About 2018 Kia Sedona

3.8

Overall Rating

Kia introduced an all-new Sedona in 2016 boasting un-minivan like exterior and interiors. The 2018 Kia Sedona inherits all that with little change. With a starting price of $27,000, the 2018 Sedona is cheaper than competition.

Introduced almost two decades ago, the Kia Minivan – the Sedona has always been an underdog. To address the issue, Kia introduced an all-new Sedona in 2016 boasting un-minivan like exterior and interiors. The 2018 Kia Sedona inherits all that with little change. With a starting price of $27,000, the 2018 Sedona is cheaper than competition.

Feature wise, the Kia Sedona is priced lower than the competition across the trim and it should be high on your list if you need more feature for the money you spend. Also, the 2018 Kia Sedona has performed well in crash tests and it's safe to say that it's safe. The build quality ensure the Sedona will serve you well after years of ownership.

Although the Sedona LX ($29,000) delivers plenty of equipment, the Sedona EX at $33,700 delivers goodies like standard leather upholstery and the power lift-gate at a reasonable price. We also recommend adding EX Advanced Premium Package ($2,800) for the advanced active safety features and driver assistance systems.

Overview

Introduced almost two decades ago, the Kia Minivan – the Sedona has always been an underdog. Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The base 2018 Kia Sedona L has a starting price of $27,000. The Sedona remains mechanically the same throughout the range, whereas higher trims add more features and equipment. The Sedona LX ($29,000) most notably adds power sliding doors and gets the optional LX essentials premium package (+$2,400) adding leather upholstery and other luxury amenities.

Engine and Performance
7.8/10

There is only one powertrain available in Kia Sedona, a 276 horsepower 3.3-liter V6 engine mated to a 6-Speed automatic delivering power exclusively to the front wheels. Even though this is one of the smaller displacement engines in this segment, thanks to the direct injection ability of this engine that it produces enough power that helps the Sedona become one of the peppier options in this segment.

Although the engine delivers power smoothly, the 6-speed automatic forces the engine to rev harder on freeways resulting in lower efficiency and higher stresses. Availability of an 8-speed or 9-speed automatics like the ones in competitors is desired.

With a powerful engine under the hood, the Toyota Sienna slams its rivals to reach the top position of the table, and also, it has a pricier tag for a base model. The Chrysler Pacifica seems the best deal for its low price and high power output, while the Honda Odyssey stands below it. Sitting last on the table is the 2018 Kia Sedona.

How quick is the 2018 Kia Sedona from 0-60 MPH?

Weight is an important factor when it comes to all manners of vehicle performance. The Sedona is relatively light in this segment. The Kia Sedona accelerates smoothly and effortlessly for everyday tasks like merging with freeway traffic. Thanks to its light curb weight and powerful V6 engine, the Sedona takes 7.4 seconds to complete the 0-60 mph test. In the same manner, its quarter-mile run is completed in 16 seconds.

The Sedona can charge up to 120 kph.

Acceleration time of 7.4 seconds is quite good for a minivan, but the Pacifica, the Sienna, and the Odyssey are slightly faster. The Odyssey is the fastest minivan taking 6.9 seconds for a 0-60 mph run. In the quarter-mile department, the Chrysler Pacifica twists the fate by taking just 15.1 seconds, followed by the Odyssey and the Sienna, The Sedona is comparatively the slowest contender in this field.

How does the 2018 Kia Sedona handle?

When it comes to handling, the Kia Sedona handles like a large heavy sedan and not really like a truck or a three-row crossover. You don't get nearly as much body roll or tip and dive in this vehicle as you see in those three-row crossovers. When it comes to corner-carving out on your favorite-winding mountain roads, the Sedona handles fairly well for a minivan and the ride quality is not punishing.

The Sedona has a pliant suspension that filters the most type of road undulations with ease. And with that soft suspension and boxy, heavy body, it's commendable that the Sedona handles turns at high speed confidently. The Sedona does have relatively high payload capacity for a three-row vehicle, so if you add people in the back, it's going to settle the rear end ride down.

How are the brakes on the 2018 Kia Sedona?

In terms of braking, the wide tires that every Sedona model wears definitely help the braking score. The Kia Sedona gets 12.6-inch brake disks up front and an 11.9-inch brake disk at the back. Even though this minivan weighs 4,411 pounds, it can stop from 60 mph in 122 feet. It may be a little long for your average midsize sedan, but it's fairly good for a large three-row vehicle.

The braking system of the Toyota Sienna is phenomenal. It takes just 115 feet to halt from 60 mph. Next in line is the Kia Sedona with 122 feet, followed by the Honda Odyssey with 127 feet. The braking performance of the Chrysler Pacifica is not on par with the rivals.

What’s the towing capacity of the 2018 Kia Sedona?

This Kia Sedona was designed to behave as a family hauler and not as a tow truck. Still, Kia is generous enough to offer a towing capacity, which is quite competitive in this segment. The Kia Sedona is rated to tow 3,500 pounds. That said, when loaded with 8-passengers and luggage while towing large loads, the Sedona feels stressed.

The Chrysler Pacifica gains its position back thanks to its incredible towing capacity of 3,600 pounds. The rest of the rivals share the same amount of towing capacity, which is 3500 pounds.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

The Kia Sedona gets 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 20 mpg. While the in-city number is okay, the highway efficiency is downright disappointing, and the blame goes squarely on the old school 6-speed automatic transmission. The Sedona delivers a combined range of 443 miles thanks to its 21.1-gallon fuel tank capacity. Other minivans shift to higher ratios when cruising on the highway, but the Sedona's 6-speed automatic forces the engine to rev hard to keep the pace up. The higher trims with electric steering have slightly better fuel economy numbers than the hydraulic steering equipped lower trims.

The Chrysler Pacifica has been a consistent performer so far, and again it gets praises for its amazing fuel economy. The Honda Odyssey also shares similar fuel estimates to the Pacifica, but it offers a better driving range. While the Toyota Sienna has a decent fuel economy for its size, the Kia Sedona fails to prove its fuel economy with poor figures.

Interior
7.5/10

The Sedona can seat up to 8-passengers in comfort with its liberal 165.8 cubic feet of passenger volume. The Sedona interior is unlike some traditional minivans. For example, the more practical removable center console has been replaced by the better looking fixed console. Impressively, the Sedona boasts best-in-class passenger volume. However, with the aforementioned fixed console and the second-row seats that do not fold flat or remove completely, the Sedona compromises one critical minivan trait - flexibility. The design is typical Kia - simple, usable, and high quality.

The plastics have great fit and finish levels with consistent panel gaps. The buttons are clearly labeled and intuitively arranged with clean horizontal lines and surfaces dominating the dashboard design. In fact, it's quite German. That fixed center console with upscale-looking gear lever heightens the appeal. While the first row has class average legroom, the second-row seats offer class-leading 41.1 inches of legroom to stretch out.

However, the third-row seats with 34.8 inches of legroom fall behind the competitors and are a bit tight for adults.

In terms of cabin space, all the competitors offer similar levels of head and legroom. The only difference is that the Chrysler Pacifica has a maximum seating of 7 passengers while the rest of the competition expands that to 8 passengers. Some of the standout interior features include:

  • Power-sliding rear doors
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Nappa leather upholstery
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Eight-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Leather steering wheel
  • Heated second-row seats

How much cargo capacity does the 2018 Kia Sedona offer?

Cargo room is the big difference between an average minivan and a three-row crossover. The Sedona has 33.9 cubic feet of luggage capacity with all seats up. However, with the third row folded, the Sedona has a luggage capacity of 78.4 cubic feet. These seats also go completely into the cargo floor with the flip of a handle. Further, the cargo capacity expands to 142 cubes with the second-row folded too. Moreover, unlike the removable second-row seats in the Sienna and the Odyssey, the seats in Sedona cannot be removed entirely out of the way.

The Toyota Sienna dominates this field by offering the maximum cargo capacity of 150 cubic feet. The Kia Sedona takes the upper lift in this segment but still, it is low on space when the third-row is folded. The Honda Odyssey is below the Chrysler Pacifica by just a few figures. Thanks to the extremely deep cargo well, the cargo space you get is 2-3 times the cargo space that you find in a three-row crossover.

How intuitive is the 2018 Kia Sedona’s infotainment system?

While the base L and LX trims, you get a 5-inch touchscreen, the EX gets 7-inch UVO infotainment. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available from Sedona LX onwards, and the Sedona SX gets larger 8-inch infotainment. Regardless of the screens you choose, the touch response is quick and interacts nicely with the user inputs.

The base L trim comes with a four-speaker stereo system, while the EX and EX-L trims get a six-speaker sound system as standard. For the audiophiles, the 8-speaker Infinity audio system is available on Sedona SX and SX Limited. Some of the infotainment features include:

  • Two USB ports
  • Satellite radio
  • Rear seat entertainment system
  • Navigation system
  • A 110-volt household-style power outlet

Exterior
7.0/10

If looks of the traditional minivans give you nightmares, the 2018 Sedona will impress you. The front-end design of the Kia Sedona is borrowed off of Kia’s very-popular Sorento. It gets the same Tiger nose grille while it's big, the narrow glass area behind the C-pillar lends it a far sleeker look. There are plenty of horizontal lines running parallel to each other that gives an impression of lightness and hides the visual bulk.

At 201.4 inches long, the Sedona slots right in the middle of the minivan segment. Kia has tried to squish the third-row window to try and give a bit more visual interest. The rear-end of the Sedona was styled to look more like Kia’s crossover products.

The Kia Sedona spans 201.4 inches in length, longer than Sienna but shorter than the Pacifica and the Odyssey. Hence, the Sedona will be less tricky than others to maneuver in town. Its wheelbase is equal to the Sienna at 78.1 inches. The Sedona has best-in-class ground clearance at 6.7 inches. Some of the noticeable exterior features include:

  • Chrome door handles
  • Power Sliding doors
  • HID headlamps
  • Power liftgate
  • Dynamics Bending Lights
  • Fog lights

Safety
9.8/10

The 2018 Kia Sedona scored 5-star in the NHTSA crash test. Although, it got 4-star in the rollover test. It also has performed well in the IIHS crash test but has not received a "Top Safety Pick'' rating. The Sedona comes loaded with six airbags that cover all three rows. Also, the Sedona is loaded with safety technologies to ensure the safety of passengers. They include:

  • Park Assist
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rollover Mitigation (ROM)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD)
  • Brake Assist System (BAS)
  • Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), 4-Wheel Disc Brakes
  • Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)
  • Rear Child-Safety Door Locks

Competition

Kia Sedona Vs. Honda Odyssey

The 2018 Honda Odyssey is an all-new generation. Its newer and lighter platform means it's larger and more spacious than Sedona but still delivers better fuel economy and stronger acceleration. It is also loaded with plenty of modern features, including a child-friendly in-car vacuum cleaner.

However, the Sedona has a classier interior, a quieter cabin, and a lower starting price.

Kia Sedona Vs. Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica is spacious and versatile, just what you expect from a minivan. However, it's also very upscale with high-quality materials and plenty of equipment. The performance is similar to that of the Sedona, but Chrysler delivers better fuel economy.

And if you need a hybrid minivan, Pacifica Hybrid is the only minivan currently on sale delivering impeccable fuel efficiency.

Kia Sedona Vs. Toyota Sienna

The Toyota Sienna is the most dated minivan here. However, it is also the most spacious with class-leading luggage capacity in any cabin configuration. Plus, the Sienna is the only AWD minivan on offer, which seals the deal if you live in snowy areas.

That said, the Toyota Sienna does not offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Although the Sedona is less versatile, it's more upscale.

Final Verdict

The Kia Sedona is unlike some of its well-entrenched rivals. While the rivals offer all-out practicality and flexibility, the Kia adopts a car-like approach for its minivan. It has a fixed center console instead of a removable center console, and the middle row is non-removable. The Sedona has only a single powertrain option. Although the 3.3-liter V6 is smooth and powerful, the 6-speed automatic disappoints on the freeway. Also, there is no hybrid or AWD on offer if you are looking for more efficiency or bad weather capability. However, if you want a minivan but with a more car-like character, the Sedona is a great package at an affordable price.
