Acceleration

Mercedes Benz E400 has a 3.0L V6 bi-turbo engine that shows its prowess in the 0-60MPH timings. The 9G-Tronic transmission of the Mercedes works smoothly in coordination with the engine and makes the E400 accelerate to 60 mph from standing in just 5.3 seconds.

The quarter-mile timing is not available, but we expect it to be in sub 13 seconds.

In comparison, the BMW 540i is the fastest to 0-60 mph and takes 4.7 seconds. Audi A6 comes second with 5.1 seconds, Mercedes E400 is third at 5.3 seconds, and Cadillac is last at 5.7 seconds. In quarter-mile timings, Audi A6 is fastest at 12.1 seconds, followed by BMW’s 12.3 seconds. The last on the table in finishing quarter-mile is Cadillac with its timing of 14.2 seconds.

Handling and Steering

Most of the people buy the E-Class because they want to reach their destination as comfortably as possible. The suspension is pretty good at tackling road undulations, and the interior space is super quiet. If it is fitted with optional air suspension, the ride feels as if you're on a cushion that floats over bumps.

The E 400 is equally relaxing in town as on the highway. Still, with the 9G-TRONIC transmission and bi-turbo V6 engine, the E400 manages to offer 20 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined with city and highway driving.

In terms of fuel economy, Mercedes, Audi, and BMW have identical city mileage figures at 20MPG whereas, on the highway, Audi and BMW are identical at 29 MPG, Mercedes and Cadillac are identical at 27MPG. Cadillac stands last with 19MPG in the city, 27 on the highway, and combined mileage of 22MPG.

2018 E400's cabin is masterfully crafted with genuine leather, and on the whole, feels like the S-class as soon as you get inside the car. The front has got these 4 vents and a giant 12.3-inch high-resolution central infotainment screen. There is no digital driver cockpit, which should have been standard instead of the 2 big analog dials and small multi-function display in the center. The steering mounted controls with a touchpad make it super easy to control every feature.

The 2018 E400 is super spacious from the inside. Its supportive front seats come with electrical adjustment and a memory system to make you feel comfortable. You even get 4-way electrically adjustable lumbar support as standard to help reduce backache on long journeys. Both front seats come with height adjustment. The back seats are made easy by the wide rear door openings. There's more than enough leg and headroom for passengers over 6-foot tall to get comfortable. In terms of interior space, Cadillac has the best front headroom and legroom at 40.4 inches and 45.7 inches, respectively. BMW has the best front shoulder room at 58.7 inches. At the back, the BMW 540i has the best rear headroom at 38.8 inches, Mercedes E400 has the best shoulder room at 57.1 inches. 

Infotainment

The standard satellite navigation system is good but not like AMG models as they get enhanced features. The shortcut buttons to use the beautiful infotainment are placed in the natural hand-resting position when driving the car. To work the touchpad, a bit of skill is needed, but when you drive it daily, it gets to you and you feel very connected.

The only letdown is the driver's cockpit doesn't have the digital setting, instead, it gets 2 big dials and a small multi-function display. Few key features include-

Cargo Space

One cannot expect a lot from a luxury midsize sedan in terms of cargo capacity. The 2018 E400 boot space is 13.1 cu ft. There's more than enough space to carry bags or large suitcases, but the Mercedes raised boot opening means it's not quite as easy to pack full of bulky items. The sedan doesn’t get any option of folding down the luxurious seats for added space.

In terms of boot space, the BMW 540i has the largest boot by volume at 18.7 cu ft. The closest rival to that kind of space is Audi A6 at 14.1 cu ft. Mercedes has the least space at 13.1 cu ft. We know the design is highly subjective, but we're head over heels with the way E 400 looks. The alloys are 18 inches, there is a power tilt and slide sunroof and the polished aluminum strips on the doors and windows give it a luxurious look. The design of the car looks absolutely purposeful and premium, which you want at this price. The long wheelbase and lower stance with LED headlights at the front give the sedan a modern and sleek look. 

But there is one element that does look a bit too weird. The way the front grille sticks out in front of the headlight, which from some angles looks like it got an extended nose job done, but all in all it looks perfect. The height of the sedan is 57 inches, which provides for a good aerodynamic stance. The E 400 weighs in at 4,034 pounds.
