Overall Rating
Coming in both a 5 seater as well as a 7 seater configuration, this popular VW suv has an option for every consumer need. This is further reinforced by the sheer volume of features it offers increasing to its usability
After a major refresh in 2018 for its second-generation, the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan hits the stores with no major changes. You still get the same elegant and premium appeal along with some good practicality too.
The second-gen Volkswagen Tiguan is surely one of the better presented compact-SUVs out there and one which is rich in features as well. For 2019, the Tiguan adds an alarm system on the "SE" while digital gauge cluster and parking sensors are now standard on the "SEL ''. Everything else remains all too familiar.
The SEL trim offers a lot of convenience features for its price and would suit most people. The SEL model has a good blend of safety, driver-assistance and creature comforts that one would need on a daily basis. For People wanting a tech-laden SUV, the SEL Premium trim will fit the bill well.

Volkswagen has made some small changes in the trim-structure of the 2019 Tiguan. The Optional R-Line trim makes its way into the 2019 as a separate trim. Customers have an option to choose among the 6 trims depending on whether they want an AWD setup or a front wheel drive setup. The feature-list though remains very familiar with the advancement of premium tech and safety features, up the trim ladder. Pricing for the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan starts at $24,295 for the base "S'' and climbs all the way up to $38,895 for the fully-loaded SEL-Premium R-Line.

The SEL Premium Trim packs in a lot of Premium Features with itself while the R-Line adds Sportiness to the overall design of the Tiguan. The 7 Seater Configurations are available only in the FWD trim and all trims of the Tiguan come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Trim to Choose
The SEL trim offers a lot of convenience features for its price and would suit most people. The SEL model has a good blend of safety, driver-assistance and creature comforts that one would need on a daily basis. For People wanting a tech-laden SUV, the SEL Premium trim will fit the bill well.
Since its facelift in 2018, the Volkswagen Tiguan has persisted with its famed 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 which makes 184hp and 221 ft-lbs of torque. The engine is refined, smooth and has ample power to get things going all day without any hassle. While the engine has a good thump in the mid-range, down the lower rpm range, the engine does seem to struggle a bit.
Apart from the sluggish low-end power delivery, the engine does seem strong and confident at highway speeds. Transmission duties are performed by an 8-speed Tiptronic Automatic which is smooth and its shifts with good precision as well. However, at times, the turbo-lag from the engine does seem to make it a bit hesitant.

The Tiguan’s TSI motor generates class leading torque while the power figure ranks among the best in the segment. We particularly like the 4Motion AWD technology offered in the Tiguan that arms it with more grip and confidence to tackle some rough patches. However, do remember that the Tiguan is not a Land Rover Discovery for sure. A bit more power on tap with the AWD though could have made the Tiguan more enjoyable nonetheless.
No fireworks here and the Tiguan's 185 hp motor has a rather humble output. 0-60 MPH comes up in humble 8.2 seconds which is almost the class-average. As with the case of any turbocharged motor in the world, the Volkswagen Tiguan isn't the fastest to take off the line. In fact, the Tiguan struggles a bit more compared to similar turbo-powered cars to get in the swing.
The turbocharger unit in the Tiguan starts providing its boost once the motor revs past 1600 rpm before which it offers a significant turbo-lag. Secondly, the Tiguan's weight doesn't make the SUV feel agile or eager to respond to any throttle inputs as quickly as one would expect from an SUV of this class.

The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan is as comfortable and elegant on the move, as it looks. The ride is smooth and supple and the suspension negotiates road undulations very well. However, interaction with larger obstacles do get broadcast inside the cabin. On most occasions though road noise and vibrations inside the cabin are very well controlled.
While the Tiguan remains poised and planted on straight patches it does exhibit some body movement around cornering. However, the available 4Motion AWD system does keep a good control on that too with enhanced grip and traction. The steering wheel is a bit on the lighter side and though it's not very direct it offers good precision for quick maneuvers.
For its size and class, the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan gets a confident set of brakes. It comes standard with 4-wheel ABS and Automatic Emergency Braking as standard. The brake pedal feels firm and solid and also has a good bite into it. Getting used to the brakes won't take much time.
Hit the pedal harder on emergency situations and the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan stops from 60-0 mph in just 124 feet. However, on harder applications, you will notice some visible nose-dives. No great surprises there since most of the cars in this segment owing to their size, show similar traits.

From behind the wheels, the 2019 Tiguan does seem to be an efficient stopper, but that's not exactly the case here. Despite a set of comparatively shorter brakes, the Honda CR-V is the best stopper among the pack here with a 60-0 stopping distance of just 115 feet.
While the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan offers class leading torque and power, the downside is that all this performance comes at the price of gas MPG. You get 22 and 29 MPG in city and highway respectively while in combined driving, the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan delivers a 25 MPG fuel economy. However, with a 15.3 gallons of fuel tank, the Tiguan does deliver a 444 miles of combined driving range.

For most of your driving needs, the Tiguan's economy should be adequate in everyday driving. However, its rivals offer a bit more efficiency where the Tiguan is the least efficient among the pack here. Thanks to the Tiguan's thirsty powertrain setup. Interestingly, all the three rivals here have an exactly similar 28 MPG combined economy
The cabin inside the Volkswagen Tiguan has to rank among the best in class in terms of the presentation and finishing. The cabin feels roomy enough and the cabin design feels upscale and sporty. The interior layout is mostly black but you do get some gloss black inserts around the infotainment display and steering. The door-panels and the gear-selector also get a brushed-aluminium finish for a contrasting experience. While the base models are mostly platicky, the higher trims do get soft materials around the cabin.
Also the build quality seems sturdy with all buttons properly placed with no signs of inconsistencies or panel gaps. As standard on the base model, you get cloth upholstery and manual front seat adjustments but the higher SE and SEL trims do unlock heated front seats with simulated leather upholstery. The SEL Premium also unlocks full leather upholstery. The front seats are wide and supportive with a good height and thick bolstering. Even the rear bench is wode enough to fit three adults with good comfort over long journeys.

The Volkswagen Tiguan, despite its seemingly compact looking dimensions offers a good amount of space inside for passengers. There is a good amount of legroom and shoulder room while the head room will be adequate for most passengers except the taller ones. The second row in the Tiguan is particularly suited for long rides as the space offered is immense to stretch your legs or relax your muscles.
Even in terms of practicality, the Tiguan offers a healthy 12.2 cu-fts of cargo space with all its seven seats up. Interestingly, all the rivals here have larger sarego space owing to their 5-seat packaging. However, you can also fold the third and second row in the Tiguan as well for extra storage space.
The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan comes with a plethora of features, to keep you entertained on your long weekend drives or office commutes. The touchscreen infotainment screen comes in two sizes namely a 6.5" and an 8" unit depending on the trim you choose. The infotainment interface is extremely simple to use, gives good feedback to user inputs and offers a lag-free experience.
In terms of features, the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get Bluetooth, USB, rearview camera and a six-speaker audio system as standard fitment. Moving up the trim order also unlocks satellite radio, voice commands, digital gauge cluster and a nine-speaker premium Fender audio. In a nutshell, the available infotainment features with the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan are listed below:
Interior Features
As expected from an SUV of this category, Volkswagen has bundled the 2019 Tiguan with a host of Interior Features. We have already discussed the features inside the Infotainment System above and will now be enlisting some of the Important Interior Features.
On the outside, the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan carries forward its distinctive European styling. The exterior design of the Tiguan won't win any fashion contests or style awards but it has that understated premiumness in the way it looks. That being said, the Tiguan does look handsome from all angles with its precise Lines and well put together body.
At the front, the 2019 Tiguan gets its familiar triple-chrome slot VW grille flanked by slim LED headlights with LED DRLs. The brushed metallic accent on the front fender and the deeply-sculpted hood-lines do add some character into it though. A bold shoulder-line running from the front-wheel arch to the rear highlights its length while the chrome window-line adds that European elegance into its profile.

At the rear, the Tiguan keeps things simple as straightforward as usual with slim LED tail lamps, chrome badge and twin chrome-tipped exhausts. You also get a rear spoiler at the back. While all the other three rivals here especially the Honda and Mazda try to be a bit sporty, the Tiguan stands out with its distinctive classy design. It has the perfect proportions into it, it neither looks large nor small and also possesses a balanced character. Yes, it's not outright sporty or aggressive but it's not dull either.
Exterior Features
The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan has a good set of exterior features which is in line with the other Volkswagens present in the US. The R-Line Trim and the other trims of the Tiguan have small exterior differences between them. Other Features include
Along with its redesign in 2018, the second-gen Volkswagen Tiguan also significantly builds upon its safety and reliability. Underpinned by Vollswagen new MQB platform, the 2019 Tiguan is not only stiffer than its first-gen model but also gets an active suite of safety features on tap. While the base model is mostly bare-bones, the second trim-level; the “SE" unlocks healthy driver-assistance like forward-collision warning, rear-cross traffic alert, blind-spot monitor and automatic emergency braking.
The aforementioned features are also available with the base model through the optional "Driver Assistance Package''. The higher SEL and SEL-Premium models also include niceties like adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane-departure warning, adaptive headlights and surround-view parking camera. Because of intensive safety features, the IIHS rated the 2019 Tiguan as a "Top Safety Pick+''. SOme of its highlighted safety features are listed below:
There is no denying the Fact that the Honda CR-V is one of the best SUVs in the segment. It flaunts an easy to understand infotainment system and best in class storage space. The CR V additionally has a rich lodge that offers two lines of seating and has enough space to oblige grown-ups. the CR-V is efficient, quick, offers good comfort and is also better to drive than the Volkswagen here. However, the Tiguan however is big on torque and the 4Motion AWD makes it a better proposition on the road less taken.
The Mazda CX-5 is one of the most Sportiest SUVs in the segment. The Mazda offers one of the best 2nd row seating arrangements in the class as well. When it comes off-road ability, both the SUVs are nearly matched and have potent 4WD systems. The Volkswagen Tiguan scores high on the infotainment System it has on offer and offers the added ability of Carrying 7 people on board. However, the Mazda CX-5 is more premium, comfortable, efficient and importantly more fun to drive than the Tiguan.
The Chevrolet Equinox is the American answer to what is essentially a market dominated by European, Korean and Japanese SUVs. The Equinox offers good fuel efficiency and way more space in the Interior for both the 1st Row and 2nd Row of passengers. The Volkswagen Tiguan has more power on tap and also the ability to ferry 7 people. The Tiguan also feels the better built among the 2 and the 4Motion AWD system makes it the better SUV among the 2 for off-roading. Not only is the Tiguan more tech-laden, its also the more upscale and comfortable among the duo.
If you are looking for a comfortable and premium compact-SUV which not only has a rich tech suite but can also fit in your kids with extra seats at the back, the 2019 Volkswagen is not a bad choice at all. It looks plush, is comfortable to drive, has an abundance of features and also offers good cabin and cargo space. However, if you are looking for better efficiency, top-class reliability and optimal value for your hard-earned money, the Honda CR-V would be a more sensible pick.
