Overall Rating
Volvo's traditional strong body shell and the array of airbags make the XC60 one of the safest cars to be on the road. Radar, Ultrasound, and Cameras make it possible for the car to help you keep an eye on the surrounding.
From Europe's largest-selling SUV in its segment to represent a third of Volvos sold, the new Volvo XC60 is immensely impressive. The XC60 has been part of the Volvo convoy since 2011 and brings with it a whole new look, feel, and perspective. That is, it's a mid-size luxury SUV with seating for five.
Ranging from $40,950 for its base model i.e. T5 trim to $51,000 for the T6 R-design AWD trim. The XC60 offers a comprehensive line up of features that make it the perfect car for daily usage. Eiter engine in the T5 as well as the T6 variants makes enough power to keep you satisfied with the SUV.
The Inscription trim makes the most sense as it offers the best mixture of features and cost savings. While the AWD setup should be opted for with the T6 motor, although either is only required in snowy or low traction regions.

For 2017, Volvo has simplified the lineup, reducing the XC60 to just three trims: Dynamic, Inscription, and R-Design. Gone are the old 5- and 6-cylinder engines, leaving only a turbocharged 4-cylinder in the XC60 T5 variant and a turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder in the XC60 T6 variant.
The XC60 T5 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine boasting 240 horsepower whereas the XC60 T6 is rated at 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The T5 comes standard with FWD, but the T6 is offered exclusively in AWD.

The Inscription trim makes the most sense as it offers the best mixture of features and cost savings. While the AWD setup should be opted for with the T6 motor, although either is only required in snowy or low traction regions.
Volvo gives out three different powertrains in the XC60, all mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with the standard all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid model—a rare bird in this segment—provides up to 18 miles of electric-only driving range. Under the hood of the base, T5-badged XC60 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four pumping out 250 horsepower.
Most consumers will be satisfied with this engine's performance. For enthusiasts and drivers alike Volvo offers a tuned-up motor. The T6 model is powered by the same turbocharged inline-four as the T5, but a supercharger is added to boost performance; with 316 ponies in its stable, it feels peppier, and it is measurably quicker than the T5.

For the most base spec trims, the Mercedes Benz GLC 300 offers the most power from its turbocharged motor. The Merc also has the best torque output. The Volvo XC60 T5 comes second in terms of engine specs, with output that is similar to that of the BMW X4 XDrive28i.
The 2017 Volvo XC60 SUV's 6.4-second zero-to-60-mph time is quite quick. The turbocharged 2.0-liter T5 and turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter T6 engines offer adequate power and hustle the XC60, which makes it even quicker in the straight line.
Neither of the XC60’s powertrains is refined and can get quite noisy over their speed ranges. Considering the emissions though, the Volvo offers some considerably low figures.

The competition is quicker than the Volvo XC60, with the lighter Audi Q5 pulling neatly ahead of all the others in acceleration runs. The BMW X4 and the Audi Q5 are quite close to each other in performance, and their engine outputs are also quite comparable.
The Volvo XC60 sticks well in corners and feels tied to the road while cruising. The car has composed handling and the steering seems precise in changing directions. The steering is built to weigh up as speeds rise, though it still feels a bit isolated and on the softer side. Nevertheless, the designers at Volvo have ensured that the viewing angles and the seating position are perfect to allow a commanding view of the road.
The ride can feel a touch harsh when driving over rougher stretches of road, but on smooth sections, it's agreeable and calm. The ride quality can easily take on a few bumps and niggles. The road noise is brilliantly damped and rarely seeps into the cabin, though the loud engine does get raucous at higher speeds.
The focus in most of these ADAS features shifts from making the driver aware they need to do something, to skipping a step and manipulating the vehicle on their own. The 2017 Volvo XC60 SUV is a change that could unsettle some drivers who are more used to taking control. Donning 12.9 in the front brake and an 11.9 in rear brake, the 2017 Volvo XC60 SUV offers a light, easy brake pedal.

Volvo's being especially aggressive about implementing ADAS features, including a large animal detection system that will help make sure you don’t run over any animals or people who are too engrossed in their phones while crossing the road. Though surprisingly the Mercedes Benz GLC 300 seems to be the quickest to come to a standstill from 60 mph. Almost every other car in the competition comes to a stop quicker than the Volvo XC60.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates fuel economy at 23 miles per gallon in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. All-wheel-drive (AWD) models with the T5 attain 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway/23 mpg combined. The XC60 T6 which comes standard with AWD is estimated to give fuel consumption at 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/22 mpg combined.

The XC60's three different powertrains meet and exceed many of their rivals when it comes to fuel consumption. Of the competitors listed here, only the Audi Q5 gives the T5 and T6 versions of the Volvo a run for their money in the EPA's estimations. In the real world as well the XC60 exceeds expectations.
Front seats are well-shaped and appropriately cushioned for long road trips, and the range of adjustments ensure a comfortable position for a variety of body types. These front seats get cooled/heated with a massage function, which is a segment-first offering Rear seats are similarly accommodating, delivering adult-sized head and legroom.
These are more accommodating than many in this class, and the integrated dual-stage child booster seats are a great kid-friendly option.

The XC60 just knocks you out of the park with its all-black dashboard finished in soft-touch plastics, and then there are the unlacquered wood trimmings which look stunning. While the rivals provide enough legroom and comfort, the Volvo offers even better space.
The new Volvo XC60 includes a 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio setup, along with a subwoofer that is concealed very well within the cab to fit in continuously with the design. It is also placed quite well in terms of the audio performance, which is, for its segment, quite impressive.Â
The base models come with a 7.0-inch display with navigation. While the higher trims get 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment. The system is quite responsive, though the navigation seems to be a bit sluggish in its operation. Some standout infotainment features are:
Decent cargo-hauling capability puts the XC60 midpack, limited interior cubby storage, and the sole cargo-area bin is among the biggest of its rivals. With its rear seats upright, the XC60 managed to accommodate eight carry-on cases.

The XC60 may look as if it has the smallest cargo volume of the bunch but still manages to outhaul the Audi Q5 and the Porsche Macan. The BMW X4 and the Mercedes Benz GLC 300 seem to lag behind the Volvo by quite a bit.
Handsome, square-jawed styling, with many features drawn from the XC90 but slightly smaller in size, the XC60 sports an upscale appearance and a shape that is familiar yet distinct all the same. Despite its low overall height, it offers the most ground clearance of the SUVs in this matchup, even if most buyers won't venture off-road. Volvo's new exterior is characterized by a snub nose, headlamps with Thor's Hammer LED running lights, tasteful chrome accents, the swept-out back, and the side-hugging tail LEDs all of which flow seamlessly into a sleek and elegant body.
A panoramic sunroof is the standard spec. All models roll on handsome aluminum wheels ranging in size from 18 to 22 inches in a wide variety of styles depending on trim. Several neat exterior features are available as options, including heated windshield wipers and headlight-cleaning jets. The Inscription and the R Design trim each feature their distinct stylistic touches on the exterior.

The Audi Q5 is the heaviest here though that is barely a hindrance given its efficiency and performance. All these cars have great maneuverability due to their compact dimensions. The Volvo XC60 is calm and sophisticated and has an aura of understated elegance, which is extremely attractive. The 2017 Volvo XC60 SUV offers a few exterior features which include -
Volvo's reputation for safety is hard-won, and the brand shows no signs of dropping the ball in this regard. The car has aced the tests by the NHTSA which gives it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS on the other hand awards the XC60 as the “Top Safety Pick+” which is its highest honor. Volvo further includes a wide variety of groundbreaking safety features and technology in the car, these are:
The BMW X4 is one of the sturdiest SUVs in its segment. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and a range of turbocharged engines mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new BMW X4 feels even more athletic than the X3. In the 28i, BMW has reworked the suspension with stronger springs and rear stabilizer bar, and the all-wheel-drive system now sends more power to the rear wheels.
Forward-collision warning and low-speed automated emergency braking have been made standard.
Mercedes-Benz, no stranger to our SUV of the Year honors, is a competent luxury crossover that also features the excellent interior of its sedan sibling. There's lots of standard tech and safety, including collision-prevention and crosswind assist, adaptive suspension, and keyless start. The new Mercedes-Benz GLC300 has a 241-hp 2.0-liter four that pairs with a paddle-shifted nine-speed automatic and rear-drive; all-wheel drive is optional.
The seats are comfortable, the interior quiet, just like any other Mercedes. You know you're getting into a Mercedes as soon as you open the door to the GLC. The quality of the materials and the elegance of the design are very consistent with the Mercedes-Benz brand proposition and reputation.
One of the greatest range of powertrain choices in its class, the new Audi Q5 is comfortable, quiet, and handsomely styled, and provides the feel that crossover buyers crave. Driving all four wheels is a 252-hp turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a seven-speed automatic. The cabin is well-finished, and atop its dash sits a 7.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; an 8.3-inch display is optional, as is the 12.3-inch driver-facing digital gauge cluster.
All Q5s come with automated emergency braking and a power liftgate. Audi Q5 is more distinctive than it looks. The Q5 SUV adds power, efficiency, and almost anyone can find a version of this handsome small crossover to fit their tastes.
Volvo's empire of building cars that are safe, pragmatic, and extremely beguiling has risen with the 2017 Volvo XC60. Agreed, the rivals of this SUV may provide more comfort or more sporty drive, but for something that feels a little different from the niche added to a hefty does of with Swedish luxury, the 2017 Volvo XC60 SUV is highly well realized.
Giving the buyer a high value for their money, the Volvo XC60 SUV is loaded with features that only a few automobile companies can offer. So, if you are thinking of buying well-styled elegance and outstanding safety in a crossover, the 2017 Volvo XC60 SUV should be on the top of your bucket list.
