Legend has it that Ettore Buggati once called Bentley the “fastest truck in the world”. With the French carmaker name synonymous with performance, this statement would’ve been considered a slap on Bentley’s face, who prided in winning Le Mans races. But fast forward to the 21st century, Bentley has delivered just what Mr.Buggati prophesized. When launched in 2016, the Bentley Bentayga self-proclaimed itself to be the fastest SUV in production, reaching 187 mph. Although the claim is today won by the Lambo.
Legend has it that Ettore Buggati once called Bentley the "fastest truck in the world". With the French carmaker name synonymous with performance, this statement would've been considered a slap on Bentley's face, who prided in winning Le Mans races. But fast forward to the 21st century, Bentley has delivered just what Mr.Buggati prophesized. When launched in 2016, the Bentley Bentayga self-proclaimed itself to be the fastest SUV in production, reaching 187 mph. Although the claim is today won by the Lamborghini Urus, beating it at 190 mph, the Bentayga remains every bit, a fast and solid first SUV ever built by the marque.
The 2018 Bentley Bentayga is powered by a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 engine that makes 600 horses of power and 664 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission drives that power to all four corners. This monstrous power helps the Bentayga do a 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. That's on the quick side, although it can't quite match the Urus's 3.8 seconds. With a starting price of $195,000, the Bentley Bentayga takes on the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and the Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography Dynamic.
The 2018 Bentley Bentayga is available in three trims namely the Base, the Mulliner and the Onyx trim models. You can personalize and customize the Bentayga according to your needs. The Base model pretty much offers everything and is a relative bargain for its price. For those who desire an extra set of premium interior features, the Mulliner trim would be a go-to option. On the other hand, the Onyx trim is a limited edition model. For those who wish to receive less standard features to completely personalize the SUV, the Onyx trim model would be perfect. Also, this trim provides access to many unique colors and interior trim options. Frankly, for the price, even the base model would suffice for you’d get pretty much the top of most premium features. We’d stick to the base model.

$195,000 is the price of the base model of this luxury SUV. At such an exorbitant rate, the English marque offers a wide range of opulent features and bells and whistles one would expect to find in a Bentley, known for their grandeur and powerful automobiles. If, and shockingly, the base model does not meet your expectations, Bentley offers another trim with a more extensive list of opulent features and luxuries. That will cost you a whopping $298,000- yes, all that does comes at a colossal price. Both the trims offer the same powertrains with the only difference being the features and conveniences offered.

Frankly, for the price, even the base model would suffice for you’d get pretty much the top of most premium features. We’d stick to the base model.
Careful not to jab the throttle too hard or the shredded piece of machinery under the hood might just snap your neck. Propelling all the wheels is Volkswagen’s W12 6.0L twin-turbocharged engine married to an 8-speed automatic transmission that snaps gears just as effortlessly as you can snap your fingers.
The car is powerful to drive, and as you go through each driving mode, it gets wilder and stronger. Smooth and excellent performance infused with accurate and smooth gear shifts make the SUV an excellent power-mixed-luxury 4-wheeler.

The most powerful SUV in this field would be the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65, closely followed by the Bentley. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and the Range Rover SVautobiography complete the four-way battle. In the torque as well, the AMG G 65 dominates its rivals with an astounding wave of torque. While other rivals stick to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65 still uses a seven-speed automatic. The Bentley Bentayga produces enough levels of power and torque to push you back to your seat.
Acceleration is always aggressive. With 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The Bentayga is constantly eager to pull away making overtaking maneuvers simple and effortless and if you happen to have an autobahn or death wish, it'll max out a fairly scary 189 mph.
Touting this souped-up SUV to be swift as a fly getting away from getting squatted would actually be an understatement. 0-60s takes a rapid 4 seconds for this 5379 pounds heavy duty. What Bentley also stands for is massive torque, effortless power, and raw performance.

The surprisingly lesser powerful Porsche Cayenne Turbo S shaves off 0.2 seconds from the Bentley. But, is such a tiny difference even noticeable in the real world? The Range Rover together with its Mercedes counterpart takes 5.1s and 5.2s respectively, way off the mark of the two leaders. In the drag test, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is again the top performer followed by the Range Rover but the Bentayga gets crowned as the fastest SUV in this field.
Light and consistent steering glide the car towards where you steer it. The best part about the entire car is its ability to manipulate you into thinking this isn’t an SUV. Controlling the handling is the Active Air Suspension, which literally feels like driving in the air; although drive over hard bumps and you’d not feel the airy feeling you’d hitherto been going flowing through. The self-leveling air-suspension delivers a predictably plush ride with minimal body roll. Bentley has put a 48-volt anti-roll system in the Bentayga which engages the anti-roll system at higher speeds to make sure that you can still corner like you can in a Continental GT. It makes the heavy SUV feel like a small hatch. Bentley claims that the Bentayga has the right comfort of a limousine. Overall, the car still handles well with comfort and ease.
As good as the W12 under the hood propels all the wheels of the Bentayga on the tarmac, the brake calipers stopping them are excellent judging them by standards of a 5379-pound SUV. The pedals feel firm and albeit exhibiting softness, it behaves effectively with excellent feedback from the same. There is a good relationship between the pedal and the braking behavior of the Bentayga. The high-performance carbon-ceramic brakes increase the braking performance of the Bentayga and help reduce fade.

Under the competition, the Porsche has massive brake-rotor measurements and also unbelievable stopping power from 60-0 mph in 106 ft. The stopping distances of other contenders are unknown at the time of this writing but one thing is for sure and that is the large brake rotors fitted in the wheels of the Bentayga do their job perfectly.
The ability to tow a mammoth 7,716 pounds, the Bentley Bentayga is rather impressive for a heavy-duty SUV. Want to pull a trailer? Or that boat lying in your garage? Sure, the Bentley has your back. The rest of the competition has the same towing capacity, with only the Mercedes trailing by mere 16 pounds.

The 2018 Bentley Bentayga is a fuel guzzler. For all it’s worth, it still is average for its type, delivering 14 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway and a combined mpg of 16. In fact, every car in this field faces the same issue.

The Bentley Bentayga turns out to be a fuel-saver in this segment though it boasts a powerful engine followed by the Range Rover. The fuel estimates of the Porsche Cayenne doesn't match up to its rivals much. While the best performers battle it out pretty closely, the worst is no doubt by the powertrain underneath the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65.
Get inside the Bentayga, and immerse yourself in its opulent, roomy and spacious cabin. From the premium leather-stitched steering wheel, leather seating to the highly polished Burr Veneer dashboard, the Bentley gives out a rich and grandeur feeling.
Go up the trim and you’d find even more premium luxuries that’d just boggle your mind. Seating 5, the SUV has great legroom and headspace for both, the front and back, seaters. Comfortable and plush seats enrich further the experience of grandeur in the Bentley Bentayga.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65 is clearly the space SUV in this segment. The head and legroom are way better than what the other rivals are offering. The rest of the rivals offer almost a similar amount of interior room. Just like the phrase"Don't judge a book by its cover", the interior dimensions of the Bentayga may seem low but in reality, it feels like a ship.
The infotainment system on the Bentayga is controlled on an 8-inch color LCD display. Easy to use and intuitive, the system is not as impressive as its competitors in the market. Sadly only Apple CarPlay is part of the smartphone integration feature.
The Bentayga also comes with a 10-speaker sound system but the audio quality does not seem up to its mark but the optional 18-speaker Naim premium audio system is truly designed for audiophiles. The optional rear entertainment system allows two 10.2-inch displays behind the rear seats and two wireless headphones. Some features of the infotainment system include:
SUVs, of course, need to be practical too but the Bentley approach here is a little bit different. While being impressive on mostly all fronts, the Bentley begins to show its weakness, albeit a mild one, in the cargo it allows occupying. With the rear seats intact, the 4-doored SUV can hold 17.1 cube feet of cargo while folding the seats will get you a generous 62.6 cube feet.

The rest of the field allows a more generous cargo volume, with the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65 offering a spacious 24.5 cube feet with rear seats intact and a massive 79.5 cube feet with rear seats folded. The Range Rover comes a far 2nd while the Porsche Cayenne beats the Bentley only with rear seats up. The space offered by the Bentley with the rear seats folded is enough to take a trip to a long weekend.
Interior Features
Some features offered in the car are as follows:
Bentayga is a big car. Period. Measuring longest, the car is a mix-match between all its rivals in this field. With a ground clearance of 8.0, scrapes to the underbelly won’t be of major concern. While the weight is a hefty 5379 pounds, the car performs stellar with very nimble handling and excellent power delivery. The Bentayga has a sheer bulk, a lofty height and requisite bling to get your attention immediately. The long wheelbase of the Bentayga indirectly defines the airy interior room.

With a curb weight of 5691 pounds, the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65 is the heaviest vehicle in this segment followed by the Range Rover while the lightweight of the Porsche Cayenne helps it to swift quickly. With a slanted body, the Bentayga is the longest SUV in this field with an overall length of 202.4 inches. The design of the Bentayga truly justifies its performance and defies physics in many ways.
Exterior Features
Some of the features offered in the luxury SUV are as follows:
It's considered a sin if the precious and beautiful Bentley Bentayga is crash-tested just for the sake of safety ratings. Hence, both NHTSA and IIHS have decided to lay off their hands away from the Bentayga and therefore, the safety ratings are not available for the 2018 Bentley Bentayga. Be no dismayed by this as the Bentayga is safe just any other luxury SUV. Six airbags are standard in the Bentayga that covers the front and rear row including dual front, side curtain and front side airbags. Also, the Bentayga comes loaded with many safety features, namely:
Let’s put it this way, the Range Rover performs as good as much as it costs. Having said that, invest 20 grand extra and you get a much better overall drive and more powerful albeit lesser off-roading capability and fuel efficiency.
It all depends on how much money you have, for both the cars are a luxury model of their respective manufacturers.
Costing almost 30 grand more than the Bentley, the AMG G 65 has a meaner look, and that’s all to say about it, really. It gets undercut by the Bentley on almost every level.
But, most of all features and safety conveniences offered on the Bentley are offered as standard on the G 65. Worth the 30 grand? You could also purchase them on the Bentayga, effectively bridging the gap.
Light, great handling, cheap, and powerful; the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S appeals to the hooligans rather than the “laid-back aristocrats”. Falling into the category of sports SUV more than a luxury model, the Porsche still offers extensive posh features found in cars of this price.
Yet, the Porsche just fails to match its English rival’s jewel-craftsmanship or its muscular aesthetic. If you’re one of those buyers who wouldn’t mind either of them, you’d be saving up 30 grand while being happy with your choice of poison.
Having finally ventured into making SUV’s has paid off handsomely for Bentley. Their famed craftsmanship, quality detailing and powerful performance paves way for easy entry into a more heavy-duty craft. While costing a whopping $195,000 for the base model, we can’t help but wonder why some features, considered standard on other vehicles in this price range, have been omitted. But let’s be honest, if you’ve got this kind of money to buy an automobile, shelling out a couple more bucks won’t really deepen the hole in your rather stuffed pocket.
