Overall Rating
The 2018 Buick Envision comes in for an MSRP of $34,015 and is here to compete with the likes of Acura RDX, Chevrolet Equinox, and Ford Edge. This updated moniker comes with a 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder motor producing 197 horsepower and a turbocharged 2.0L motor producing 250 horsepower, along with a few interior and exterior tweaks to make it stand out from the competition.
With the rising competition in the compact luxury SUV segment from the other American and Japanese rivals, the Buick Envision has been facing the heat for quite some time. With the arrival of the updated 2018 moniker of the Buick Envision, Buick is here to attract American car buyers with the well-designed exterior and interior along with a cabin that is loaded to the brim with lots of features that could even shame the cars from a segment above.
Coming at an MSRP of $34,015 for the base Envision 1SV trim, the moniker has managed to attract the United States market with its spacious and comfortable cabin that could easily accommodate five passengers along with an impressive ride quality, all of which were the biggest selling points of even the outgoing 2017 model year. In this in-depth review, we will find out how good of a compact luxury SUV is the 2018 Buick Envision while comparing it with the competitors.
We would recommend you to get the Premium trim, which is the second-highest trim level of the 2018 Buick Envision. In comparison to the other trims, we found that the Premium trim offers most of the needed features without much of a compromise. Along with that, you would also get the smooth and punchy turbocharged inline-4 motor which is leagues ahead of the archaic naturally aspirated 2.5L motor that comes with the lower trims. Safety is taken care of too, with a host of advanced active and passive safety features on offer.

The 2018 Buick Envision comes in five different trim levels, namely 1SV, Preferred, Essence, Premium, and Premium II. The 1SV and Preferred trims are quite bare-bones and hence don't get many of the safety and cabin features like the heated and leather-trimmed seats, rear-cross traffic alerts, and many more. However, it does get the standard 8" touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The hands-free powered liftgate is available too. The Essence trim comes with leather-trimmed seats along with 18-inch alloy wheels and a rear-cross traffic alert system. Chrome roof rack side rails are part of the package too. The 1SV, Preferred, and Essence trims also get the naturally aspirated 2.5L motor.
However, the Premium and Premium II trims get a much superior turbocharged motor producing 252 hp, which is considerably better in comparison to the base motor. The Premium trim also gets features like an Intelligent all-wheel-drive system, 19-inch alloy wheels, and HiPer front suspension. The Premium II is the top of the line trim and comes with all the bells and whistles like a head-up display, GPS navigation system, cooled front seats, automatic parking assist, and many more.

Though the 2018 Buick Envision comes with five different trims, there are some features that are missed out from the standard trim list. These can be had for an additional amount from the optional list, and are priced on the lower side as well. Hence, if you intend to go for the 2018 Buick Envision, do check out the optional features list.
Which trim should I choose for the 2018 Buick Envision?
We would recommend you to get the Premium trim, which is the second-highest trim level of the 2018 Buick Envision. In comparison to the other trims, we found that the Premium trim offers most of the needed features without much of a compromise. Along with that, you would also get the smooth and punchy turbocharged inline-4 motor which is leagues ahead of the archaic naturally aspirated 2.5L motor that comes with the lower trims. Safety is taken care of too, with a host of advanced active and passive safety features.
Buick offers two engine options with the 2018 Envision. It gets a naturally aspirated 2.5L gasoline motor producing 197 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque and a superior 2L turbocharged gasoline motor producing 250 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. Both the motor is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with electronically controlled Driver Shift Control system.
This compact SUV also comes with an AWD system for all the trims except the base 1SV trim. The suspension duties are handled by coil springs on all four corners with HiPer strut front suspension and a four-link setup for the rear. The braking hardware is top-notch too, with all-around disc brakes and ABS on offer.

Being the heaviest of the segment along with having a naturally aspirated 4-pot motor, we were of the assumption that the 2018 Buick Envision would come out as one of the worst in terms of fuel efficiency. However, with a claimed gas mileage of 22 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway, contributing to the combined fuel efficiency of 25 MPG, the 2018 Buick Envision showcased a decent performance in the fuel efficiency section. A generous fuel tank capacity of 17.3 gallons also provides one of the highest combined tank range of 432 miles for the segment.

In comparison, we found that the fuel efficiency put forth by the 2018 Buick Envision is quite impressive. The Envision returned one of the highest combined tank range too, which could only be beaten by the Ford Edge offering a tank range of 462 miles. However, in terms of gas mileage, the Chevrolet Equinox gave out the best figures of the lot with a combined fuel efficiency of 28 MPG.

Though the 197 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque put forth by the base 2.5L motor is quite decent for the segment, it cannot beat the more powerful motors of the Acura RDX and Ford Edge, both of which gave out 279 hp and 245 hp respectively. However, the Chevrolet Equinox gave a lower horsepower figure of 170 hp, but got a slightly better torque rating of 213 lb-ft, in comparison to the Buick.

Is the Buick Envision fast?

Though we expected the 2018 Buick Envision to perform poorly in the acceleration department, we weren't quite disappointed by its performance. Sure, the base motor gave an underwhelming low-end and top-end performance in comparison to all the competitors, however, the mid-range performance was quite decent for the segment. The motor also felt smooth and refined until it reached the red line, where it struggled quite a bit.

Despite that, what impressed us the most is the 2L turbocharged motor, which gave out one of the best mid-range performance for the class. The low-end performance was also quite excellent since the turbo-lag was well under control. Even though we never expected much in terms of top-end performance from a small capacity forced induction motor, it performed admirably well surpassing our expectations. The motor sounds fruity as well.

With a 0-60MPH time of 7 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.4 seconds, the 2018 Buick Envision turned out to be slightly better than both the Ford Edge and Chevrolet Equinox, both of which gave a higher 0-60MPH time of 8.5 seconds and 7.3 seconds. However, the 2018 Honda Acura RDX punched out the best in class 0-60 MPH and the quarter-mile time of 6.2 seconds and 14.8 seconds, respectively.

Will the Buick Envision stop in time?

With the inclusion of one of the largest sized front and rear rotors for the segment along with all the necessary braking features like 4-wheel ABS, electronic parking brake, and hill hold control on offer, the 2018 Buick Envision could easily stop on a dime. The front and rear rotors of 12.6-inch and 12.4-inch helped the car to anchor down without any drama from 60 MPH to a complete halt, and while we performed our traditional braking test. We also found that the 2018 Buick Envision returned great feedback through the brake pedals. The initial bite and progression were spot on too. Even after a complete day of thrashing around the race track, the brakes of the Envision performed as impressively as it did at the start of the day. However, the nose dive on offer was a tad bit higher than the Acura RDX.

Though the braking performance was quite impressive, it managed to be beaten by the Chevrolet Equinox which did the same braking test in just 119 feet. One of the reasons why the 2018 Buick Envision managed to perform slightly lower than the expectation, in comparison to the competition, is due to the higher curb weight on offer. Both the Acura RDX and Ford Edge also did the same feat in a similar albeit a lower distance of 122 feet and 125 feet, respectively.

How does the Buick Envision handle?

The compact SUV's are not the most preferred choice of weapon if you are after a driver-focussed vehicle that is going to put a smile on your face while taking those sweeping B-roads. The same applies to the 2018 Buick Envision as well. The suspension is extremely soft and that results in a high body roll and a lot of understeer if you are a bit enthusiastic around the corners. After a day of thrashing around the Laguna Seca in the wallowy and soft Envision, we managed to understand that corners are not the forte of this SUV. Take it a bit slow, and the SUV will manage to come out with ease. What adds insult to the injury is the light and numb steering setup on offer providing zero feel and feedback. It also doesn't weigh as we like it to, especially while doing high speeds.

However, with all the negatives in terms of handling, we were extremely happy with the slow speed ride quality on offer from the Envision. The broken roads of California were easily absorbed by the 2018 Buick Envision and never managed to transmit even the largest of the irregularities to the cabin. But, the ride quality does affect as the speed increase, making the SUV ride like a boat. The vertical movement never settles and can get quite uncomfortable too.

The 2018 Buick Envision gets the same interior as the outgoing 2017 model and is generally a decent place to spend time in. With the cabin mostly covered in soft-touching plastics and subtle silver and aluminum accents, the Envision does look quite elegant. However, there were quite a bit of hard plastics too, which stick out like a sore thumb in an otherwise well-built cabin. There are also no uneven panel gaps and fitment issues, which were a common sight in some of the yesteryear Buicks. The switches and knobs are on the quality side too, making it look and feel premium. One thing that we zonked in this cabin is the multiple materials and finishes, making it look mix-matched.
Like all the General Motors products, the seats get all the important features like electronic adjustability along with heated and ventilated functions too. The under-thigh and lower back support for the front seats were also quite decent. However, we disliked the seat base, especially for the front seats, due to it being very hard which made us feel tired after a few hours of continuous driving. The rear seats are also not the best we have seen from the segment, due to a slightly poorer under-thigh support on offer.

The 2018 Buick Envision showcased slightly poorer cabin space in comparison to the competitors like the Ford Edge and Chevrolet Equinox, both of which received a better front and rear row space in terms of headroom, legroom, and shoulder room. Even the Acura RDX also managed to impress us with its better space management. Nevertheless, the space on offer in the 2018 Buick Envision's cabin is not appalling by any means.
The 2018 Buick Envision gets the same 8-inch touchscreen Buick IntelliLink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard. This system is highly intuitive to use due to its polished interface and excellent touch response. We also loved the screen quality with top-notch viewing angles and high brightness levels too. The audio is handled by the Bose 7-speaker audio system, which showcased punchy bass and brilliant high-frequency output. In comparison to the competitors, none of them could match the infotainment and audio system on offer in the 2018 Buick Envision.
The 2018 Buick Envision also comes with much more infotainment and audio system features to make the traveling experience even more enjoyable. Some of these features are mentioned below: Â
Although the 2018 Buick Envision managed to impress us with its great cabin that not only looks opulent and premium but also the features that come as standard with the trims. Some of these standard interior features that come with the 2018 Buick Envision are mentioned below:
Open the electronic tailgate of the 2018 Buick Envision and you would be met with a decently sized boot with nifty storage areas incorporated to the side bulkhead, along with under boot storage too. There is also the availability of a 12V charging socket, which would come in handy while camping and on those long cross-country drives. The loading bay is flat as well, which is a boon especially for taking in and out of the large airport baggage with ease.

The 2018 Buick Envision offers 26.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats, and 57.3 cubic feet with them folded. These numbers present a dismal show as all of the rivals like Acura RDX, Chevrolet Equinox, and Ford Edge offer better cargo capacity. The Ford Edge gets the best-in-class capacity of 39.2 cubic feet, followed by the Chevrolet Equinox with 29.9 cubic feet. Though the Acura RDX posted a lower capacity of 26.1 cubic feet, the SUV put out a more impressive 61.5 cubic feet of trunk capacity with the second-row seats folded.Â
Buick has always been a brand that follows the traditional American design language and the same continues with the 2018 Envision as well. Though some might call it bland and boring, we think that the 2018 Buick Envision is a decent looking compact luxury SUV. The striking LED DRL's incorporated neatly into the angular headlamp cluster and the exotic Buick badging on the pentagonally sculptured grille makes the car quite pleasing to the eyes. The rounded bumpers and wide air dams also add character to the looks.
However, we aren't a fan of the 2018 Buick Envision when viewed from the sides since it doesn't have any distinctive character that makes the Envision stands out from the vast number of SUVs that are on the American roads today. The large 19-inch wheels and rounded side mirrors do look quite decent, however, it can never be called a looker. In comparison, the Acura RDX loos the best, at least to our eyes. Nevertheless, it is the rear-quarter that looks the best for this compact luxury SUV. The large sweeping LED taillights, integrated spoiler, and imposing silver-coated rear skid plates with dual exhaust tips make the SUV look beautiful when viewed from behind.

Though we are not a big fan of the 2018 Buick Envision's bland design theme, it surely will not be a deal-breaker, since many of these SUVs would be going to the families. With a decent height and width of 66.8-inch and 77.4-inch, we are pretty sure that the 2018 Envision wouldn't go unnoticed due to the subtle elements that make it look pleasing to the eyes of the regular joes.
What elements make the Buick Envision stand out from the crowd?
The 2018 Buick Envision gets a whole host of exterior features to make it stand apart from the competitors. Some of these exterior features are mentioned below:
With the 2018 Buick Envision being constructed mainly in high tensile steel and aluminum, this compact luxury SUV offers superior strength and rigidity, which would further help to reduce the impact up on an accident. This top-notch built quality also helped the car to procure the highest overall rating of 5-stars in the NHTSA crash test. The car performed brilliantly well in the IIHS test as well, getting a good rating in all the subsections of the crashworthiness and crash avoidance & mitigation section.
What made the 2018 Buick Envision show impeccable results in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA and IIHS is not just due to the impressive built quality imparted by Buick. It can also be attributed to a long list of advanced active and passive safety features on offer . Some of these features are mentioned below:
Though the Chevrolet Equinox looks like quite a bargain in comparison to the more expensive Envision, the Equinox is not a match for the premium quality and well-designed interior along with a much more feature-packed cabin on offer. The safety features on offer with the Envision are quite superior too. However, the performance and handling feel quite similar in both cars.
Ford Edge is a nice alternative over Buick Envision if you want a sportier ride. The Edge offers a zesty 4-cylinder engine and also a twin-turbo V6 motor. It also offers a sorted ride and feels nimble around corners too, especially in the Sports trim. The Buick, on the other hand, has a more plush interior. It garnered a superior safety rating too. The Envision also feels a tad bit more upmarket in comparison to the Ford Edge.
The Acura RDX is one of the best compact SUVs available in the United States currently. It offers better cargo capacity and more interior space than its Buick rival. It is more fun to drive too, offering superior driving dynamics than the Envision. It is, however, pricier than the Buick Envision. Even then, we found that the Envision is unmatched in terms of luxury and features list. It gets more safety features too, however, only at the top-end trims.
The 2018 Buick Envision gets a lot of things going for it. This compact luxury SUV is filled to the brim with a bunch of cabin and infotainment features to make the traveling experience more enjoyable. The city drivability and low-speed ride quality are best in the segment too. What makes it even better is the excellent turbocharged motor, which is both torquey as well as smooth. However, the Envision gets a few zonks too. Firstly, the interior space was not up to the mark. Apart from that, the base engine felt lethargic too. The styling was not revolutionary either. Hence, if you are looking for a great compact luxury SUV, we think that there are much better alternatives out there like the Acura RDX and Ford Edge, both of which do most of the things exceptionally well in comparison to the Buick Envision.
