Overall Rating
The Volvo S60 has built its portfolio amidst all odds. With a starting MSRP of $36,050, the midsize sedan from Volvo makes up for a strong lead in the diminishing yet struggling SUV dominated market.
For decades Volvo was committed to safety and sustainability even before it became mandatory. The S60 is a perfect example that simplicity no longer has to mean unexciting. It takes design cues from the bigger S90, giving it a sleek and elegant exterior. Keeping with the brand's reputation for safety, it comes with a suite of advanced safety tech and all the latest electronic gadgetry as you’d expect from a premium midsize sedan.
We’d suggest going with the T6 Momentum, You’ll be getting the most out of your well earned $40,000. Also, on a side note, we’ll recommend optioning a few of the additional packages offered by Volvo as well.

In total, you get about 6 trims in the regular S60. All the T5 badged S60s come with an inline-4 putting out 250 horsepower. Moving up, the T6 offers a slightly powerful 316 horsepower twin-charged gasoline motor while the top of the line T8 hybrid bumps the power to 400 horsepower. The flagship Polestar engineered S60 gets 416 horsepower, a modest boost across the lineup.

The range starts from $36,000 for the base T5 and goes all the way to $48,000 for the R-design AWD. Both the hybrid and Polestar variants cost significantly more than these and are worth the money if you’re looking for modest looks and adequate performance.
We Recommend
We’d suggest going with the T6 Momentum, You’ll be getting the most out of your well earned $40,000. Also, on a side note, we’ll recommend optioning a few of the additional packages offered by Volvo as well.
The regular Volvo S60 comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 cylinder engine pumping 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
Moving up the trim ladder gets you a turbocharged and supercharged variant of that engine, delivering 316 hp and 295 lb-ft. Moving over to the hybrid will get you a motor-assisted version of the powertrain bumping power figures to 400 hp and 472 lb-ft. The Polestar version further increases the power to 416 horsepower with relatively the same amount of torque.

As standard the Volvo S60 gets an 8-speed automatic driving the front wheels. However, an optional AWD system is available across the lineup. In terms of outright power, the Alfa takes a decent lead with its 280 hp engine. Although the rest of its competitors use similar 4-cylinder units, the Alfa’s RWD setup does provide sporting credentials.
Having a fairly modest engine output, the Volvo S60 offers decent acceleration figures. It takes 5.0 seconds for the 2019 Volvo S60 to hit 0-60 and continues the run to finish the quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds. These are in fact respectable figures for a midsize luxury car.

Braking too is rather impressive in the S60 taking 127 feet to reach a complete stop from 60 mph. Out of its competitors, the Volvo happens to be the quickest to 60 mph but slows down a bit in the quarter-mile. Both Alfa Romeo and Mercedes show equally good results by finishing the run in 14.1 seconds.
The Volvo S60 is not the most exciting sedan to drive. It’s rather stately in its appeal and shows its muted character rather proudly. Flooring the pedal lets in a lot of engine noise. It’s never a pleasing experience to hear a 4-cylinder under stressed conditions. There is a fair bit of road noise entering inside. Steering of the Volvo S 60 is heavy and transfers very little feedback from the road regardless of the drive mode you’re in. Double wishbone in the front and Macpherson strut in the rear are pretty good in soaking up bumps. Overall, the entire driving experience is sedate rather than thrilling is how we’d conclude.
Despite having modest performance figures, the Volvo S60 manages to offer impressive efficiency numbers. The Volvo S60 is rated a 29 mpg combined by the EPA which is certainly a tier above the rest of its competitors.

However, the Volvo does come with the smallest tank of all its midsize rivals. This in turn affects its range slightly. That said, the Alfa despite having the larger fuel tank manages to offer less range as opposed to the Volvo. Both the Lexus and Mercedes offer a generous 17.4 gallon fuel tank, enough for a range of over 450 miles.
The Volvo S60 is a classic example of simplicity. There’s nothing fancy going on inside, no swooshes or extremely overdone dashboard layouts, instead everything is laid out neatly.
You get a massive touchscreen previously seen in the Volvo S90 and XC90. Materials inside are of the highest quality and the overall fit and finish is befitting its European roots.

Alfa has the most plain interiors amongst the cars here. Mercedes, as per usual offers a fine mix of luxury and sophistication. Lexus has a rather dated interior which is in need of a proper redesign. However, we’re inclined towards Volvo's minimalist interiors and prefer other manufacturers try and replicate the same. Here’s a list of interior features on the Volvo S60:
The S60's small screen (only a 7-inch display is available) and a multitude of buttons make the center stack feel uncluttered unlike its competitors. The touchscreen infotainment unit comes with Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa connectivity, and Dynamic Navigation.
The Infotainment system itself feels slick enough and responsive to touch inputs. However, it may get laggy at some instances. Sunlight legibility is good as well and reading data and information from the massive touchscreen, won't be much of an issue. Some of the infotainment features include:
The exterior design of the S60 is yet again a perfect example on how to remain elegant whilst keeping things simple. There’s not much happening and many would question whether the exterior is a bit too dull, however, once you have a good glance, you’ll have second thoughts.
The Thor-hammer running lights offer distinct appeal while the C-shaped tail lights add width to the car. In essence, the S60 is a scaled-down version of the larger S90.

In terms of its competition, the Alfa looks rather sporty thanks to its Italian roots. Mercedes has a very clinical design, typical of Germans while the Lexus has a very awkward redesign done on its exterior that was best left untouched. Out of all the cars here we’re inclined towards the Alfa and Volvo for its sporty and sedate looks respectively.
Volvo is known for advocating safety unlike any other. The S60 is no exception. The 2019 S60 model earned the highest score in all IIHS crash tests along with top "Superior" rating in front crash prevention. Based on those results for the 2019 S60, it is safe to say that this is one of Volvo’s top cars when it comes to safety and reassurance. Some of the safety features offered include:
No matter how we choose to assess the comparison, purist drivers will always consider Alfa Romeo as their first preference. But once things get serious and you are looking for more comfort, safety, and all things sugary you might end up buying this Swedish Beaut.
From a glance, both might feel similar but a closer look shows these cars have different characters, and it is up to you to choose what suits you.
Even though both cars are quite similar in driving dynamics and luxury in general, the higher torque output shown by the Merc on paper definitely makes us question how the car might actually end-up behaving on the road.
The almost similar weight of these two cars also adds to the speculations. Between these two, making a choice harder than words can describe. However, the minilatic design of the Volvo edge over everything else.
The Volvo V60 is for those who prefer the underrated design and modest performance. The car packs all the latest safety features and electronic gadgetry common to cars of this era. However, if you prefer spirited driving and care less about how reliable a car should be the Alfa is a serious option. Opting for the Mercedes is not a bad idea as well, it adds better dynamic abilities whilst offering a lot more interior tech.
