About 2019 Mclaren 720s

3.8

Overall Rating

The McLaren 720 S Coupe is powered by 4.0 liter turbocharged V6 powertrain which puts out 710 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque. Engine is mated to 7 speed SSG transmission. Built on the latest MonoCage II carbon fiber chassis and featuring McLaren's second generation hydraulic suspension, the 720S features state of the art technology

McLaren has made a name for itself with its rich racing history and an awesome portfolio of high-performance cars such as the McLaren MP4-12C and the McLaren Senna. The cabin of the 720s combines authentic British craftsmanship with fine Alcantara leather, carbon-fiber accents, body panels, contrast stitching, and amazing fit and finish levels to finish it off.

The Mclaren 720s marks the second generation of Super Series cars from the brand. The 2018 720 S with an abundance of carbon fiber, challenges Italian powerhouses such as the Ferrari 812 Superfast, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, and the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera. Let's find out more about that in the review below.

Engine and Performance
9.5/10

Codenamed as M840T, at the heart of this speedster is a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 power plant that puts out a beefy 720 horsepower @7250 rpm and 568 lb-ft of torque@ 5500 rpm. There is a significant increase in power from the previous iteration named 650 S which resulted from an increase in displacement from 3.8 liters to 4.0 liters. It is exactly a 70-horsepower and 68-pound-foot increase over the 650S and a 44-horsepower and 53-pound-foot more than the 675 LT. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a seven-speed DCT unit.

The dual-clutch transmission is equipped with paddle shifters for ultimate control while driving and 40 percent of the engine components are newly developed for a better and optimized power delivery and consistent performance. The shifts are noticeably quicker and the gearbox features "Inertia push" which helps in instantaneous acceleration by activating the clutch for the next gear. Like other McLaren vehicles, the motor has a melodious sound and the exhaust note is something you can listen to all day long without feeling bored even a bit.

At this price point, horsepower does matter a lot, what does matter more is how to transfer all the power to the wheels effectively. Every other rival has bigger engines but the McLaren 720 S matches them in every aspect be it acceleration or top speed owing to its superior engineering and extensive use of carbon fiber in the base construction.

How fast is the 2019 Mclaren 720S?

According to Mclaren, the 710 hp output from this V8 is good for taking you from 0 to 60 in just 2.8 seconds. It is nearly as quick as the fabulous P1. Its lighter curb weight and state-of-the-art chassis help this achieve this mark. The McLaren 720 S set a new lap record at the Nurburgring and covers the quarter-mile distance under 10 seconds which is in supercar territory.

The under 10-second quarter-mile time puts the McLaren 720s, the Ferrari 812 Superfast, and the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ almost a second ahead of the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera. In a straight line, the Mclaren 720 S keeps on pulling, giving its rivals with big V12 motors a run for their money.

Ride and Handling of the Mclaren 720S

The F1-derived powertrain in the 2018 Mclaren 720 S with electronically actuated twin-scroll turbochargers provides a strong surge of power when asked for along with track-oriented handling. The carbon mono cage chassis is super light which is inspired by the P1, and also helps in extensive weight reduction. The Mclaren 720s delivers an impressive ride quality for a high-performance car and uses electro-hydraulic steering which works astonishingly well with superior precision.

McLaren is a true winner in the chassis game which at par or at times, better than any Ferrari and Lamborghini cars. The 720s use a double-wishbone suspension setup in the front and coil overs in the front, there is also a rear Z-bar heave spring to accommodate the massive downforce. It also uses the company's Proactive Chassis Control which connects the left and right damper with hydraulic hoses and accumulators to minimize body roll on corners.

The coupe features three drive modes which are Comfort, Sport, and Track. The comfort mode offers a compliant ride but, flick the switch to Track or Sports mode and the 720s becomes a different car altogether. In the Comfort mode the flat side of the instrument cluster faces you but switching to track mode it turns 90 degrees and you will only see important things which are rev counter and gear position.

Braking performance of the Mclaren 720S

The Mclaren 720s is equipped with huge carbon-ceramic brakes with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers. The brakes are finished in gloss black with silver McLaren text as standard. They are enough to stop you in an emergency situation either on the road and track. The brake steer applies a braking force to the inside wheels for agility.

The brake pedal feels firm at the beginning but eases up while you start driving. The tires offer excellent grip over most of the surfaces but low-traction tarmacs aren't quite friendly with the car. The integrated spoiler also tips up and works as an air brake.

The McLaren 720s is quite easier to handle around the tracks as well as on normal roads, than its rivals because of its lower curb weight. The Lamborghini Aventador has the best braking performance among the rivals on the list.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

High-performance cars are not meant for fuel efficiency. Surprisingly the McLaren 720s doesn't guzzle gas like a track monster and is able to return 29 mpg on the highway which is decent considering the performance it has on tap. It will not be a cheaper car to drive but earning 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg combined makes the best of both worlds.

The McLaren 720s wins the fuel economy war followed by the Aston Martin Superleggera. The Ferrari 812 Superfast doesn't deliver pretty good numbers owing to the huge powertrain it comes with along with the Aventador SVJ as well.

Interior
8.0/10

The interior of the 720s is an ode to carbon fiber which also helps in reducing the overall curb weight of the coupe. The elegant interior design features the finest hand-stitched leather, satin-chrome highlights, and a race-bred center console. The interior follows McLaren's design philosophy of "Everything for a reason" and every curve has its purpose. The portrait-styled infotainment screen is focused towards the driver with transmission control stacked over each other. Getting in and out of the car will be pretty easy with the dihedral doors as compared to other McLarens.

The seat cushions are firm with lumbar adjustment, and they provide great levels of support during spirited driving and track sessions. Although supportive, they are not meant for long rides as non-perforated seats don't breathe well. Seats can accommodate a wide variety of individuals owing to the steering tilt and telescoping adjustment.

When it comes to craftsmanship, the Aston Martin, the Ferrari 812 Superfast, and the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ offer nothing but the best. The 812 superfast has a more classic configuration while the Aventador's cockpit is made like a jetfighter with a slanting center console and aggressively styled dashboard. The interior of the Superleggera is as traditional as an Aston Martin can get with a thick transmission tunnel but with two more seats in the rear which none of the rivals have. None of them feels as advanced and fresh as McLaren's "organic" design.

Interior Features

  • Dual-zone climate control & air conditioning
  • The heating element on the rear window
  • Manual adjust sports seats (power height adjust on driver's side (embossed speed mark on headrest)
  • Manual adjust steering column (reach and rake)
  • Front luggage compartment accessible under the hood
  • Machined from solid interior switches
  • Electrochromic dimming rear view interior mirror

Infotainment System in the Mclaren 720S

A seven-inch touchscreen offers intuitive control over the McLaren IRIS infotainment system. The system is nothing extraordinary and offers the basics along with a fluid interface.

Standard specification includes:

  • MIS (McLaren Infotainment System) 8" high-resolution touch screen monitor
  • On-board memory
  • McLaren 4-speaker audio system
  • Audio media player
  • AM/FM & DAB radio
  • Bluetooth telephony
  • USB connectivity x2
  • AUX input
  • Voice control for infotainment

Cargo Capacity of the Mclaren 720S

The 720s' front trunk or "frunk" is a useful one and there's a shelf for soft bags and coats behind the seats, so you could easily find room for a long weekend's baggage for two.

In terms of cargo space, it seems that McLaren has pulled all the space it could out of thin air as compared with the rivals on the list. The Aventador SVJ takes the bottom position in terms of overall cargo capacity.

Exterior
9.0/10

Highly inspired from the 650s, the 720s' exterior fuses the thrill of a supercar with its stunning exterior design and optimum aerodynamic efficiency. Beautiful shrink-wrapped aluminum metal panels and teardrop-shaped cockpit makes up for the lowest drag resistance. The low stance with contoured nose and enlarged air takes with LED headlights shaped like McLaren's speed mark depicts dynamism. McLaren's signature dihedral doors swing open to give you an effortless entry into the cabin. The "Double-Skin '' doors channel air into the radiator situated in the rear fender.

Starting from the front fender there is a slot at the edge of the door to clear the turbulence coming from the front wheel. The teardrop shape ends into a pair of flying buttresses that link the flowing roof for an incredibly sporty look. A channel of neatly designed air ducts on the rear fenders helps to cool the engine which is visible under the lightweight mesh. Shaped like the Mclaren's speed mark slimline light blade LED taillights to emphasize the stretch of the mesh grille. Ditching the trapezoidal exhaust the 720 S features round tailpipes on either side of the McLaren logo. At last, there is a large wing that neatly integrates into the deck lid and lifts up to create downforce. The high-performance rear diffuser is definitely inspired by the track cars.

The classic Ferrari 812 Superfast has all that it needs to look like artwork and it will presumably age pleasantly, however, park it close to the McLaren 720s and it will look somewhat dull. The Aventador SVJ is very aggressive but the dramatic lines in the 720s look more elegant. The Aston Martin is another British classic but doesn't look as dashing as the 720s.

Competition

2019 McLaren 720s vs Ferrari 812 Superfast

The Ferrari 812 Superfast drives like a dream, almost like it is on a mission to kill you. On top of that, it is almost $30,000 cheaper than the Aventador SVJ but is considerably more priced than the 720s. But owing to 720s' impeccable engineering, the performance levels, and the driving experience is evenly matched with the 812 Superfast.

Even on the inside, the 812 feels a bit more comfortable and plush. However, on the outside, the 702s look more sleek and handsome.

2019 McLaren 720s vs Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

The Mclaren 720s is a track-bred race car with a twin-turbocharged V6 powertrain. It follows the organic design language of McLaren inside out. The driving dynamics are slightly better than the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and less curb weight makes it more agile around corners. The car is also extremely visually appealing but it falls just behind the new age look of the 720s. When it comes to interiors, the quality is unmatched with clutter-free spaces that allow you to focus on the driving pleasures of the vehicle.

All in all, the 720 s is a much finer track tool than the Aventador but the Lambo offers a unique experience of the naturally aspirated V12 motor that a turbo car can never offer.

2019 McLaren 720s vs Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera follows a different approach, it tries to blend in the luxury of a sedan and a speed of a supercar together. it gives you a 6.0L V-12 which generates respectable horsepower. It's as powerful as some other cars in this competition here but isn't quite as fast as them in terms of outright acceleration and agility. But the engine is still amazing and the sound from that V12 engine is absolutely brilliant. It's not as brutal as the Lambo's V12 unit but is quite melodious and subtle about its performance.

Final Verdict
8.6/10

The 2019 Mclaren 720s is what you call the quintessential British bad boy of supercars, with a sleek 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 producing an eye-watering 710 hp of power. The Mclaren 720s is the ultimate track toy for the serious car connoisseurs and devoted petrol heads out there. Overall the $300,000 price tag of the car can never be judged based on practicality and value for money but can surely be broken down to sheer driving pleasure, drama, and an almost larger-than-life theatrical experience the coupe offers.
