts and flawless downshifts. One could hardly feel the engagement of gears in the cabin. While we are on that, comfort and refinement are top-notch in this SUV, even the suspension filters the worst of irregularities quite confidently. It has responsive steering with plenty of road feel, and it stays stable and secure when you're going around turns. Luckily, none of this means it's uncomfortable on the highway. It's also quiet, smooth, and confident over bumpy roads, all of which contribute to its luxury feel.
The Touareg is dynamically very well designed. As great as it drives, the braking system too, is optimally designed. The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg SUV braking does exceptionally well consider the acceleration that it has.
The quad disc arrangement with four-piston calipers on each wheel enables the Touareg to halt within just 123 ft., the fastest any mid-segment SUV can do.

While the Touareg is the quickest to stop, the others are not far off either. Following the Touareg, the Santa Fe is a close second with 125 feet, the Denali and the Pilot are behind with 126 feet and 128 feet, respectively. When it comes to curb weight of the SUVs, the Volkswagen offering is the heaviest at 4,696 lbs.
The capacity of towing a decent amount of weight enhances the attractive aspect of any SUV available in the market. The powerful, heavyweight, and muscular Touareg is the perfect car for this segment with a towing capacity of 7,716 lbs. All the other three cars have pretty much half the value of the Volkswagen, proving the dominance the Touareg has over this segment.

Astonishingly, there is no better contender than the Touareg in this respect. The bigger engine finally played its role. Closest to challenge the VW Touareg is the Hyundai Santa Fe with a capacity to pull 5,000 lbs. of weight on a trot. However, even that is in vain, since it stands almost 2,700 lbs. below the capacity of the Touareg.
The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg SUV is a thirsty beast on wheels. Irrespective of its size and the emphasis on cutting edge design, the SUV gives a mileage of 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. With a combined mpg of 19, this car is pretty far from impressive in this regard too. Well, obviously we have the bigger engine to blame here.

Comparatively, the difference its rivals pose is quite minimalistic. As the tradition dictates, the Japanese Honda Pilot has the most refined powertrain, which shows up with a combined economy of 22 MPG, while the Hyundai Santa Fe and GMC Acadia are stagnated at 21 MPG combined.
Not everything is a problem with the new Touareg. For instance, it has its own gameplay in comfort and convenience. The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg is a sports utility vehicle that accommodates 5 people.
It provides heated and cooled seating as well. The passenger rear seats are also electrically powered. It also houses the driver-seat memory system settings, which shifts the seats as per the preference of the driver beforehand.

The seats are 14 way electronically powered providing ample support to the driver. They are power-adjustable and heated. They are made of premium synthetic leather upholstery. Add to that leather-wrapped steering wheel that can be adjusted as per the preference of the driver. The SUV from Volkswagen loses in the name of practicality big time as all the rivals offer seating space for more than five of Touareg. Few key interior features include-
Keeping you entertained inside the Touareg is an easy task with the number of features that have been imposed in the cabin by the VW Group.
The Volkswagen infotainment has always been easy to use and understand, and this one is no different. It has all the necessary features as well. However, it does have basic features like:
The 2017 VW Touareg doesn’t boast of the best trunk in this segment. It is not even close to the best. However, the trunk of the Touareg can easily hold a few duffle bags among others.
It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags. With all seats up, the space behind Volkswagen’s Touareg second row seat is 32.1 cubic feet.

All the other three rivals, the Honda, Hyundai and the GMC have pretty much the same sized trunk of around 80 ft3. It is the VW that lags a fair bit behind in this case and is something the VW engineers must have to look into. With all the rear seats down, Honda Pilot dominates the department with 83.9 cubic feet.
The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg SUV is the heaviest car in this segment, and that too by a big margin.
However, the solid and muscular built has always been associated with the Volkswagen brand, and this is something that makes the driver very confident. When comparing the curb weight, GMC is the lightest in the segment.

The Honda here has the best dimensions, leading to a best in class space on the inside as well. The Touareg too does pretty decently in this regard, while the Santa Fe is pretty tight in the rear in this regard. The Touareg, despite ditching its off-road nature, still has the best in class ground clearance of 7.9 inches, practically showing the difference between the best and the worst. Some of the exterior features include:
The 2021 Volkswagen Touareg offers many safety features, including forwarding Collision warning, blindspot monitor, adaptive cruise, lane assist, and many more. However, to avail of these, one needs to opt for the top trim only. Meanwhile, the trims below also come with many standard features. Some important safety features include-:
While the Honda does have a better pickup and acceleration along with the trunk capacity than that of the Touareg, it is genuinely a no match for the Volkswagen as the main purpose of the SUV is what the VW specializes in.
With a better feel and interiors, along with better ground clearance and towing capacity, not to mention the built quality, the Honda is of no match to the Touareg.
The fight between the Volkswagen and the Hyundai goes right down to the wire. Both generate almost equal figures in the engine capacity and the fuel economy.
The cargo capacity is where the Hyundai is a clear winner, and rightly so, as it is pretty close to the best in class. However, again like in the case of the Pilot, the Volkswagen scores on all the crucial aspects of an SUV and is a clear winner here too.
Again, like in the other two cases, the Acadia Denali manages just about equal figures of power and torque to that of the Touareg.
It does pretty well in all other aspects as well. However, such a high price and lack of premium qualities, make the Volkswagen Touareg a clear winner here too.
The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg SUV is a seriously good vehicle that can envy many, and quite expectedly, it scores over the GMC Acadia Denali and the Hyundai Santa Fe easily. However, its fight is with the Honda Pilot LX. Both these cars go head to head and come out equal in almost all the parameters, with the engine capacity, fuel economy, and the pick up being a few. However, while the Honda scores on the technical aspects, the Volkswagen is easily the best when the physical aspects are considered. So, if you want a typical, muscular looking SUV with great interiors, the Volkswagen Touareg is the car for you, while a more technical pick would be the Honda Pilot.
