Premium leather seats, fine wood with polished metal around the cabin and top of the line brawny engine. All this sounds like a first class airplane seat, right?
Well, it actually is, except for you’ll be flying on the roads at brisk speeds, wrapped in a cocoon of utmost opulence and grandeur.
Bentley offers the Mulsanne in a total of 3 trims, although each one of them features the best in terms of options and luxuries. The sedan can be further customized into a wide catalog of interior and exterior options to truly make it as unique as possible.

The Base Mulsanne is still well outfitted and can be customized to your needs. Bentley does not skimp on any features in the cabin or the exterior and the other trims offer a tad bit more customization in the build of the car.
The Mulsanne Speed comes with s[portier exterior and interior touches. It has a tuned up variant of the same motor, which makes 530 horsepower and 811 foot-pounds of torque. The gearbox and the ECU software come with a bit more performance, which gives the Mulsanne some exclusive drivability.
The Extended Wheelbase variant offers a longer length to the car, which goes almost exclusively into increasing the legroom even further and allowing you to recline your seats to completely flat. Though it does add a hefty bit to your bill.
We Recommend
The Basic sedan is already rather well outfitted in almost every accent of luxury you may desire. The added performance will be a bit too much, considering the car will be chauffeur driven for most owners. The extended wheelbase variant is almost too pricey to justify buying it, considering the addition to legroom it offers. Although even in the basic variant if you outfit the car with some customized features, it can easily touch the half-million mark in price.
The luxurious Mulsanne packs a serious punch under the hood. Powering the car is a 6.8L V-8 twin-turbocharged gas engine. The motor packs plenty of punch and can pull the heavy frame to speeds up to 190 mph. The punchy engine pushes out 505 horsepower at 4,200 rpm, which gives it seamless pushing power at almost any speed range. The is even a hefty 752 foot-pound torque output, engaging as early as 1,750 rpm, which attuned to the perfected gearbox offers almost a linear driving character.
The gearbox is an 8-speed automatic torque converter unit, which although not as quick as some of the sequential or DSG gearboxes that VW cars feature, makes the acceleration seem effortless. The power is delivered to the rear wheels, which in turn makes the handling seem nimble and precise. The Mulsanne Speed has a bump in performance with 531 horsepower and 811 foot-pounds of torque, which takes it to supercar territory.

The Maybach Mercedes S650 offers the most bang for the buck, with outstandingly well-tuned power output. The Rolls Royce Ghost has seamless ride quality and has even more horsepower than that of the Bentley from its V-12, although it lacks the sporty drive feel that modern Bentley cars have. The 7-speed automatic gearbox on the Maybach S650 is also the quickest in its seamless shifts.
Luxury cars aren't meant to zip down drag strips. The cars in the segment are expected to offer a clean get-go and sufficient power to take on almost any kind of road or speed with barely any effort. The Bentley has loads of power, though it is engineered to deliver this output linearly, and hold it through most of its output range, this makes the car have outstanding cruising character. When you decide to test it though, flooring the pedal will get the Mulsanne to accelerate to 60 mph in just about 5.3 seconds. The acceleration continuously pulls through up to the quarter-mile in just 13.1 seconds.

The Bi-Turbo V-12 on the Mercedes Maybach has a super-high redline, which gives it outstanding performance and pushing power up to 60 MPH, the acceleration then slows down to capable cruising and helps the premier Merc reach the quarter-mile in just 13.1seconds. The Rolls Royce from its cousins at BMW has the most linear output, and although you cannot take control of the shifting from the gearbox, it is the fastest car to reach the quarter-mile.
The Bentley Mulsanne is a luxury limousine, it has a super-long length, which can be quite ungainly around smaller streets or tight spaces. The car has rear-wheel steering, which helps it be a hefty bit more agile. The RWD power delivery helps it be exceptionally quick while maneuvering, and the extremely precise steering, which although a bit on the lighter side, barely has even a wobble when going over potholes. Then again, the road-feel is completely isolated from the steering, and it almost feels like driving on clouds.
The gearbox is well-tuned to offer a burst of acceleration when you desire, though it does feel a bit pushy at higher speeds when the gears pan out and you start feeling the shifts. Starting from the get-go though will have barely perceptible shifting and linear power delivery. The powertrain has three modes, Bentley, Sport, and Custom. The Bentley mode will offer a smooth-riding feel with a softer suspension. The Sport mode will harden up the suspension and offer better grip and longer gear-holding. The Custom mode is for you to take the best of what the car can offer and fine-tune it to your preference.
The 2018 Bentley Mulsanne is heavy, much heavier than most of its competitors. Its 5,919 pounds of weight takes some serious power to stop and to control. Although the exceptionally tuned gearbox does offer added stopping and controlling power particularly in the Bentley mode.
The Bentley Mulsanne has large 15.7-inch brakes in the front, with 4-piston calipers coming in black with "Bentley" written on them. The rear discs are 14.6-inch, with similar coloring and styling, Though you would easily miss them in the glossy chrome 20-inch alloy wheels on either axle. The braking feel is reliable, though it doesn't bite as quick as a race-car, the gradual actuation of the brakes helps the driver fine-tune the movement of the car to help in getting a smooth ride.

The Bentley is the heaviest car in the competition, considering its aging frame, we expect the updated 2020 Bentley Mulsanne to be much lighter. Mercedes does wonders in optimizing the weight of the Maybach S650, though its smaller brakes take a rather long distance of 114 feet to come to a standstill. The Rolls Royce Ghost II has the largest brakes on the lineup, which in turn makes it come to a stop the quickest.
The fuel economy on the Bentley Mulsanne is not for the faint-hearted. Although buyers at this price range are generally willing to forgo fuel costs in favor of riding comfort and performance. The humongous 6.8L V8 takes quite a bit of fuel to get it going even when turbocharged, which makes us wonder how inefficient it would be if it was a naturally aspirated unit. But efficiency-wise, you can rest assured that the fuel is being implemented in giving the car blistering output at the wheels. The Bentley has a variety of tech, including a 4-cylinder switch off at cruising speeds, which gives it a great mileage on highways, at 18 mpg.

The Bentley offers the least efficiency in the segment, which is a given considering its hefty weight. Although it is outfitted with the largest fuel tank of the lot, with 25.4 gallons of capacity, giving it the best range in the segment. The Mercedes S650 is the most fuel-efficient car in the competitor, even with its V-12 engine.
The 2018 Bentley Mulsanne has some of the best crafted and outfitted interiors. The centerpiece of the attraction is book-matched veneers all over the dashboard and even on the doors and the center console. Craftsmen meticulously arrange the veneers to have a perfect wood grain that shows off the natural bloom of the wood, while a mirror finish lacquer gives the veneer a liquid gloss.
Only the finest materials and hides are used as upholstery in the luxurious cabin. Seats are covered in tanned, soft-touch hides available in a palette of 24 shades. The interiors are meticulously color-matched and even feature some polished-steel knobs and buttons to offer attractive contrast. The switches are well tested and built to last for ages, just like the timeless Mulsanne.
The front seats have 14-way electrical adjustment, with easy entry and exit movement. The back seats offer an 8-way adjustment, all the seats also have electrically adjustable lumbar support and adjustable heating and cooling. The interior also has 4 zone climate control and can be controlled from every seat individually.

The interiors can have two captain's seats at the back, or a bench as you desire. The captain chairs have better functionality in terms of recline and massage features. The Bentley Mulsanne has the most leg room on the rear row, coming in at a colossal 42.9 inches, which is much more than either the Rolls Royce Ghost or the Mercedes Maybach S650. Some features in the interior of the car are:
The Mulsanne gets an 8-inch touchscreen, with satellite navigation as standard. The system has a well-made layout and easy to use functionality. It even pops up or down as convenient to draw attention to the meticulously made dashboard. The infotainment has 4G LTE WiFi, BlueTooth, Apple CarPlay, and even a Voice Assistant.
The audio system is a 14-speaker layout as standard is adequate, though it can be bumped up to a 20-speaker Naim system with 2200-watts output. Bentley even offers two 10.2 inch entertainment tablets for the rear. The cabin is thoroughly modernized with USB slots decked out throughout the cabin, and even an available microSD card slot for almost 60 GB of memory storage. Standout features in the interior are:
The cargo capacity in the Mulsanne is a bit lacking. considering that the car is quite long and spacious, just 15.6 cubit-feet of storage space seems somewhat lacking. the rear also has a rather large lip, which would be quite hard to load with heavier items. The stylistic rear also takes a hefty bit from the opening of the boot space. The luggage space seems adequate for a small journey for two passengers, but we wouldn't expect any more.

The Mercedes Maybach S650 has even lesser space in its cargo hold. While the Rolls Royce Ghost has a few cubic-feet over the Bentley, although it still doesn't seem roomy enough. The cargo of all cars though has some bright lighting and in the case of the Bentley even holds a complementary umbrella.
The 2018 Bentley Mulsanne has retro-styled exteriors that are now starting to become a bit outdated. The real metal chrome accents at the front though are tastefully made and have a crystalline "Flying B". Paint options are available in a wide variety of finishes and even dual colour to give the car a premium appeal. The headlamps although carrying forward from the ageing design, now feature some 3-d crystalline DRLs which are a definite standout.
the tastefully crafted lines and particularly the limousine-like rear makes the Bentley have an unparalleled road presence. The Bentley with its well made and ultra-finished paint will continue to turn heads for well over a decade wherever it goes. The wheel designs are offered in a plethora of options ranging from headlight finish to 20-inch wheel designs. there are even 21-inch wheels on offer.

The Bentley is the longest and the widest car in the competition. it even is the heaviest car, which shows up in a bit of downturn in terms of handling and efficiency. The Mercedes Maybach S650 features a thoroughly modernised exterior which is quite well proportioned, while the timeless beauty of the Rolls Royce Ghost II is exceptionally attractive. The Bentley sits somewhere in the middle and does not look as well poised at its rivals.
Exterior Highlights in the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne
Bentley goes the extra mile to ensure that the Mulsanne has a well crafted and rugged build quality. The car should score outstandingly in crash-tests, although neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has tested the sedan. The Mulsanne has a wide array of safety features ad tech including automated emergency braking, forward collision warning, and blind-sport monitoring. Some noteworthy safety features in the 2018 Bentley Mulsanne are:
The Maybach S650 is quite a bit cheaper than the Bentley Mulsanne. The S650 goes ahead in terms of throttle response, drivability, and performance. The interiors of the Mercedes S650 are a bit lacking as compared to the Mulsanne, although by the standard of normal cars they are still quite well outfitted. The S650 also has a lower number of customization and premium interior options as compared to the Bentley.
A Rolls Royce is the pinnacle of opulence and luxury. The Mulsanne would hold almost no ground in front of the larger and more expensive Rolls Royce Phantom, though compared to the Ghost, it's more spacious and luxurious. The Ghost still has a hefty bit in terms of better efficiency and even a smooth accelerating character. The Ghost has a better proportioned and stylish interior, not even considering the exclusive nature of the Rolls Royce brand. The Mulsanne comes out on the top in terms of luxury.
For the price tag, the exclusivity of the Bentley, including its interiors and its well-powered engine bring it in as the most recommended offering. The Mercedes Benz Maybach S650 offers quite a bit more in terms of features and performance, while the Rolls Royce is a hefty bit pricier. The car itself exudes luxury and uniqueness, which most definitely make it one of the best made luxury saloons in the market. Overall if you have the money for it, the Bentley is a highly recommended car.
