Overall Rating
A German saloon with three star emblem, a luxuriously appointed interior, a ride quality as soothing as a warm bath and supple but strong powertrain.
A German luxury saloon with a three-star emblem, a well-appointed interior, a composed and relaxing ride quality, and a supple and responsive powertrain. All with a small car footprint and ease of driving. It is one of Mercedes-Benz’s smaller executive sedan offerings, although still loaded with technology features and performance. The car comes at a starting price of $40,250 and with only an option of an added AWD costing around $2,000 added to the price.
The sedan is well designed and features the fit and finish evident on Mercedes’s larger and more expensive models. Powering the car is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine making 255 horsepower and 273 foot-pounds of torque. The transmission is the classic 9-speed automatic designed to be speedy and calm at the same time, while the drivetrain can be had in either FWD or AWD.
The Mercedes C-Class is already a rather well-made offering. The only addition we would make is to add the Multimedia Package at $1,250, which adds a few additional features to the infotainment and even includes the Navigation system. The car itself is rather well made and specced even in the basic condition.

One thing that the customers are sure to notice is the price that the new 2018 C-Class has raised when compared to the last year’s 2017 model. But the new model more than makes up for the price difference with an abundance of new convenience and performance features. With available in three different looks- Sedan, Coupe, and the convertible, customers are sure to have a lot of options in hand.
Though the 2018 Mercedes C-Class makes up the price when compared to the 2017 model, it sure lags in modernity to its rivals in the segment. The British 2018 Jaguar XE provides a very strong competition with more added features available in the car. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is available from the starting price of $40,250, with standard features and optional features available at extra cost.

The 2018 Mercedes Benz C-Class comes in three body styles: sedan, coupe, and convertible (Cabriolet). All three variants are available in five trim levels: base C300, C300 4Matic (all-wheel drive), AMG C43, AMG C63, and AMG C63 S. The sedan also gets a plug-in hybrid variant called the C350e. Most C-Class variants come with the same standard features and equipment, except for the high-horsepower engines and sport-tuned components in the AMG models.

The Mercedes C-Class is already a rather well-made offering. The only addition we would make is to add the Multimedia Package at $1,250, which adds a few additional features to the infotainment and even includes the Navigation system. The car itself is rather well made and specced even in the basic condition.
Under the hood lies a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline-4 engine that delivers 255-horsepower, combined with a new 9-Speed Automatic. There is optional FWD or AWD available based on preference. The engine makes maximum torque of 273 lb-ft at just 1,800 rpm that along with the gearbox gives it unparalleled passing or accelerating capability.
The C 300 allows you to switch between driving modes with the DYNAMIC SELECT system, after which the intelligent gearbox springs to action and tunes the transmission as desired. There are ever shifter paddles available in the steering wheel column. The sedan is further offered in AMG variants as well as a plug-in hybrid variant. The AMG C 43 sports a turbo V-6, while the AMG C 63 has a V-8.

Mercedes Benz C-Class base engine is strong, generating 255 hp from a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine, which is right at the top of what most sedans in the class offer with their base offerings. The BMW 330i makes an outstanding 295 pound-feet of torque, which should give it better pushing power. Only the Audi is available in an FWD as standard, all the rest come as RWD.
The new bump in power, 255 horsepower, with the updated and highly modern 9G-Tronic transmission gets the sedan to accelerate faster. The smooth and quick transmission adapts to conditions and driving modes to give you responsive and quick shifts. Throughout any mode, the transmission barely makes a noise and never compromises the ride quality.
The throttle response is as linear as it gets, with the car springing to action with even a minor input.

Compared to the competition, Mercedes is most definitely the fastest. The Jaguar XE follows close behind, followed by the BMW, which seems to catch up a bit at the quarter-mile. The Audi A4 is by far the slowest at getting off the line due to its front-wheel-drive and reaches the 60 mph mark from a standstill in 6.8 seconds.
The new turbo motor is a step away from the V-6 that was featured on the sedan before. The newer engine is much better, which when coupled with the 9-speed transmission, makes the sedan get up to speed capacity and without barely any lag in acceleration. The engine works effortlessly delivering out power, which the transmission puts down exactly at the right time to make the drive as linear as possible. The consequence of this is pristine and comfortable ride quality.
When driving the sedan, you can switch to the Sport+ mode, and the engine springs to action, the shifts are later, and the gears are drawn out to get the most from the engine. The car returns a powerful output, and the small and light frame handles beautifully, particularly in the rear-wheel-drive. Overall the car feels like a well-engineered masterpiece.
Equipped with adaptive braking technology, including Predictive Brake Priming, which sets the pads close to the discs for more immediate response. The 2018 Mercedes Benz C-Class is a completely reliable stock when it comes to braking. The 2018 C-Class takes 131 feet to come to 0 from 60 mph, which surely can be said is not a good number to consider. Although there is barely any instability even when you test the brakes at very high speeds.

While comparing the braking quality of the Mercedes Benz C-Class with others in the class, it does not look good. While the 2018 Jaguar XE takes 123 ft, the 2018 Audi A4 takes 105 ft and the 2018 BMW 3-series takes 123 ft to come to 0 from 60 mph, the Mercedes fall behind with 60-0 at 131 ft.
Of all the powertrains that the 2018 Mercedes Benz C-Class offers, the standard turbo-4's are the most efficient. The basic C300 sedan provides a mileage of 23 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and combined mileage of 27 mpg. With all-wheel drive, the numbers fall to 23/32/26 mpg.

Compared to its rival, fuel economy would be something in the middle of the stack. While the 2018 Jaguar XE and the 2018 Audi A4 give better mileage of 28 and 31 mpg, respectively, the 2018 BMW 3-Series stand side by side with Mercedes on 24 mpg (for the city). Things are pretty much in the same position when it comes to the highway and the combined mileage too.
Even though the C-Class is considered to be an entry-level luxury vehicle, the materials used and sturdy construction exceed expectations. Everything in the interior, from the brushed metal air vents to the dashboard accents, has a metallic vibe to them, which works well with the ambient lighting lines flowing through the interior. Overall it looks like a calming and techno-savvy space. The front seats in particular have everything in easy reach as ergonomics are the focus.
Seating at any position in the C300 is a comfortable affair. The front seats have excellent bolstering, power-adjustment, and great back support. The back seats on the other hand are just average in this regard. The seats have well-styled backs and even enough cushioning to make it a comfortable place to be for longer durations.
Though the rear bench still does not offer enough space.Â

The cockpit has been redesigned to a simple and elegant layout by limiting the number of buttons to the essential functions. The steering wheel now features most of the access controls for almost anything in the infotainment, which makes driving and keeping the hands on the steering wheel a bit easier. But this has led to reaching out to the secondary controls with some digging and thus making the menu structure take some time to become familiar with. Few key interior features include-
Mercedes Benz C-Class comes with a COMAND infotainment system, which scores points for feature content but comes up short when it comes to usability. The trace pad interface that hovers over the main rotary controller is especially challenging to get accustomed to. The screen itself is not a touchscreen, which takes away from the functionality.Â
Voice recognition is quite accurate, even with the top down at highway speeds. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all available as standard. Other options include radio, navigation, and so on. An audio upgrade in a Burmester 13-speaker 590-watt stereo is also offered for those willing to shell out $1,500 for the Premium package, which also includes a 64-color LED ambient lighting. Some standout infotainment features are:
Although cargo space for Mercedes Benz C-Class is adequate for something bigger than carry-on luggage when it comes to convertible models, the trunk is a bit small and might occupy the rear seats to fill in the luggage. The trunk also has a sizeable lip and is not easy to load or unload.

The 2018 Jaguar XE here also leads the pack with a trunk volume of 14.7 ft, which makes it the most practical car of the lot. It is followed by the 2018 Audi A4 and the 2018 BMW 3-Series with 13 ft of trunk volume. Mercedes Benz C-Class has about 2.1 ft of volume less than that of Jaguar XE.
The newly updated exterior bears a strong resemblance to the larger Mercedes sedans, particularly at the front. The new LED accents to the lights work well with the front bumper and the air intakes. The streamlined nose bends into slightly flared fenders. The back has a curved tail with full-LED lights, which makes for a nice and clean profile.

The 2018 Mercedes Benz C-Class is on the heavier side in its class. It is about 150 pounds heavier than the 2018 Audi A4. It is the tallest amongst its rivals, which gives it a strong stance. The sedan is offered with a multi-beam LED set-up for enhanced nighttime visibility. The BMW 330i has the smallest profile of the competitors, though it has comparably better handling.Important exterior features include-
Mercedes-Benz makes some of the most reliable and resilient cars on the market. The newly updated sedan has a chassis that has a high aluminum content as well as a wider and lower stance, which is sure to make it completely safe. The NHTSA has rated the sedan with an overall 5-star rating, while the IIHS has rated the sedan to have generally good ratings. Mercedes even loads up the car with considerable safety and driver-assist tech. Standard safety tech in the sedan includes:
Some optional upgraded safety features include:
The Jaguar is well made and highly well-tuned to offer comparable performance. However, it does not offer the interior refinement as the Mercedes, and the technology in the interior seems to be a bit on the lacking side.
Finally, the Jaguar XE doesn't call for the novelty that the Mercedes brand has.
The Audi A4 is a well-made car and probably has the best fuel economy in the segment. The car is well designed and offers the most spacious interiors as well as the most comfortable ride quality. However, it seriously lacks in the performance department and isn't as intuitive and agile on the road as the C300.
The BMW 330i is the best car to take around for a drive. Although it falls behind the Merc C300 in terms of performance, it is still much better at handling. Space and comfort levels in the interiors along with the interior technology in the BMW are a bit lower than what Mercedes offers at this price range.
So if you are looking to drive the car yourself, the BMW is the way to go, otherwise, the Mercedes offers a better deal.
When it comes to luxury in compact sedans, C-Class is pretty much the benchmark. Comparing it to most other sedans in the segment makes us realize how much of a bargain the Mercedes C-300 is. Even though it doesn't offer the best space or the best cargo capacity, the Mercedes still betters its competitors in terms of interior design and overall luxury. The automaker even fits the C-Class with a host of technology features to seal the deal. As such, the sedan is a highly recommended car in the segment.
