Overall Rating
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a brand new car and shares its platform and powertrain with the Alfa Romeo sedan - the Giulia. It even shares a few styling cues, and this makes it a very good looking SUV. The good part is that for this segment of SUVs, the Stelvio comes with all wheel drive as standard on all trims. Along with this, it can tow up to 3,000 pounds.
In its first year of the market, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio shares its underpinnings with the Alfa Romeo Giulia, this also includes its engine and the interior. The luxury compact SUV is also powered by the same 2.0 liter inline-4, which makes 280hp and can do the 0-60 sprint in 5.4 seconds, and also has a towing capacity of 3,000 pounds.
The compact SUV from Italy also has the same level of Italian styling that you can see on the Giulia and comes with leather interiors with plenty of options with an 8.8-inch touchscreen for all infotainment purposes. There is also a big list of other options for the exterior, including stylish wheels. Alfa Romeo packs all this into the Stelvio and offers it at a starting MSRP of $41,995.
We recommend going for the Stelvio Ti Lusso as it comes with all luxuries present in the other trims as well as getting 19” aluminum wheels, full leather upholstery, and even comes with genuine wood for the interior trim. The top of the line trim will bring you the best that Alfa Romeo has to offer.

The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio comes powered by a turbocharged inline-4, which makes 280hp and 306 lb-ft. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic that directs all the power to all the wheels. The transmission can be manually controlled with the help of the paddle shifters found behind the steering wheel. The performance numbers are the same across all Stelvio trims.
In terms of performance tests, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio does the 0-60 sprint in 5.4 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 14 seconds and holds the prowess to go up to 135MPH. These are quite good numbers for a compact SUV. As towing is also part of a performance, the Stelvio can tow up to 3,000 pounds.

Of the above compact luxury SUVs, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the most powerful, making 280hp. This makes it also the fastest in the performance tests - 0-60 sprint setting a time of 5.4 seconds and standing quarter-mile time of 14-seconds. These numbers make the Stelvio faster than the Audi Q5, Land Rover Range Rover Velar, and the Porsche Macan. The second on the table stands a tie between the Audi Q5 and Porsche Macan with 252hp and 273lb-ft of torque.
The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio offers 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and a combined mpg of 24. Alfa Romeo equips the Stelvio with a 16.9-gallon fuel tank, which allows it to have a range of 372 miles in the city, 473 miles on the highway, and a combined range of 405 miles, which is decent for a compact SUV of the segment.

The Audi Q5 offers the best-combined mpg of 25, following this is the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (24 mpg), Land Rover Range Rover Velar (23 mpg), and Porsche Macan (22 mpg). Due to the difference in fuel tank size, the range differs to a big degree. The Audi Q5 offers the most combined range of 462 miles, and following this is the Porsche Macan (435 miles combined), Alfa Romeo Stelvio (405 miles combined), and then comes last the Land Rover Range Rover Velar (381 miles combined)
The Interior of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is similar to the car it shares its platform with - the Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan. The Stelvio can seat up to five adults into the interior comfortably. In the rear seats, an adult might feel a bit cramped if you are comparatively tall. The front seats fitted stock are 12-way power-adjustable bucket seats with 4-way power lumbar available for the driver.
Black leather is the base upholstery, which can also be seen on the dashboard, doors, flat-bottom steering wheel, and even front center armrests. The leather upholstery can come in a few colors too that will just be on the seats. The Interior surfaces feature attractive aluminum accents, and across the trims can go on to feature even wood inlays or carbon fiber on sport trim levels. The trunk has 18.5 cu.ft of space, and the rear seats fold down in the 40/20/40 configuration for storing additional cargo.

In terms of legroom, the Alfa Romeo offers the least in the front and rear of the cars above. The Audi Q5 offers the most legroom in both rows, and then comes the Land Rover Range Rover Velar. The Stelvio (18.5 cu.ft.) also falls short in cargo capacity compared to the Land Rover Range Rover Velar (34.4 cu. ft.) and Audi Q5 (26.8 cu.ft.), both of which offer more. However, the Stelvio does offer more than the Porsche Macan (17.6 cu.ft.) in terms of cargo capacity. Few major interior features of the SUV include-
The infotainment system comes in only one size- the 8.8-inch touchscreen. However, there is a rotator controller on the center console if you do not want to use the touchscreen directly. The infotainment system has all the basics including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. However, navigation is an optional feature, which based on user reviews, can provide alerts a bit late. The infotainment manages to provide a crystal clear screen with an easy functional system. Here are some of the other key features of the infotainment system in the Alfa Romeo Stelvio:
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a very good looking car. After all, it shares its looks with the Alfa Romeo Giulia. The face has a scudetto grille (little shield) and is accompanied by two large air intakes on either side with angry forward-focused headlights above the air intakes. The body unlike other SUVs, which have a boxy shape, the Stelvio has a few curves on the side, and accenting the curves are flared fenders, which shows off its sporty looks.
The exterior has multiple features ranging from paint options to even the colors of the brake calipers. There are also roof rails if you would like to equip those for bicycles or kayaks. The wheels have a variety of choices in two color options. There are also gloss black window surrounds on sports trims and dual exhaust tips on the rear. If you like, there are exterior black trims and carbon packages for styling options.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio has similar dimensions to the above SUVs and is slightly shorter in length and thinner in width than the Land Rover Range Rover Velar. In terms of curb weight, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is one pound lighter than the Audi Q5 but otherwise positions itself comfortably in the middle of the lightest - Porsche Macan, and the heaviest - the Land Rover Range Rover Velar. Some important highlights of the exterior include-
NHTSA has not yet crash-tested the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, nor has the IIHS. The NHTSA has not tested the car it shares its platform with- the Alfa Romeo Giulia. However, the IIHS has tested the Giulia, and it has scored very well, getting “Good” and “Superior” in most sections and a marginal in Latch ease of use and was even the recipient of 2018 Top Safety Pick in the midsize luxury car/4-door sedan category. We only expect Stelvio to get similar scores in the crash tests. Alfa Romeo has installed a lot of safety features and driver aids in the Stelvio to ensure the complete safety of the passengers. However, in the Stelvio, the safety features are found in two of the optional packages - the Driver Assistance Static Package and the Driver Assistance Dynamic Package. Here are some of the safety features:
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the more powerful of the above and also better in performance. It even looks better than the Audi Q5.
But, the Audi Q5 offers one of the best driving dynamics present in the market along with more space in the rear including trunk space.
The Land Rover Range Rover Velar offers more space than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. However, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio on its topmost trim is still priced lesser than the Velar and also has more power and much better performance than the Velar.
As the number of luxury features is similar, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a much better option.
We know the Porsche Macan is less spacious, less powerful, and more expensive by $7,000 than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. This makes the Alfa Romeo Stelvio a much more attractive offering compared to the Porsche.
At the end of the day, the Porsche is also an equally well-engineered car compared to the Stelvio, but we prefer the Alfa.
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the new SUV from the Italian marquee, and it’s a looker. As it is based on the well-performing Giulia, the performance does not disappoint, having the most power and the best numbers in the performance tests. The interior is as luxurious as you expect with leather upholstery as standard with lots of options, and the infotainment system does not disappoint too. In the end, the new offering by Alfa Romeo is a worthy option in the segment.
