About 2018 Ford Focus

3.6

Overall Rating

The new 2018 Ford Focus is loaded with high-tech features similar to rivals like the Mazda 3 and Kia Soul. Ford has offered four trim levels with both fuel-efficient and performance engine options. There are two high-performance turbocharged versions of the 2018 Focus- the Focus ST and the all-wheel-drive Focus RS.

Developed on the outskirts of Detroit, the Ford Focus is a well-finished competent passenger car. The Ford Focus is a domestic name among the small families in the United States. The automaker has made various refinements in the journey of Focus. The 2018 Focus, however, doesn’t come with any changes from last year. The 2018 Focus gets outclassed by many prominent rivals that offer better passenger space and modern features. Still, it remains the easy car deserving to be recommended. It offers two body styles-hatchback and sedan, offering great styling and appeal. The performance and sporty Focus trims are just like a cherry on the cake.

There are two high-performance turbocharged versions of the 2018 Focus- the Focus ST and the all-wheel-drive Focus RS. These performance versions compete with VW's Golf GTI and Golf R and Honda's Civic Si and Type R. There's also an all-electric version on the chart that challenges Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt.

Out of all the trim levels, the SEL hatchback is a considerable pick that comes loaded with a 2.9-liter powertrain. You'll appreciate the hatch's features and driving dynamics. The trim offers a large cargo area, dual-zone climate control, and rear parking sensors. The SEL trim of 2018 Focus comes out to be the best value for money offering in the base Focus lineup.

Buying Advice

Out of all the trim levels, the SEL hatchback is a considerable pick that comes loaded with a 2.9-liter powertrain. You'll appreciate the hatch's features and driving dynamics. The trim offers a large cargo area, dual-zone climate control, and rear parking sensors. The SEL trim of 2018 Focus comes out to be the best value for money offering in the base Focus lineup.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

There are four engine options available with the 2018 Ford Focus depending on the trim levels. The base engine is a 2.0-liter I-4 that churns out a maximum power of 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque. The engine is backed by either a five-speed manual, six-speed dual-clutch automatic or a SelectShift six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The 1.0-liter turbo-three cylinder, which is standard on the SE trim, delivers 123 hp and 125 lb-ft and comes paired with a six-speed manual or a six-speed. Meanwhile, the Focus ST comes powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-four, mated to a six-speed manual and delivers a 252-hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. In comparison, Mazda 3 shows its competence by offering the best fuel efficiency figures on the table with 28mpg in the city, 38 on highway, and a combined mpg of 31. Second to Mazda on the table is Volkswagen Golf with a combined mileage of 37mpg. Focus loses its focus in this sector as it stands last with only 28mpg as its combined mileage.

Interior
6.5/10

The 2018 Focus offers a quiet cabin and comfortable ride. The hard door armrests are a plus point to add more comfort to your daily commuting experience. You get comfortable front seats, at least in this price segment. The dashboard gets all the important controls close to the driver's hand. The front row has enough room to accommodate tall passengers and are well-shaped and supportive in all aspects. Undoubtedly, the new Focus is inclined towards offering a spacious cabin.

Although, the rear headroom can be a concern for tall passengers as the rear seat spacing has been surpassed by other rivals in the segment. The steering buttons and climate controls are easy to use and the blue backlighting is comfortable on the eyes as well. The interior storage is well throughout the cabin along with the well-placed cup holders.

The Titanium adds extra luxuries such as heated front seats, a sunroof, and a heated steering wheel.

The Ford Focus got its last makeover in 2015. It still wears dashing cuts. The Ford curves blend from the front end flowing towards the tail.

Competition
9.0/10

Ford Focus vs Mazda 3

Both the Mazda 3 and the Ford Focus go neck to neck in the competition. You may get confused with the trim level they both offer. The Mazda 3 comes in both hatch and sedan body styles as the Focus. You can opt for any of them while looking for a sporty and affordable trim.

Ford Focus vs Kia Soul

You will find more space in the rear of the Kia Soul in comparison to the Ford Focus. The Kia Soul also offers better legroom and headroom. However, there's not much difference in the front seats of both. Ford Focus offers a bigger turning radius that puts it into a messy situation in tight spots.

The better numbers in performance and power of Focus makes it a tough call to choose between the two.

Ford Focus vs VW Golf

The base trim of the Volkswagen Golf is a little pricier than the Focus. But, the interior offered by the Golf is upscale. Volkswagen Golf comes covered with twice the new car warranty than Ford's coverage, thus we advise you to go with Golf.

Final Verdict

With the available options of body style and trim levels, Ford offers you great ability to choose the one best car that suits your budget and driving behavior. Ford Focus is a comfortable car with easy to operate infotainment and amenities. Commuters will appreciate its competitive pricing and attractive features. Big families may look into some alternatives that offer better space. But if you are here for better space and interior features, you may check out Kia Soul and Mazda 3.
