Overall Rating
The Altima is powered by a 2.5L, Inline-4 cylinder engine or an all-new 2.0L, Variable Compression, Turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine, both mated to a CVT gearbox.
At a time when SUVs and crossover are becoming more popular than ever, Nissan has decided to completely redo their midsize Altima sedan. The 2019 Nissan Altima marks the beginning of its sixth generation with an all-new design inside-out, a new 2.0L Variable Compression turbocharged engine, and all-wheel drive for all its variants - something which none of the sedans in this segment offer, not even Accord and Camry.
The price of the new Nissan Altima starts at an MSRP of $23,750 and buyers have the option to choose from five trims on offer. There's also a limited-production Edition One trim, which will be limited only to 3900 customers. For a starting MSRP of $35,750, the 2019 Nissan Altima Edition One takes all the features from the Platinum model and adds to them features like 19-inch dark-grey alloy wheels, ground lighting, illuminated side sills, and rear spoiler.
We would recommend you one of the higher trims like the SL or the Platinum trim with all-wheel drive configuration and the base engine. The higher trims are very well loaded and traction from the all-wheel-drive system is always welcome. The 2.5L turbocharged engine is not offered with an all-wheel-drive layout though. If an all-wheel drive is not a necessity, then opt for the 2.5L turbocharged engine, or else the 2.0L engine with an all-wheel drive is a really sweet deal as well.

The 2019 Altima comes in six trim levels - S, SR, SV, SL, Platinum, and the Edition One. All Altima models, except Edition One, are powered by a 2.5L, inline-4-cylinder engine, as standard, which is paired to a CVT transmission across all trims. In a first for this sedan, you can either have an FWD or an AWD layout in any of the variants, even the base 2.5 S. Also debuting this year is a 2.0L Variable Compression turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

It is available on Altima SR and Platinum trims - standard on Edition One - and makes 248 hp and 280 lb-ft torque. Sadly, it can be had only in the front-wheel-drive configuration. Other than that, this completely reworked midsize sedan offers interesting features like a flat-bottom steering wheel, carbon-fiber finished interior trim, a 7.0-inch driver information display, an 8.0-inch floating, touchscreen infotainment unit, and ProPilot Assist.

We would recommend the SR or the SL trim with the all-wheel drive configuration. These trims are very well loaded for the price and traction from the all-wheel-drive system is always welcome. The 2.0L turbocharged engine is not offered with all-wheel drive. So if all-wheel drive is not a necessity, then only opt for the 2.0L turbocharged engine, as it is not the most economical choice.

"While the Accord battles the Camry for sales supremacy, the Altima now offers something its Toyota and Honda rivals don't at any price-all-wheel drive." -MotorTrend
The Altima comes with two engine options - a 2.5L inline-4-cylinder engine developing 188 hp and 180 lb.-ft of torque and a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The 2.5L engine has been there for quite some time, but it has been refined further to make 9 more horsepower than before. It has always been a potent engine and is adequately responsive, even more so now. The 2.0-liter variable compression turbocharged engine, however, is where all the fun and excitement lies.
The term "variable compression" means that the compression ratio is altered by the engine depending on driving conditions. A higher compression ratio will give you higher power while a lower compression ratio gives you better fuel efficiency, thus combining the best of both worlds. This 2.0L VC-T motor develops 248 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft of torque. The motor is smoother than the base 2.5liter unit and is one hell of a responsive powerplant as well. A CVT transmission is the only gearbox available with either of the engines and the good news is that it is not like other CVTs.

It is refined and seamless, simulating gear changes under hard acceleration. Nissan says that they have recalibrated it and it feels better and snappier than the one in the previous Altima. The competitors - Ford Fusion, Kia Optima, and Hyundai Sonata - all have very competitive power and torque figures but the Altima takes the crown here with its base engine. It is estimated to do naught to 60 mph in 8 seconds and it can also manage the quarter-mile in 16 seconds. Only the Kia Optima beats it by doing naught to 60 in 7.5 seconds and reaching the quarter-mile in 15.9 seconds.
These figures are achieved with the base 2.5L engine while with the 2.0L turbocharged engine, Altima is able to dash from 0 to 60 mph in an impressive 5.8 seconds flat. The new Altima rides very well indeed too. It has a very good balance between ride quality and body control. The ride remains comfortable and composed and you could easily spend long hours in the cabin. Also, it maintains its composure quite well even through the corners. There is not much body roll and the car beautifully glides into fast corners and sharp turns perfectly well.
The facelifted 2019 Altima has the best fuel economy in the class. The new engines come with newer technology and the CVT transmission helps achieve the impressive mileage figures as well. Accordingly, it returns 32 miles to the gallon combined which is quite above the competition.

The Nissan Altima also has one of the best driving ranges in the segment. It can go 632 miles on a full tank of gas on a highway. However, the best range in the segment is delivered by the Hyundai Sonata even though it has a lower gas mileage than the Altima. It makes it possible with the big 18.5 gallons gas tank.
"The cabin leans towards a clean, uncluttered look, and higher trims add handsome materials such as leather surfaces and wood trim." -Cars.USNews.Com
The new interior design is simplistic yet elegant with a decent amount of premium touches all over. All controls have been very neatly laid out and the more expensive models get premium metallic trim. The new 8-inch floating infotainment system sits atop the AC vents and it looks sleek and smart. The climate controls have a dedicated panel to them which also look very neat. In between, there is a wraparound plastic trim on the dashboard that has been simulated to look like wood and it looks rather good too.
The steering is slim with a flat bottom and houses several controls for various things. There is a 7-inch information display in between the analog dials in the instrument cluster which is also very attractive. The gear shifter is a normal lever - thankfully so, instead of buttons and dials - and there is a cup holder beside it. It is a very pleasing cabin to be in which has been designed very aesthetically. So the overall quality of the interior materials of the 2019 Altima feels upscale but there are some minor fit and finish issues that might bog down the pleasant experience of the cabin.

Nevertheless, the "Zero Gravity" front seats from Nissan are particularly very comfortable and supportive over long distances. They provide great cushioning and good bolstering on the sides as well. They are heated and offer multi-way power adjustments and are quite easily the best seats in the entire class. The rear seats are comfortable too and can easily seat three people. If there are no three passengers, you have a central armrest with cup holders as well.
The new 8-inch infotainment screen is a touch unit and is pretty good. It is easy to use and quite responsive to commands. The graphics are quite crisp as well. There are a few shortcut physical buttons below the screen for essential functions which make it very handy. There's also Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard. However, the touch screen is quite prone to fingerprint marks.
Some of the highlights of the infotainment system of the 2018 Nissan Altima include:
"Thanks to liberal use of the hammer and chisel, Nissan designers have trimmed the round fatty edges off the Altima and given the new one a leaner and more focused look." -Carbuzz.Com
The new sixth-generation Altima looks handsome and bold. The huge V-shaped chrome grille now comes down the entire length of the bumper, which is further surrounded by a dark chrome V-grille. The headlamps have been completely redesigned and are now sleeker with arrow-like details inside them. The bumper housing the fog lamps have sharp angular cuts and creases to make for a very bold front fascia. Move over to the side and you will see two prominent character lines.
One starts with the headlamps, runs along the window line all the way to the rear door while the other runs from the taillamps to the front door - both beautifully contouring the side profile. There is a chrome band along the window line and the sloping roofline has a black-accented panel on the C-pillar which gives it a sporty look. The 18-inch wheels look great too. At the rear, the taillamps have been made sleeker and sharper with LED units and the dual exhaust with a mild diffuser in the bumper looks rather cool.

There is also a subtle boot lid spoiler to finish things off. Overall, it looks smart, contemporary, and is sure to turn some heads. The 2019 Altima has grown in dimensions. It is longer, wider, and sits lower than before. It is even the longest in the competition here at 192.9 inches, but the Hyundai Sonata is the widest. It does, however, have a long wheelbase of 111.2 inches, which makes up for a spacious cabin. Furthermore, the light weight of the Altima sedan keeps it on its toes while moving through traffic.
The new 2019 Altima is pretty well loaded, even when it comes to safety, with almost all the basic features. Apart from the safety features we see in almost every car these days, it also has an array of semi-automatic driving features, which is really commendable in this segment. The Nissan Altima comes with ProPilot Assist, which is essentially level 2 automation, making it semi-autonomous. It can manage its distance from other cars, keep itself within a lane properly and also provide steering, braking, and acceleration assistance. We also have to mention that the Altima also scored well in the crashworthiness test conducted by NHTSA and IIHS. It received the IIHS' Top Safety Pick Award as well.

The 2019 Ford Fusion is a very bold-looking car that combines sharp handling with a composed ride. Its interior design is quite boring though as compared to the Altima and its acceleration is not the most spirited. The 2019 Nissan Altima on the other hand looks great inside out, has better performance than the Ford Fusion, has a very good ride quality but isn't as good a handler as the Fusion.
Fuel economy is poor for the Fusion and really great for the Altima. The technology in the Altima is far better than the ones in the Fusion. The Fusion is a little cheaper than the Altima but that said, the refreshed Altima makes for a better package and offers really great value for just a little premium.
The Kia Optima is a stylish-looking car with very well-appointed interiors having lots of standard technology. However, when it comes to driving, the 2019 Optima is not all that great. Its handling is average, and the base engine is quite sluggish. It has a comfortable ride, but the Altima does it better, particularly with those seats.
However, the 2.5L engine in the Optima is the best performer in the competition. Talking about the Altima now, it may not be as good a performer as the Optima, but it scores better in a lot of other things - better fuel economy, better handling, comfortable ride, and very nice interiors. With a very small difference in price, the Altima being just a little more expensive also is the better among the two.
Here is one car that challenges the Altima really well. A very smart-looking car with good interiors that are loaded with features as standard. What is good about the Hyundai Sonata is that it drives really well too. It has a strong and potent engine and has the right balance between a comfortable ride and enthusiastic handling.
While the numbers on paper do not quite suggest the performance of the Sonata, it is quite good and is also a better handle on twisty roads. It does not have quite as good fuel economy as the Altima but is pretty competent. In the end, it is quite difficult to choose between either of these cars but this Hyundai is a little cheaper than the Nissan which probably makes it more ideal for buyers.
The new sixth-generation Altima is a great car, and while people were shifting to crossovers and SUVs, this midsize sedan makes a bold statement and could possibly make people look back at sedans. The 2019 Nissan Altima looks handsomely aggressive, has good quality interiors, offers comfortable ride quality, and also packs two potent engines. For all that the Nissan Altima has to offer at its price point, it is a great value for money offering and you would be very happy to make this your daily driver.
