About 2019 Chevrolet Trax

3.5

Overall Rating

When debuted 4 years ago, the Trax was a performer in an otherwise new and fresh era of the subcompact crossover segment.

When debuted a few years ago, the Trax was a stalwart in an otherwise new and fresh era of the subcompact crossovers. It underwent some revamps two years ago, the American SUV has been the same in spirit but it has upgraded otherwise. For the 2019 Chevrolet Trax, this custom has been retained and quite frankly, the theme is getting a bit boring and mundane now.

Powered by a small 1.4L inline-4 engine mated to 6-speed automatic transmission, the Trax has a contradicting design language; the cabin is quite spacious but due to its compact size, it falls short of actually providing passenger comfort on the same line.

Choosing the LT trim is the wisest option for it offers almost all the features and technology of the top trim but at a lesser cost. It is a sweet deal for it bridges the gap between the top and base configurations.

Unpleaseant Suprises!

Pros

Higher Gas Mileage, The Back-Up camera

Cons

The high maintenance costs and poor quality GM parts it has., The popping the transmission has made and how underpowered it is.

Higher maintenance costs than any new car my family has ever owned. Unreliable GM parts abound. Over 30 trips were made to a dealer for servicing. An onboard computer that shames any original OB2 programming by acting like it has a new programming language that is very unstable under mechanical breakdowns, and usually cause other systems to necessarily go into shutdown.

2019 Chevrolet Trax Review

Pros

  • Spacious cabin
  • Adequate cargo space
  • Comfortable seats
  • User-friendly infotainment system

Cons

  • Lacklustre powertrain performance
  • Average fuel efficiency against segment
  • Cheap interior materials

When debuted 4 years ago, the Trax was a performer in an otherwise new and fresh era of the subcompact crossover segment.

Overview

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The segment of compact crossovers isn't an easy one to win through. The segment leader Mazda CX-3, Honda's HR-V and the Toyota C-HR stack up to give the Trax a run for its money. Having said that, the Trax still does a fine job in competing and holding up. Read on to find out more.

Offered in 3 different configurations - LS LT, and Premier - the trims are further split in two different drivetrains - FWD and AWD. With a difference of $1,500 between the two drivetrain, the subcompact crossover, the Chevy Trax starts at $21,200 for the FWD.

One could choose to go in for the lower trim but along with that pick a nice package, there are several packages available that offer different features. The highest trim, Premier, costs $27,500 and is feature-rich. A 1.4L engine with a 4-cylinders mated to 6-speed automatic transmission powers the entire lineup.

We recommend

Choosing the LT trim is the wisest option for it offers almost all the features and technology of the top trim but at a lesser cost. It is a sweet deal for it bridges the gap between the top and base configurations.

Under the hood propelling the front wheels sits a turbocharged 1.4L with 4-cylinders mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Consider yourself lucky if you can drive this compact light-duty SUV like one. Like most similarly sized crossovers in this segment, sluggish and lazy gear shifts, galling noise, and uninspiring engine performance make up the SUV's frail powertrain. There's nothing much left to write about the feeble machine under the Trax.

Engine and Performance
5.3/10

Powering the 2019 Chevrolet Trax is a 1.4 litre inline 4 cylinder engine. This power unit doesn't seem to surprise its audience, with the generation of a meagre 138 hp and 148 lb-ft. The Chevrolet Trax uses a 6 speed automatic transmission that helps it shift from lower speeds to its highest. This power unit seems to be pretty dull and it might be the least equipped in the segment. Going forward we do have a comparison between this Chevy and its rivals and that is where we will get clarity regarding their engine specifications.

The most power packed engine is that of the Mazda CX-3, its 2 litre inline 4 cylinder engine is extremely competitive and efficient. It churns out as much as 148 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the Chevrolet Trax has the weakest engine in class.

Acceleration

The disappointing flat power delivery in the light-duty drives the front wheels from naught to 60 mph in 9.3s. The quarter-mile drag is leisurely completed in 16.8s. In the segment of a mix of underperforming motors across the field, the Buick Encore takes the fastest crown followed by the Mazda CX-3 while the rest come in half a second or later.

The Mazda CX-3 is the fastest as well, being equipped with the largest engine in its segment it is obvious that it would be the fastest. It reaches the 60 miles per hour mark in 8.6 seconds. Following in second place the Chevy and Honda tie for clocking it in 9.3 seconds. The Toyota C-HR proved to be the slowest of the lot with a timing of 11 seconds.

Ride and Handling

Chevrolet Trax is nimble with responsive, light and quick steering input. Body roll is controlled at a certain speed and bumps are easily absorbed. Parking it or driving around the city is quite easy for this light-duty vehicle thanks to its short steering radius and agility.Driving this machine isn't much fun, firstly, because of its dull powertrain. Secondly, the vehicle doesn't have the ability to ignite the enthusiastic, adrenaline rush such as its rivals.

Compared to other SUVs in the segment, the ride quality is sub-standard. Its handling borderlines mediocrity, while remaining predictable. At high speeds, the crossover feels unsure especially at high speeds.

Braking

An extremely vital aspect for any vehicle is that of the braking system. This brand by General Motors, the Chevy Trax has a phenomenal braking system in place. Its launch disc brakes in the front with drum brakes for the rear set of wheels, this extremely capable breaking unit proves its mettle in the tests the Chevy and its rivals have gone under. Given below is a chart that describes the same.

Chevrolet Trax has the next best set of rotors in place, 11.8 inch rotors for its front and a set of nine inch rotors for the rear wheels.

Fuel Economy
7.9/10

The Trax delivers 33 miles per gallon on the highway with a combined figure of 28 mpg it is quite an average task by the powertrain. These figures are nothing great when compared to the rest of the rivals in the competition. The segment leader, Mazda CX-3 impresses with quite an efficient powertrain while Honda's HR-V follows suit. Given below is a chart that will help us compare and understand more about the fuel efficiency in detail.

Comparing the mileage of these vehicles leads us to realise that the fastest and most powerful vehicle of the lot also proves to be the most efficient. It is a phenomenal feat for a vehicle to deliver on both the fronts, Mazda CX 3 proves its mettle as it delivers 29 miles to a gallon in city drives and 34 miles to a gallon on the highway.

Interior
6.6/10

The interiors of the Chevy accommodate 5 individuals with generous room for both the rows of seats. However, the legroom is slightly compromised on both the rows but that is what you can expect in a compact vehicle such as this one. The SUV's small design in itself is quite comfortable covered with cloth-upholstery. Headroom on the other hand is ample on both.

Aesthetically, the cabin is modest, fitted with plastic touch and feel alongside cheap materials and quality in places. Apparently, noise isolation is less of a concern for the American manufacturer. Visibility is good thanks to the adjustable seating options.

Infotainment System

Right at the center of the dash sits Chevrolet's MyLink 7" touch screen infotainment system. An intuitive system with a user-friendly interface otherwise fails to impress in its physical controls which are plastic in material and have redundant use for some functions. MyLink's touch screen looks good but delays in responsiveness make it less appealing. Fortunately, the Trax features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which comes optional even on some of the most high-end cars with premium features.

Some standard features include -

  • 6-speaker audio system
  • 2 USB ports
  • OnStar Communications with 4G connections and Wi-fi hotspot
  • 7" Infotainment System

Interior Features

Along with the mentioned features for its infotainment offering, the Chevy also provides some creature comforts. A brief list of the same is given below:

  • Mirror: Rearview, manual day/night
  • Remote Keyless Entry with panic alarm
  • Rear vision camera
  • Steering column: Tilt and telescopic

Cargo Volume

With an offering of 18.7 cubic feet with your seats upright is quite a decent task for the Trax. Surprisingly, the segment leader in all other aspects, Mazda CX-3, has the lowest of the lot in terms of cargo space, at 12.4 cubic feet. Coming to the rear seats when folded, you'll find 48.4 cubic feet available on the Chevrolet Trax, standing along the top of the segment. However, the Honda HR-V offers the best practicality along the segment in both instances.

Right in its shadow, we have the Chevrolet Trax that offers 18.7 cubic feet of space. Overall, with rear seats folded, the Honda grabs the cup with a provision of 58.8 cubic feet.

Exterior
7.5/10

Equipped with 16" steel wheels, the Trax has a compact and conservative design. Fitted with a chrome-accented dual element grille flanked by Halogen headlights, the SUV sits 6.2" above the ground and measures 100" in its total wheelbase. Weighing 2805 pounds, the crossover blends itself amongst its diverse compact rivals, weighing the least.

Not overdone but simply curved and molded with a dash of - 'this will do' - mindset, that's the underlying philosophy of this simple to understand truck-Chevrolet Trax. A rear lip spoiler rests above the window pane, while the same hard plastic design found in the front is twinned in the back.

The Chevrolet Trax is the tallest car of the lot which has a decent wheelbase, width and length. It has the best ground clearance of all the cars in consideration. The Trax is also the lightest vehicle of the lot, weighing only 2805 pounds.

Exterior Features

The external dimensions are not all that you will get on the outside of the Chevy Trax, this american beast is also equipped with a few external features. Some of the features included in the Trax LS trim are -

  • Body-color door handles
  • 16" steel wheels
  • Halogen reflector headlamps with automatic exterior lamp control

Safety
9.1/10

The Chevrolet Trax SUV is yet to be rated by the NHTSA and IIHS. Since the crossover is an unchanged iteration since the previous year, we suspect the test ratings to be likewise for the 2019 model. The compact SUV offers a scarce list of standard features found in other rivals in this segment. Some standard features included in the Trax are -

  • 10 air bags - 2 Frontal and knee for driver and front passenger
  • Seat-mounted side-impact and roof rail-mounted for front and rear outboard seating positions
  • Passenger Sensing System
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) for child safety seats
  • OnStar Safety & Security Plan with 1-month coverage, including Automatic Crash Response, Emergency Services, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, Roadside Assistance, Turn-by-Turn Navigation and more

Competition
6.0/10

Chevrolet Trax vs Mazda CX-3

Going up against the segment leader, the Chevrolet Trax is doomed here. The Mazda CX-3 is way more economical and practical than the American crossover, overall better driving dynamics with superior powertrain, better cabin quality and space alongside comfortable seats. Evidently, the CX-3 is the obvious winner here and hence is the choice of the masses .

Chevrolet Trax vs Toyota C-HR

The Chevy in consideration has better features and AWD availability, it is also more spacious and has a decent boot space. On the other hand Toyota lacks these subtle luxuries it instead focuses on enhancing its powertrain. It does deliver on that front but staying ahead in just one aspect does not make it a better choice. Choosing the Trax over the C-HR would be a wise option. Wiser option? Skip both.

Chevrolet Trax vs Honda HR-V

The Chevrolet Trax outperforms the it's stark rival, Honda HR-V in terms of driving dynamics and features available. All the other aspects of these vehicles such as the powertrain, interiors, boot space and pricing are pretty similar. Honda has an upper hand over the Chevrolet Trax with its unparalleled practicality. It is for this reason that people would go in for the Honda HR-V, leaving behind the Trax.

Final Verdict
5.0/10

No, even though there is a great boot space, good handling, decent fuel efficiency and spacious interior along with comfortable seats. Nonetheless, its powertrain is mediocre at best, and the feature list alongside safety equipment are not upto the mark. If you truly want the best out of this compact crossover, you'd have to shell a few hundred more dollars in order to get higher trims or additional packages. You could consider other rivals, they might be a safer bet if Chevrolet Trax does come under your radar.
