Overall Rating
The 2019 Genesis G70 sedan is a well rounded entry level luxury sedan offering form the luxury sub brand of Hyundai. The Genesis G70 is the brand's first attempt to build a legitimate sports sedan and serves both driving enthusiasts and luxury aficionados equally well.
The 2019 Genesis G70 sedan is one of the most engaging and fun to drive entry-level luxury sedans with a starting MSRP of $34,900 for the Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) trim and All Wheel Drive (AWD) $36,900. The Genesis G70 gets powered by a 2.0-liter Inline-4 cylinder turbocharged engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, produces 252 bhp of power and 260 lb-ft of torque and comes with both AWD and RWD drivetrains.
The optional sport package comes with a Rear Wheel drivetrain with a manual transmission, along with features like Limited Slip differential, sports custom exhaust, Brembo brake calipers, and bigger 18.0” alloy wheels. The 2019 Genesis G70 sedan is all set to take on the likes of the Jaguar XE, KIA Stinger, and Lexus IS 300.
The 252 horsepower, 2.0L inline-4 powertrain mated to the 8-speed automatic gearbox with AWD system seems like the best package for its money. The 2.0L engine is sufficiently powerful and the 8-speed automatic gearbox complements it better than the manual. The AWD is always a blessing for the extra traction it offers specially in snowy and rainy weather conditions.

The G70 belongs to a crowded segment wherein almost every manufacturer has thrown a contender into the game. The closest rival posing threat to the G70's sales is its own sister-The Kia Stinger. It also intends to take on the likes of BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, and Lexus which are the most established marquees in this segment. For this comparison, the G70 takes on the Kia Stinger, Lexus IS 300, and the Jaguar XE.
The Genesis G70 essentially comes with two engine options, two gearboxes, and rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive variants. This configuration is spread across several trim levels. For starters, the 2.0L, inline-4 mill comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. This powertrain can be had with either of the two, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive variants. You can also opt for the 2.0L engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox with either of them.
The base variant is the 2.0T Advanced, followed by the 2.0T Sport. Apart from the 2.0L engine in various configurations, there is also a more powerful option - the 3.3L, V6 engine that comes mated to the 8-speed automatic. This unit can be had with either the Rear-wheel drive or the all-wheel-drive configuration. The 3.3T is further segregated into three trim levels - Advanced, Design, and Dynamic - Dynamic being the sportiest one.

Which trim should you buy?
The 252 horsepower, 2.0L inline-4 powertrain mated to the 8-speed automatic gearbox with AWD system seems like the best package for its money. The 2.0L engine is sufficiently powerful and the 8-speed automatic gearbox complements it better than the manual. The AWD is always a blessing for the extra traction it offers specially in snowy and rainy weather conditions.
The G70 is powered by a 2.0L, inline-4 cylinder turbocharged motor producing 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The engine is really smooth and power is distributed evenly across the rev range. Put your foot down in any gear, at any rpm and the car is always ready to pick its pace. There is negligible turbo lag and for most parts, it's a powerful and refined motor delivering power linearly and smoothly across the band. If you think that the 2.0L mill is crazy, come to the upper trims and your perceptions will change. With a 3.3L, V6 powerhouse (shown below), the G70's upper trims churn out 365 hp of power and throw a massive 376 ft-lbs of force on the crank. While the former was fast, this one is just insane.
Both the engines come mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard, or you can also opt for the 6-speed manual. We believe the automatic is a better choice over the manual, as the latter has unnecessarily long throws and isn't quite as refined as the former. The clutch pedal, however, is quite good. The automatic changes gear seamlessly, and when you plant your foot down, it never hesitates to drop a gear or two to help you make that overtake.

Almost every manufacturer has a contender in this segment which makes it quite competitive. The closest competitor to the G70 is the Kia stinger as it's within the same family. Also joining the bandwagon are the Jaguar XE and the Lexus IS 300. All cars are very closely specked in this segment. However, the story might change when the mass factor weighs in.
The G70 (2.0) accelerates to 60 mph in just 6.0 seconds which is pretty fast for a luxury sports sedan. It breaches the quarter-mile mark in 14.6 seconds, which too, is pretty fast. In fact, the 60 mph sprint and the quarter-mile run are the fastest in the competition, stacking up head-to-head with the Kia Stinger, which is no surprise.
The "other" G70 (3.3T, AWD) breaches the 60 mph mark in just 4.8 seconds and further goes on to clear the quarter-mile mark in a staggering 13.3 seconds.

The Jaguar XE follows the same suit at 6.3 seconds and the Lexus IS is the slowest in the competition, hitting the 60 mph-mark in 6.9 seconds. As expected, the G70 overpowers this lot with a wide margin.
The G70 is essentially a luxury car meant to take on the likes of BMW and Mercedes. If it intends to beat any of them, it has to ride well and to our pleasure, it does. The suspension soaks up bumps and potholes quite well and the cabin remains extremely refined and comfortable. It can also take on corners fairly well. Body roll has been very well contained and the chassis is very well balanced.
There are several driving modes - comfort, sport, etc - which adjusts the suspension as required. You can also opt for the optional adaptive suspension which optimizes the dynamics of the vehicle even more. The steering is quick and precise. It weighs up adequately at higher speeds and communicates grip levels from the front wheels. At lower speeds, the steering is light which makes it easy to maneuver in the city. It's a very well-balanced car; it is sporty, yet is sumptuously comfortable.
The braking department of the G70 is taken care of by the Brembos and believe us, they are fairly capable too. The pedal feedback is numb initially, but then there is a progressive bite and the car is brought to a stop quite effectively. It holds itself well and remains stable under hard braking. The pedals communicate effectively after the initial delay and inspire confidence.

The Genesis possesses the biggest brakes in the comparison in spite of being one of the lightest cars in the comparison. Although we do not have any official figures, we believe that the G70 should perform better than the rest here. The Lexus and the Jaguar should stack up head-to-head while Kia's scorecard takes a hit.
The Genesis G70 returns a nominal mileage of 21 MPG in the city and this figure rises to 28 MPG on the highway. With a combined mileage of 23 MPG, the G70 isn't the best out of the lot here. Though its rivals hover around the same numbers, the G70, disappointingly, sits at the last.

As expected, the G70 does not fare so well in fuel economy as it does in the other departments. In fact, it is the least fuel-efficient car here returning 23 miles to the gallon combined, which is even lesser than the Kia Stinger. The Jaguar XE sits at the top of the lot here with an impressive fuel efficiency of 28 miles to the gallon combined.
The interiors of the G70 have been very tastefully designed. It really exudes luxury like you wouldn't expect from such a new brand. The layout is much like we have seen in other Hyundai or Kia cars and it looks pretty good. What's impressive is the build quality and the materials used. Almost all the places you touch are soft-touch materials. There is leather on the dashboard with contrast stitching, knurled switches, aluminum trims, all of which really up the ambiance in the cabin.
The dashboard has flowing lines and an 8-inch floating infotainment screen sits on top of the dashboard. The ergonomics are all very great with physical buttons for the necessary functions. The climate controls have a unique design and the diamond stitching on the seats and door panels feel like you are in a Bentley.

The seats in the G70 are very comfortable. They hold you really well providing good thigh and lumbar support. The diamond leather stitching looks beautiful and the seats are ventilated to be heated or cooled. At the rear, space is not all that good as the tallest passengers may find it a little cramped but otherwise, there is ample space. The rear seats are equally comfortable and overall, it's a nice cabin to spend hours in. The cabin is really refined and quiet and it does actually feel luxurious.
The infotainment system in the G70 is sure to remind you of the one found in Hyundai vehicles. The floating 8-inch touch screen unit is pretty easy to use and is also fairly intuitive. It comes with navigation as standard and also provides smartphone integration through Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The graphics are also pretty good.
There's another 7-inch digital screen in the instrument cluster which shows various vital information about the vehicle. Also, there's a heads-up display, surround-view camera, and a 15-speaker Lexicon sound system which sounds pretty darn good. The technology is not the best in the class and the Europeans still do it better, but it's pretty good and would get most things done quite conveniently.
With a cargo capacity of just 10.5 cubics. feet, the G70 is left at the last of this comparison since all other rivals overshadow the Genesis here. The 60/40 split-folding seats ease out this issue up to quite an extent. Furthermore, the one-touch boot opener is a blessing as it eases the loading/unloading factor of the vehicle.

The Genesis G70 disappoints here. It has the smallest trunk at 10.5 cubics. feet which are really small for a car in this category. Its sister car, the Kia Stinger has more than double the boot size of the G70. The Jaguar sits at the second position in this comparison right after the Stinger and the Lexus is just a tad more spacious in the trunk than the G70. Small as it may be, the G70 is still good enough to pack in some handful of luggage over a weekend trip.
Interior Features
The G70 is a beautiful car to look at. It's a fresh design although you can see traces of other cars in a lot of areas like the rear tail lamps look like that of the C-class, the front bumper looks like the one on the Kia Stinger and at the sides, the lines remind you of the Alfa Romeo Guilia. At the front, the bumper has sharp cuts and creases to make a rather complex bumper that houses the LED fog lamps. The headlamps are LED units too and a large hexagonal grille dominates the front fascia.
At the sides, two-character lines run down the length of the car and there is also a fake front fender vent to give it that Alfa Romeo Guilia look. At the rear, it's neat and tidy with the C-Class like LED tail lamps, a mild diffuser, bulging boot lid, and dual chrome exhaust tips. The entire car features beautiful bulges, cuts, and creases to carve out a very beautiful-looking car. It's certainly one of the most contemporary-looking sedans in the segment.

The G70 does not share its dimensions with the Kia Stinger, surprisingly. The Kia Stinger is the longest sedan hereafter which follows the G70. Kia is also the heaviest. The Jaguar XE is the longest sedan and the G70 and the XE share the same wheelbase.
Exterior Features of the 2019 Genesis G70
The G70 is an all-new car and neither NHTSA nor IIHS has crash-tested it yet. We do not have their ratings to present to you, but what we can tell you is that it is a safe car that is loaded with a plethora of safety measures too. It's a luxury brand and safety had to be a priority for the brand. The G70 is loaded with a lot of standard safety features such as a Forward Collision-Avoidance System and smart cruise control with stop and go feature, which continuously gauges the vehicles ahead of you and maintains a safe distance from them.
Standard safety features include:
The Jaguar XE is a pretty average car that does most things well but nothing quite exceptionally. It looks sober, has good quality interiors, performs well, handles quite well indeed, and is, after all, a Jaguar. Having said that, Genesis also does all that and then, a little more too.
The G70 has a better sense of occasion to itself with its looks, interiors, and its inherent character as a sporty luxury sedan. There's not much separating the cars in terms of performance but the Genesis still edges ahead. The G70 offers everything that the Jaguar does but in a friendlier price bracket.
The G70 and the Kia Stinger are sister cars and are based on the same platform. If the G70 intends to do anything, it intends to perform better than the Kia, and that it does. While most numbers are exactly the same between both the cars, Genesis has some tweaks to differentiate itself from the Kia.
For starters, the suspension is considerably stiffer on the Genesis to make it a better handling car. The wheelbase is much smaller to give it a nimble character. The interiors of the G70 are far more luxurious than the Kia and while both cars look amazing, the Genesis still manages to stay slightly ahead. While the Stinger is quite sporty, the Genesis is even sportier. The Kia, however, asks for less money than the former. Having said that, the choice narrows down to your personal preference. We think paying a little more for a sportier and more luxurious car is worth it.
The Lexus IS 300 is quite a different car from the G70. While it has been made sportier than before, it's still essentially an entry-level luxury car. The G70 is sportier than the IS 300 and the difference shows quite well. In terms of looks, Genesis simply looks outstanding because it's fresh and contemporary. The Lexus is also attractive on the outside but we think that the G70's fresh design language is a treat to the eyes.
The G70 is faster, has more power, and performance-optimized mechanical hardware. Inside the cabin, both cars feel sumptuously appointed and feel every bit like a luxury car. In the end, the G70's better package and its cheaper price nudge it ahead of the Lexus. The Genesis G70 is an extremely well-rounded car that checks all the right boxes for its utility. It's gorgeous to look at, has well-appointed interiors, and performs quite well. It's adequately sporty and is still very comfortable and fulfills that luxury quotient quite well. It's quite praiseworthy that a new brand like Genesis comes out with such a car in just three years' time and further takes on such a competitive segment so well. What's best about this car is the price at which it is being offered which makes it a great value for money.
The 2019 Genesis G70 is a great all round package and provides the ideal value for buck when it comes to a sports luxury sedan, with just the ideal mix of sportiness, comfort and outright opulence, it is almost a bargain at an MSRP of $34,900. Being the proud sub-brand of the South Korean automobile giants Hyundai the G70 sedan unfortunately shares a lot of interior parts and hardware parts with its lesser expensive Hyundai siblings is one of the very few demerits of the vehicle. The powerful 2.0-liter Inline-4 cylinder turbocharged engine produces a really impressive 252 bhp of power and 260 lb-ft of torque, along with the race package which includes a RWD drivetrain and a manual transmission, to spice things up for the enthusiasts and create a niche market of itself. Overall the 2019 Genesis G70 is a great all-round package and there is very little that you can get wrong by acquiring one of these.
