Overall Rating
Fresh introduction to the US market in the 2018, the Kia Stinger is a premium compact sedan fusing performance with luxury. The bosses back at the Korean's HQ have tried to give the top guns such as Mercedes, Audi and BMW a run for their money by undercutting them in price by mimicking their attributes.
Amidst the growing wave of SUVs and Crossovers around the world, Kia stunned the automotive industry in 2018 by releasing the highly-anticipated Kia Stinger. Trying to cater to buyers stranded between the regular and premium makes, the Stinger offered everything in just the right composition. Launched recently and still fresh in its age, the smoking-hot sports sedan has earned much acclaim for itself and thankfully, not much has changed with the 2019 Kia Stinger. The 2019 model year Stinger features a 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 engine, capable of churning out a whopping 255 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.
If you're looking for performance without compromising much on features, we suggest going for one of the GT Trims. Depending on what level of performance you're looking for, the GT, GT1 or GT2 trims certainly manage to impress with the 3.3L Twin-Turbo V6 engine. There's also a wide range of features on offer. All the way from Brembo Brakes, to Ventilated Seats and Head-Up Display, the GT trims have an exceptional balance of performance and comfort to offer.

The 2019 Kia Stinger retains its 5 trims from the previous iteration. These 5 trims are split in 2 configurations - RWD and AWD, an extra $2,200 cost difference between the two drivetrains. Starting at $32,900 for the RWD base Stinger, the price goes up to $49,990 for the GT2 trim. The base trims feature a modest 2.0L powertrain but the GT configurations and up include a more powerful 3.3L V6 powertrain. Thankfully, Kia's base Stinger offers plenty of features at this price and it also includes an array of impressive safety features.
The Korean sedan also provides a stunning powertrain warranty coverage of 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Powering the rear wheels of the sedan is a 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 engine, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Spurting out 255 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, the sedan offers a fairly potent powertrain. However, one look at its V6 GT trims and you'd realize how underpowered the base configuration is.
Under the Kia Stinger's base trim, the powertrain is smooth and responsive with great power delivery no doubt, but lacks that extra-oomph factor. You could push it with all your might But the Stinger would not behave like an untamed beast. With Smart, Eco, Comfortable, and Sport comprising the different driving modes, the sedan tries to mix and match, firm up its ride and powertrain but miss out on actually delivering the latter as compared to its rivals.

As for the Korean comfort sedan's competition, the Mercedes-Benz comes with higher torque output, while the Infiniti just feels underpowered by a small margin. The Alfa Romeo Giulia has a more robust powertrain under its hood, besting the entire field. As for the overall composition, the base 2019 Kia Stinger GT gets the job done very comfortably, it's no surprise that the Stinger GT adds a lot of liveliness and energy into the foray.
One of the primary aspects for which the Kia Stinger was born was to offer optimum performance of which quick acceleration is always an essential part. Speaking of the same, the 2019 Kia Stinger performed as expected in the acceleration tests.
The 2019 Kia Stinger launches from a standstill to 60 miles an hour in 6 seconds, while managing a swift quarter-mile run in an impressive 14.6s. However, that is the case with its 2.0L turbo four-pot. With the fiery 365 hp V6, the Stinger GT gets the 0 tp 60 job done in just 4.6 seconds.

Though the base Stinger model may not be as quick as its GT sibling, it still comes out strong for its size, class, and price. However, when pitched against rivals in its hot segment, the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Mercedes C300 happen to be the quickest among the lot here, with 0-60 times of just 5.5 seconds.
Comfortable and poised, the rear-wheel driven Stinger has enough grip, responsive steering and adequate body roll limitation. The chassis behaves quite stable even at high speeds with nimble handling around corners. Driving over bumps, the suspension on the 3700-pound heavy sedan soaks up bumps with ease.
Different driving modes characterize the drivability of the Kia Stinger; also provided is a traction control switch, which makes sure the sedan does not suddenly alter its personality to a driver on track. Driving on Comfort is composed and pleasant, but tweak up to Sport mode, the steering and chassis stiffens up, getting you a tad rough and jittery drive, but it's indolence to be a sports sedan gets the better of it.
The 12" brakes on the Korean sedan are modulated, feel capable and firm. Halting to a standstill from 70mph is another matter entirely; it takes a below-average distance of around 185 feet to completely decelerate.
Unlike the Kia, the Mercedes takes a better 153 feet while the Italian beauty, the Giulia, stops under 124 feet albeit from 60 mph, which is still a decent distance.

Similar to its acceleration test sheet, the Stinger performs well in the braking section too but is again not the best in the business here. Interestingly though, things are as competitive among the rivals here as it gets. While the complete braking data for the Infiniti Q50 is not available yet, among the competitors, the Mercedes C300 happens to be marginally better in the braking tests compared to the Stinger. Thanks to the Merc’s 123 feet stopping distance from 60-0 mph.
Where the base 2019 Kia Stinger strikes a chord with its packaging, the equation doesn’t transverse down the streets as it should have been. Guzzling fuel by the South Korean's turbocharged 2.0L engine is seemingly high, as the sedan returns 22 miles per gallon in the city with a combined 25 miles per gallon filled. While Japanese and Korean vehicles are perceived as the benchmark of fuel efficiency, the 2019 Kia Stinger stands as a bit of an anomaly.

Yes, for its class and size, the Stinger could have surely done better with its efficiency. What further humiliates the Korean sedan is the fact that the Italian Alfa Romeo Giulia offers better economy than the Stinger despite a more powerful engine. We really hope that Kia updates the Stinger’s aerodynamics, weight distribution along with some refinement to the transmission as well.
On the inside, the 2019 Kia Stinger is a mixed bag of several elements put together tightly. First of all, the cabin feels modern and sporty and has a nice soft-touch material on the upper dash. However, there is no dearth of cheap plastic around the cabin as well. Nevertheless, with a capacity to seat 5 passengers, the Kia Stinger's interior is roomy and spacious. The dashboard has a clean and sporty vibe, with a top-mounted infotainment screen and turbine-like air vents.Â
Speaking of comfort, you sit at a comfortable position with good front visibility and the steering wheel feels good to hold as well. Nice bolstering and lumbar support for comfortable long rides. The seats are wide and thick alongside Commodious legroom and headspace is found in the front while tall passengers will meet the roof in the back due to the sloping roofline due to which visibility is also hampered. Helping the poor visibility is the thick pillar placement in the back.

Overall, the cabin layout and its quality in the Kia Stinger may not be as flamboyant and upscale as its Mercedes-Benz counterpart or even something like an Audi A4, but it does its job pretty well. The Stinger does offer you comfortable leather seats with heating and 8-way power-adjustability for the driver and 6-way manual adjustments for the front passenger. Even in terms of creature comforts, the base Stinger gets you covered with dual-zone front climate control. leather steering, cruise control, rear-view camera, and keyless ignition.Â
Climbing up the trim-ladder further adds all the cushy amenities like adaptive cruise control, premium leather upholstery, 8-way power passenger seat, and ventilation for the front row seats. Combine them all and the Stinger does pack a nicely sprinkled feature tray. Even in terms of interior room, the Stinger offers ample headroom and legroom at both the rows for its class, despite its curvy roofline.Â
The handsome interior of the base trim of the Stinger includes -
The base variant of the 2019 Kia Stinger comes with a basic but decent infotainment system, with Kia's UVO 7" touch screen system. The infotainment system is intuitive, user friendly and comes with standard Android Auto and Apple Carplay, a feature many high-end cars list as optional. However, moving up the trim order, you will be greeted by an 8.0-inch screen.Â
The screen is not the sharpest but its clean interface and delightful responses make it very easy to use. Audiophiles get to sink in a 6 or 9-speaker audio system in the lower models while the higher models enjoy a 15-speaker premium audio system. Apart from these, the Stinger also gets plenty of other tech and connectivity features. Some of them are listed below:
Talk about cargo and practicality, and that's where the 2019 Kia Stinger really shines among its rivals. Thanks to its hatchback-style rear profile which allows it to open up a massive cargo area. Needless to say, with a crossover like 23.3 cubic feet of standard cargo area, the Stinger is the most versatile thing in its class. If needed, you can also fold down the rear seats for even more generous luggage space.

With an enormous trunk capacity to load 23.3 cubic feet of cargo, the Stinger impresses and leads the segment. Amongst its competition, the closest rival being the Jaguar XE followed by the Q50 and Giulia, manages only 16 and 13 cubic feet respectively. A conventional sedan styling is what certainly hits the practicality quotient of the other three rivals here in comparison to the Stinger.Â
Sat low with long hood and compact rear, Kia's manufacturers have tried to design the Stinger match or even better the elegance as seen on the top guns like BMW and Mercedes - one where they almost got it right, but have gone a bit too awry in trying to mimic a sports sedan design.Rolling on 18" alloy wheels, the sedan spans 190" long with a 114" wheelbase. Faux air vents sit on the hood giving a rather bold look, with the famous prominent chrome-accented Kia front grille. The Korean sedan's insignia sits overhead the grilles, flanked by Projector beam headlights.
Its fenders bulge appropriately with air intakes placed right alongside it by the side skirts. Hard character lines draw across the profile, sweeping roofline keeping in mind interior headroom slope downwards completing the side meeting the rear taillights. At the rear, above the trunk faintly protrudes a spoiler for a bit of downforce. Stylish LED tail lights stare beyond and quad-twin-tail pipes sit on either side.

Wrap it all and the 2019 Kia Stinger is undoubtedly the best looking thing in its class. It has the flash and seductive styling while its long wheelbase does help it with an unmatched premium presence. Not to forget though that the Stinger has the longest wheelbase and length in its segment here. While the other rivals in the lot here are more leaned towards their “classic sedan” appearance, the Stinger fires things up with its sophisticated and premium style along with a very strong flavor of sportiness into its character.
Exterior Features
Some of the exterior features on the sedan include -
Along with its sporty overall package, the Kia Stinger offers a host of safety features that ensures your sedan manages to keep the people inside as safe as possible. With respect to its other siblings, Kia has gained a strong repute with its advanced safety tech and very good crash test ratings. While the 2019 Kia Stinger is yet to be rated by the NHTSA, the IIHS honoured it with a “Top Safety Pick+” rating. Some of its highlighted safety features include:
Priced at almost 10 grands apart, the Kia Stinger is built upon a comfortable chassis with decent power delivery and is better at practicality. What the Korean doesn't do as good as the Mercedes C300 is luxurious interior assembled with quality material, 4-matic driven solid performance and sporty driving dynamics. While safety features are found in abundance on both the sedans, the South Korea betters the German in its exceptional warranty coverage.
For the price difference, the Stinger GT which starts at $40,550 looks like the best bet if you are considering the competition between this German and the Kia.
Amongst these rivals, the Infiniti Q50 would appeal more to a buyer in terms of its familiarity as a brand. While the Kia Stinger is a fairly new sedan to the market, it has decent performance, great practicality and interior, abundance of safety features, and comfortable ride.
The Infiniti is less of a driver's car as compared to the Stinger. Our suggestion is biased towards the Stinger for it does pretty much what the Infiniti does and goes a bit extra mile in doing so.
No doubt, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is an overall better sedan in terms of performance and driving dynamics as compared to the Kia Stinger. While practicality and cramped interior takes a hit on the Giulia, the Stinger comes open arms with it.
Under this rivalry, you should consider the GT series of the Kia which is a tad pricey than the Giulia, but is a more refined sport sedan than the base Stinger.
Newly introduced in 2018, the Kia Stinger is slowly catching up with the enthusiasts but not with the base model, oh not at all. The base powertrain and its driving dynamics is less sporty than its intention while its practicality is unseen in this segment. The large sedan has what it takes, but only in its GT trims. While the base model isn't any shoddy car, it is infact a well-made sedan, but if you're competing with the rivals as above, you should come prepared - something the base model tries to yet falls short in some areas. Conclusion - choose the competitors or the GT trims over the base model.
