About 2019 Kia Forte

3.9

Overall Rating

The four-cylinder engine is smooth but not awe inspiring. You get stellar fuel-economy with the intuitive infotainment system. A slew of active-safety features is offered, including standard automated emergency braking and optional adaptive cruise control.

The 2019 Kia Forte is a highly popular compact sedan and has been in production since 2008. Manufactured by Kia Motors of South Korea, it has been successfully running in the market for more than a decade now.

The Forte offers a handsome list of features right from its base trim and carries a starting price of $17,790. In the segment, the sedan faces stiff competition from some well-established competitors such as the Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta, and the Hyundai Elantra.

The LXS trim of the 2019 Kia Forte would be the most value-for-money option to go for. It offers a whole lot of features for the price and gets some premium touches such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel along with soft-touch dashboard and door panels at a sub-20k price point. If your requirements are less you can opt for the base FE trim.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2019 Kia Forte trim levels start from the base FE trim and have a total of four trims on offer. The FE trim is quite well-equipped with a long list of features including automatic headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents, an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto along with a four-speaker audio system with USB, among other features. The interesting IVT transmission is offered on all the models as standard apart from the base trim.

The price of the 2019 Kia Forte starts at $17,790, which is one of the lowest base prices in this affordable class and reaches up to $22,000 with its top-end trim while remaining well within the affordable bracket. Kia covers the Forte with a five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. That's among the best coverage you can get from any automaker.

Which trim should you buy?

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

All of the 2019 Forte models come with a 2.0- liter four-cylinder engine which produces 147 horsepower and 132-pound feet of torque. The base variant comes with a six-speed manual transmission while a CVT is optional. All the upper trim levels come with the CVT as standard.

Known by the name "Intelligent Variable Transmission" (IVT), this is Kia's first attempt at a new type of CVT and developed by in-house Kia for a production car. This gearbox uses a chain-type belt instead of a push belt to reduce the rubber-band effect. Kia added more adhesive and thicker glass for the front side windows to curb noise, vibration, and harshness. The shifts are seamless and power is evenly distributed over the whole rev range.

The Nissan Sentra is the most underpowered sedan on the list with only 130 horsepower and 128lb-ft of torque on tap. Apart from that, both the Volkswagen Jetta and the Hyundai Elantra have similar power output to the Kia Forte but the Jetta rules in terms of torque output resulting in a zippy performance.

Acceleration

The Kia Forte's compact 2.0L motor will give you a pleasant surprise with its strong power delivery courtesy of the well-engineered IVT transmission. The 6-speed manual transmission on the base trim is also an easy-shifting one, allowing to utilize all the horsepower efficiently, and hits 60 mph in just 9.5 seconds. The Volkswagen Jetta is the quickest one here to cover the 0-60mph mark owing to its superior torque output but it fades away quickly even before the sedan is able to hit the quarter-mile mark. The Kia Forte is the quickest one to complete the quarter-mile distance only being marginally better than the Elantra.

Ride and Handling

Affordable compact sedans are not supposed to offer a very comfortable ride yet nowadays the vehicles are breaking those concepts and have brought a significant change in the ride quality one might expect from an affordable sedan. The ride quality provided by the MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam in the rear are firm but comfortable as the speed builds up, and the car feels stable at highway speeds, yet willing to change directions when the road starts to bend. The electric-assist steering communicates well what the front tires are doing, and the CVT does a good job of mimicking a traditional 6-speed automatic. In fact, most people would be hard-pressed to identify the Forte's transmission as a CVT, thanks in part to what Kia calls "adaptive style shift logic." There are three electronic drive modes: Normal, Smart, and Sport. In Smart, the new Forte switches between Normal and Sport, depending on how the car is being driven.

In short, the new Kia Forte is a nimble compact sedan, and its well-tuned steering, gas, and brake inputs make for a pleasant driving experience.

Braking

The 2019 Forte's brakes are firm with short pedal travel. They are easy to modulate in stop-and-go traffic and also on tight curves. The 125 -foot stopping distance from 60 to standstill is above average. They stay consistent and aspire confidence while sudden stops.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The Kia Forte's engine is an Atkinson cycle unit, which results in optimizing fuel economy without compromising on performance. The Forte, fitted with the 6-speed manual transmission, delivers EPA fuel economy of 27 mpg/city, 35 mpg/highway, and 30 mpg/combined. If you opt for a Forte FE with the new continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), those numbers increase to 31/41/35, respectively. The sedan breaches the 40mpg mark on the highway, a mileage figure which is quite impressive.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2019 Kia Forte interior will remind you of the Optima from some angles, or, in other words, it is quite handsome and feature-rich. The minimalist design, with a wide horizontal theme and beautifully contoured dash, can be compared with an entry-level Audi. Soft-touch materials on the front door panels and armrests while leather-textured black plastic decorates the dashboard in the upper trim levels.

The front seats, which provide ample comfort throughout the day are well suited for taller drivers. Likewise, the split-folding rear seats are pretty decent in terms of legroom and headroom. The middle armrest is around an inch higher and longer than the previous variant, which improves it much for, well, lavishly resting your arm. Forte's outward visibility is excellent due to the well-designed A & C pillars.

The Nissan Sentra offers the most spacious front seats among the rivals on the list although by a slight margin. All the competitors are neck-to-neck and almost similar in terms of interior dimensions. But the Volkswagen Jetta has the best-built cabin among all but has a rather bland design. The Hyundai Elantra sports the most stylish cabin here but there are some annoying hard plastic surfaces inside.

Exterior
7.0/10

Kia has made a name for itself by making some of the most stylish vehicles in all the segments it has its presence in. Although the 2019 Kia Forte is far from being the Stinger's twin, the former adopts some of the most prominent design cues from the Stinger sedan, such as the long hood, the fastback profile, and swept-back headlights along with the aggressive front fascia.

With the refresh in 2019, the sedan gets a more appealing exterior, with sharper lines and the prominent tiger grille upfront. Taller and wider than the previous generation, the Forte has a more imposing presence than ever before. At the back, the taillights feature a full-length LED strip, which keeps the design relevant for 2019.

The Forte is a few inches shorter in length than most of their competitors but otherwise measures up very close to the rest of the class. As with several competitors, a small footprint helps the Forte quite maneuverable in tight urban spaces, making it easy to get in and out of parking lots easily. The Volkswagen Jetta is the longest sedan here but it doesn't reflect anything on the interior though. The Hyundai Elantra is also as compact as the Kia Forte making it more sensible than the Jetta snd the Sentra.

2019 Kia Forte vs Nissan Sentra

The Nissan Sentra and the Forte are quite praiseworthy for being amazing daily drivers. The Kia Forte is a better value product because of the lower starting price tag and lots of interior features along with a host of standard safety features. The Sentra has the handling like a boat when taken around the corners and doesn't induce confidence at all but has a compliant ride quality that triumphs over the Forte. Choosing between these two may just come down to whether you want more amenities at a cheaper price with the Forte or better overall ride quality with the Sentra.

2019 Kia Forte vs Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra has one of the lower base prices in the segment, but its void of standard safety features. Both cars offer decent engines with almost the same power output and performance levels. The Elantra, however, has some cheaper quality interior materials, which makes the Forte a better option. The Hyundai Elantra is a good car but it does not stack up well against the Forte.

2019 Kia Forte vs Volkswagen Jetta

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is a brilliant sedan and has the best build quality in the segment. But the car suffers from sub-par interior design giving the Forte an edge over it. However, the sedan has an excellent torque rating making it quite a punchy performer within the urban limits. You will get more of everything, such as cargo space and rear-seat room as well. The Kia Forte is still a better alternative as it offers a stylish interior and an appealing design that also counts nowadays while buying a car. In terms of overall performance, the Kia Forte is a sure winner.

Final Verdict

The 2019 Forte may not be athletic as the Stinger but it does a lot of things right at a lucrative price point. It falls on the shopping list of nearly every compact car buyer. The sedan is compact yet spacious, comfortable, and well equipped right from its base trim level. With extensive use of upmarket materials and a long list of standard features, this sedan proves to be a compelling choice over its rivals. The ride quality may not be aspiring like the Sentra or the Jetta but its nimble handling is worth giving a shot. The SX model offers a sportier ride, and as the only model with a manual gearbox, it's the enthusiasts' pick.
