Overall Rating

In 2017, Subaru revised its small, sporty, and surprising BRZ coupe. So 2018 Subaru BRZ returns as the same performance filled and fun to drive two-door with the agility of a table-tennis player.

In 2017, Subaru revised its small, sporty, and surprising BRZ coupe. The 2018 model year Subaru BRZ returns as the same performance-filled and fun-to-drive sports car, with the agility of a table tennis player. Only this time there’s a brand new 2018 Subaru BRZ tS. The tS treatment is supposed to sharpen the car’s already exceptional handling to make it a driver’s nirvana.

The 2018 Subaru BRZ comes with a starting price of $25,595 and packs an intense punch of light-weight athleticism and powerful Boxer-4 madness. With the slick 6-speed manual on offer, the entire driving experience transforms into excitement and intense engagement at the flick of the start button. The Subaru BRZ's rivals include the Audi TT, the Toyota 86, and the BMW 230i.

All the trims use a 2.0-liter Subaru Boxer four-cylinder engine and a 6-speed manual shift stick. The Limited trim offers automatic transmission which brings the engine power down to 200 hp from 205 hp in manual trim. The higher trims are equipped with premium features like the LED fog lights, navigation, heated front seats, and a bigger touchscreen. Chances are you will not be able to get your hands on the TS variant. We recommend going for the Limited trim with the six-speed manual. Besides all the premium features it already gets, you can opt for the optional Performance Package priced at $1,195.

2018 Subaru BRZ Review

Pros

  • Perfectly balanced and superb handling
  • Responsive steering even at higher speeds
  • Comfortable front seating

Cons

  • Cramped rear seats
  • Small trunk space

In 2017, Subaru revised its small, sporty, and surprising BRZ coupe. So 2018 Subaru BRZ returns as the same performance filled and fun to drive two-door with the agility of a table-tennis player.

Overview

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

For the 2018 model year, the Subaru BRZ is available in 3 trim options. Of them, the top-shelf 2018 Subaru BRZ tS variant is limited only to 500 units. The base trim packs a lot of basic features as compared to rivals and you only get more of those in the higher trims. Prices of the 2018 Subaru BRZ Premium starts at $25,595. You get several goodies with the BRZ, regardless of the trim you go for. While the base Premium trim is more focused on pure driving engagement, the Limited trim comes with many comfort features without losing out on performance. If you want creature comforts and boosted performance, the new BRZ tS trim would be ideal for you.

All the trims use a 2.0L Subaru Flat-4 engine and a 6-speed manual shift stick. The Limited trim offers an automatic transmission, which brings the engine power down to 200 hp from 205 hp.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The 2018 model year Subaru BRZ offers a 2.0L Boxer-4 engine, which is capable of generating 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque, thanks to the updated airbox it got last year. These figures, however, slightly drop to 200 hp and 151 lb-ft if you opt for the automatic transmission. Either way, all that power can be sent only to the rear end of this coupe, which makes it the perfect backroad companion.

Even though the engine is small, it feels quite lively due to its rapid power delivery, but the engine lacks power down-low on the powerband, which is disappointing. The revving noise of the engine is harsh, and can be irritating to the ears on longer rides. But as there are no turbos hampering the flow, the throttle response is immediate. Also, that close-ratio six-speed manual is unbelievably fast with shifts. It makes driving this two-door extremely enjoyable.

Among its rivals, Toyota 86 has the exact same engine. It is also equipped with a 2.0L Boxer-4 engine capable of delivering 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. Then again, for about $10,000 more than the BRZ coupe, Audi's TT coupe offers you a turbo-four making 220 hp and 258 lb-ft torque. The BMW 230i, however, comes with a super-quick 8-speed automatic that snaps through gearshifts at extremely high speeds. The BMW also makes significantly more power than the other cars in the lot.

How Quick is 2018 Subaru BRZ's Acceleration?

Even though power delivered from the engine is instantaneous, the 2018 Subaru BRZ manages to accelerate well only when shifts are kept above the 4,000 rpm mark. As there is hardly any power below that, you will be able to feel the engine struggling.

Pairing the 2.0-liter flat-four with the six-speed automatic further diminishes performance as both power and torque are turned down by 5 hp and 5 lb-ft. It is, however, more on point with shifts but the downshifts tend to get noisy at times. The 2018 Subaru BRZ goes from 0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds, which does feel a little underwhelming. At the drag strip, the BRZ puts down a quarter-mile time of 15.0 seconds, which again, is worse than what you'd expect. However, on empty roads, the BRZ does not shy away from hitting spicy top speeds of up to 143 MPH

Comparing the competition, it gets clear that the Subaru BRZ's numbers are quite similar to its Toyota counterpart, the 86. Also, it is a tie between both BMW 230i and Audi TT when accelerating to the 60 mph mark from zero, it is the former which wins in a quarter-mile race. Also, at 155 MPH, the BMW 230i is the fastest.

How balanced is the Ride and Handling of the 2018 Subaru BRZ?

The Subaru BRZ two-door coupe has always returned a joyful ride experience due to its highly communicative suspension system. The suspension system is finely tuned to make the drive sporty yet comfortable. The handling is responsive and the driving dynamics feel tight and athletic. The steering is easy to deal with and is incredibly responsive, which makes the driver feel confident while maneuvering the car and making sharp turns. The car is lightweight and balanced, which enables the car to have better weight distribution, and therefore more cornering grip.

Still, for the year 2018, there's a brand-new STI-tuned variant of the BRZ. It's called the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS. This race-tuned trim gets 18-inch STI wheels and stiffened Sachs suspension kit as standard. Besides that, the ride has been fixed with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires for extra traction. While these make the car drive more sportily, comfort definitely takes a bit of a hit. But the level of feedback that the driver feels inside the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS really enhances the entire feel on a race track.

How Strong is the Braking Performance of 2018 Subaru BRZ?

The Subaru BRZ's brake pedal of the car feels tight yet comfortable to apply. Though not the best in class, the braking setup of the vehicle is impressive. The 2018 Subaru BRZ brakes from 60 to 0 mph in 116 feet, showcasing impressive braking performance.

Opting for the limited-edition tS trim equips the car with bigger wheels, grippier tires, and fatter Brembo performance brakes for all four corners. The 12.8-inch front discs and 12.4-inch rear ones allow the car to stop quicker than the regular BRZ. The 2018 Subaru BRZ tS slows from 60 to 0 mph in 109 feet, which is pretty impressive.

Overall, the braking performance is still very average. Among its competitors, the BMW 230i is the heaviest. Hence, it requires the longest distance to come to a halt. But the 2018 Audi TT is the quickest to stop from a speed of 60 mph, in just 105 feet, despite also being heavier than the BRZ.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

Having a Boxer-4 engine has its own perks, one of them being high fuel efficiency, which is a major upside. The fact that the 2018 Subaru BRZ's Boxer-4 is naturally aspirated makes it all the more economical when it comes to fuel consumption. Pairing this non-turbo Boxer-4 engine with the six-speed automatic, the BRZ coupe's MPG ratings skyrocket. The Subaru BRZ Limited manages to return 24 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined. These figures are impressive for a commuter car alone and pretty incredible for a sport-focused coupe like the BRZ. Furthermore, the 2018 model year BRZ comes with a 13.2-gallon fuel tank, which enables it to a driving range of up to 383 miles on the highway.

While the BRZ returns decent fuel economy figures, competitors just manage to do it a little better. The Toyota 86, despite being the BRZ's twin, offers to return 24 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on highways. Other than that, both the Audi TT and BMW 230i get more powerful engines that are also more fuel-efficient. They even have bigger fuel tanks for a longer-lasting range.

Interior
7.5/10

The interior of the 2018 Subaru BRZ definitely feels premium and comfortable for the price. Its standard leather-wrapped steering wheel has a good grip and the knobs and buttons are placed right, adding to the convenience of the user. The adjustable steering wheel enables the driver to choose the most suitable position for better control. The BRZ offers a good amount of space for the front passengers, but the same can't be said for the second row. Getting into the back is fairly tricky as well, so unless you really need to fir two kids at the back (unlikely!), the rear seats are best left untouched.

At the same time, the big windshield of the Subaru BRZ provides good front visibility to the driver. Even getting in and out of the car is relatively easy due to the large doors, but only as long as you are accessing the front row. Other than that, there are a few visible panel gaps and the insulation is not up to mark. On paper, the 2018 Subaru BRZ can seat 4 people. The front seats are roomy and comfortable with ample legroom and headroom. The seats have good contour support and the front seats come equipped with a six-way manual adjustment for setting the best driving position.

The cabin materials feel adequately appointed, but nothing fancy. Build quality is decent, but the overall convenience and feel of the cabin miss out on what Subaru usually offers with the rest of its lineup. All in all, we're fairly impressed by the interior, but there undoubtedly are places where the BRZ can improve. Some key interior features offered with the 2018 Subaru BRZ coupe include:

  • Suede-finished Dashboard.
  • Power-Adjustable Seats.
  • Leather Seating Surfaces.
  • Simulated Alcantara Steering.
  • Brushed Aluminum Pedals.
  • Contrast Leather Stitching.
  • Analog Gauge Cluster.

Like most sports coupe, the rear seats of the car feel more than cramped. The base trim comes with cloth seats, whereas the top trims get plush leather upholstery. As far as passenger comfort is concerned, it is the BMW 230i that has the most spacious cabin overall. At the front row, the 230i comes with the most headroom, while the BRZ and the 86 offer the greatest shoulder space. The Toyota 86 also comes with the most legroom at the front. The rear seats of all the cars in the lot are tight with a capital T. The BMW 230i comes with the most headroom, shoulder space as well as legroom at the back, if you really want to go fast on a budget and fit two adults at the back, the BMW 230i might be better suited for your needs.

2018 Subaru BRZ Cargo Capacity

The 2018 Subaru BRZ comes with the smallest cargo space in its class, measuring 6.9 cubic feet. BRZ’s two-door cargo space is not large enough, which is a common issue in sports cars. Still, it offers more second-row legroom than the 2018 Audi TT, which again has a bigger boot. If you really are in need of carrying luggage, the best we can suggest is using the rear seats for cargo, and ask your rear passengers to take a cab instead.

Exterior
7.4/10

There are not many changes on the exterior front of the updated Subaru BRZ. For the 2018 model year, the BRZ continues to be that elegant, aerodynamically designed coupe we all admire. The eye-catching curves and lines on the bodywork, combined with sleek-looking head and tail lamps and a stylish rear spoiler give this car the perfect sporty appearance.

It comes in beautiful and exotic color options to choose from. This sports coupe runs on 17-inch wheels. However, going for the top 2018 Subaru BRZ tS would fetch you 18-inch STI alloys. Besides that, the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS gets underbody spoilers, a pedestal-style trunk spoiler finished in carbon fiber, blacked-out exterior trim, and exclusive Cherry Blossom Red accents up front and at the back. It definitely brings out a sportier appeal of the BRZ.

Safety
9.2/10

The 2018 Subaru BRZ comes with great safety features, and stands as safe as it is sporty. The IIHS has also rated the 2018 model year BRZ "Good" under many of its tests. Based on these scores and the excellent safety features offered with the BRZ, it is entirely safe to say that the sports car's occupant protection merit can definitely be relied on. The 2018 BRZ is equipped with basic safety features like several airbags, traction control, auto-leveling headlights, and brake assist. Other safety features of the 2018 Subaru BRZ include:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS and Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Dual Stage Driver and Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags

Competition

Subaru BRZ vs Audi TT

Audi's TT coupe is a fine example of German engineering and craftsmanship. It is powerful, agile, and very practical for a coupe of its merit. Still, the Subaru BRZ is not to be taken lightly. First of all, even the top-tier TS variant of the 2018 Subaru BRZ is about $10,000 less expensive to own. Despite that, it does everything Audi TT can do just as well. In fact, the BRZ is not equipped with a high-tech all-wheel-drive unit. It still inspires enough confidence in a driver.

Subaru BRZ vs Toyota 86 GT

While both of the cars, the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota 86 GT are basically the same car, the Subaru and being the same size, and the interiors having similar dimensions, the 2018 Subaru BRZ offers a little more comfortable rear seating area than the Toyota 86 and a little more enhanced placement of controls and slightly more premium quality interior, but at last, the decision still comes to brand preference of the user.

Subaru BRZ vs BMW 230i

BMW has always had the reputation of making some of the most driver-focused cars. Well, guess what? The Subaru BRZ is just as much a purist's car. In fact, it is a lot more analog than the almost completely digital BMW 2 Series. This allows the driver to connect on a more personal level with the 2018 Subaru BRZ.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Subaru BRZ is a comfortable sports car returning a joyful ride experience. It is also not very expensive to own. Priced aggressively at $25,959, the 2018 Subaru BRZ offers incredible sports car engagement, gift wrapped with great reliability and noteworthy safety features. While the back seats are cramped, the front of the cabin feels comfortable and well-appointed. Fuel economy is decent too, which definitely adds points in the BRZ's favor. The Boxer-4 feels punchy and delivers instant power.

Despite being a 2018 model year, the BRZ does feel dated, especially when you compare it to what the Germans have to offer. In that case, it is best to spend money on a used Subaru BRZ. A 2017 model year BRZ should be a good bet. However, if you're still considering the updated BRZ, we strongly feel that it offers great benefits for the price it comes with. You certainly can consider the 2018 BRZ for your next purchase.
