Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The Ferrari California T comes with a 3.9 liter twin-turbocharged V8 making 553 hp and 557 lb-ft of torque. The power is managed by a 7-speed automatic that directs all of it to the rear wheels.

The transmission can be manually controlled by the paddle shifters present behind the steering wheel.

The most powerful of the above is the McLaren 570S Spider that makes 562hp. Closely following this is the Ferrari California T which makes 553 hp. Then comes the Audi R8 Spider making 532hp and last comes the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet making 450hp.

2018 Ferrari California T Acceleration Performance

The Ferrari California T does the 0-60 sprint in 3.3 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 11.3 seconds. It will then continue to its top speed of 194 mph. These are quite good numbers, for a sports car.

The fastest 0-60 sprint is done by the McLaren 570S with a time of 3.1 seconds. Then comes the Ferrari California T with a time of 3.3 seconds. This is followed by the Audi R8 (3.5 seconds) and the manual transmission Porsche 911 GTS cabriolet with 4.1 seconds. The same order is maintained in the standing quarter-mile.

2018 Ferrari California T Braking Performance

The Ferrari California T does come equipped with carbon-ceramic disc brakes on all 4-wheels which are 15.4-inch rotors on the front and 14.2-inch rotors on the rear. The brakes are cross-drilled and vented which means they will stay as dry as possible in the wet and as cool as possible under repetitive braking.

The Porsche has the shortest stopping distance from 60 mph to 0 of 98 feet. Following this is the McLaren 570S Spider with a distance of 102 feet and then comes the Audi R8 with 111 feet. We expect the California T’s distance to be similar to McLaren’s stopping distance.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The Ferrari California T offers 16mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and a combined mpg of 18. Ferrari equips the California T with a 20.6-gallon fuel tank which helps it achieve a range of 329 miles in the city, 473 miles on the highway, and 414 miles combined.

The Ferrari California T offers the best-combined range of the above cars of 414 miles. Then comes the Audi R8 Spider with a range of 458 miles, the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS cabriolet (354 miles), and then comes the McLaren 570S Spider with a range of (342 miles).

Interior
7.0/10

The Interior has the capacity to seat 4 people across two rows. However, the rear seats do not have much legroom and are best kept for children, an adult would feel quite cramped. The seats are the 4-way power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats with Manual rear seat easy entry. The interior upholstery features leather and comes in the color of your choice and stitch too.

There is also dual-zone air conditioning to keep people cozy in their own space. There is also Ferrari Tailor-made, which will customize the interior (and exterior) of the California T. You can select the type of seat, the color of leather, stitch any special materials you would like to add to the interior making it bespoke and to your taste.

We reckon the Ferrari California T is the same space for the front row as the Audi R8 Spider, and we would say the California T has more space than the Porsche and McLaren 570S Spider, although as we do not know the exact interior dimensions.

How intuitive is the Infotainment unit of the Ferrari California T?

The infotainment system comes integrated with navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. It has the option of voice-activated controls. The system has the basics but does not Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. For making you deaf other than the engine is a 7 speaker sound system. Some of the features are:

  • Navigation
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • 7-speaker sound system
  • Aux Audio Input jack
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Voice-activated controls

2018 Ferrari California T Cargo Capacity

The Ferrari California T comes with a trunk that measures 12 cu-ft. The rear seats do fold down to create space but do not link to the trunk so you can put your extra bags on the seat without spoiling the leather.

The Ferrari California T has the largest trunk size of 12 cu-ft, which is double the size of a trunk the competition offers. The next largest is the McLaren 570S Spider (5.2 cu-ft), the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet (5.1 cu-ft), and then comes the Audi R8 Spyder with 4.0 cu-ft.

Exterior
9.0/10

The exterior of the Ferrari is a modern interpretation of classic Ferrari convertible styling. It comes with a long hood that houses the twin-turbocharged V8. The car also features a retractable hardtop that stores in the boot that can be configured to have a black roof. The car's exterior is completed with 19” wheels.

There is the option of other wheel designs to select to your tastes. The exterior does have the option to get Carbon Fiber exterior accents. If you choose, Ferrari’s Tailor Made will customize the exterior to your liking without the standard range of paints, wheels, and even materials.

In terms of dimensions, the Ferrari California T is similar to the rest of the cars. However, it is a little taller than the rest by a few inches. The next biggest difference is curb weight, where the Ferrari is on the heavier side of the scale just about 140 pounds lighter than the heaviest the Audi R8 Spyder.

Safety
5.6/10

The Ferrari California T has not yet been tested by the NHTSA and the IIHS. So we cannot comment on the safety ratings. However, Ferrari has installed a lot of safety features in the car. Some of them are:

  • Electronic stability control
  • F1-Trac ABS
  • Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact beams
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Tire Specific low tire pressure warning
  • Multiple airbag systems

Competition
6.0/10

Ferrari California T vs the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet

The Ferrari California T does have more power, better performance and range than the Porsche, but the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet is the benchmark for what a convertible sports car should be and is cheaper too. So whichever, the car you go with, you are not going wrong.

Ferrari California T vs the McLaren 570S Spider

The Ferrari California T is slightly less powerful than the McLaren 570S Spider and is slightly behind the McLaren 570S Spider in performance. However, the Ferrari does come with more space in the trunk than the McLaren making it a better option to travel with than the McLaren.

Ferrari California T vs the Audi R8 Spyder

The Ferrari is more powerful, better in performance, driving range, and space than the R8 Spyder. The Audi R8 Spyder does come with good driving dynamics and this makes it an attractive option as it is cheaper than the Ferrari, but we would pick the Ferrari because it is just better than the Audi in practicality.

Final Verdict

The Ferrari California T is a grand tourer that finds itself at home when it is on a curvy mountain road and crosses states. The Performance is good from a turbocharged engine and comes with plenty of space for luggage for a weekend for two people, which is more than enough to ask for from a Ferrari.
