Overall Rating
While hatchbacks and sedans are dying across the world now in the hands of SUVs and crossovers, the Mini 4-door hatch still holds its ground very well. This iconic beauty is probably the most popular and most skilled luxury hatch out there.
The 2019 Mini 4-door hatch remains essentially unchanged over its predecessor. No additions or subtractions, and you still get the Mini’s iconic design and pleasurable driving traits along with 4-door practicality. Even the starting MSRP of the 2019 Mini 4-door hatch kicks in at $22,900 which is just a nominal $300 increase over its previous model year
We recommend picking up the “Cooper S model” of the 2019 Mini 4-door hatch. If you want pure performance, you can pick the JCW but if you need a comfortable, practical and punchy daily-driver, the Cooper S has a powerful 2.0-liter turbo along with a healthy suite of features, to keep you covered.

In the trim department, MIni follows a trim structure similar to Jaguar and Land Rover. Primarily, the 2019 Mini 4-Door hatch is available in two trims, the Cooper and Cooper S. The main difference between both the two main trims is the upgraded 2.0-liter inline-4 pot in the latter. However, there are also three different sub-trims available with the main trims which basically add up premium features in an ascending order. The three sub-trims are namely the Classic, Signature and the Iconic.

On the power front, the 2019 Mini 4-door hatch is available in two different engine choices across two different trims. While the one in the Cooper is a 1.5-liter turbo 3-cylinder that makes 134 hp while a 2.0-liter turbo in the Cooper S pumps out 189 hp. Both the engines come matd to a 6-speed manual transmission.
While the 2.0-liter motor in the Cooper S surely packs some extra punch and a stronger mid-range, the base 1.5-liter 3-cylinder fairly checks your daily needs. The motor feels refined and offers a healthy punch down the lower rev-range. The 6-speed manual transmission too feels refined and smooth and shifts pretty quickly as well.

Among the rivals here, the Mini appears to be the one with the least power output. The Civic Sport hatch on the other hand outshines others with its 174 hp output. However, the bigger 2.0-liter engine of the Mini does make more power than the Honda here.
With the standard 1.5-liter engine, the Mini 4-door hatch is as humble on the go as it looks from the outside. No speed thrills and the premium hatch brings up a 0-60 mph on the speedo in 7.7 seconds. Not too bad considering its overall character and the powertrain in particular.

Among the competition here, we don't have the complete performance date yet, but the Toyota Corolla XSE does post marginally better acceleration figures than the Mini. The Corolla accomplishes teh 0-60 mph task in just 7.5 seconds. Get any of the Mini JCW though and these figures would change dramatically.
Out in the city or the highway, the Mini 4-door rewards you with a supple and smooth ride quality. The suspension has a balanced tuned and though it may be on the softer side, it tackles road undulations pretty smoothly. Be it single winding stretches or twisty mountain roads, the Mini grips the road confidently with almost no body movements at all.
Even at higher speeds, the cabin remains fairly isolated and vibrations are very well controlled as well. Thanks to the light and precise steering, there are not many cars out there in its segment which offer a crispier and sharper handling than the Mini here.
Take the 2019 Mini 4-door hatch on a braking test and that's when Mini’s intricate engineering showcases itself. Equipped with 4-wheel ABS with discs, the Mini 4-door hatch stops from 60-0 mph in a mere 116 feet. The firm brake pedal has a good bite and feedback and at any given point, the MIni doesn’t seem to exhibit nose-dive or brake fade.

Among the competition here, the complete data is again not available regarding the braking efficiency of all the rivals here. However, with its balanced weight distribution and advanced braking apparatus, we presume the Mini to have one of the best brakes in the lot here.
While the Mini’s base 1.5-liter 3-cylinder may seem a bit underpowered to many, it actually serves a very good purpose. The smaller engine together with the tighter proportions of the MIni help it to offer a 31 combined mpg.

Among the segment here, al the other rivals seem to offer a similar efficiency as well. Perhaps the Mini displays its frugal side with a good dose of premiumness and sharp handling. Surprisingly, with 25 combined mpg, the Subaru Impreza stands last in this list. Thanks to its larger engine, rugged character and a standard AWD.
Mini Hardtop Cooper can easily accommodate 5 average-sized passengers and its optional sports seats are very comfortable and supportive. By stock, there are 6-way front bucket seats fitted in. There’s a generous amount of cushioning and is contoured well enough for longer rides.Â
The front seats have plenty of legroom and headroom which makes the driver comfortable while riding the vehicle, but the rear seats are a little cramped. For added comfort, there is dual-zone automatic front air-conditioning. The interior upholstery is SensaTec leatherette and can be upgraded to leather upholstery which is available in multiple colors.

In terms of front legroom, all the cars are quite similar, just a 2-inch difference between the most and least. The Subaru Impreza and the Honda Civic have a little more space in the rear than the rest when it comes to rear legroom.Â
The 4-door Cooper S is equipped with quite a number of basic infotainment features which serves the passengers with a very user-friendly 6.5-inch display with a smartphone and Bluetooth integration, parking assistant among others.
Here's a list of both standard and premium infotainment features available with the car: -

Despite its good overall packaging, the Mini 4-door hatch does disappoint with its compromised cargo space to some extent. However, its 13.2 cu-fts of standard cargo box should be enough for most of your packaging needs.

In the class rivalry here, disappointingly, the Mini is the one with the lowest cargo space, The Honda Civic hatch with its 22.6 cu-fts of cargo space tops the list. Thanks to the Civic’s hatchback-like rear profile and a wide and tall boot-lid.Â
The Mini Cooper looks quite good with its long nose which has been recently redesigned and is quite noticeable. Apart from that, the taillights have been given a square design, while other specifics of Mini remain the same: oval lights on the front fenders, upright windshield, and an oblong grille.
In terms of wheels, mini by stock will fit 16” wheels to the car and can upgrade all the up to 18” wheels and they do come in multiple designs. The dimensions of the Mini are quite compact and weaving to and fro is quite easy even in heavy traffic. The ground clearance is good for this segment, and the car can navigate through some pretty bumpy roads as well.

Even with 4-Doors added length, it is still shorter in length by 12-inches to the next shortest car - the Corolla hatch. However, the rest of the dimensions are quite similar to other cars. The biggest difference is the weight, even though this is the 4 door version it is still lighter than the other three cars.
The IIHS nor the NHTSA have rated the 2018 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Hatchback. However, the engineers at Mini have installed plenty of safety features by standard and some can be opted for while purchasing the car. Some of the safety features are:
In comparison to the Mini 4-door hatch here, the Toyota Corolla is a bit easy to drive, is quicker than the Mini and also has low maintenance costs for sure. However, the Corolla just can’t match the elegance, premimnes, refinement and drive-engagement of the Mini.
Compared to the Mini hatch here, the Honda Civic hatch has a more athletic and trendy design. Apart from being more powerful on the standard engine part, the Civic is also more practical than the Mini here. However, the Mini outshines the Civic with its plush cabin, ride comfort, refined powertrain and a crisp handling
If you're looking for a small hatchback which not only has a unique style statement but is also high on premiumness and features, the 2019 Mini 4-door is surely the pick for you. Along with a comfortable ride, the Mini also offers dynamic handling with good efficiency and various engine options to choose from.
