Overall Rating
With a 4.4L V8 under the hood of a rather simple looking body, the Germans sure know how to design an underdog.
Looks can be deceiving and BMW has the perfect representation of it in the form of the all-new 2020 M5. The 2020 BMW M5 gets a handful of upgrades, which is justified enough as the sedan is set to undergo some major revamps in 2021. The 2020 BMW M5 gets new standard features such as a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, real-time traffic info, remote services, and wireless device charging.
Speaking of prices, the 2020 BMW M5 is available in 2 variants- Base and Competition. The Base trim comes in at a price of $102,700 whereas, the M5 Competition's price starts from $110,000. This is excluding the $995 destination fee which the M5 invites. For leasing, consider the 2020 BMW M5 to cost you around $1299 per month for 36 months, with a 10% payment due at signing. With one of the lowest price points in this segment, the M5 talks serious business and battles it out with rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, Cadillac CT6-V, and Audi RS 7.
Both the base and competition trims are pretty much the same, with subtle modifications to the suspension, colored exterior panels and a valvetronic exhaust system.
The Competition trim is our choice as the $7300 premium is totally worth it. It improves handling, gives an imposing stance and makes its presence felt with the throaty exhaust note. At the same time, the M5 Competition is more fun to drive as well. A courtesy of its more performance-oriented tuning.

2020 BMW M5 is available in two variants. The Base comes in at a sticker price of $102,700 and the Competition at $110,000. Both the variants are almost identical with a few key variations. For starters, both M5 and M5 Competition source power from the same 4.4-liter V8 and get all-wheel drive as standard. But that is about it.
The Competition variant has not only been aesthetically modified with bits on the outside. Its engine too has been tuned to bump up the power but the torque remains the same. The suspension has also been tuned up for better stability at corners.

Both the Base and Competition trims are pretty much the same, with subtle modifications to the suspension, colored exterior panels, and a Valvetronic exhaust system. So it is really a choice of how engaging you want your M5 to be.
The Competition trim is our choice as the $7,300 premium is worth it. It improves handling, gives a commanding stance and makes its presence felt with the throaty exhaust note and at the same time being more fun to drive as well.
"Driving enjoyment is maximized here with lively and direct steering, a well-controlled (borderline stiff) ride, and heroic cornering grip." - Car and Driver
The 2020 BMW M5 is powered by a 4.4-Liter Twin-turbocharged V8 that is an absolute hooligan and belts out a bonkers 600 hp and a peak torque of 553 lb-ft. The 2020 M5 is the first iteration of the model to have an All-Wheel-Drive System which has an adaptable Rear Wheel only mode.
Hardcore M5 fans will surely miss the lost manual gearbox which made it so much fun to drive. An M differential shifts power between the four wheels to keep traction afoot. But all is not lost as the rear-wheel-only mode makes sure the car goes sideways!

The Bimmer’s cousins and its American brother are powered by V8’s. All of them are turbocharged with the M5 having the biggest engine of the lot at 4.4L. The Mercedes-AMG E63 S takes the top spot here with 603 hp and stays on top of the pyramid along with the M5. But the Cadillac CT6-V takes over the torque game with a whopping 640lb-ft at 3400rpm. All the sedans are powered by an automatic transmission with manual override.
The new All Wheel Drive Transmission helps shave a lot of time off this Bimmer’s 0-60. The 2020 BMW M5 can go from 0-60 MPH in 3.2 seconds, making it the quickest in this segment with a quarter-mile time of 11.1 seconds. This is courtesy of a very cunning body structure and adaptive transmission setup which helps it catapult with such ferocity without even looking the part!
The 2020 BMW M5 has a distinctive personality with the sole purpose of providing maximum driving pleasure. It has very direct steering and the ride is stiff, not the uneasy type but more of the casual type. The M differential works its magic in the corners with exceptional levels of grip. All of this doesn’t make this Bimmer any less of a luxury sedan.
In Comfort mode, the M5 puts on a rather subtle mask. The adjustable M suspension gives the liberty to choose from three distinctive modes ranging from daily cruising to expressive fun to drive feel.
The M5 delivers 15 miles in the city and 21 miles on the highway for every gallon of gasoline. Sum up these figures and the 2020 BMW M5 is good for a combined 19 mpg, which is pretty decent given its competition. With the various driving modes available, the Bimmer can be tuned to act differently. Thus, unleashing the hell out of itself only when needed. This adaptive character helps in saving fuel.
Furthermore, the 2020 BMW M5 gets a fuel tank capacity of 20.1 gallons which lends it an impressive highway range of 422 miles. Hence, the M5 is a good tourer that can take you a long distance before finally seeking a refueling stop.

Having the largest engine of the lot doesn’t stop the M5 from returning a commendable fuel economy that is at par with its competitors. The AMG E63 S fuel economy figures are similar to that of the M5, thereby, ranking at the top of the lot.
"Getting into the M5 is a breeze. The aggressive side seat bolsters up front aren't much of an impediment, nor is the sloping roofline for rear passengers." - Edmunds
The 2020 BMW M5's interior offers you six color options which include three shades of brown, black, Silverstone, and smoke white. The interior also mimics the exterior, simple and elegant but is a lot more luxurious. Surely, the Germans like to hoon while being chauffeured! With leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber on the list, BMW surely knows how to bring the interior together.
The front row seats are optimized for aggressive driving with contours to hold the occupants in place. The rear seats are shockingly comfortable taking into account its purpose, and both are covered in leather.

While its German cousins sacrifice the rear seating for a Sportback look or better dynamics, the M5 puts in a lot of effort to keep it as comfortable as possible. The Cadillac CT6-V is the only other competitor that focuses on comfort but it loses a lot on performance. The Bimmer manages to create a balance between hooliganism and comfort.
The M5 has 18.7 cubic feet of cargo space which is decent in a performance sedan and with a 40-20-40 split rear seat setup it can be modified for much more volume. This much space is good for fitting in 2 large suitcases, 2 small suitcases, and a set of golf clubs.
The M5 features 10.2-inch high-resolution infotainment with the latest iDrive software. It is located in the driver’s field of view and has a rotary knob on the center console to control it. The driver also has all the controls for the infotainment at his fingertips.
It is coupled to Harman Kardon sourced 16-speakers and provides 16 speaker Bowers and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound Speakers as an option. Apart from the focal display, the 2020 M5 also features a new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.Â
Some of the most eminent interior and infotainment features of the 2020 BMW M5 are:
"From the outside, it looks much like a standard 5 Series sedan with only a few badges to distinguish between the two. But under the skin, the M5 is a different beast." - Edmunds
Talk about a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The BMW M5 is a sober-looking car, there is no denying that fact. An untrained eye would find it difficult to differentiate a 5-Series from the M5. There a few subtle changes like the redesigned bumpers, lip spoiler, quad exhaust setup, and the unmistakable M branding.
The M5 boasts of a Carbon fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP) roof which helps in drastically reducing the curb weight along with a lower center of gravity and improved rigidity. It has a plethora of color options for the exterior, eleven to be exact.
BMW has gone forward with the deceiving looks on the latest M5. It clearly doesn’t look a part of a performance sedan. At 195.5 inches, it is the shortest of the lot. It doesn’t try to shout out its characteristics and has a humble appearance until driven! Subtle add ons like a lip spoiler and black painted exterior panels help it differ from the 5-series.

The 2020 BMW M5's dimensions make it the shortest of the lot but that doesn’t compromise on the interiors. It also helps in shaving off a few pounds and making it the lightest. Cadillac is the largest of the lot in terms of external dimensions.
Some of the most noteworthy exterior features of the 2020 BMW M5 are:
The NHTSA or IIHS haven’t yet crash-tested the 2020 BMW M5, but we do expect nothing less than a “good” rating from them. The M5 offers various safety features and driver-assistance technology that rebuilds your faith in BMW all over again.
BMW has not compromised on safety and all the top-notch safety features come as standard. BMW’s Active Protection System detects imminent accidents and prepares by automatically pretensioning safety belts, closing windows and moonroof, and activating post-crash braking including fatigue and focus alert features.
Some of the most eminent safety features of the 2020 BMW M5 are:
The only competitor which knocks on this Bimmer’s doors. It has a marginal bump in power output as well as the price. But it has a certain set of characteristics which makes it stand apart. To start with, it has a very throaty exhaust note which is enough to know of its presence.
The power is also distributed in a more aggressive manner which makes it an untamed animal in front of the rather decent( I dare say!) M5. This Merc is for the set of people who like their cars outright brutal with no split character whereas the M5 has two faces which can be swapped at will.
The Audi RS7 is a pretty good performance sedan but the fact that it cost nearly $8000 more than the more powerful BMW M5 makes it a bummer! With more curb weight and less interior space it doesn’t have much in its favor. The M5 is a clear more practical and powerful car here.
The American doesn’t even stand a chance in front of the M5. The only wild card it has is the extravagant seating and interior space. But we know for sure that it's the last thing on a person's mind who is in the market for a performance sedan. The hoonigan scores here.
With a tempting price tag of $102,700 and 600 horses on tap, the BMW M5 brings a very lucrative deal. Also, the due importance is given to luxury and safety truly holds up to its category of performance sedans. If looks are only secondary for you and serious performance from your comfy 5-seater sedan is the first thing on your mind, then the M5 is most definitely the one for you.
