About 2019 Buick Encore

3.8

Overall Rating

The Encore’s performance is however disappointing. Acceleration is slow due to the sluggish 134 –horsepower four-cylinder engine. Buick’s optional 153 hp engine is a substantial improvement.

The subcompact SUV segment has picked up steadily over the past few years, and its market is expanding more and more at a very fast pace. The reason behind such an explosion of this segment is because of the high usability and practicality the cars in this segment have to offer. Subcompact SUVs bring along the roominess and the ruggedness of a SUV, and combine it with compact dimensions, decent engines and a smooth ride quality. The fuel economy offered by the subcompact SUVs can put some sedans to shame as well.

Buick- a premium car manufacturer, known for their large and powerful SUVs also entered this pace back in 2013 with their Encore. The Encore is a pocket-size SUV with traits of the bigger Buick Enclave. The Buick Encore is known for its well-laid interior with high-quality materials, it looks upscale than most of its rivals. For the year 2019, Buick has not changed anything with the Encore, except for some reshufflinh among the trims. Every Encore receives Buick's QuietTuning treatment, which includes different sound-deadening measures. Apart from this, there is a lot more that you need to know about this tiny marvel.

If you decide on purchasing the Buick Encore SUV then we would recommend the Essence trim. Even though th Buick Encore Essence trim is slightly more expensive than the other available trims, we would recommend it as it carries over the features available on the Buick Encore Sports touring trim along with some exquisite luxury. The Essence trim also adds better safety features and hence helps to make the Buick Encore a safer car. The Essence trim is five grand costlier than the base trim, but it is completely worth it and hence we recommend the Buick Encore Essence trim.

Cons

Nice small SUV with low mileage for a 2919. Very good performance on highway. Seems to get good gas mileage but only had it for a week. Live the lumbar in the drivers seat along with the power Also has remote start.

2019 Buick Encore Review

Pros

  • Smooth ride on high speed
  • Compact Size
  • Attractive interior
  • Generous standard safety tech

Cons

  • Tepid performance
  • Languid acceleration
  • Uninspiring handling
  • Higher price than rivals

The Encore’s performance is however disappointing. Acceleration is slow due to the sluggish 134 –horsepower four-cylinder engine. Buick’s optional 153 hp engine is a substantial improvement.

Overview

Every Encore receives Buick's QuietTuning treatment, which includes different sound-deadening measures. Apart from this, there is a lot more that you need to know about this tiny marvel.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The Buick Encore is a compact crossover that is offered in four trim levels. The trim starts with the Encore 1 SV (the base trim), and Preferred, Sport Touring, and Essence. The base trim offers a 1.4-liter torubocharged engine. This same engine is equipped on the Preferred trim as well. The 1 SV and the Preferred trims come well-eqiuipped in terms of features, but the better convenience features are present on the higher trims. The higher trims are better equipped in terms of safety as well.

The Sports Touring trim and the Essence trim are equipped with a more powerful varient of the same 1.4L engine. When it comes to the offered warranty, the 2019 Buick Encore is covered with a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and a six-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. Standard featuers on all the trims include 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, heated mirrors, cruise control, auto headlamps and keyless ignition and entry.

The Essence and the Sport Touring also get an optional navigation system and a 7-speaker Bose premium audio  system. All the trims except the base trim get an optional sunroof.

We Recommend

If you decide on purchasing the 2019 Buick Encore SUV then we would recommend the Essence trim. Even though this trim is slightly more expensive than the other available trims, it offers a better choice in terms of the equipment offered as well. The Essence trim is five grand costlier than the base trim. The level of safety available for the extra buck is a necessicity and hence it is worth the money.

Engine and Performance
6.9/10

The 2019 Buick Encore is offered in two engine options. Both these Buick Encore engines are different versions of the same turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder. The base engine has a slightly smaller bore and outputs less displacement figures(1364 cc vs 1399 cc), and this base engine produces 138 hp@4900 rpm and 148 lb-ft of torque @1850 rpm. The bigger engine boasts of a higher compression ratio (9.5:1 versus 10.0:1) and has fuel injection rather than port, which helps it generate 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. Both the Buick Encore engines lack the feel, although the grunt is apt for city driving. The Encore feels sluggish when all the seats are occupied and is made to run down the highways.

Both the engine options are made available with a 6-speed automatic transmission that can also be made available with the manual shifting function. Further, this subcompact SUV is offered in either a front-wheel-drive drivetrain or an optional all-wheel-drive drivetrain. This goes without saying that, the more powerful engine of the two is made available on the Sports Touring and the Essence trim.

There is no significant difference in the power outputs of all the rivals, however, the 2019 Mazda CX-3 churns out the most amount of ponies. The Chevrolet Trax is identical to the Buick Encore while the Mazda produces the highest amount of horsepower among them.

Acceleration

The acceleration on the 2019 Buick Encore is the best among the four cars with the more powerful 1.4 L turbocharged engine. The car does does 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds with the more powerful engine option. The lower displacement motor takes 8.4 seconds to reach the 0-60 mph mark from a standstill. This number might seem slow, but comparing with the competition, it is the quickest among them all.

When put in comparison against its rivals, the lower capacity version engine of the 2019 Buick Encore proves to be the fastest of the lot. It proves its mettle not only in the 0-60 mph competition but also in the Quarter mile dash. This is impressive when we look at the engine capacities of the rivals. Equipped with the lowest capacity engine of 1.4 L when compared to its rivals, that are equipped with the 1.8 and 2.0 liter engine, the Buick is still unbeatable and the quickest car among the lot. This proves the ability that the 2019 Buick Encore has.

Ride and Handling

The 2019 Buick Encore, being a crossover tecnically adds to its ability to tackle traffic and fitting into tight spots a good control over the car. Its small size makes it agile and maneuverable, and it delivers perfect power for city driving. This vehicle is peppy for sure but it isn't as sporty as you might expect it to be. There is not much roll, and the car manages to stay put in turns as well. The steering is light, and precise.

The 2019 Buick Encore's ride is smooth at a lower speeds, but it can get wallowed over the uneven landscape on higher velocities. Buick has incorporated some energetic styling prompts like a thick-rimmed steering wheel, yet the Encore is considerably more suited as an urban cruiser than a lively crossover. Probably better to keep this car limited ti city drives.

Braking

The braking system of any vehicle is a very important factor, especially when it is highly recommmened for city usage. The brake bite is enough for red light stops and city jaunts, pedal travel is small, requires less effort with a high response. You will certainly hear a weird squeal from the pads after using them repetitively. No option of an automatic emergency braking system limits the 2019 Buick Encore's appeal.Beware of the nosedive though.

The rotor sizes talk a differnt story, but they are not enough to judge a car's braking performance based on the disc size. The curb weight also plays an important factor. Comparing the rotor sizes of these vehicles in consideration tells us that the Buick as well as the Trax have the biggest front brake amoung the lot. The Encore is the heaviest among the four cars, and this eats into its braking performance.

Fuel Economy
7.7/10

The 2019 Mazda CX-3 returns even the best fuel economy among the four cars. The Honda HR-V comes next, with a combined mpg of 30 mpg. The Buick and the Chevrolet Trax come very close to each other, and the Buick is a better option in the city with its 26 mpg mileage whereas the Trax has better highway efficiency at 33 mpg.

Interior
7.5/10

The 2019 Buick Encore's interior offers great visiility and good ingress and exgress facilities. The featuers in the cabin are easy to get accustomed to, and are pretty straightforward as well. There is a lot of seat adjustability on offer, so anyone and everyone can be comfortable while driving this car. There are rich quality materials all around the cabin, and the quiet cabin places you in a calm ambience. The interior can be equipped with different materials like fabric, leatherette or genuine cowhide, and the cabin is well laid and refined.

The front seats on the Encore offer a good aomunt of comfort and are very supportive as well. The back seats have a fair measure of headroom and can fit two grown-ups without grumbling. The rear seats of this vehicle offer generous headroom and can fit two full-grown individuals without any hesitation for space. However, the rear seats do get congested when you have three individuals occupying it, and the headroom takes a hit with the inclusion of a moon roof.

Despite its small footprint, the Buick Encore's interior feels roomy because of its tall roof and a high seating position. It's less outright fun to drive than most of the rivals but there's good space inside for an average size individual, which is a squeeze in some of those competitors. The Buick Encore is tight on space, when you take a look at the Japanese rivals. However, its interior space is so alluring that there is no saying anything to it. However, even in this respect, it does not grab the first place as the Honda HR-V offers the most amount of rear space in the subcompact crossover SUV segment.

Interior Features

The Buick Encore has exquisite interiors to offer, in fact, this is what the brand is known for: offering plush interiors with top-notch materials that deliver unimaginable comfort and that build the brand image. Some of the several interior features that you will find in this vehicle are mentioned below:

  • Keyless ignition and entry

Personalized and a powerful connected ride experience by featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto compatibility, a trial version of Sirius XM satellite radio, and an optional Premium Bose 7-Speaker audio system to give you a concert-like experience will be added as standard features on the 2019 Buick Encore later on.

The Infotainment system is not very advanced, but there is a simple software at play which is hassle free and easy to use. The infotainment system is fitted with mostly the basic offerings as per industry standards, and the 2019 Buick Encore's infotainment system has the following features on offer:

  • Android Auto & Apple Car Play
  • Onboard Wi-Fi
  • 4G LTE
  • Bluetooth audio and phone
  • Voice command
  • USB input

Cargo volume

The 'U' stands for utility in SUV, and the Encore does not impress with its 19 cubic feet of storage with all the seats up. This is less than what some compact cars offer. However, fold the seats down and the car can hold a llarge amount of cargo at 48 cubic feet. The space behind the rear seats is large enough for moderate grocery loads and 7 to 8 carry-on bags.

The vehicle is best suited for family trips with small kids or for couples. You cannot haul anything in big unless you fold down the seats, as seen in the image as well, and this is a bummer. The cargo loading bay has a relatively low loading height, which can be pretty helpful.

The Mazda on the other hand has the least space at 12.4 cubic feet, and its a surprise as to what can one fit in there for family trips. The Chevrolet is similar to the Buick, with a 18.7 cubic feet of storage.

Exterior
8.3/10

Compared to its Chevy sibling, the Buick Encore sports a much taller look and at the same time manages to be a looker with its smooth lines and curves. The winged grille looks modern, and sculpted hood stays true to the classic SUV styling cues. The Encore looks tall but narrow, however it is not an eyesore. The car has tall wheel arches, with classy 18-inch alloy wheels that surely are a fashion statement. The Encore looks athletic and but does not stand out much. The dynamic outlook is to attract people of younger generations.

The utility vehicle's profoundly etched bodywork and a classy variety of brilliant emphasize bits are adequately set off by conspicuous LED-highlighted projector-pillar headlights and LED-mixed taillights. Brushed-aluminum fake back skid plates and a wide wheelbase bundle include a more aggressive silhouette to the general blend.

Being the heaviest, tallest, and widest car of the lot the 2019 Buick Encore also has the most ground clearance to its name. With the shortest wheelbase in class measuring 100.6 inches only, the reaon behind the jittery ride it provides on uneven surfaces is much clear now. The Honda HR-V has the most length and the mostwheelbase, and this helps provide a smooth and supple ride quality even on bad roads. The Chevrolet Trax is similar to the Buick in terms of dimensions, however it is around 500 pounds lighter. The Mazda CX-3 is similarly sized as the Honda HR-V, but a tad bit smaller. Apart from the dimensions and their advantages, the Buick Encore has several exterior features to offer, a brief list of the same is mentioned below:

  • LED headlights in Essence and Premium
  • Halogen headlights in all trims except Essence and Premium
  • LED DRL
  • Fog lamps in Sport Touring and above
  • 18-inch alloy wheels on all trims

Safety
9.1/10

The 2019 Buick Encore recieved the best in class safety rating of 5-stars from the NHTSA. The IIHS rated the Buick Encore with the highest rating of 'Good' in most of the crash tests, but recievd a rating of 'Acceptable' in the small frontal overlap passenger side crash test and the LATCH ease of use factors.

The Encore from Buick offers just basic standard features when it comes to safety, like airbags, stability conrtol, traction control and a rear-view camera. Unlike several other companies that offer technologically advanced features, It is a bit astonishing to learn that a reputed company such as Buick does not deliver to the expected standards of safety. The features are made available on only the higher trims, and what is offered by Buick are some pretty advanced features. The other available safety features include:

  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision alert
  • Parking assist
  • Lane departure warning

Competition
7.0/10

Buick Encore Vs Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 is young and brimming with soul. Mazda mixes the CX-3 with excellent handling and balance with an addition of a solid motor that outpaces the Encore. The CX-3 additionally has one of the most pleasant cabins among rivals.

However, the Encore has more standard and available features. Also the cargo spce is better on the Encore. According to the cost-to-feature ratio, Mazda is a clear winner. It costs a few thousand dollars less than Encore, and doesn't compromise with comfort or performance.

Buick Encore Vs Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is slightly more versatile than the Buick. Its back seat overlaps to make an extensive floor-to-roof stack floor that is ideal for transporting bicycles or other tall articles. The Honda is slighty behind in performance.

The HR-V is the ace of utility in this rivalry. The Encore can't stand in front of the Honda overall, yet it beats the HR-V in the quality of its cabin materials.

Buick Encore Vs Chevrolet Trax

Mechanically, the Chevrolet Trax and Encore are about equivalent. They share similar dimensions, power outputs since they belong to the same parent organization. The Trax offers a rundown of standard highlights like the Encore and the inside is entirely utilitarian. It takes care of business, yet it won't inspire you with the quality of its materials.

This likewise makes it less expensive than the Encore by a couple of thousand dollars, so it's a savvy decision on the off chance that you simply require essential subcompact SUV utility.

Final Verdict

The 2019 Buick Encore is among the best subcopmact SUVs that you can buy in the market today. The Buick Encore has a lot going for it to attract the numerous buyers in the younger demographic for a small upscale crossover. The car has one of the most exclusive interiors in its class and an impressive list of standard features to add. However, Its performance is not the best, though it offers a comfortable ride and composed handling. There are many reasons to like the Encore when compared with other rivals but at the same time, its rivals offer a better offering in terms of value for money. If loaded with all the optional equipment on hand, the car comes very close to the $35,000 mark, which puts it close to some of the luxury SUVs in the market, like the 2019 Audi Q3 and the 2019 BMW X1.
