Overall Rating
In spite of being a wagon the makers of this vehicle have made the drive experience similar to the S60 sedan, only that the V60 has an extended cargo space.
Station wagons may not appeal to a mass audience, still, there are some core fanatics who love everything about this segment. In the American market or any other market for that matter it is unusual for a Wagon to be sporty. This Swedish company wants to break that barrier and prove that even a Wagon can be sporty. Introduced around three decades ago the current generation V60 is powered by a wide variety of turbocharged powertrains. Front wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional on the 2019 Volvo V60 Wagon.
We would recommend you to go with the T5 dynamic variant which comes with all-wheel-drive as standard and a long list of safety tech. The price is also reasonable. The Volvo V 60 comes with two engine options, the standard T5 and performance oriented T6. The T5 powertrain produces 250 hp and 250 lb feet of torque. In the V60 you would find a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine which is capable of generating 316 horsepower and 295 pound feet of torque this makes your wagon not only sporty but also keeps the onlookers surprised. It has more than enough power for a daily commute and it is unexpected for wagons to be so. It comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth shifts and hence we recommend it.

The 2019 Volvo V60 wagon is the smaller variant of the bigger V90 wagon. It shares most of its underpinnings with most of the Volvo models like the XC90, XC60 and S60 sedan. The T5 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which generates 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and sends power to either the front or all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The T6 R design comes with 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and standard all-wheel drive. There is a climate and sports package which adds different amenities to the car like additional safety and convenience features. The T6 also features R-Design-specific outer trim such as the grille, rear fascia, and silver window surrounds and roof rails.

Under the hood of a Volvo V60 wagon you would find an unexpected engine, we mean it in a good way. An extremely powerful 2.0 liter turbo engine that generates a whole lot of power for a Wagon. Both engines come mated to an Eight-speed automatic transmission which drives the front wheels and four-wheel drive is optional.
The shifts are seamless and power is evenly distributed over the whole rev range. The T6 engine always has power when you need it, and the gearbox is almost always in the right gear, whether you're in Standard mode or Dynamic mode.

TheAudi All-road has better power delivery when compared to the Volvo V60 and the Audi also produces more torque. The Subaru Outback and VW golf are way down in terms of power output and so is the price difference. The Subaru is almost half the price of the Audi Allroad.
The bigger engine which produces 316 horsepower can sprint the V60 from 0 to 60 in just 5.5 seconds which is faster than most of the rivals. Its standard engine can take to 60 mph from standstill in just 6.5 seconds. A 400 horsepower T8 plugin hybrid variant is speculated to launch later this year which will offer lively performance as compared to other variants and it will most probably be the best offering in the segment.

The Audi A4 Allroad takes the flag with the shortest acceleration time, clocking it to the 60 mph mark in just 5.9 sec, followed by Volvo V60 which is a second slower i.e, 6.9 sec. The VW Sportwagen takes the third spot because of its low curb weight while the Subie comes last. With timings of 7.7 seconds and 9.9 seconds respectively.
The spirited exterior design of V60 is complemented by the dynamic performance of the turbocharged T5 powertrain. In the front, you get a double wishbone suspension and in the rear, you get a multi link suspension which makes it composed like a sedan. The ride is firm with the adaptive dampers, yet the body control is excellent on corners. Steering is well weighted but it feels rubbery while turning the car. The cabin remains quiet over bumps and the undulation is well muffled, it is meant to be a comfortable cruiser rather than outright sporty.
Volvo offers four drive modes—Eco, Comfort, Dynamic which helps you to manipulate engine power, automatic gearbox, steering, brakes, stability control system .You can even create your own combination with Individual mode. The all-wheel drive system is tailor made for wet and wintery roads plus it provides traction for instantaneous acceleration.
The brake feel is soft yet they feel powerful. Volvo V60's braking remains consistent with repetitive use and inspires confidence in the driver. You can push it into a corner and it will not roll, but remains composed like a sedan. The V60 comes with an emergency braking system that automatically activates maximum braking in case it senses a head-on collision, which is potentially lifesaving.

There is not much of a difference in terms of braking performance, but you can consider VW as the best performer here because of low curb weight, even though we do not know the distance it takes to come to a standstill.
The Volvo's turbocharged engine has a very decent mileage, it puts out 316 hp and is able to return 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Its bigger supercharged and turbocharged engine delivers 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The supercharged engine gets slightly lower estimates because of the higher power output but that extra punch is worth it.

The figures obtained by V60 beats the Audi A4 allroad, the Volkswagen Golf sportwagen offers the best mileage in its class with readings of 29 miles to a gallon in city, 37 miles to a gallon on highway and a combined mileage of 32 miles to a gallon. However, the tables turn over when we come to compare the ranges that these wagons offer, Subaru outback takes the lead as it is equipped with a larger fuel tank that accommodates 18.5 gallons.
The Volvo V60 from the inside takes design cues which were established by the S90 sedan. Designed to delight the cabin is created from upscale material and highlights include a 9-inch touchscreen flanked by unique air vents which features a vertical metal finish. The interior is sleek with contrast stitching and elegant driftwood treatment
The 10-way power-adjustable orthopedic seats not only look superb. Infact, they surpass every rival in terms of comfort. Power lumbar support and memory setting are also standard features on offer. The front seats are designed to support the spine and provide exceptional comfort all along the torso. The shape of the backseat is perfect and it provides more legroom than any of the other vehicles in this segment. The cabin is spacious and individually controlled heated seats mean every occupant has an equal level of comfort.

All the cars in consideration are wagons and it is a well-known fact that wagons accommodate 5 individuals each, so further going into the competition we will have a look at the dimensions of the seats that they have to offer. The Subaru Outback is the most spacious from the inside as compared to the rivals. Others are somewhat similar in terms of interior dimension. Apart from the interior room they have to offer there are creature comforts and interior features, the details of which are mentioned below:
The V60 comes equipped with Volvo's Sensus infotainment system. According to sources, it is 50 percent faster than the previous variant in terms of processing speed and hence it is more responsive.
You get reduced startup time, faster access to backup camera and jitter free navigation. It comes with the following amenities as well:
The V60 has 23.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which is less room than the previous generation offered. However, its maximum cargo capacity of 50.9 cubic feet is much higher than the previous generation's 43.8 cubic feet.
That said, these are still lower estimates than what its competitors offer. For all wagons the cargo room offered will be a vital parameter for potential customers to decide on. It could be the crux of their purchase decisions and hence a Wagon should not let go this aspect of its offering.

The Subaru Outback has the highest amount of cargo space - 35.5 cubic feet. Followed by VW Golf sportwagen and Volvo V60, that offer 30.4 and 23.2 cubic feet of space respectively. If you are planning to buy an Audi A4 Allroad then think about cargo capacity, as it has only 13 cubic feet to offer.
The V60 like its bigger siblings is based on Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) which accounts for a stylish design like sedans. The transformation from sedan to wagon hasn't changed much apart from its rear and carries Volvo's design language exceptionally well. A prominent character line along the rear fenders helps to differentiate the V60 from the V90 in styling. The sizes of these two vehicles are anyways two extremes.
The Volvo V60 has a unique design that adorns a concave grill which is up-right between its sweptback headlights. The headlights of almost any Volvo look like that of Thor's hammer. The long-hood, low-slung body, with the classic Volvo hallmark of a wide and muscular shoulder line makes the car look lower than it actually is. The athletic stance of the V60 is 4.9 inches longer and 2.0 inches wider than the outgoing model, also the wheelbase has grown to 3.8 inches more.

The Volvo V60 is largest among the lot with the heaviest curb weight and similar to the Subaru Outback. The Audi A4 all road also matches in dimension with the latter. The VW sportwagen is shortest with the lowest curb weight. Keeping the dimensions apart there are a whole lot of features that the Volvo V60 has to offer, few of them are mentioned below:
Known to be the world's safest brand, Volvo has gotten decades of research to make their offerings even more safe. Your Volvo S90 comes with comprehensive IntelliSafe technologies as standard, including all the safety you'd expect from a Volvo. Those features can see what the driver cannot.
The Audi A4 Allroad is similar to the Volvo V60 that offers driving dynamics of a sedan with the utility of a wagon. The A4 Allroad is the only wagon offered by Audi and you have acknowledged its taller height.
The German wagon is smaller than the V 90 and also costs less. The Volvo offers much interior space while Audi can be thought of as an extended hatchback, a more economical one.
The Subaru Outback is a decent alternative to the pricey V60. It has one of the largest cargo in this segment, spacious cabin and comes with loads of standard features. The ride is comfortable and you get all-wheel drive as standard, unlike the Volvo.
The Outback also comes with state of the art Japanese technology like Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology and also an upscale cabin.
The Sportwagen offers the driving dynamics of a popular Golf hatch with extended cargo capacity. Powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder which puts out 170 hp and 199-pound feet of torque.
The VW Sportwagen is priced lower than the V60 and proves to be a budget alternative. If you can live with little less horsepower than nothing is better than the VW.
The Volvo v60 wagon is a beautiful package that has every aspect covered. It combines decent performance, fuel efficiency along with style. As we have seen above even the interiors are plush and are absolutely noteworthy. It is very utilitarian and suits people who want to stand out in the crowd. The Volvo V60 has one of the best cabins in its class and is loaded with tech and features. Of course the V60 has one of the highest base prices in its class and rivals have more cargo space, but a wagon so beautiful why would you choose anything else.
