About 2018 Audi RS 7

3.5

Overall Rating

Created as a performance vehicle, the Audi RS 7 idealizes the Audi A7 Sportback and S7 Sportback. When the RS7 first debuted for the 2014 model year, it was hailed as the most powerful four-door production vehicle ever introduced by Audi in the United States. Now Audi is back with the 2018 Audi RS 7

Created as a performance vehicle, the 2018 Audi RS7 idealizes the Audi A7 Sportback and Audi S7 Sportback. When the Audi RS7 first debuted for the 2014 model year, it was hailed as the most powerful four-door production vehicle ever introduced by Audi in the United States. Now Audi is back with the 2018 Audi RS 7, and we pit it against the competition to find out if it's the best in the segment. The base model of the 2018 Audi RS7 costs $113,900, offering 550 horsepower under the hood, the 4-liter V-8 engine loves to rev and is a joy to drive.

There is now a 2018 Audi RS7 Performance version available too, which offers more power and sportier equipment for a slightly higher price. The new RS7 is here to shake the competition and the rival manufacturers in the luxury performance car segment should be worried. The Audi combines real-world practicality with sports car looks and performance, something that the others have been trying to do for a very long time. However, the seats can be a little uncomfortable at times but overall it performs excellently in every aspect.

If you are the kind of person who enjoys a simple, quiet drive around the neighborhood, then our recommendation for you is the standard version, which offers plenty of power and equipment for your money. The stereo is brilliant, the ride quality plush. Thus available at an MSRP of $113,900, the Base trim provides a better value for the money spent.

The second trim is the Performance trim which is equipped with a similar engine but it generates more torque and more power. Here is a list of the key features that are available with both the trims of the Audi RS7.

Our recommendation

If you are the kind of person who enjoys a simple, quiet drive around the neighborhood, then our recommendation for you is the standard version, which offers plenty of power and equipment for your money. The stereo is brilliant, the ride quality plush. Thus available at an MSRP of $113,900, the Base trim provides a better value for the money spent.

Engine and Performance
6.1/10

The 2018 Audi RS7 comes with the same legendary powertrain as the outgoing 2017 moniker. The 4.0L Twin-Turbo TFSI V8 motor of the 2018 Audi RS7 generates an impressive 560 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, all of which are routed to the road through the Quattro AWD system. The 2018 Audi RS7 engine performance is phenomenal and provides excellent grip and superior dynamics.

The engine is mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which is quite quick and very smooth in operation. The RS7 also comes with Audi’s trademark Quattro four-wheel drive, which distributes power to both the front and rear wheels as per the requirement. Audi RS7 belongs to Audi’s Performance lineup and therefore, it gets a lusty powertrain to give you the joy of a pure racing car.

All the cars in this competition use V-8 engine configuration. The 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo uses a 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, while the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S uses a 5.5-liter twin-turbo motor, the largest in this comparison. The BMW M6 Gran Coupe with a 4.4-liter V8 engine sits in the middle. All the vehicles in comparison are very close to each other in terms of power output. The Porsche and Mercedes-Benz generate 10 horses less than the Audi and BMW.

2018 Audi RS7 0-60 MPH Acceleration

The 2018 Audi RS7 0-60 MPH acceleration timing is extremely impressive. It takes a mere 3.6 seconds to reach from 0-60 MPH while for the quarter-mile run, it takes 11.3 seconds. The powerful Audi 4-liter motor bellows when you pin the pedal down. The all-wheel-drive Quattro system ensures that you always have a grip when you need it. The V-8 engine, even though it’s turbocharged, will never let you experience any power lag in the RS7.

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S 0-60 MPH acceleration, taking 3.5 seconds to reach from 0-60 MPH. The roll-on acceleration is a bit slower though, as it loses on the quarter-mile. The Porsche’s Panamera takes 3.8 seconds to reach from 0-60 MPH and is slower when it comes to a quarter-mile run. The 2018 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is the slowest in acceleration to all its rivals with 0-60 mph reached in 4.1 seconds.

2018 Audi RS7 Braking and Handling Performance

These premium luxury cars get the best brakes in the business. The Audi RS7 has an impressive set of disk brakes at the front (15.4 inches) and the rear (14 inches). The 2018 Audi RS7 weighs a hefty 4497 pounds making it the heaviest car of the lot, but it still comes to halt faster than its rivals.

The Audi RS7 is a pure sports sedan and its handling is as stellar as its performance. The car gets a sport flat-bottom steering which is quite light and responds well on low as well as higher speeds. The body roll is minimal and the car drives excellently along the pavements and on sharp turns.

Curb weight(lbs.) 4497 4398 4420 4430

The Audi RS7 is the fastest to come to a standstill from 60-0 MPH while the Porsche Panamera loses out to most of the competitors even after sporting bigger brakes and being the lightest car. The BMW M6 is second only to RS7 while the Mercedes CLS 63 S has the least effective braking. The Panamera and Audi RS 7 have the best-in-class handling as both cars drive pretty glued to the road and the suspension's road adaptability makes it even better.

Fuel Economy
6.1/10

The 2018 Audi RS7 manages a decent fuel economy as well, achieving 14 mpg in the city, and 24 mpg on the highway, thus averaging at about 19 miles per gallon. The fuel economy is surprising for these big bulky luxury cars, as they are built for show and go, not for saving fuel. Audi RS7, with its TFSI engine, manages to give the customers the best of both worlds.

Models Audi RS 7 Porsche Panamera Turbo Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S BMW M6 Gran Coupe
MPG (city) 14 18 16 14
MPG (highway) 24 25 22 20
MPG (combined) 19 21 19 17

The 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo is the most fuel-efficient car, which is surprising since it is built as a sports car and sports cars aren’t meant to be efficient. The reason might be the curb weight, as the Porsche is the lightest car in this comparison. The surprises continue, as the 2018 BMW M6 Gran Coupe fuel efficiency is the lowest in this comparison, and thus it is the least efficient car here. The Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S MPG ties with the Audi RS7 in terms of fuel efficiency.

Interior
8.7/10

The 2018 Audi RS7 interior is draped in premium leather as well as aluminum and carbon fiber inserts in the dashboard and door cards, which masks its age pretty well. Even after close to 5 years since its arrival in the United States, the car still looks elegant and sporty. We also love the top-notch built quality of the interior with premium material all-around used for construction. Everything in here feels solid and could easily last a lifetime. The design is also typical Audi along with great ergonomics on offer.

The 2018 RS7 gets the premium heated RS Sport Seats with electronic adjustability, lumbar adjustments, and RS7 embossing. These are some of the best seats we have encountered in recent times due to their impressive design offering superior under-thigh support, lower back support, and side bolstering. They are well cushioned too, providing excellent comfort both on the racetracks as well as on those long freeway drives. Even the rear seats are quite comfortable as well. With proper armrests for the front and back seat passengers and the presence of a large sunroof aids in a more enjoyable traveling experience.

The 2018 BMW M6 Grand coupe interior has the best spacing for all the passengers in the front as well as the rear, while the Porsche Panamera Turbo interior has the least spacing for the passengers. Even if the Audi has the least spacing in the front, the rear seat was slightly better for the RS7 barring the headroom. Some of the additional interior features which aid in an even more comfortable traveling experience are mentioned below:

2018 Audi RS7 Infotainment System

The infotainment system of the 2018 Audi RS7 is equipped with a touchscreen MMI infotainment system. this includes Audi Connect, a USB media interface, and Bluetooth connectivity. Though the system is not packed with features to the brim, we liked the excellent quality display with decent brightness levels and viewing angle. The system is also quite intuitive in operation.

The audio is handled by the Bose Premium Surround Sound System and puts out an impressive audio performance throughout the frequency range. However, we felt that the Porsche Panamera gave out an even superior audio performance in comparison to the RS7. The new Audi RS7 also comes with many other infotainment and audio system features to make the drive more enjoyable. Some of these features are mentioned below:

  • Audi MMI touchscreen infotainment system with navigation plus
  • Audi connect
  • USB audio
  • Steering mounted audio controls
  • BOSE surround sound system
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • CD and DVD player

2018 Audi RS7 Cargo volume

These luxury sedans manage a lot of things, but fitting cargo in the boot isn't one of them. The 2018 Audi RS7 offers massive cargo space thus breaking the tradition of this segment. There is a total of 24.5 cu.ft of cargo capacity which is the best in its class.

Volume (ft. cube) 24.5 17.4 11 13

The Porsche Panamera Turbo also has a slightly better boot of 17.4 cu.ft than others in the segment, while the Mercedes and the BMW disappoint with their tiny boot space of 11 cu.ft and 13 cu.ft, which is not capable of holding much of your luggage or cargo. Thus the Audi RS7 stands high on practicality along with performance.

Exterior
8.1/10

With the RS7 entering the fifth year of production, the 2018 Audi RS7 exterior design has only received minor upgrades from the previous year’s model. Even then, the 2018 Audi RS7 still looks hot like how it came on the first day. With the imposing front fascia getting a large honeycomb grille coupled with matrix LED DRL’s, large air dams, and a masculine hood that gets multiple body lines, the RS7 is still one of the sexiest full-size sedans on sale in the United States. The side profile also looks unmistakably Audi, with its sharp body lines, upgraded 21-inch alloy wheels which are RS design wheels, and fastback roofline, all of which contribute to the superior road presence.

The rear gets a macho-looking bumper with an air diffuser and dual exhausts. Like the front, the rear gets the same LED treatment as well and looks much more premium in comparison to all the competitors. Talking about the dimensions of the 2018 Audi RS7, it surely is not the longest or widest car but surely is the heaviest as compared to its rivals. With that V8 engine onboard, the car weighs 4497 pounds. The wheelbase is quite long, providing better stability to the car and also adds up to the legroom. The ground clearance is low which is fine as it is a sports sedan and not an SUV.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S has the biggest engine it still manages to keep its bulk in check at 4420 pounds. The Porsche Panamera Turbo is the winner in terms of dimensions. All the cars here have a very commanding stance and road presence. The ground clearance is almost the same for all these cars, and you would manage to not scrape on most speed breakers. The Audi RS7 is one of the most feature-equipped cars ever. Some of its standard exterior features are:

  • Daytime running LEDs
  • New Sport Exhaust
  • Retracting Spoiler
  • 21-inch 5-spoke RS design alloy wheels
  • Sunroof
  • Power liftgate
  • LED headlight and taillights
  • Cornering headlights
  • Speed sensitive rain detecting variable intermittent wipers

Safety
8.0/10

The 2018 Audi RS7's safety is exactly what you expected from a German performance saloon when it comes to built quality on offer. The car is mostly constructed in high tensile aluminum and steel, all of which contribute to the car’s superior rigidity and strength. There are zero flexings and creaking as well, which you could see from some of the Asian rivals. The doors also close with a reassuring thud, which also solidifies our belief in the strength of the car.

Unfortunately, the 2018 Audi RS7 hasn’t been crash-tested by both NHTSA and IIHS yet. However, with the inclusion of all the necessary safety features equating to a superior safety on offer, the new Audi RS7 could be termed as one of the best in the segment. Along with the standard safety features, the 2018 Audi RS7 also comes with a lot more advanced active and passive safety features to further up the game in safety. Some of these safety features include:

  • Audi Side Assist Blind Spot
  • Audi pre sense
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Airbags
  • Electronic parking brakes
  • Backup camera
  • Electronic stability control
  • ABS and driveline traction control

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S Vs Audi RS 7

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S is an extremely flashy car and can be pure bonkers at times, something the other cars in the comparison can’t match no matter what. It is a pure tire-shredding, power sliding, ultimate track car. But the 2018 Audi RS7 has an edge over the CLS 63 S with much better performance, more features, and a better interior design.

2018 BMW M6 Gran Coupe Vs Audi RS 7

In the past, we wouldn’t have needed a comparison at all. The crown would have automatically been given to the 2018 BMW M6 Gran Coupe; such was the reputation of its cars. But now, the Bavarian car giant has been slipping behind in the game. No longer do their cars deserve the label of the ultimate driving machine. The M6, even though it manages to put a smile on your face every time you drive it, simply falls behind the Audi RS7 in every aspect.

2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo Vs Audi RS 7

As for the Porsche, it is a great choice for people who want to make a statement, who want to be unique, who want to own a German luxury sedan without having to buy any of the three obvious choices mentioned above. It doesn’t look appealing, neither it has exceptional performance, but it offers great comfort and excellent ride quality. Although the Porsche cars are known for their performance, the 2018 Porsche Panamera falls short of expectation. If you want better performance, Audi RS7 is the better choice.
