The new Mini Cooper Hardtop 4 Door is available in only two configurations where the base level Cooper is a bit more economical than its sister Cooper S variant, which boasts its performance ability with its larger engine and standard drive modes. If you are on a limited budget you can go for the base variant which is quite peppy with its turbocharged three-cylinder engine. If you want better performance then you can opt for the Cooper S trim.

Both Cooper and Cooper S offer 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines respectively. It gives the base car 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the S trim churns out 189 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Both of these variants have been coupled with six-speed manual transmission and there is also an optional six-speed automatic.

Even with its weight and four doors, the Cooper still has nimble handling and doesn't affect its performance. The same is the case with Fiat 500 L, which may lean on the heavier side, but is held strong by a powerful engine that doesn't let the performance suffer.

2018 Mini Cooper Hardtop 4-door Acceleration Performance

The 2018 Mini Cooper is able to 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds, the standing quarter-mile in 15.4. The Mini Cooper S does the 6.2 seconds, the standing quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds, and will achieve a top speed of 146 mph. 

The Mini Cooper 4-door hardtop is the fastest of the above cars in both the 0-60 time and the standing quarter-mile. Then comes the Honda Civic with a time of 7.5 seconds and 15.5 seconds. The Ford Focus SE and Fiat 500L do the 0-60 sprint in 7.6 seconds and 8.0 seconds, respectively and both do the quarter-mile in 16.2 seconds.

Having a longer wheelbase helps Mini Cooper provide good ride quality and improved engine refinement also adds to the comfort. The suspension is tuned to soak lighter bumps, although heavier bumps seep into the cabin.

Its steering is very responsive and there is ample feedback from the wheels. The tires keep the car glued to the road thereby encouraging spirited driving and would allow you to explore the car's potential. Body rolls and mid-corner bumps are barely noticeable making it one of the best cars to drive out there.

2018 Mini Cooper comes with 11.0 inch vented disc brakes in the front and 10.2 disc brakes in the rear. It takes 116 feet to come to a stop from 60 mph. The Brakes also have the feature of hill hold control, ABS, and brake assist. 

The Honda Civic Hatchback posts nearly the same time as the Mini, taking 115 feet to come to a from 60 mph. The Fiat 500L and the Ford Focus Hatchback are just a little behind coming to a stop in 119 and 120 feet respectively, though not by much.

The Mini Cooper is just as frugal as other small-sized cars, perhaps even a little more. The base Cooper, with a 3-cylinder engine, is rated at 28 mpg in the city and 37 on the highway, bringing the combined efficiency to an impressive 32 mpg. The mileage of Cooper S is not as good, with manual transmission managing 26 mpg overall and the automatic transmission gets to 29 mpg overall.

The most combined range is offered by the Honda Civic Hatchback with 409 miles, then comes 

the Ford Focus hatchback with a combined range of 384 miles, Mini Cooper 4-door with a combined range of 371 miles, and then comes the Fiat 500L Pop with a combined range of 343 miles.

Mini Hardtop Cooper can easily accommodate 5 average-sized passengers and its optional sports seats are very comfortable and supportive. By stock, there are 6-way front bucket seats fitted in. There’s a generous amount of cushioning and is contoured well enough for longer rides. 

The front seats have plenty of legroom and headroom which makes the driver comfortable while riding the vehicle, but the rear seats are a little cramped. For added comfort, there is dual-zone automatic front air-conditioning. The interior upholstery is SensaTec leatherette and can be upgraded to leather upholstery which is available in multiple colors.

In terms of front legroom, all the cars are quite similar, just a 2-inch difference between the most and least. The Fiat 500L and the Honda Civic have a little more space in the rear than the rest when it comes to rear legroom.

With its 4-door system, Mini has tried to improve its practicality and surely has managed to offer an acceptable, if not generous, trunk space of 13.1 cu-ft. With its split-folding rear seats, which fold down in the 60/40 configuration, it manages to offer 40.7 cubic feet of trunk space.

With 68 cubic feet of storage capacity, Fiat 500L walks the talk as it has the maximum cargo space in this segment. Ford Focus SE Hatchback (44.8 cu-ft.) and Honda Civic Hatchback (46.2 cu-ft) though a tad bit better than Mini Cooper (40.7) in terms of the amount of space provided with folded seats.

The Mini Cooper looks quite good with its long nose which has been recently redesigned and is quite noticeable. Apart from that, the taillights have been given a square design, while other specifics of Mini remain the same: oval lights on the front fenders, upright windshield, and an oblong grille. 

In terms of wheels, mini by stock will fit 16” wheels to the car and can upgrade all the up to 18” wheels and they do come in multiple designs. The dimensions of the Mini are quite compact and weaving to and fro is quite easy even in heavy traffic. The ground clearance is good for this segment, and the car can navigate through some pretty bumpy roads as well.

Even with 4-Doors added length, it is still shorter in length by 10-inches to the next shortest car - the Fiat 500L. However, the rest of the dimensions are quite similar to other cars. The biggest difference is the weight, even though this is the 4 door version it is still lighter than the other three cars. 

The IIHS nor the NHTSA have rated the 2018 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Hatchback. However, the engineers at Mini have installed plenty of safety features by standard and some can be opted for while purchasing the car. Some of the safety features are:

The latest 2018 variant has seen Mini ditch its traditional two-door, short-roof proportions and replaced it with a longer, four-door profile.
