The Mini Cooper has been one of the most enjoyable hatchbacks and the drop top version is another great story. The MINI Cooper hatchback is a combination of small size, classic and retro designing alongside good performance. It is agile on corners and the design is charismatic. The Mini has enough of a heritage to make it revered amongst the industry.
The standard three-cylinder powertrain has decent performance which is enough for day to day driving. We recommend you to go with Cooper S which features a little punchier four cylinder powertrain. You should go with the Signature trim to give that custom feel Mini is known for.

When compared to the competition, the BMW 2-series takes the crown with fastest 0 to 60 runs closely followed by Audi A3 cabriolet which takes 5.9 seconds. Mazda MX 5 Miata and Mini Cooper S clock a similar time and there is not much of a difference.
The base engine has enough power and is surprisingly eager to accelerate and you can also opt the JCW variant for a little bit more punch. The six-speed transmission is butter smooth and power is evenly distributed over the whole rev range. The convertible body is flexible and you will notice creaks and rattles after a few months of ownership.
The convertible hot hatch weighs 2855 pounds and has a compact size. This helps zipping through city streets and gives the freedom to park it in tight squeezes with ease. Moreover, because of its compact design, it handles very well around corners and conveys a good feedback of the road through the well-weighted steering wheel. Firm suspension keeps the body roll on check and Mini's are agile around winding roads but you may feel jerks sometimes .Like many subcompact cars, all-wheel drive is not available.
Mini Cooper comes with very reassuring brakes which are easy to modulate in stop and go traffic scenarios. Due to its rally pedigree the Mini feels very agile on coroners and comes out of it without a hitch. The Mini uses a Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) on corners which monitors steering input and acceleration to determine the direction you want to go.
In the case your Mini starts to stray, then the system applies correct brake pressure to individual brakes and adjusts engine torque to maintain the correct line. Also, the automatic transmission makes an abrupt noise when you come to a sudden stop.

The Mazda MX 5 Miata is the best when it comes to braking performance because of low curb weight. The Mini Cooper despite its low curb weight stands last while the 2 series convertible which is heavier have better brakes. Audi A 3 Cabriolet also returns satisfying numbers.
The peppy turbocharged inline four is surprisingly fuel-efficient and returns pretty good numbers. With the 6 speed manual transmission you get 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway while the automatic transmission can return upto 23 mpg/city and 32 mpg/highway.

The competition is not far behind Cooper but still lacks a good 3-4 MPG. The closest it gets is the Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport that delivers a good 26/35/30 MPG in city/highway/combined areas respectively.
Your favorite Mini comes with a soft top, so that you can appreciate your surroundings. There are some unique elements like toggle switches and circular infotainment screen and dials that makes a Mini a Mini. It can seat four people in relative comfort while the four door variant can seat five. The fit and finish is better than most of the competitors. The leather-upholstery adds another layer of luxury to cabin ambiance.
The front seats are comfortable all day long and offer good lumbar support. Getting in and out for front passengers wouldn't be an issue as the doors open wide but the front seats don't slide forward too much which makes it difficult for rear passengers to enter. The front offers 41.4 inches of legroom. Even the tallest of the passengers would have ample room to stretch their legs, without hitting the posts. Enter the rear seats, it is a completely different story

Dimensionally, the Mini is a compact car. Often the figures are on the lowest side. Essentially it makes way for a cabin which is more suited to front passengers only. If you are looking for more utility or a rear seat which can be comfortable for adult passengers than your money is better spent elsewhere. The Mazda Miata has seating for only two people.
Interior Features
The JCW comes with an intuitive infotainment which is housed in a circular screen with following amenities. The ambient lighting change color according to the mode selected.
The Mini Cooper comes in various body styles ranging from hardtop to convertibles to wagons. .The convertible has the least amount, offering a 5.7-cubic-foot trunk and it can slightly increase with the 60/40 split folding seats. Convertible doesn't have much space because of the soft top which folds down but Mini Cooper have considerable amount of space when contrasted with rivals. The Audi A 3 cabriolet is the most spacious.
The Convertible variant of the classic Alec Issigonis design has its own charm of retro styling that separates it from other subcompacts. Mini Cooper has enjoyed cult status amongst aficionados and has a pretty old cultural identity. You will notice everywhere and a long list of customization ensures that no two Mini in wild would be too much like the other.
Unlike other Mini's you can lower the roof in 18 seconds which is achingly slow. you can also opt for sunroof mode which lets the breeze in and features a unique woven Union Jack Design. The low and wide stance helps in handling at corners with supreme acceleration. In the rear the twin exhaust tips are situated in the middle and you also get the option Union-Jack-Patterned LED taillight.

Dimensionally, the Mini is a compact car and it has got the smallest footprint among rivals. The Mazda MX-Miata is a little bit larger than the Cooper S. If you desire more space than definitely go with the Audi A3 cabriolet or the BMW 2 series convertible which are dimensionally bigger.
Exterior Features
The Mini JCW comes with an Ultra-Rigid Body which reduces body roll and provides a super-tight handling. The Mini is loaded with 8 airbags and tons of other safety aids:
The Mazda Miata cost less than the base variant of Cooper and puts out similar horsepower as the Mini. Mini Cooper have better driving dynamics than the Miata and also comes is race spec JCW variant.. It has loads of personalization options available for upgrading performance as well as making your ride one-of-a-kind at a much cheaper price.
Overall, the Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport is a better pick if performance, safety and driving pleasure are something you want along with the value of your money.
The Audi A3 Mini are somewhat similar but the Audi is much like a sedan with soft top and two door configuration. It is a great car in terms of design, performance but priced much higher than the Mini . The JCW variant cost $2000 cheaper than the A3 Cabriolet and comes with sport suspension, sports bucket seats and amazing fuel economy for the performance.
Overall, the MINI Convertible JCW edition is a much better pick for the feature-packed hot hatch it is. However, Audi A3 has superior braking and much premium use of materials.
The Mini brand is owned by the parent company BMW and it also offers a convertible 2 series which is a rear wheel-drive with strong performance. Both deliver strong overall performance without needlessly sacrificing comfort, and their interiors feature high levels of refinement.
On the downside, neither has particularly accommodating back seats. The JCW variant is cheaper than the base Audi A3 which is a better pick overall. You can also personalize your Mini according to your taste which is not available with Audi. The Mini Cooper has an edge in terms of overall value and it is a good choice.
The Mini Cooper is equipped with a potent turbocharged inline four and go-cart like driving dynamics makes it a corner carver. The Mini Cooper is for you if style and personalization tops your list of priorities. Quality materials and plenty of options also add to their desirability levels.
If you are someone who prioritizes ride comfort and utility, then your money would be better spent elsewhere. The likes of BMW 2 series and Audi A3 are premium offerings that deliver utility and comfort without compromising on power. But the Mini is a true head turner and sheer driving pleasure makes up for the premium price tag.
