About 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

3.5

Overall Rating

Timeless classic emerges once again with rounded edges the G-class now appeals to the urban demographic too. Once reserved for people who wanted brute strength and nothing less the G 550 is now an all-around package that delivers on all fronts.

Military bragging rights combined with a civilian license the G 550 is a vehicle that pushes the limits to what should be. King to the throne of off-roading and an astoundingly polarising design the G 550 is a renegade that simply does not give up.

The well-trod ladder frame SUV is still built by hand in the Magna Steyr Factory in Graz the G 550 comes with a 4.0L bi-turbo V8 with three locking differentials that are enough to conquer any off-road that you throw at it.

The G class was commissioned by the shah of Iran for Military purposes, but that doesn't end there. To this date, the G class remains an outdated and crude mode of transport and the 4x4 squared adds a pinch of madness to it. Available as a standalone option you can add different convenience and safety packages which raise the cost substantially.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Review

Pros

  • Classy & Elegant Looks
  • Spacious Cabin
  • Off-Road capabilities

Cons

  • Poor fuel efficiency
  • Overpriced
  • Wind Noise

Timeless classic emerges once again with rounded edges the G-class now appeals to the urban demographic too. Once reserved for people who wanted brute strength and nothing less the G 550 is now an all-around package that delivers on all fronts.

Overview

Military bragging rights combined with a civilian license the G 550 is a vehicle that pushes the limits to what should be. King to the throne of off-roading and an astoundingly polarising design the G 550 is a renegade that simply does not give up.

The well-trod ladder frame SUV is still built by hand in the Magna Steyr Factory in Graz the G 550 comes with a 4.0L bi-turbo V8 with three locking differentials that are enough to conquer any off-road that you throw at it.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The G-class starts at $123,000 and the G550 SUV is the base variant of the G-class. Even though this is the base variant, it still comes packed with a lot of features to compensate for its huge price tag.

The car has a modern handcrafted cabin, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, Harman Kardon surround sound system, and a sunroof.

The G class was commissioned by the shah of Iran for Military purposes, but that doesn't end there. To this date, the G class remains an outdated and crude mode of transport and the 4x4 squared adds a pinch of madness to it. Engine and Performance
8.4/10

The G550 SUV is powered by a 4.0 L Bi-Turbo V8 engine and the power is transferred to the wheels using a 9-speed automatic gearbox. The engine produces a maximum power of 416 HP and a maximum torque of 450 lb.-ft.

It is not the most refined engine among its competitors but still, many people love the performance of the engine. It is one of the few very cars that use 3 locking differentials.

The rivals also have a similar power output but it is the Range Rover that tops it all with a peak power output of 550 HP. The Range Rover is powered by a 5.0 L Supercharged V8 that is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Next comes the Lincoln Navigator Black Label with a power output of 450 HP, which is powered by a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Toyota Land Cruiser is the least powerful SUV although it sports a massive 5.7L V8 engine.

Acceleration

The G550 SUV with the 4.0 L BiTurbo V8 hits the 0-60 mph mark in just 5.8 seconds. Though this is impressive for a car that weighs nearly 6000 lbs., it does not feel composed at higher speeds. The old platform on which the car was built has a different type of driving dynamics compared to the modern SUV's.

The supercharged Land Rover Range Rover is the quickest to hit the 0 - 60 mph mark in just 4.6 seconds. The second is the Lincoln Navigator Black Label. Though the Lincoln Navigator Black Label has a much smaller engine, it hits the 0 - 60 mph mark in 5.5 seconds.

Ride and Handling

The G550 is a comfortable SUV. It features 3 locking differentials, which allows you to handle any terrain nature throws at the G550 SUV. The car sits on a high platform and hence has a higher center of gravity.

There is a fair amount of body roll while going through turns and corners. Though the car hits higher speeds easily, you feel the car shouldn't be driven at these speeds. The car isn't very stable and is not very confidence-inspiring at higher speeds.

Braking

The G550 SUV has 12.4-inch brakes on the front and 10.7-inch brakes on the rear to bring the massive SUV to halt. There is a 4 piston system on the front and rear disc of the mammoth SUV. The other SUVs feature much larger brakes on the front and rear.

The Toyota Land Cruiser comes to a halt from 70 mph in 183 ft. whereas the Lincoln Navigator requires 191 ft. for the vehicle to come to a complete stop.

Towing Capacity

The Lincoln Navigator Black Label has the best towing capacity among the cars compared here followed by the Land Cruiser. The G550 can tow an impressive 7700 pounds. However, among the behemoths here, the Mercedes G550 comes last.

The G-wagon is characterized by its boxy styling and body on frame construction. The boxy design of the G550 though old never fails to impress. There aren't many changes on the exterior of the SUV. The basic design of the G550 SUV remains the same. There is a lot of right-angled edge look rather than the smooth and curved design of the other SUVs.

Final Verdict

The Box on wheels configurations remains the same for this year too and manages to instill nostalgia in the eye of the beholder. This badass of yesteryear becomes slicker with the 9-speed gearbox borrowed from the guys at AMG. All in all, there is no one who defeats this car when it comes to off-roading.
