The 2018 Volvo V90 is the best-looking wagon out there. It ranks high in the luxury wagon segment and gets a premium cabin, comfy seats, and potent engine options. The T5 is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine while a T6 is a twin charged engine.
Volvo has continued its long booth tradition with the V90 and if you are a wagon enthusiast, this midsize luxury wagon offers some features considered to be top of the line. Of course, you get a plethora of safety features in the car, all of which are designed to not only keep you safe on the inside but to also the people on the outside. The interiors are well worth the premium price tag for the car, which means they are well designed, feel spacious, and most importantly highly comfortable.
The V90 is offered with two motors, namely the T5, which has a 2.0L inline-4 turbocharged motor, and the T6 which has a 2.0L inline-4 turbocharged and supercharged motor. The T5 comes standard with a front-wheel-drive, while the T6 comes only with an all-wheel-drive. Both cars come with a well-tuned 8-speed automatic transmission.
Starting at $49,950, the new Volvo V90 Wagon is offered in two trims and two engine options. The R Design and the Inscription both the trims are available with T5 that is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and a T6 twin-charged engine. The T5 engine comes with a front-wheel-drive while the T6 sends power to all the wheels. Equipped with advanced standard features and amazing built quality the V90 will fit your needs for a family car. Though it loses some points because of its limited cargo capacity when compared to others in the competition.

Unless you are in colder regions the powerful T6 engine which makes 316 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque would be a bit out of place. The T5 already offers some of the best luxury and styling features, which would probably tick most of your boxes. Also adding a Convenience Package will give the car semi-autonomous parallel parking abilities and a 360-degree surround camera.
The Volvo V90 comes with two engine options, T5 and T6. The T5 is a 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a front-wheel-drive layout. It produces 250 horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque. The all-wheel-drive T6 trim gets a 2.0 L Turbocharged and Supercharged engine that churns out 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed Automatic transmission.
The base engine has got sufficient power for most of the daily needs. However, the twin-charged engine offers better power delivery and traction in unfriendly conditions. The transmission does a great job when accelerating, with barely a peep escaping out from the gearbox. Though ask it to downshift and it loses its footing.

Both the Mercedes E400 Wagon and the Audi A4 Wagon have considerably higher power output than the lower-trim of the Volvo. Though the Mercedes seems to be a class apart with its 3.0L bi-turbo V-6. The Subaru Outback has the responsive and well-engineered 3.6L V-6 in its higher trims, which offers the most linear output of the bunch.
The Volvo V90 T5 takes about 6.1 seconds to reach 60 MPH from a standstill. Though the acceleration is quick and speedy. The power delivery from the engine is a bit inconsistent as the gearbox seems to be focused on effortless and linear movement. It performs well at cruising speeds but sometimes fails to deliver when you want instant acceleration.

Bar the Subaru Outback, the Volvo is outdone by both the Audi and the Mercedes in terms of acceleration. Of which the Mercedes is the fastest, returning a rather capable 5.3 seconds for 60mph. The Wagon also lags behind its competitors when it comes to covering a quarter-mile. V90 takes 15.5 seconds to cover the distance while the Mercedes Benz E 400 does the same in 13.7 seconds.
The V90 wagon rides smoothly over most surfaces while the optional rear air suspension improves the ride quality further. The Wagon has surprisingly high ground clearance as well as a long journey for its wheels, which makes it capable of a bit of off-road travel. The ride quality in particular seems well made and much above most of its competitors.
The throttle responds avidly in either engine, though the T6 seems especially proficient at getting a move on. Linear acceleration and gradual slowing is a forte of the wagon, though ask the gearbox to perform overtaking maneuver’s and it stumbles a bit. Despite being the longest in the segment, cornering feels nimble and there is a decent amount of feedback from the steering wheel.
Volvo is known for highlighting the safety aspects of its cars, in which the brakes feel the most reliable and ready to respond amongst its competitors. Along with just the normal actuation, a variety of technology will press the brakes in case they sense a collision occurring, which is a highlight of any Volvo. The Brakes feel firm and solid and there is also not much nosedive while braking at speed.

With a stopping distance of 110 feet, the 2018 Volvo V90 lags behind the Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic as it comes to a halt from 60 MPH in 108 feet. Either of the other competitors is outmatched by the proficient brakes on the Volvo.
The turbocharged motor on the wagon is almost too well-tuned to overcome the likes of what the Germans offer in Audi and Mercedes. The Volvo is a true family mover and will give you great value for money, especially with the T5 engine. Despite its heft, the V90's fuel economy ratings are best in class. According to EPA, the wagon with front-wheel drive returns, 24 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. While the Cross Country brings those figures down to 22/29/25 mpg.

Even though the Volvo offers some great range thanks to its large 14.5 gallons fuel tank it is still outshone by the likes of the Subaru Outback 3.6R and the Mercedes Benz E400, both of which have much larger fuel tanks. The V90 offers a range of around 390 miles on a full tank.
The Volvo V90 comes with the best in class interior quality. The Elegant looking interior with modern tech and the clean contemporary design makes it the best place to be in. The natural wood in combination with metal pieces will make you feel rich and your eyes sparkle.
The seats are some of the most comfortable ones you'll find in any car. The long-wheelbase gives the rear passengers an ample amount of room to spread their legs. The optional features like heated and ventilated seats with massaging front seats are also offered in the higher Inscription trim. Though the basic layout and setup come well versed in luxury which would be enough for most family buyers.

The Volvo has great space to be a family car, and although we wouldn’t expect it to offer executive class seating, almost any sized passenger will be comfortable in the rear seats. The Subaru Outback is the only car offering a third row, and if you move the rear seats back enough it also has the best legroom in the rear. Some standout interior features include:
The car has a humongous 9-inch inch infotainment touchscreen which has the Sensus Connect system. The infotainment itself is rather easy to use and seems thoroughly future proof. It even offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Inscription trim adds 4G LTE WiFi and a navigation system. There is also a premium Bowers & Wilkins 10-speaker audio on offer. Some standout Infotainment feature includes:
Despite being the longest in the segment the V90 does not impress when it comes to hauling cargo. It has 19.8 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats up and 54 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. This takes away points for most users as family buyers generally prefer a large amount of storage space.

Rivals such as Audi Allroad have 24.2 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats up and 58.5 cubic feet rear seat down. Subaru Outback meanwhile leads the class with an impressive cargo capacity of 73.3 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. The Mercedes E400 also offers great space comparable to the Subaru.
The R-Design and the Inscription trim defer in terms of exterior styling, with each having some touches that are unique. While the R-Design looks more robust, the Inscription is a bit more elegant n shape. It is stylish, strong, and has a powerful-looking exterior design. With a total length of 194.3 inches, the V90 is the longest car in this segment. It also has a decent amount of ground clearance while the front and rear skid plates prove its off-roading ability.

Only the Mercedes Benz E400 offers a comparable wheelbase to that of the Volvo, although the V90 is still the widest in the segment. This makes the Wagon have a standout road presence, which with the clean exterior lines and finessed LED DRLs makes it a brilliant statement of a car.
The Volvo V90 being a premium vehicle is not likely to be tested by either the NHTSA and the IIHS, although the reliable aluminum-intensive, high-strength steel frame along with the plethora of features the car offers is sure to make it highly convincing in terms of safety. Volvo is known for innovations in safety systems and they are the first in the world to get a semi-autonomous system, known as Pilot Assist, as the standard feature.
It can operate at the speed of 80 mph and helps the vehicle accelerate, decelerate, and come to a complete stop. But, it only allows you to take your hands off the steering wheel for 15 seconds. Some of the standard safety features are mentioned below:
The Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic Wagon has a major advantage of accommodating 7 passengers in a car with almost the same dimension as the Volvo V90. As an all-terrain vehicle, the Mercedes gets a bigger capacity engine than the Volvo. It's also faster in a quarter-mile and has better 0-60 MPH numbers. Mercedes also offers better cargo capacity than the Volvo. Although the hefty bit of premium and the lacking standard safety tech, which the Volvo offers, does make it a bit more difficult. For family buyers, the V90 seems to be the better choice.
Audi is smaller, more powerful, and much more athletic than the Volvo V90. Both the cars have almost the same passenger volume but the Audi A4 Allroad gets more cargo capacity though being the shortest. The cabin inside the Volvo V90 is more plush and well finished. Although the Audi costs a bit less and is overall the better choice.
2018 Volvo V90 vs Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited
If you don't want to spend much and get all the utility available in the Volvo V90, the Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited is the best choice you can make. Subaru costs almost $10,000 less and offers better cargo space than the V90. It also gets high ground clearance and standard all-wheel-drive which makes it a perfect vehicle for an outdoor family trip or going for some off-roading adventure. If you are tight on budget and need a value for money vehicle, go with the Outback.
The Volvo V90 Wagon is one of the best-looking wagons out there. It ranks high in the luxury wagon segment and gets a premium cabin, comfy seats, and potent engine options. It has less cargo space than most of the rivals and also has a high starting price but that is justified because of its plethora of standard safety features.
