Overall Rating
In the times when every automobile marque is busy with crossovers, the 2019 Subaru Outback is one of those things which isn’t a crossover.
In the times when every automobile marque is busy with crossovers, the 2019 Subaru Outback is one of those things which isn’t a crossover. In a time when station wagons are becoming rarer by the day. The Subaru Outback embodies the niceties of a wagon with car-like handling, good utility, and combines it with 8.7-inch ground clearance.
The Subaru Outback is offered with 2 engines that come mated with a CVT and standard AWD. The pricing for the base model starts at $26,345. The base engine has all the characteristics of a daily driver. The bigger six-cylinder engine brings more power and towing capacity.
For most buyers, we would recommend the 2.5i Premium trim. This trim brings active safety features as standard equipment. For buyers seeking more luxury, we would suggest the 2.5i Limited trim.

Which trim should you buy?
For most buyers, we would recommend the 2.5i Premium trim. This trim brings active safety features as standard equipment. For buyers seeking more luxury, we would suggest the 2.5i Limited trim.
Subaru Outback is equipped with a 175-hp flat-four motor which comes mated to a standard Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The Outback is offered with a standard All-Wheel Drive system which offers all-terrain drivability, even from the bare-bones base trim.
Under the hood, the Outback wagon carries a signature Subaru-boxer engine. This horizontally opposed engine is designed to offer a rewarding driving experience. The engine boasts compact packaging and a lower center of gravity.
For those of you, not satisfied with the 175-hp output. Subaru also offers a 3.6-liter flat-6 engine that produces 256 hp. The additional power makes merging and passing easier than before.

Considering the competition, the Subaru Outback produces modest power output. At 175 hp, the Outback is better than the Fiat 500L and Volkswagen Golf SportWagen. But as the price gap increases, we reach the more premium side of the segment. 2019 Subaru Outback starts losing some of its steam to Audi Allroad and Volvo wagons.
The 2019 Subaru Outback wagon passes the 0 to 60 mph marker in 9.5 seconds and a quarter-mile is traveled in 17.4 seconds. There wouldn't be any sloppy shifting work from the transmission. The engine is quiet throughout the rev range. The CVT is tuned to offer smooth gear shifts.
The engine delivers a linear and predictable surge of acceleration across the engine's power band. Even with the larger flat-6 engine, the Outback responds to the minutest changes to the pedal. One way to describe the throttle response would be as it is an extension to your foot.

The turbocharged Audi Allroad is the quickest of this lot - it does a zero to sixty in 5.9 seconds. Audi is followed by Volvo V60 and VW Golf SportWagen. Sadly, the Outback wouldn't outrun the competitors but it would travel terrain that no other wagon will even dare to attempt.
2019 Subaru Outback shares its underpinnings with the Legacy sedan. The Outback inherits its driving characteristics- a very stable and carlike ride. It is hard to believe that even after an 8.7-inch ground clearance, the Outback doesn't handle like the other jacked-up hatchbacks and wagons. The trick is its boxer-four engine that sits low and yields a favorable center of gravity and reduces body sway and roll to a great extent.
To make the best use of the 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the Outback comes with standard AWD and X-Mode. This model is tailor-made for tackling rough terrain. It is also equipped with standard Hill Descent Control to slow the wagon while coming down steep gradients.
Subaru Outback screeches to a halt from 60 mph within 129 feet. The braking performance is average for this segment. The standard AWD system ensures better traction in any driving scenario. Infiniti has calibrated the brakes well to inspire confidence.

The Outback stands taller than most of its competitors and its ground clearance rivals many SUVs. The braking performance suffers due to its SUV like qualities. Fiat 500 wagon offers comparable braking performance, taking 123 feet to stop from 60 mph. The Volvo V60 takes 126 feet to achieve a similar result.
The 2019 Subaru Outback's fuel economy doesn't set the benchmark for this segment. It is frugal but others squeeze out more miles from a gallon of gasoline. On the brighter side, the Outback is equipped with an 18.5-gallon fuel tank which makes it a great choice for long trips. 2019 Subaru Outback scores 28 mpg of combined mileage. Choose the flat-six engine and the fuel efficiency takes a severe drop.

And when we compare it to the other wagons, it is easy to find that turbocharged engines are more frugal. Volkswagen Golf SportWagen scores a combined mpg of 30 while bettering Audi Allroad's score by a margin of 2 mpg. The Subaru Outback and Volvo V60 offer an identical combined mpg of 28.
Subaru offers loads of technological features as standard equipment. For its price range, the Outback's interior feels classier. Front and rear seats offer great support. There is a wide range of adjustments for front seats. The lower trim comes with an 8-way manual adjustment while the upper trims offer a 10-way power adjustment. Seats are comfortable for long journeys.
The Outback really scores well when we consider the overall fit and finish. The cabin has been put together well. It would be difficult to find hard plastics in the cabin. The cabin is roomy and comfortable and looks pricier than you actually paid for. Climb up the trim ladder, you would be spoiled with full-fat leather trim, Piano Black trim, and wood inserts.

Subaru Outback offers a user-friendly infotainment system. All the digital systems can be controlled via the touchscreen. Subaru calls it the STARLINK Multimedia system. It offers smartphone integration via Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Pandora. Higher trims come with a 12-speaker, 576-watt Harman Kardon system.
Interior Features
The Subaru Outback offers a very welcoming interior trim. Some of these features are mentioned below:
The Outback has won accolades for its utility. The trunk capacity is 35.5 cu-ft. If you need more space, then the rear seatbacks can be folded to expand the space to 73.3 cu-ft. If you are not looking to carry tall boxes, then the Outback's rear trunk space is all you will need.

And, yes it can tow a decent haul of 3000 lbs. when equipped with the larger flat-six engine. Small-item storage is good. There are enough cubby spaces spread across the cabin and offers decent amount of storage, be it bottles or auxillary stuff.
Subaru Outback stands the tallest in the pack at 66.5-inches and it is blessed with 8.7-inch ground clearance. The Outback wears a rugged look and it is really complemented by the muscular bumper claddings. The integrated roof rack also builds its credibility as a going anywhere vehicle.
Dimensionally, the Subaru Outback diminishes other wagons in the comparison. Except for the V90 though not by much but nonetheless.

The Outback wagon tips the scales at 3624 lbs. and at 189.9-inches it is shorter only to the Volvo V90. It offers an average interior room due to a 108.1-inch wheelbase. The V90 wagon offers one of the best interior rooms due to a 115.8-inch wheelbase.
The Subaru Outback enjoys a very clever positioning. Outback embodies the characteristics of a wagon and a crossover. By doing so, it brings utility and ground clearance without bailing out on driving dynamics. Subaru Outback wears a simple design. Nothing too fancy here, the Outback surely looks rugged. The protrusive design of the bumpers and rocker panel trim adds to its bulk and makes it look like an all-terrain vehicle.
The Subaru Outback scores well when it comes to safety. What it loses in terms of raw horsepower is easily leveled out by the standard safety equipment on offer. All Outback trims have automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control as standard equipment.
The Fiat 500L is available with a single-engine choice - turbocharged 1.4-liter engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that powers the front wheels. The pricing for the base Pop trim starts at $21,750.
The 500 L suffers when we talk about fit and finish. Fiat could have used better materials. The handling dynamics are befitting for a point A to B commuter. So, if you want to spend some quality time behind the wheel - look elsewhere. Lack of AWD (even as an option) keeps it restricted to the urban sprawl. The 500L wagon trades in sportiness in favor of offering a compliant ride quality.
The Sportwagen is a compelling option for the asking price if you are willing to buy a wagon. It's spacious, comfortable, and well-built. The ride is composed and the steering is responsive - a thing inherited from the Golf hatchback on which it's based.
However, it's worth considering the competitor. The Outback offers considerably more spacious interiors for a little more asking price and a little less fun. The stablemate Golf Alltrack is a more premium offering. However, if these do not impress you much, go ahead with the Sportwagen - it's an accomplished wagon with a relatively low asking price.
It has become a known fact that Audi produces some of the best driver-oriented cars and the same goes for the 2019 Audi A4 Allroad. The car commands a premium price when compared to its competition. For that premium price tag ($37,400) it offers better performance than the other wagons in the segment. The A4 Allroad combines a powerful engine, world-class driving dynamics, and a solid fit and finish. If you like to be behind the wheel then the price premium might be worth your time.
Subaru Outback has 2 engines on offer. A 175 hp flat-four and 256 hp flat-six. The base 2.5i trim will cost you $26,345. If you need the extra power, the price will jump to $34,995.
There is little that is wrong with the Outback. For decades, the Outback has been a hot seller in the Subaru line-up. Our only gripe is the lackluster acceleration from the base 2.5-liter engine. With a full load of cargo and passengers, this engine runs out of steam. So, you have to carefully plan for merging and passing.
But talk about utility, fit and finish, and drivability. The Outback comes off as a strong contender in the segment. It offers a spacious and comfortable cabin with a solid finish. Outback also offers a good driving position with a commanding view from the front. And compared to the other wagons in the class, Subaru Outback's off-roading capabilities are above average.
