Overall Rating
The year 2018 welcomed an all new Camaro with better upgrades to ensure thrill and safety at the same time. The top end trim ZL1 is equipped with a bigger, faster and a strikingly vocal V8 engine whose performance figures could give the bigger sports cars a run for their money.
America has a grown taste for muscle cars. Beefy vehicles with sonorous engines attract a wide array of customers. Their cheap prices also prove to be the icing on the cake. The Chevrolet Camaro was launched back in 1966 and has been winning hearts ever since.

Since there is only one trim on offer for the ZL1, that is the only option to choose from. However, you can always ask Chevrolet for the Extreme Performance Package if it suits your purpose. The 6.2L V8 roar does reward you with an unstinting ear to ear grin that lasts throughout the 6200 RPM redline.

There is only one trim in the new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. It offers a lot of standard features to serve the purpose. If you ought to spend most of the time with it on the track, then Chevrolet has made proper arrangements to oblige you. There is an optional Extreme Track package that gives the Camaro some aesthetic upgrades to reduce the air-drag. It also adds stiffer race-oriented suspensions, carbon fiber hood and spoiler, and tinted taillights.

The ZL1 packs a massive Supercharged 6.2L, V8 configuration under the hood which unleashes 650 horses and throws 650 ft-lbs of torque on flooring the pedal. If utilized completely, this much power is enough to leave you gasping for air.
This sinister engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission that diverts the power to the rear wheels only, a classic trait of Muscle cars. This transmission setup is a boon for the drifters' community. For $63,795, you get a lot more than what you bargained for.

The Hellcat stands at the lead of this comparison since it produces a hefty 707 HP which is miles ahead of the other two. The Camaro comes next which is then followed by the Shelby GT350. These are just paper figures, if we consider the weight of the cars then this could be a different story.
The 6.2L Supercharged unit on the ZL1 propels it to the 60MPH mark in just 3.7 seconds. Impressive as it is, it also clears the quarter-mile mark in 11.8 seconds.
This mammoth weighs over 3800lbs and still manages to extract such impressive numbers on the drag-strip.

The Camaro outshines the competition here easily. It is faster than the other two cars to breach 60 MPH and also the quarter-mile mark. The Hellcat stays ahead of Mustang till the 60 MPH mark while both clear the quarter-mile mark at the same time.
The ZL1 weighs a hefty 3883 lbs and still manages to come to a halt from 60MPH in a mere 107ft. This proves the abilities of the 6 - piston front wheel and the 4-piston rear-wheel calipers.
The bite from the pads is gradual and convincing. It encourages attacking corners at faster speeds.

The Hellcat, despite being the heaviest of the lot, surprisingly stops quicker than the other two. The Camaro is not far behind but the Mustang, despite being the lightest car of the bunch, covers a considerably larger part of the strip to come to a halt.
Camaros from the past generations have been known to be handled fruitfully. They have always been playful yet productive which has attracted a lot of petrol heads. This new ZL1 doesn't disappoint either. Throw it around the corners and you will be hugged by the seats to contain the centrifugal effect. Floor the pedal and the car takes off immediately leaving a wide grin on your face.
The steering feels well-weighted, precise, and accurate. It might lack the feedback or the sense of road grip though, but that won't scare you off. The suspension system is slightly stiffer in the ZL1 for pretty obvious reasons. They provide enough grip but if you take it to a track, you might be disappointed by some amount of body roll creeping in. Fret not, because that's what the optional extreme track performance package is for.
The ZL1 can churn out a fuel economy of 14 MPG on the highway. Slightly on the lower side, but what else can you expect from an engine as big as the 6.2L V8 setup.

The Camaro manages to stay head to head with the other two contenders. All e-cars cover the same distance on a gallon of gas. The Mustang is disappointing though, it has a significantly smaller engine than the other two yet gulps the same amount of fuel.
The interior in the ZL1 feels plush and airy for the front occupants. The rear row speaks a different story though. It is hard to fit into, and if you could, you'll adopt a knee-in-nose posture which could leave you suffocated. It is a glorified parcel area. The smaller windows hinder the visibility and give a nauseated aura for the rear passengers.
The touch screen infotainment system is highly informative and works flawlessly but it is placed at an unusual angle from the driver. The buttons in and around the dashboard are clustered together which could take a little getting used to.

In terms of interior space, the GT350 is struck out of the competition because it can occupy only 2 people inside. The rear row on the Camaro is also useless but at least it has the option to stuff two more people there. The Hellcat comes out to be the champion in this segment. It can occupy five people with ample room for them. In its price bracket, the Camaro surprisingly covers a plethora of features that gives it a premium touch.Â
The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe offers the all-new infotainment system from GM. The system gets a responsive touchscreen. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system offered in the ZL1 flaunts features like:
The ZL1 disappointingly supports only 9.1cu.ft of cargo space. The trunk opening is also positioned inconveniently at a higher level and is also very narrow. However, it can still carry two average-sized bags for a weekend drive.

The competition is miles ahead of the Camaro in this department. The Dodge takes the clear lead here with a massive cargo space of 16.2 cu-ft. The Mustang follows, with a respectable 13.5 cu-ft of space in the trunk.
Muscle cars are known for their beefy looks and excessive weight. They possess an over-sized engine with menacing vocals. The 2018 Camaro ZL1 is no different. Weighing at 3883 lbs, it has some road presence and takes a while to take off when compared with the conventional super - sleek sports cars.

The Challenger Hellcat is the heavyweight champion of this competition, weighing at an incredible 4448 lbs is then followed by the Mustang at the last. However, the 2018 Camaro in the ZL1 trim looks like a true-blue American Muscle car. Some of the key exterior features in the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 are:
Muscle cars were infamous in terms of safety in earlier times. They were known for the raw power under the hood without any interference from the electronics. The 2018 Camaro comes with a Head's Up display which shows a host of features.
The Camaro however has now changed the mindset and the impressions of Muscle cars. They have loads of electronics for ensuring the safety of the occupants while still mimicking the raw power to retain the definition of a muscle car. The below mentioned IIHS and the NHTSA ratings speak volumes about the quality of safety this vehicle carries.
The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is more practical than the Camaro here. It can carry five people at a time as compared to 4 in the Camaro. The rear row is cramped in the Camaro so the other two people don't even count as occupants. That said, the Hellcat cannot match the agility and the acceleration figures of the Camaro.
Also, the build quality is better on a Chevrolet than in a Dodge. So, if ferrying your family around is a priority, the Dodge makes a better choice. However, if you take your car to tracks occasionally, the Camaro outshines the Hellcat with flying colors.
The Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 has earned itself the title of a Legend now. It has always been the fan's favorite since the beginning of time. However, gs have turned way different now. The Camaro has surpassed the GT350 in terms of performance.
It sports a larger engine than the GT350 and also handles better. The GT350 can only carry 2 passengers at a time whereas the Camaro can still fit 4 if not comfortably. Priced cheaper than the GT350, the Camaro is the outright winner here.
The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 strikes the perfect balance between practicality and sportiness of a Muscle car. It will make sure it doesn't go unnoticed. If you want this kind of versatility from a car, go no further than the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
