There are three trim levels that the 2019 Discovery is offered in named SE, HSE and HSE Luxury. The HSE and HSE Luxury trims are offered with a powerful engine. Some options are unique to the SE: The Convenience package adds proximity entry, a hands-free liftgate and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The SE Vision Assist package includes foglights and xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights. Twelve-way power-adjustable front seats and navigation are available as stand-alone options.

The HSE comes with the contents of the Convenience and SE Vision packages and adds a fixed panoramic roof, front parking sensors, full leather upholstery, and 12-way power front seats with memory functions.

The base engine is a supercharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder that makes 340 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. A eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. An optional 3.0Litre diesel engine that produces a healthy 245 horses is available as an option for the folks that seek the thrill.

Toyota dazzles in terms of power delivery and wins the crown while being high up in price. Other options, majorly the German big-three, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes offer lower power figures. The Discovery manages to fend for itself securing the fourth spot on the list.

Acceleration

The new engines allow Discovery to be competitive and hold its name among the rivals. The acceleration is decent for an SUV of this size. However, the Audi Q5 is a bit quicker in this part. But, it offers modestly good performance.

On paper with rivals, the Discovery offers the slowest 0-60 mph timings, however, some private testers have gotten a time of 6.3 seconds for a 0 to 60 run in the Discovery. The Audi Q7 is the only slightly faster-accelerating vehicle, while it’s the Ford Expedition that shines. 

Ride and Handling

Being a Land Rover, the Discovery Sport doesn’t have any issue on poor pavements. The terrain response system can be optimized with four different settings to receive the best response out of the car. The on-road performance is smooth, and it lets you enjoy every moment while on the drive. One may find that the steering is not very precise and lacks feedback. We believe that the carmaker would look into this matter in the next update.

Braking

The braking system on the Discovery Sport consists of a 114.3-inch rotor in the front and a 13.8-inch rotor in the rear.

Weighing at 3854 lbs, this car not the heaviest in the segment, while the Audi Q5 weights 4057 lbs. The brakes are easy to handle and manage to stop the car at 123 feet from 60 mph.

Now the heaviest in the lot is the Toyota followed by the Ford Expedition. However, despite its weight, the Chevy Tahoe impresses by putting up better braking numbers on the board when compared to the Discovery.

Big engine, massive proportions, and bigger than life dynamics, fuel efficiency is on the bottom of priority for the Discovery. Nevertheless, it returns a fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg combined. 

The rivals, on the other hand, offer similar stats except for the Toyota Land Cruiser that turns out to be a thirsty SUV. Volvo delivers the highest fuel efficiency numbers among the competition, but the Audi has a bigger fuel tank and delivers better range.

In the Discovery, headroom and legroom available for the occupants is simply amazing. The 2019 Discovery never hides its tall boy stance.

The seats are comfy and one of the best across the segment. For a prospective buyer, the seats equipped with leather surfaces, memory option, heating, and ventilation, can impress them anyways.

Infotainment

The standard InControl infotainment system isn't a rocket science to use, as its menu layout is user-friendly and the touch screen uses gestures that many smartphones are already familiar with.

Reaching the screen might be a hard task for some as it is placed a bit farther, though, and it can occasionally become less responsive on selection. Other tech upgrades include a navigation system, a 17-speaker Meridian surround-sound system, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. 

Cargo Capacity

The Discovery is an excellent vehicle when it comes to cargo space. With a cargo area measuring 43.5 cubic feet with the second-row seats in place and 88.3 cubic feet with all rear seats folded it is one of the largest cargo volume offered in the class.

The Discovery SUV is a big SUV with a curb weight of 4751 lbs. With its segment biggest width of 81.6 inches and height of 73 inches, the Discovery never tries to hide away from its large size image.

The big five-spoke wheels add extra magnification to the overall character of the SUV. The blackened exterior enhances the exterior look throughout the body. 

In comparison to the rivals, dimensionally the Audi is bigger than the Discovery SUV. The Land Cruiser comes in heavy with the highest weight in the competition.

Land Rover Discovery VS Audi Q7

The Audi Q5 offers more space and interior amenities than the Land Rover Discovery Sport. It also offers better on-road driving dynamics with an impressive list of technology features.

The Audi Q5 holds a good reliability score when compared to the Discovery Sport. But, if you are seeking more compartment space for five passengers then you must opt for the Discovery Sport.

Land Rover Discovery VS Volvo XC90

The inline-4 cylinder in the Volvo XC90 has enough power but sometimes seems to fall short. Comparing the interiors, the Volvo does seem to hit a spot that the Rover fails to.

The Land Rover XC90 is a good choice, but the Rover will give you a personality that the XC90 can’t.

Combining timeless British luxury and off-roading attitude, the 2019 Land Rover Discovery is the best SUV in its class. The Land Rover Discovery Sport is quite affordable compared to most of the luxury SUVs in the segment like the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.
