Overall Rating
BMW has resurrected the 8 series after many years and the all new 2019 BMW M850i is the new flag bearer for the BMW brand.
Having its roots in one of the most iconic sports cars in the segment, the BMW M850i steals the stage by its looks alone. But when you hear its magnificent twin turbo V8 engine roar, you fall in love with it all over again. This coupe is now one of the best offerings from BMW and will easily become one of the most sought after. Owning this is going to be a dream for many and a life time achievement for some lucky few. Reviving the 8 series name from BMW’s roster, here is the BMW M850i.
Since there is only one trim available in the lineup, that's all you can buy. However, BMW offers some great packages. Some line the Driver Assistance package improves daily driving experience, while others like the BMW individual composition package alters the look of the car, both inside and out.

In the USA, the 8 series just has a single trim the M850i with just one powertrain option. There's the convertible version of the same and that's about it in the 8 series range until the full-blown M8 is introduced by BMW.

BMW flagship grand tourers couldn't do it with fewer than 8 cylinders, could it? The M850i is powered by a 4.4L, twin turbocharged, V8 engine producing 523 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 553 lb-ft of peak torque at 1,800 rpm. The power delivery is simply pristine and effortless.
Flex your foot in any gear, at any rpm and the engine serves you with oodles of torque. It's calm and relaxed when you want it to be and in no time, it can be raging down the street. The burbling growl of the V8 is pretty sweet too.

The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and while it's not a dual-clutch, the shifts are still slick and precise. The automatic gearbox is so effortless in its gear shifts that you would never even remember to change the gears yourself. It always in the right gear at the right time. You also have the paddles at your disposal.
The BMW M850i takes on the Aston Martin DB11, Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe and the Maserati Gran Tourismo. All of these are outright GT cars and while all of them are powered by V8 engines, the Maserati is the least powerful at 454 horsepower and the Mercedes S63 is the most powerful at 603 horsepower.

The M850i sprints from naught to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds which is plenty fast for such a heavy GT car. It's not the fastest in the competition as that is taken by the Mercedes-AMG S63 at 3.4 seconds. The S63 has the most torque in the competition and hence is the fastest.
The traction from the all-wheel drive, an efficient launch control system and oodles of torque help the M850i achieve that figure. It's faster than the Aston Martin DB11 V8 and the Maserati Granturismo by quite a margin. The Maserati Gran Tourismo is the slowest at 4.5 seconds and that was an inevitable result as it's the least powerful in the competition.
The BMW 8 series was conceived as a grand tourer and it really excels at being that. It will munch on miles effortlessly while pampering you in luxury. The M850i drives somewhat between a sports car and a grand tourer, more towards being the latter.
The M850i is quite a big car and a heavy one at that too. However, what you immediately notice is how nimble and agile the car can be, even with all that bulk. Thanks to the rear-wheel steering, the M850i feels like a much smaller car and wraps itself around the driver very well. It's easier to maneuver the car in the city and out on the highway, it gives greater stability.
The ride is really sublime in the comfort mode. You can effortlessly keep on driving for hours without breaking a sweat while the car gobbles the miles and the imperfections on it too. Dial-up to Sports or Sports mode and the suspension stiffens up and you get a car that's really well balanced around the corners. There are active anti-roll bars that minimize body roll very well indeed and the car is surprisingly fun to drive out on a twisty road.
The all-wheel drive system is rear-biased and sends up to 50% of the power to the front wheels only when it needs to. That means that being aggressive on the throttle does reward with the tail popping out once in a while. Also, the traction from the all-wheel drive really inspires you to push it when you can.
The active steering does not have an artificially added heft to it as we have seen in some BMW GT cars but feels much more natural. It's fairly precise and accurate and while it's not brimming with feedback, you will always be able to tell where your front wheels are. The M850i is an effortless cruiser and fast too. What really impressed us was the surprise element in this car. You just do not expect a car of such dimensions and weight to behave in a certain way, but the Bimmer did exactly that. It's a great grand tourer that is quite fun too.

The brakes in M850i are rather impressive too. The M850i uses brake-by-wire technology which means there is no physical connection between the pedal and the actual brakes but are instead controlled electronically. Unlike most brake-by-wire systems, here in the M850i, it feels a bit more natural than others.
As for the bite, it is very strong indeed. However, in the city, the brakes can be too grabby at times and that's not very pleasant. When you are driving fast out on open roads, they feel more consistent and there are not many hints of brake fade either. We do not know the exact distance it takes to stop from 60 mph yet, but we can tell you that the bite is pretty strong.

The M850i is pretty good with its fuel economy. It returns 20 miles to the gallon combined which is at par with the competition. It's pretty good in the city and highway as well. Being a GT car, it has to be fairly fuel economical as it should not stop too often at petrol stations while munching those miles. Thankfully, the M850i delivers.
The interior of the M850i while still familiar as a BMW has seen some rather distinctive changes. It departs from the family interiors in the 5, 6, 7 or any series and adopts BMW's new interior design language, much like we saw in the new 3 series but still very individual in its own.
The 10.25-inch infotainment screen still takes the center stage on the dashboard but has been slightly redesigned with broader bezels this time around. The climate controls below too have been completely redesigned and the AC vents look much cleaner with the temperature displayed on a screen in between the vents. There are two bands of familiar switches down below from where the dashboard flows down to the main center console. In between, there are cup holders covered in a lovely trim of wood.
The main center console below remains largely the same with the gear selector, the i-drive rotary wheel and several driving function buttons but have been garnished with black gloss trim. However, the most notable things in the interior are the new glass ornaments on the gear lever and the i-drive rotary wheel. A bit flashy they are, but fancy indeed.
There is no wood trim running along with the dashboard anymore but the entire layout has been pretty centralized, still tilted towards the driver and the rest of the dashboard flows very smoothly around you. A rather welcome change. Fit and finish and quality of materials are top-notch as you would expect. Also, we like the plenty of use of handy buttons and that all things are not digital.
The steering wheel remains quite the same but the instrument cluster has been completely redesigned with the speedometer and tachometer facing either direction, thus cleaning up the space on the center of the screen for you to configure it according to your fancy. It takes some time getting used to but the configurable screen is rather useful too.

The seats in the M850i are very comfortable indeed. They come wrapped in the softest leather and are also heated and cooled. They are very well bolstered and long drives out on the highway would be an absolute breeze on these seats. The M850i does not have the best space in class but they are still pretty good.
However, the rear seats are completely unusable. They can never seat an adult, even for short drives and even children will find themselves cramped in the rear seats. They are best left for luggage.
BMW's i-drive system is certainly the best infotainment system in the entire car industry. With multiple ways of interacting with the system, it's very convenient on the go and the system itself is very intuitive and responsive. The 8 series is BMW's flagship and they have loaded it with every technology they could think of. The screens have crystal clear graphics and the interface itself is very smart.
The 10.25-inch screen can be used as a touch screen or you can use the rotary knob on the center console. The coolest party trick is the gesture control by which you can change volume or configure it to do some specific function. The digital instrument cluster is quite configurable too and is operated by buttons on the steering wheel.
Interior Features
The M850i is an elegant looking coupe. Upfront, the kidney grille has sharp edges instead of being rounded off like in most Bimmers and are quite large too. There are M-specification bumpers with aggressive air dams on both ends with sharp cuts and creases and a mild air splitter down below. The headlamps are quite sleek and just in case you didn't notice, the corona LED rings are rings no more but more like C-shaped half rings and it looks rather sexy. The M850i has BMW's laser light technology because of which the headlamps get blue light bars which are a nice little detail. A few bonnet creases and you have a bold but elegant face.
At the sides, you can't help but appreciate the beautiful proportions of the car. A long bonnet and a swooping roofline that extends into a flamboyant tail, the M850i shouts out its GT credentials. Two sharp lines from the air curtain on the front fenders bring out the muscles of the car and the Hofmeister kink on the window line is sharper than ever before. The wide bulging hips add hugely to the character and the 20-inch twin-five spoke wheels complete the look.
It is from the rear where the M850i looks the best perhaps. The rear is quite busy with lots of bulges and depressions and sharp cuts and creases. The LED wrap around tail lamps are very sleek but there are fake air curtains on either side of the bumper which is a turn-off really. There's a huge blacked out portion on the bumper with a mild diffuser and dual exhaust tips finished off in some satin trim.
The M850i excels at being a GT and looks like that too. It is elegant, yet brawny and aggressive and BMW has done a great job at combining these two together in the M850i. It also looks very contemporary with all its beautiful lines.

The M850i is already a large car but it's still not the largest in the competition. The Mercedes-AMG S63 coupe is in a different league of itself. The S63 is the longest and by quite a margin from the M850i. The Aston Martin DB11 is the widest and the Mercedes S63 is again the tallest. The S63 also has the longest wheelbase but by just a margin from the Maserati GranTurismo. The Mercedes is the heaviest of the lot too and the Bimmer is not far behind.
Exterior Features
This is the absolute pinnacle of luxury on wheels from BMW and with the kind of people who would be buying this car, safety is utmost important. This is a car with an array of sensors gauging everything on the road and knows what's up ahead even better than you. The steering, the brakes, the suspension every aspect of the car can jump in to protect you if the need arises. It even knows when you are dozing off behind the wheel and would urge you to take a break. Your life couldn’t be better protected on any other set of wheels.
Prominent safety features are :
The Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe is one of the best grand tourers out there. Based on the S-class, it's luxurious, very stylish and has a great sense of occasion. It is also quite a bit more powerful than the M850i and faster too. There’s no beating that thumping AMG engine that the S63 very proudly boasts of and it's driving dynamics is pretty good for this segment to say the least.
When it comes to the interior, both brands are on par with each other. The technology in either car is the best in the industry and they are equally luxurious with great quality of materials used. The Bimmer perhaps looks the better of the two but there is not much separating them in terms of real-world performance and grand touring. In the end, the BMW M850i is way cheaper than the Mercedes S63 AMG and that is why the Bimmer would be our pick as it is much greater value for money.
The Aston Martin DB11 V8 has been one of the best launches this year and it is a sensational machine. It is a little less powerful and a little slower than the M850i but the dynamics of the DB11 V8 is simply unmatched by the M850i. The DB11 V8 is far more focused as a sports car but is an equally amazing grand tourer. The DB11 V8 is an amazing looking car with simplistic and classy styling and while it's interiors are not as luxurious or tech loaded as the Bimmer, it certainly is not far behind.
Yes, the DB11 sure needs better in-car technology but you wouldn't care about technology so much in this car. The DB11 V8 is every bit a better car than the M850i with the latter only edging ahead with its interiors. However, the DB11 is way more expensive than the Bimmer and if money was not the concern, we would recommend the Aston Martin. Otherwise, the M850i is the better bang for your buck.
The Maserati Gran Tourismo is quite a dated car now. It is the least powerful in the competition and the slowest as well. The technology in the car is dated as well and while the interiors are very luxuriously appointed, it does not match the sense of occasion of the Bimmer. What you get with the Gran Tourismo is an amazing engine with a beautiful sound, the heritage, and rarity of the Maserati brand and an old-school styling which will still turn your head.
We have to admit that the Gran Tourismo still looks pretty cool. The BMW M850i is a much better car in every way, be it the driving dynamics, the looks, the interiors or even the performance. Also, the Bimmer is a little cheaper than the Maserati and makes for a much more complete car. The Bimmer is easily our choice amongst the two.
The 8 series is BMW's new flagship range and it had a lot riding on it on that account. And to our pleasure, the M850i is a very versatile machine that can do a lot of things very well indeed. The M850i has a beautiful engine, it looks stunning and the interiors are brilliantly appointed. It excels in being a GT car and still packs in quite some sportiness which really suits its character.
It could very well suffice all the car needs for one person in just one car. What really works in favor of the M850i is that it's cheaper than its rivals. You can munch miles endlessly in this car and still arrive in style at your destination. You can also take it up on a twisty mountain road and it would surprise you with its agility. The BMW M850i is really many cars in one and a worthy flagship for BMW.
