Overall Rating
Like a good opera, Italian cars are distinguished by passion, triumph, and tragedy in equal measures and it's unheard of for fans to end a journey in tears – sometimes tears of joy, sometimes not.
Like a good opera, Italian cars are distinguished by passion, triumph, and tragedy in equal measures and it's not usual for fans to end a journey in tears – sometimes tears of joy, sometimes not. Italians are also fiercely proud of their independence and proud to be that bit different to the rest of Europe and it’s with a similar feeling of standing out that Alfa Romeo presents the Giulia as an alternative to the usual family sedans.
The 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine, which is punchy enough to push the car to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds. Furthermore, the quarter-mile is taken care of in 13.8 seconds. These are some serious figures for a sports sedan. The Giulia is also offered with a polished yet sporty interior, which doesn't fail to constantly remind you of how Italian the Alfa Romeo Giulia is. All in all, the 2018 Giulia is an interesting alternative to several other sedans in this segment and offers a unique blend of power, refinement, comfort, and quirks.
We would recommend you to go ahead with the Sport trim because this trim features exclusive sporty interiors and exteriors. It gives an exotic look like a true sports sedan. Some features like colored brake calipers, front and rear sport fascias, glossy back window surrounds truly differentiate the sedan from other trim levels.

Buying Advice
We would recommend you to go ahead with the Sport trim because this trim features exclusive sporty interiors and exteriors. It gives an exotic look like a true sports sedan. Some features like colored brake calipers, front and rear sport fascias, glossy back window surrounds truly differentiate the sedan from other trim levels.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia gets an all-new engine and it features all of the latest FCA technologies including direct injection and multi-air too. The 2018 Giulia offers a 2.0-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine and the power comes in at a very healthy 280 horsepower and 316 pound-feet of torque. This is a great deal of more power in the base trim we find in the competition. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Usually, it is not possible to get heavy agility and power from the base engine but the Giulia proves this fact wrong and allows the buyers with heavy right foot to experience the dream.
The 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia's engine is very refined and understands exactly what its master wants. Although there is some turbo lag out of this engine, it's an awful lot lower than many of its competitors. The steering in this machine is absolutely precise while the powerful Brembo brakes handle the braking behavior of the Giulia. Around the corners, the balance is good enough to prevent body roll. The ride quality is somewhat firm but you can modulate the suspension according to different drive modes.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia has the most powerful base engine and good levels of torque to place it on top of the table. The underpowered Audi A4 takes on the Giulia in the acceleration and drag test while the BMW 320i, with its 248 ponies, grabs the second spot on the table with its decent performance figures. Although the Jaguar XE boasts almost similar power figures to the 320i, the former slips to the last position on the table with its low-performance numbers.
Fortunately for enthusiasts, the Giulia offers compelling performance without any major compromises on interior refinement- something which is otherwise missing in this segment. The 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia goes from 0 to 60 mph in an impressive 5.1 seconds. Despite the turbocharger, the acceleration is smooth and the power delivery is linear. At the drag strip, the Alfa Romeo Giulia manages to run the quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds, which is faster than most of its competition. In addition, the 2018 Giulia also manages to hit top speeds of up to 149 mph, which sure can get thrilling.

Comparing the competition, the Alfa Romeo Giulia and the Audi A4 share similar acceleration numbers, thanks to the Audi's lighter construction. The BMW 3-Series manages to come fairly close, while the Jaguar XE lags properly behind. Quarter-mile times of all sedans are similar, but the Jaguar stands off the Giulia's pace by nearly a 1-second marign, which is huge. The Jaguar, unfortunately, also manages lower top speeds than the others, while the BMW takes the top spot, primarily owing to a steep final drive ratio.
If you wish for a powerful sports sedan, you should also be ready to sacrifice fuel economy. However, the potent Giulia manages to surprise us with great mileage figures, despite being much more powerful than its competition. The RWD 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia returns 24 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on a highway. These figures drop down to 23 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway when you opt for the AWD Giulia Quadrifoglio. The 15.3-gallon fuel tank fitted in the Giulia can deliver a combined range of 436 miles. The combined range mentioned is valid only for the rear-wheel-drive models.

Both the Alfa Romeo Giulia and the Audi A4 have almost similar fuel economy but the latter offers an extra driving range although both of them are fitted with the same fuel tank capacity. On the other hand, the BMW 3 Series’s fuel economy in the city is quite low, but the worst performer here is the Jaguar XE, with fuel economy numbers even lower than that of the Italian sports sedan.
The 2018 Giulia has the best cabin to have ever been designed by Alfa Romeo. Absolutely no doubt about that. Getting behind the wheel of the Giulia, you will notice that the layout is driver-focused. All the controls are angled towards the driver. Leather-stitched door panels and dashboard are optional but this is definitely an option that really dresses up the interior. All trim models come standard with four-way adjustable lumbar support and an electric driver’s seat. However, the base seat design is a little bit firm and the seat bottom cushion is a little bit short too. So passengers with longer legs may find that unsupportive.
The optional sport seats increase the score because they are comfortable and offer a good amount of support. The headroom offered in both rows is decent, however, the presence of the dual-panel moonroof, really cuts down the rear headroom. A great deal in addition to that is a little less legroom than in some competition. The center seat in the back is positioned a little bit higher off the ground and a little bit forward than the outboard seating positions just like most compact luxury cars. When it comes to cargo capacity, the trunk in the Giulia is notably smaller than the BMW 3-Series.

The 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia comes with 13.4 cubic feet of storage volume, which only lets you store three large luggage bags. As in many European vehicles, the Giulia was not designed to accommodate a spare tire. So under the cargo area load floor, you get an additional storage area. All the competitors offer almost similar amounts of interior room. The Jaguar XE excels in this segment with its 14.7 cubes of cargo area, which is predominately more than the other rivals. Additional interior features of the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia
The 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia offers a fairly exciting infotainment system, which feels up-to-date and engaging enough for most commutes. The Base and Sport models get a 6.5-inch display that features smartphone integration and Bluetooth streaming. All Ti models have the upper-level infotainment system which has a larger 8.8-inch infotainment screen and the navigation system as standard. This system is very different from FCA’s other infotainment products. It uses a control knob very much like the Audi MMI or the Mercedes COMAND and there’s no touchscreen Navigating around the system is fairly intuitive, if you have used any of the other rotary dial navigation systems. It features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for your Bluetooth smartphone.
There’s also a navigation interface as you’d expect but this is a little unusual in the luxury car segment because you don’t get live traffic updates. The lower section of the display also mirrors your climate control settings. A standard 8-speaker sound system delivers clear music but the optional 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system is for music lovers. Additional infotainment features of the new Alfa Romeo Giulia are mentioned below for reference:
Upfront, the Giulia gets the very distinctive Alfa Romeo V-shaped grille and there are larger cooling ducts on the lower fascia that provides the majority of the engine cooling. All trim levels get xenon headlamps with a LED accent strip inside the headlight module. This is one of the main drawbacks of the Giulia. While other competitors are offering LED headlamps, the Giulia sticks to the xenon lamps.
The LED cornering lamps are inboard of the xenon lamp module and they shine over to the side, helping to accentuate the angry look of the Giulia. It is about two inches wider than the BMW 3 Series at 73.7 inches wide overall. From the side profile, the rear-wheel-drive proportion of the Giulia is very obvious. On the back, you get standard LED taillight modules. A majority of the lamp is on the body side although there is a portion that extends to the trunk lid. Dual exhaust tips are standard on all the trim models. The Giulia sits on 17-inch alloy wheels which can be upgraded to 19-inch polished alloy wheels.

Comparing the competition, the Jaguar XE ends up measuring the lightest, while the Alfa Romeo and the BMW come at similar weight levels. The Audi A4 measures the longest, while the gorgeous Jaguar XE features the greatest width. The Giulia measures the tallest in the lot while being the most low-slung. The BMW 3-Series features the greatest ground clearance, while the Jaguar XE comes with the longest wheelbase.
We're pleased that the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia ends up being an extremely safe vehicle for regular commutes. Due to its limited production, the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia has not been crash-tested by NHTSA. However, the IIHS has had some courtesy to check the crashworthiness of the Giulia. During the crash tests, the Giulia scored ‘Good’ ratings in all the categories, which led it to secure the ‘Top Safety Pick’ award. Should the Giulia have come with LED headlights, it would have won the ‘Top Safety Pick+’ award. Hill-start Assist, traction and stability control, torque control, and advanced braking assist are some of the standard safety features of the Giulia. Opting for the optional Safety package adds a lot of top driver-assist systems. They include:
Both the sport sedans are powered by the same engine i.e. a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The BMW 3 Series is almost $4,000 less than the Alfa Romeo Giulia but the latter makes 280 horses of power in contrast to BMW’s 248 horsepower. This power gap has a huge impact on the performance of the BMW 3 Series. The Giulia is a few seconds faster than BMW. The fuel consumption and the cargo capacity is also the same. If you are a fan of BMW products, then the BMW 3 Series could be a perfect fit for you.
The Audi A4 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The Alfa Romeo Giulia is more powerful than Audi. But surprisingly, the A4 takes the same time to complete the performance tests as the Giulia despite being a heavier sedan here. Both the sedans sport true luxury levels in the interior. The infotainment system on the Giulia works better than Audi’s MMI.
The Jaguar XE is the least powered sport sedan in this comparison. Its 2.0liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes only 247 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Hence, its performance numbers are the slowest in this segment. Also, the fuel efficiency of the XE is very low compared to the Giulia. In terms of comfort, both cars offer an equal amount of comfort and luxury levels.
The 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia is the new benchmark of the sport sedan segment. Its strong and powerful base engine makes enough power to keep the roads heated. The interior is plush and cushy, with high-quality materials and a good amount of room. If you’re looking for something a little off the beaten path, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is definitely a compelling option in this segment. You just have to deal with the fact it may not be as reliable as the BMW 3 Series and the infotainment system really needs a lot of work. On a more pleasant note, the Italian carmaker has stepped up the reliability factor of their present vehicles, something which is a strong plus point, given the company's poor history of making unreliable vehicles. If you’re really focused on driving ability, look no further than the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia.
