Overall Rating
the 2018 Porsche 718 Boxster is a mid-engine, rear-drive, two-seat convertible that uses the same underpinnings as a 718 Cayman. With the Cayman now taking the place of the Boxster as the 718 line’s base model, the Boxster has now become more expensive.
Formerly the entry-level model of Porsche's sports car lineup, the 2018 Porsche 718 Boxster is a mid-engine, rear-drive, two-seat convertible that uses the same underpinnings as a 718 Cayman. With the Cayman now taking the place of the Boxster as the 718 line's base model, the Boxster has now become more expensive.
There are two options for the new Porsche 718 Boxster, the base variant, which retails for $57,400, and the more premium S version, available for $71,400. The Base variant has the smaller more efficient 2-liter unit with 300 horsepower under the hood. The Boxster S has a bigger and thirstier 2.5-liter engine with 350 horsepower.
Porsche builds the best sports cars in the business, and with that in mind, you can proceed to take your pick. The cheaper, less powerful base model is by no means a slouch and actually can beat most other sports cars on the track with its telepathic handling. If you wish to buy the Boxster on a budget, the base variant should do just fine. If you fancy the extra power, you can also go for the Boxster S, although that isn't the sweetest deal in the market.

The Boxster S comes with a larger 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with 50 additional horsepower under the hood for nearly 12 thousand more dollars. Both engines are now turbocharged to meet the current emission norms.

The Boxster 718 is powered by two engine options for the 2018 model. First is the 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder boxer engine which makes 300 horsepower, 280 pound-feet of torque. The other, more powerful engine is a 2.5-liter engine that churns out 350 horsepower, 309 pound-feet of torque. It is a very compact configuration and helps keep the center of gravity low.

The power is delivered to the rear wheels via either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic. PDK is Porsche's in-house gearbox and is quick in the application. The manual is only as fast as the guy operating it, but the shifts are slick and smooth, lending a pure driving feel to the car. The Mercedes Benz SLC has a more reliable transmission as it is an electronically aided torque converter type unit, compared to the dual-clutch automatics in some of the rivals.
The Boxster is a light small roadster, and the weight advantage helps it go from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds (for the manual). The PDK is even faster, because of the lightning-fast gear changes, taking only 4.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph. The quarter-mile run is completed in a very impressive 14.2 seconds.

The competitors post similar times to the 718 Boxster both in terms of 0 to 60 mph and quarter-mile run. The SLC 43 roadster meanwhile uses its huge engine and overkill 9-speed automatic gearbox to post a time of 4.6 seconds and 14.0 seconds respectively. The F-type Jaguar is slower to reach 60 mph but then picks up the pace to finish the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds.
If you have any doubts about Porsche's handling ability, then you are probably living under a rock. The German sports car manufacturer has perfected the handling over the years, and it shows.
The car is perfectly balanced 50:50 on the axles, front and rear. The steering wheel, which offers ample feedback, also comes with a sports setting, wherein you can change the way it feels via the electronics, in order to personalize your driving experience.
Braking on the 718 Boxster is handled by disc brakes on all corners, 13 inches in the front and 11.8 in the rear. Combined with a curb weight of merely 2900 pounds, the Boxster manages to come from 0 to a standstill in just 112 feet. The figures are not class-leading, but considering how good all the other cars are, we can let this slide.

The AMG SLC 43 uses much larger 14.2-inch discs at the front and 13.0-inch at the rear to take care of the braking duties. This helps in bringing the car to a halt in a class-leading 104 feet. The F-type uses bigger brakes than the Porsche as well, although the stopping distance is the same.
Fuel Economy isn't a sports car's strong point, but Porsche has used clever engineering to make the Boxster an efficient mile muncher too. It can run for 21 miles in the city and 28 miles on the freeway on a single gallon of gasoline each. This brings the total efficiency figure to an environment-friendly 24 mpg.

The Cayman, quite understandably, posts the exact same figures as the Boxster. The Jaguar surprises by being the most fuel-efficient in here, managing two additional miles per gallon over the Porsche 718 twins. The AMG SLC 43 is the thirstiest in the city owing to its heavier weight but is more efficient on the highway than the Boxster, owing to its higher cruising speed.
The drawback to being a small, nimble, focused sports car is the reduced practicality. The Boxster seats only 2, and so does the Cayman. The exact figures for the interior space are not available, but taller riders will find their heads touching the roof every time they go over a bump.

A Mercedes-Benz will always offer a generous amount of space in the cabin, and the SLC 43 is no exception. The driver and the other passenger sit in relative comfort in a leather-wrapped cocoon with enough legroom to fit a travel bag under there. The Jaguar, surprisingly, offers even better space inside, except for the headroom.
The infotainment system on the 2018 Porsche 718 Boxster offers an intuitive and decently sized touchscreen. Apple CarPlay is optional, but Android Auto is not available. The system is quite intuitive to use. The UI is familiar and is seen on many VW brand models including Audi and Bentley cars.Â
The screen is also kept a bit tilted toward the driver which gives the cabin a driver-centric appeal. You can choose between a 10-Speaker BOSE Surround audio system or a more premium 12-Speaker Burmester audio system. Both systems work exceptionally well to give an amazing audio experience in the cabin. Standard features include:
The Porsche offers the best in class boot space, although it wins by being average amongst the poor. The Boxster swallows one large size bag and a grocery bag, and that's about it. You can keep two more small bags in the space behind the seats, but even that space is limited.

The Jaguar has very poor boot space, which is only capable of fitting two small bags at a time. The Mercedes does not have a boot, but rather a storage space that resembles a large glove compartment on the outside of the car.
The reason for Porsche's great handling and blazingly fast performance is its weight, which is even lower than 3,000 pounds. It weighs as much as a medium-sized sedan and has the dimensions of one too. The Ground clearance is a little over 4 inches, barely enough to save the underbelly from the larger speedbumps.
The 2018 Porsche Boxster is a handsome looking car that offers tremendous performance and luxury. The 2018 avatar gets LED headlamps and taillamps as standard. You can also choose from a wide range of exterior paint jobs. There is also a wide range of colors to choose from for the foldable soft top. You can truly customize your Boxster with unique color choices.

The dimensions are the smallest in class, which lends the Porsche agility which is hard to match. The wheelbase is only 97.4 inches, which reduces the turning radius as well, although the steering doesn't go too far in any direction which is a huge advantage while parallel parking or backing out of a parking spot. The 2018 Porsche Boxster has a lot of unique and distinguishable features on the exterior, like the following:
The new Porsche 718 Boxster comes fitted with all modern-day safety equipment you could want in a car. The NHTSA and the IIHS have not yet rated the car for 2018, although there is no way Porsche would let anything stop it from getting anything but excellent in every count. The standard safety features include:
The heaviest and the most powerful car in this segment, the AMG powered SLC 43 is a car crafted for the business class gentleman. It has the typical Mercedes understated and classy feel to it, which suits perfectly some people.
Sadly, the Mercedes-Benz AMG SLC 43 Roadster is not the best sports car, even though it is the best quality car. It is a car that would much rather prefer arriving in style than arriving fast.
The Jaguar F-type Convertible is a breath of fresh new air in this segment. With the cars now becoming more and more precise, with pinpoint accurate handling, the F-type breaks the tradition by focusing on fun.
It is a blunt knife among sharp razors, although it doesn't mean it is inferior in any way.
The 2018 Porsche 718 Boxster is the best sports car out there in the market, a bold statement, but one which is backed up by a lot of facts. The brilliant acceleration and mind-boggling handling are enough to crown it the king and the drop-top is just the icing on the cake. And this is even before we consider the price. At less than 60 thousand dollars, the Boxster is undoubtedly the best bargain.
