2020 BMW M850i Review

Pros

  • Plenty of might from twin-turbo V-8
  • Pleasure drive with extravagant ride quality
  • Elegant Interiors

Cons

  • Poor front headroom and cramped rear
  • Clumsy navigation software

Perfectly in tune with the time, M850i deserves to the BMW flag-bearer. Unleashing fury on the road, it is a true racecar with a dual purpose. The rarified coupe segment has a new monster with style and attitude backed by ultimate driving pleasure.

Overview

The Bavarian brand has mustered virtually every niche with its model’s lineup. The 2020 BMW M850i, part of the 8-series lineup is a large and luxurious coupe that marked the return of brands driver-centric ideology. This BMW flag-bearer uses the fire-breathing twin-turbo V8 for the ultimate road-tripping adventure. Powerfully nimble and surprisingly comfortable, M850i has plenty on offer for an MSRP of $111,900.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

With the revival of 8-series in 2019, M850i captivates the enthusiasts with the dynamic and over the line performance than 840i and others. With BMW trademark design and minimalistic interiors, M850i truly focuses on performance and performance only. Priced at $111,900 excluding the destination charges, we will see if the six-figure price tag feels justified or not.

With a might V-8 powertrain and trademark “M” expertise, BMW has crafted M850i to be the best. However, it depends on how you define the best. Based on the BMW ideology, best is the precision, power, and perfection. The wider stance and tall order of BMW M850i greet you with plush interiors. Plush enough but not luxuriously plush.

What do we recommend?

The 2020 BMW M850i is one of the best coupes in the segment with the utmost performance and technical perfection on offer at $111,900 (MSRP). However, the flamboyance and charisma need to be added at your own cost to upgrade the minimalistic cabin.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

After a tête-à-tête with the M850i, the flagship coupe from BMW we can say its plenty. The M850i feature a 523-hp 4.4L twin-turbo V8, eight-speed automatic, and standard all-wheel-drive. The combination impresses us with a lightning-quick drive and face-pulling acceleration. BMW has built a reputation for silky smooth and responsive powertrain, M850i is a prime example of it.

Likewise, the transmission is quick to react and adapt to the driving conditions with no revolt. The stoicism and smoothness of the transmission allow bimmer to be a road rager from a gentleman, in a blink of an eye. The sport exhaust system in place amplifies the demonish culture of bimmer with a growling soundtrack.

The Mercedes coupe example, S63 is a run machine with maximum might on offer. Taking on the bimmer, S63 is a mad monster that shadows the bimmer’s fiery attire. However, for not so spirited drivers but coupe lovers, Audi RS 5 is the right way to begin and even the Japanese reliability with LC 500 seems to be an equally aggressive drive.

How fast is the new BMW M850i?

BMW M850i with 523 hp at 5,500 rpm and 553 lb-ft from 1,800 to 4,600 rpm is a prodigious accelerator but that depends on your right foot. All that force is transmitted to all four wheels via the ubiquitous eight-speed automatic transmission. The intelligent all-wheel drive is reverse biased and continuously variable depending on the driving conditions.

The BMW M850i takes 3.6 seconds to touch 60 mph off-the-line. That is quick, that not just neck-snapping but hair raising acceleration. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, for your own safety. Though, in the case of M8, the top speed is enhanced to 190 mph.

But if you think it is fast, Merc S63 is even faster with 3.4-sec time-stamp for dashing to 60 mph. Another German trail with a 3.7-sec 0-60 mph time, making it hard for the speed ardent to pick the favorite.

Is handling as good as other Bimmers?

The grand-touring promise delivered by the M850i is complemented by a supple, supremely quiet and surprisingly athletic ride. The Driving Dynamic Control offers Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport modes. In just one click the bimmer transforms from being a “Bruce Wayne” to “Batman”. The linear steering feedback is direct and adaptive to the driving modes and conditions.

Also, the adaptive dampers allow extra flexibility and make the M850i remarkably stable with gripping cornering in the stiffest settings. Toggle the springs to comfort and all the road-imperfections vanish. From tarmac to track, springs acknowledge the change with stiffening response.

The M sport differential grants this all-wheel-drive an added confidence through better control. The advanced tech such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), including Brake Fade Compensation, Start-off Assistant, Brake Drying, and Brake Stand-by features with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) makes this powerful machine a responsible companion.

What about the Braking performance?

M850i, the nomenclature suggests the use of M sport brakes. The ventilated discs on all four wheels with the anti-lock braking system delivers the best braking performance, balanced with the performance. The pedal feels firm and is well-calibrated to enhance the feeling of absolute confidence.

Step hard on the brakes and you will be impressed by the mannerisms of this Bimmer. The coupe maintains a linear path under heavy brake application and there is little sway from the path. Nosedive is very well contained and the stability on offer is just fantastic.

However, on the street brakes might feel grabby but on track, the brakes are perfectly practical. With no issue like fade, brakes on BMW M850i inspire confidence. The sexy sheet metal is a heavy-duty drive but remains stable even on hard braking with little or no nose dive.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The mighty mill under the hood of M850i, driving all wheels takes a toll on efficiency in absolute terms. The EPA rating of 20 mpg combined is not that bad for the class. However, the Mercedes S63 with more might showcase better efficiency with 20 mpg combined. Audi RS 5 tops the list but don’t forget the lack of power in comparison to the rest.

However, for efficiency, the intelligent all-wheel-drive comes in handy. The AWD switches character, diverting all the power to the rear-wheels for improving the fuel economy of BMW M850i while on the street or cruising on the highway. Tap the pedal and M850i turns thirsty to supplement your drive with the thrill you expect.

Interior

For all of its enticing premium qualities, the 2020 BMW M850i coupe seems to outgrow itself with a performance-oriented lifestyle. The two-door 8-series signify BMW’s intention of sporting dynamics, also can be witnessed in the driver-oriented cockpit styling. The low volume niche is primely motivated by style and BMW M850i does not disappoint. The minimalist BMW design uses luxurious touches and high-quality materials all-around.

The coupe model has 14-way power-adjustable heated front seats to your comfort and customizable ambient lighting to match your vibe. Available upgrades add extravagant glass control and additional high-end materials.

However, the low roofline impedes the headroom in front and the vestigial rear seat is no good for adults. Also, the rear outward visibility isn’t great. That’s a tradeoff with fashion and style on offer. The Mercedes S63 and other pricier options like Aston Martin DB11 offer plush luxury, unmatchable in every context.

What are the most noteworthy features of the M850i?

There are a plethora of features as standard in the new BMW M850i as standard. Some of the most notable ones include the following set of creature comforts:

  • Merino leather upholstery
  • The instrument panel with Nappa Leather finish
  • 3-spoke leather-wrapped multi-function M sport steering wheel
  • Dynamic Cruise Control
  • Rear-window defroster
  • Outside-temperature display

How does the new M850i fare on the infotainment front?

Like every other well-equipped BMW, M850i cabin includes wireless features, remote services, and intuitive technology. The latest generation of iDrive infotainment system is a child’s play and extremely logical. The control options from the physical knobs, touch display, steering-mounted buttons or voice recognition system is a huge advantage. However, not so fitting is the wasted space on BMW’s new digital instrument cluster. Also, the panel is overcrowded with so many redundant controls.

At times what is more irking is the onboard navigation system which feels clumsy to understand in comparison to a more refined version from competitors. Alternatively, Apple Carplay connectivity can be used for using personal applications. No Android Auto for this class seems harsh on android users. Audiophile can boast the available Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround system.

Key Infotainment Features

  • 3" instrument cluster, and 10.25" central information display.
  • Wireless charging
  • Wifi-hotspot
  • Apple Carplay
  • USB connections
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Connected Package Professional

What about the Cargo carrying capacity?

The interior cubby storage is facilitated by the presence of a coverable tray at the front of the center console, central bin, and sufficient door pockets. The cargo space behind the rear seats could manage five carry-on bags. The trunk volume in M850i seems to be adequate considering the coupe style. This big bimmer is truly not a supercar but a big coupe which makes it more than practical.

Also, when there are two people on-board, the rear-seats have a 50/50 split. This flexibility allows for easier showing of larger cargo. The big fat-hip of M850i coupe accounts for 14.8 cu-ft trunks.

The coupe-style at times may be considered a supercar with all that heft and might. But that’s not the case for bimmer, thanks to its wider dimensions. The Japanese example of Lexus LC 500, however, justifies the true definition of a supercar with a sleek attitude. But that costs the trunk volume as well, with just 5.4 cu-ft of available space it kills the practicality of LC 500.

Exterior

The BMW M850i coupe’s extreme vigor is equally complemented by the tall order, 4,478-pound heft. The bulging hood and those wide snarled nostrils define the might it carries, in just one glance. The low and purposeful stance gives a husky presence to bimmer on the road. However, the C-pillar somewhere reminds of the Ford Mustang. The potent looks, however, feature some pseudo-design elements such as false vents in front and rear fenders. But we are not disappointed, ultimately it makes bimmer look much crazier and appealing.

Ideally, the doors would open longer and B-pillar won’t appear, but the bimmer looks handsome. What’s more enticing is the all-important front three-quarter view.

9.9/10

BMW M850i Vs Mercedes-Benz S63

The rarified coupe segment features more Germans, all fighting for the top spot with their unique appeal. The Mercedes-Benz S63, for us, is the halo car for the segment. The S63 with mightier might, luxurious craftsmanship and impeccable ride quality is more than plenty. We mean it. The S63 in comparison to BMW’s M850i is a more luxurious, spacious and better handler than the bimmer. However, it is also a pricier option. BMW M850i may not be the best but it has everything one may need in a coupe combined with German precision, at a much lesser price.

BMW M850i Vs Audi RS 5

Priced aggressively at $74,200, Audi RS 5 coupe is a lighter and smaller offering in the segment. Using the twin-turbo V6 produces a thrilling 444-hp but suffers from engine lag. Audi RS 5 is a capable handler and offers a well-finished cabin for the price. However, comfort on offer in the front does not match the performance stance. Overall, the BMW M850i is a better package but for beginners, Audi RS 5 place a stylish option at much cheaper rates.

BMW M850i Vs Lexus LC 500

The Japanese have a knack of making more than safe and reliable machines, true loyalists. The Lexus LC 500 presents itself with a 471-hp twin-turbo V8, which seems a bit overrated for the V8 which is capable of much more. Cutting it loose, LC 500 offers an extraordinary cabin design and upscale interior material. Also, it is effective at being sporty and comfortable at the same time. For the price, the segment has fewer options and Lexus can definitely bank upon it. However, if you have a knack for Japanese reliability, LEXUS LC 500 is good, to begin with, but keep in mind it offers the least customization and isn’t economic to drive.

Final Verdict
9.1/10

BMW has enamored the enthusiasts base of loyalists with the formidable M850i. From, how it operates, to how it drives, to how it radiates absolute technical perfection, the M850i is a true resurrection of 8-series. The twin-turbo V-8 is dynamic yet captivating and frighteningly fast. However, so focussed to be the best BMW, this coupe forgets to be a great luxury. The need for vanity and more pomp to justify the price tag feels inevitable. As it stands, it is probably the best in the business but we will have to look out if it gets equally heartening welcome from the segment.
