Overall Rating

The Land Rover Range Rover stands up against some of the most luxurious full-size SUVs on the market, though it remains unsurpassed in terms of off-road capability and luxury.

This is the flagship SUV of the brand, which offers the best in terms of performance and interior luxury the brand can offer. The Land Rover Range Rover comes with plenty of trim and features, therefore it largely depends on your needs and your budget. The best variants are probably the HSE for comfort and utility, while the Supercharged variants for actual performance. The HSE with diesel engine offers low-end power and outstanding fuel efficiency, while the V-8 powertrain in the Supercharged offers much better off-road capability. The basic car already has a plethora of features and options available, though Land Rover offers a variety of optional packages to further enhance the car. The Drive Pro package is a worthy addition, it offers a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

Standard Wheelbase

The Standard Wheelbase comes in 5 trims, with different engines, comfort, and interior features, tweaked design changes, and other options, offered in each successive model. While the Range Rover Base comes equipped in a decent package, the Supercharged or the HSE hits the sweet spot if you'd want to buy a standard wheelbase Range Rover. Both the trims offer brilliant features on top of the luxurious cabin while also being powerful and fuel-efficient respectively. However, the engine options quickly rack up the price, and similar interior design and luxury is available even on the lower trims

Long Wheelbase

The Long Wheelbase offered by Range Rover offers great ride quality, and better comfort and space. There are 3 trims offered under this version; Supercharged, Autobiography, and SV Autobiography LWB. Similar to the differences in the Standard Wheelbase, the Long Wheelbase differs in successive models with a better overall package. The Supercharged LWB seems like a better buy here as it offers similar features to its standard counterpart, the longer wheelbase comes in at an added $4,000.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Powered by a 3.0L V6 Supercharged engine, the Range Rover produces a power of 340 hp and 332 lb-ft torque, taking 7.1s to reach from 0-60 mph and 13.9s to reach the quarter-mile. For $2,000 more, an optional turbocharged V6 Diesel engine that makes 443 foot-pounds of torque, is also provided by Land Rover. All Range Rovers come with an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD. There is also a plethora of techs like adaptive suspension and offroad-specific tech to make the car exceptional in the outdoors.

Whichever engine one chooses, the Range Rover is butter-smooth when driving. The power delivery is right on the spot, with no hiccups in shifting gears nor while cutting them. It drives pretty well without a strain of noise. The gas pedal responds precisely without a problem while the stop-go system is well optimized. The V-6 is the lowest engine option, while there is also a larger 5.0L supercharged V-8 offered on the Supercharged and the Autobiography, which makes 510 horsepower. The V-8 is further tuned up in the SVAutobiography to give 550 horsepower.

It's competitors, the Lexus LX 570 offers a bigger 5.7L V-8 DOHC engine with a similar 8-speed transmission, which is the same motor used in the Toyota Land Cruiser. The Lincoln Navigator offers the best performance from Ford’s turbocharged 3.5L V-6 which also has a brilliant response thanks to the 10-speed intelligent automatic gearbox.

While every other car provides a more powerful engine and better displacement, the Range Rover still performs at par amongst them. The Lincoln Navigator costs less than the rest of the field and proves to be the better choice if performance is your requirement, though it stutters in actual off-road capability.

Acceleration

With a 3.0L V6 supercharged engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission, the Range Rover reaches from 0-60 mph within 7.1s and takes around 13.9s to get to the quarter-mile distance. That is impressive, because its competitors, the LX 570, Land Cruiser, and the Navigator, all offer more power output, yet their sluggish frames and regular 4WD systems fail to reach the quarter-mile distance as quickly as the Range Rover. The timings for 0-60 mph are a different story; while the Toyota Land Cruiser and Lincoln Navigator are way quicker than the Range Rover, around 0.4 and 0.6 seconds respectively, the Lexus is 0.2 seconds slower due to its added weight.

The higher and more expensive options on the Land Rover Range Rover lineup tell a completely different story though. The V-8 on the supercharged and the autobiography trims accelerate to 60 mph in just about 6.1 seconds, while the even more premium version in the SVAutobiography charges to 60 mph in just about 5.8 seconds.

The Lexus LX 570 offers a bigger engine with better displacement but fails to compete in acceleration. The Toyota Land Cruiser offers similar output to the Lexus and is quicker than the Range Rover in the 0-60 mph range, but fails to catch up in the quarter-mile. The Lincoln Navigator, on the other hand, performs similar to the rest of the field yet fails to catch up with the Range Rover in the quarter-mile.

The Range Rover is also the best in terms of emissions produced. The turbocharged Lincoln Navigator is similarly emissions friendly, though the large naturally aspirated V-8s on the Toyota twins, the Land Cruiser, and the Lexus LX570 perform much worse.

Ride and Handling

The Range Rover is one of the most - if not the most - fantastic and capable off-road vehicles on the market. It handles beautifully while steering with such ease and comfort. The suspension doesn't feel too stiff nor too soft, yet balanced enough to provide a comfortable ride. The ride quality of every Range Rover is so well tuned that on roads, the car can eat up potholes with barely any vibration entering the cabin.

Maneuverable and secure - two words that fit best when describing the Rover's steering capability. While off-roading, the car is rock solid while maintaining a good comfort level for the passengers. Handling takes a hit only when taking sudden, twisty turns, which does make the car roll around a bit. But the car will seldom lose its footing. The steering also is completely on the softer side, which will give you almost no road feel even when you move over rocky terrain.

 Braking

The front brake measures 14.3 inches while the rear measures 13.8 inches on the Range Rover. The car has a curb weight of 4974lbs. It takes a good 124ft to come to a standstill from 60 mph, which isn't too shabby for a car of this size. The Range Rover has an overall great braking system, with a long pedal travel, and doesn't jerk under panic braking. The brake pedal itself is completely soft, almost akin to a smaller car, which makes the car truly effortless to drive.

The rivals offer similar braking performance as that of the Range Rover. The Toyota Land Cruiser leads the field, while the Lincoln Navigator comes last. The Lexus is sandwiched in the middle. Overall, all the cars in the competition come with similar braking performance. But the Range Rover weighs the lightest, thanks to its aluminum-intensive frame, and even has the largest front brakes.

Towing capacity

The Ranger Rover, with a 3.0L engine, can pull an astonishing 7716lbs, more than the weight of the car itself, while the Lexus with a 5.0L can manage only 7000lbs. The Lincoln Navigator, on the other hand, with a similar engine size but much more powerful displacement, manages a towing capacity of 8700lbs, thanks to the exceptionally powerful engine and pick-up truck DNA from Ford. The Land Cruiser sits in the middle of the field, managing to have a maximum towing capacity of 8100lbs. Though 7716 pounds would be enough for you to carry a small camper van in your plush luxurious SUV.

While the rest of the field has more powerful engines with larger displacement, which should theoretically manage to have a better towing capacity, the Range Rover seems more impressive here.. This is further impressive considering that all the other SUVs come built on a mounted on platform akin to pickup trucks, while the Range Rover has a unibody aluminum-intensive assembly.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The Turbocharged powertrain on the Land Rover Range Rover is especially good at giving outstanding fuel economy. The smallest engine, the 3.0L turbo V-6 is quite efficient and can go for around 17 miles in cities, 23 on highways, and 19 combined, per gallon. The turbo-diesel V-6 in the HSE Td6 variant offers mileage akin to some sedan with 22/28/24 for city/highways/combined respectively. Predictably the V-8 engines are much less efficient, with the 510 horsepower supercharged V-8 offering 16/21/18 mpg, while the SVAutobiography rated at 13/19/15 mpg.

The Land Rover gives a decent fuel economy when compared to the competition. In fact, it pretty much takes the crown. The Lincoln Navigator is not far behind, which even after offering colossal performance still manages to eke out quite the brilliant numbers. The Lexus LX 570 and the Toyota Land Cruiser have the same motor under the hood, which although reliable, is quite inefficient in its consumption.

So what would you expect to find in Land Rover's finest models, however basic, interiors? Well, the English manufacturer leaves no stone unturned in terms of handcrafting and style in each and everyevery7.3-inch rear row leg-room.

Every other car in this segment beats the Range Rover in terms of seating capacity. The Lexus and Land Cruiser comes with 8 passenger seating capacity while the Lincoln Navigator allows 7. While not offering a third row, the Range Rover seems to give buyers a second thought if seating capacity is one of the criteria. Although the legroom on the Range Rover is truly spacious which is only beaten by the Lincoln Navigator in its captain’s chair configuration.

The Range Rover comes with the following standout interior features:

  • Leather Upholstery
  • Real wood inserts in the dashboard and centre console
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Reclining rear seats on all trim levels
  • (Optional) seat heating and cooling on all seats
  • (Optional) massaging seats
  • USB sockets
  • CD/DVD Player
  • Heated Front seats
  • Four-zone climate control

Infotainment

The Land Rover Range Rover has two 10-inch touch screens on every trim. These screens replace nearly every conventional control in the luxury SUV, with even climate control and audio volume all completely digital. These screens do take some time to get used to, though they are quite responsive and barely have any lag.

The basic sound system option is a 380-watt Meridian audio system. There is even a 1,700-watt Meridian audio system offered. The cabin even includes ambient lighting and other attractive features. The infotainment system has Bluetooth capability, although Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are missing. There is a highly responsive inbuilt Navigation system available on all versions of the infotainment. The InControl Touch Pro is truly outstanding with its level of compatibility with the SUV. The standout features in the infotainment are:

  • 380-watt Meridian audio system
  • (optional) 1,700-watt Premium audio
  • Inbuilt Navigation
  • Dual 10-inch infotainment touch screens
  • Bluetooth Compatibility
  • Satellite Radio
  • Surround-view camera with a 360-degree view

Cargo Capacity

When considering an SUV, the general perception is that it has a better boot space because of its obvious dimensions. As the Range Rover does not come with a 3rd row, it makes up for that space; it can accommodate a good volume of 31.8 cubic feet space. Behind the 1st row, with the rear seats folded, it can house a meagre 68.6 cube feet.

While the cargo space seems average, it isn't too shabby although one would wish for a lot more at this price point. The Range Rover has the makings of a luxurious family car.

On the other hand, the LX 57, the Land Cruiser, and the Navigator all come with a 3rd row installed. The Navigator has the best overall boot space while the Lexus and Land Cruiser has the same basic bodies and thus even the space is analogous. With the third row lowered all of these SUVs would beat the Range Rover in cargo space.

Exterior
9.0/10

The 2018 Range Rover comes with an updated bumper and grille design, and an integrated exhaust system. While it looks like the same, aged design elements used by Land Rover for the last few years, it still screams out "Range Rover". By all means, it is still a well-designed vehicle with no extra jazz or the sort about it; minimalistic and simple yet unique is what comes to mind when one sees a Range Rover.

The Range Rover seems like it has decent size for an off-road SUV yet the ground clearance does not look like it can take off-roading that easily. Although the SUV automatically heightens or lowers its ground clearance based on the situation, which is up to a maximum of 11.3-inches. While almost no one would ever use their Range Rover for off-roading it nevertheless holds capability comparable to some of the best off-roaders in the market.

The Standard Wheelbase Range Rover measures 196.8in long and 78.1in wide, while it is 73.3in tall, with a ground clearance of 8.7in. The wheelbase runs 115in long, and the curb weight is 4974lbs. The car certainly seems a tad compact when compared to its competitors. While all the cars seem to measure and weigh almost similar, the Range Rover weighs the lightest. The Lexus weighs the heaviest, while the Land Cruiser and Navigator are shy of 100lbs of each other but still more than the Range Rover.

Some standout exterior features in the Land Rover Range Rover are:

  • All exterior LED lights
  • Heated rear window
  • Standard 20' wheels with the option to either increase or decrease
  • Automatic Headlights
  • Rain-sensing windscreen wipers

Safety
7.0/10

The Range Rover has never been subjected to crash tests either by the NHTSA or the IIHS, it being a premium low-volume SUV it will most likely never be tested. The SUV is made with some of the best safety standards and high strength materials. Extensive use of aircraft-grade aluminum is laid out throughout the chassis. In automatic mode, the Terrain Response system uses a variety of sensors to predict surface grip, which effectively means the vehicle will almost never lose its footing. Land Rover outfits the car with a variety of features like Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Monitors to bump up the safety. Features like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, parking sensors, and a rearview camera are standard. Some standout safety features included in the SUV are:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Emergency S.O.S
  • Intuitive Park Assist Front and Rear Parking Sensors

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Vs. Lexus LX 570

Starting at $90,380, the Lexus LX 570 is powered by a 5.7L V8 DOHC engine which produces 383 hp and 403 lb-ft torque. It does 0-60 mph in 7.3s and the quarter-mile in 15.6s. The transmission is an 8-speed automatic. It has comfortable seating, posh interiors, much bigger cargo volume, more passenger seating capacity, 3-row seating, great off-roading.

But it suffers in fuel economy, a bit expensive starting model, average acceleration, and expensive. The Lexus is a great alternative to the Range Rover, but if shelling out a couple more grand does not seem to be a concern, the Range Rover has much better to offer on its higher trims.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Vs. Toyota Land Cruiser

The Land Cruiser offers a 5.7L V8 DOHC engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission, producing 381 hp and 401 lb-ft torque, which enables it to reach 0-60 mph in 6.7s and takes 15.1s in the quarter-mile distance. It offers a 3-row configuration and 8 passengers while offering a much better boot space. All this for $84,315, which is around $4000 cheaper than the Range Rover.

The Japanese SUV does seem like an excellent alternative to the Range Rover, although the interior quality and the overall build isn't quite as luxuriously appointed as the Range Rover.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Vs. Lincoln Navigator

The Navigator offers a 3.5L turbocharged V6 with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain gives out 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a 3-row configuration and can accommodate 7 passengers. The price tag is significantly cheaper at $72,055, much less than what the Range Rover starts at.

It offers a more powerful engine, a great design, quick acceleration from 0-60, huge cargo volume, similar fuel economy, similar emission level rating. Considering the power offered, Lincoln is the best SUV on the block.

Final Verdict

Priced at $87,350 for the most basic model, the Range Rover sure is expensive. It gets even costlier when you go up the trim and the most expensive model is at an astounding price of $208,200. Yet, even the most basic trim, Range Rover Base, offers pretty much all the power, comfort, performance, luxury, and elegance that Land Rovers are known for. While there are other SUVs to consider in the price range, the Range Rover sure is a good pick if you don't mind shelling out the amount. The HSE or the Supercharged trims are recommended in that case, for they offer just about everything one needs in a luxury SUV without getting too generous or extravagant. Although considering the novelty and the fashion statement of the SUV it is a must buy if you can afford it.
