Overall Rating
The 2018 Genesis G90 is available with two very capable powertrains. The standard twin-turbocharged V6 delivers plenty of muscle both from a stop and when you’re already cruising. There isn’t much noticeable difference in the available 5.0-liter V8. Both engines come mated to a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission that downshifts enthusiastically when more power is needed.
Competing with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz CLS 550 with more plush interiors and a prestigious brand badge, the G90 does a fine job with almost all the significant features and power at an incredibly affordable price. The 2018 Genesis G90 offers a little but accurate menu of two options ranging from $68,250 to $71,850. The 3.3 Premium trim is powered by the 3.3-liter V6 engine, while the Ultimate trim levels up the game with a wider range of luxurious features and a monstrous 5-liter V8 engine to fulfill all the fantasies of enthusiasts.
The 2018 Genesis G90 comes in two trims: 3.3T Premium and 5.0 Ultimate. The main difference between the two models is the engine, clearly stated in the trim name. Most shoppers should be fine with the standard powertrain, and you won’t get that many additional features by picking the 5.0 model. In addition to a larger engine, the G90’s higher trim mostly adds luxuries for rear-seat passengers. Both trims are available with either rear- or all-wheel drive.

Genesis offers only two trim choices for the buyers to choose from. The 3.3 Premium variant is packed with a 3.3-liter V6 turbocharged engine to produce a maximum power of 365 hp. The Ultimate trim scales up with a few additional standard features and a turbocharged 420 hp 5-liter V8 engine. An option of all-wheel drive(AWD) is available with all trims with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 2018 G90 comes with two engine options powering the respective trims. The 2018 Premium G90 trim variant is powered by the 3-litre Turbo V6 engine which produces a maximum power of 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission which is the only option in all variants. The sedan stands second only to Mercedes-Benz.

However, if we chart the ultimate trim, it'd be the segment topper with a whopping power of 420 hp and a max torque of 383 lb-ft. As a sedan, the Genesis G90 is an excellent performer with punchy power and thrilling torque. Not the best but the G90's power will give tough competition to its rival cars. The Mercedes CLS, however, can easily outpower the G90. The A7 and BMW 640i might have a similar engine but they lack power big time.
Despite its powerful engine with raging horses under the hood, the 2018 G90 fails to keep up the pace with the rest of the segment when it comes to acceleration. The sedan pulls up from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 secs with which it lies at the bottom of the table, the credit goes to the 8-speed auto transmission with averagely-tuned gear ratios. However, when given some time, the G90 matches the rest of the segment- evident from the quarter-mile figure of 14.1 sec.

Despite the power output, the G90 took a tad more than 0.5 seconds to gain a 60 mph acceleration. The Merced backed with more power was obvious to perform better. The rest of the lot shares the same quarter-mile time, with the CLA just a split second away. Along with Mercedes, BMW stands with a similar 0-60mph timing of 4.1 seconds.
The G90's handling is just fine but the steering lacks response to some extent. The steering is sensation-less but does its job nicely. G90 exhibits top-notch craftsmanship with intelligent body-weight distribution which helps turn a car this heavy without making it feel like a boat. However, looking at the price tag, one shouldn't expect the driving pleasure of a BMW or a Porsche's agility.
The 2018 Genesis G90 compensates its handling with the ride quality. The cabin space, ventilation, heated seats, and climate control everything seems perfect. The cabin is unbelievably quiet and hushes the roar of the V8 completely. The suspensions offer a cushiony ride with minimum movement even on highly undulated roads.
When it comes to braking, the G90 is as sluggish as its acceleration. The sedan has a relaxed pedal that lacks the firmness, preferred by most drivers. G90 exhibits lazy braking and comes to halt from 60 mph in long 120 feet, which is way behind the other competitors of this segment. The reason for this lag may be the sedan's weight, which is at least 300 pounds more than all its competitors.

The Genesis G90 performs poorly when you get a glimpse at its rival's report card. All 3 cards hold up their own just 110 feet as a maximum stopping distance. The G90's 120 feet performance was disappointing. When looking closely, the lightest of the lot, the Mercedes with its 4,158 lbs of curb weight takes the least distance of 104 feet.
The Genesis G90 maintains a combined fuel economy of 20 mpg, which makes it the thirstiest sedan in the segment. The lower economy is the result of the 3.3-liter V6 engine which is bigger than the rest of the competitors except the CLS which unsurprisingly faces the same fate as G90. The CLS 550 sporting a 4.7-liter engine also lies at the bottom of the table with a combined economy of 21 mpg.

The 2018 Genesis G90 isn’t particularly fuel-efficient. With no hybrid powertrain, the 2018 Genesis G90 isn’t among the thriftiest full-size luxury sedans around. Genesis G90 sedans with the twin-turbo V-6 are the thriftiest. There’s no penalty for rear-wheel drive, though: both versions score 17 mpg city, 24 highway, 20 combined.
The Genesis G90 interior is surely exquisite but doesn't reach the pinnacle of BMW or Mercedes-Benz. The leatherette upholstery looks premium with tasteful use of wood. The use of plastic at certain places shows the price difference between rival brands and Genesis.
However, looking at the features, we must say that Genesis has done a splendid job to keep up with the competitors. Heated and cooled seats, 22-way for driver and 17-way for passenger power-maneuvered seats, heated steering wheel, three-zone climate control comes as standard, whereas a buyer has to go harder on its pocket to add these to their BMW or Benz.

The G90 can easily accommodate five people including the driver. Being the highest sedan in the segment, the G90 delivers the most spacious headroom among the competitors. Also, a longer wheelbase gives it humongous legroom in the rear cabin, making it the queen of space in this competitive segment. Major interior features include-
The 2018 Genesis G90 comes loaded with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with navigation, a rotary knob, and Bluetooth. The 5.0 ultimate trim offers an added pair of 10.3 inch rear entertainment screens to provide further excitement. However, unlike its competitors, Genesis lacks the essential smartphone integration options.
Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink, Wifi aren't even available as options, which may compel the buyers to think twice. The standard Lexicon-branded 17-speaker sound output produces an immersive surround sound experience, which is pretty amazing as compared to its competitors. Few key features include-
Despite being the longest in the segment, the G90 occupies most of its rear space for its cabin, leaving a little usable space behind that we call the trunk. The sedan has a 15.7 ft cube of trunk space, which pulls it down at the bottom of the chart, just ahead of the more cramped up Mercedes-Benz CLS.

The 15.7 cubic feet of trunk space, which is about average for a luxury large car, should be enough room for several large suitcases, and while the rear seats don’t collapse, a center pass-through allows you to fit long, thin objects. A hands-free power trunk is standard. When comparing the trunk space, Audi is way ahead of its rivals at 24.5 cubic feet.
The 2018 Genesis G90 almost carries over the same look and style as that of its predecessor. The only notable difference is the LED headlamps, which replace the projectors.
The G90 looks like a car with familiar design elements as that of its competitors but nothing unique of its own. The sedan fails to pose a threat to its rivals with its subtle design and styling.

The 2018 Genesis G90 is the highest in the segment, which helps it provide ample headroom in the cabin. The longer wheelbase gives it the highest ground clearance in the segment and thus homely legroom in the rear. When comparing the curb weight, Genesis comes out to be the heaviest of the lot at 4,063 lbs.
On the safety front, the G90 is loaded to the gills with safety features like automatic high-beam LED headlights that bend with steering wheel inputs, nine airbags, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The 2018 Genesis G90 comes with all the essential safety features as per standards. Some other features include:
The BMW 640i Coupe comes loaded with a similar-sized engine that produces poorer power and torque than that of a Genesis'.
The G90 has a better base package than that of BMW's with all the essential features like parking assist, remote locking, and premium sound system integrated infotainment system at 15 grand lesser than BMW. However, the price difference seems to make sense when we look at the premium styling, handling, comfort, and fuel economy of the 2018 BMW 640i coupe.
The Audi A7 is powered by a 3-liter inline-6 cylinder engine which produces less power and torque than G90. G90 also one-ups Audi in ride quality with a quieter cabin and cozier suspensions at a cheaper base package than Audi's.
However, it offers a plush and luxurious interior equivalent to the BMW's, which is, unfortunately, the only field where Audi beats Genesis.
The CLS 550 sports a bigger 4.7-liter engine, which produces the best-in-class power and torque. When compared to the 5.0 Ultimate trim of G90, the CLS seems just average.
However, CLS basically one-ups G90 in every field- interior, styling, fuel economy, handling, steering. The only catch is the price, Benz is nothing less than 5 grand more expensive than Genesis, which would increase further with add-ons.
The 2018 Genesis G90 offers great performance married with fine handling and driving dynamics. The car doesn't feel exceptional and lacks punch on straight highways due to its lazier acceleration, credits to longer gear ratios. However, the comfort of the cabin and interior features make up for it. So, if you're looking for a good car around 70 grand without wanting to spend more on the add-ons which come with expensive brands, the Genesis G90 stands tall to help you find it.
