2020 BMW X3 Review

The 2020 BMW X3 is powered by a 2-liter inline-4 engine capable of pushing out 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the twin-turbo setup, the peak torque is achieved very low in the rev-band.

BMW once set the standard high with its exclusive wagons especially the 3 Series Wagon which became one of the highest-selling vehicles in its luxury class, not only in the US but around the world. Today, SUVs rule the minds of the American audience and the X3 has rightly enjoyed top-spot in the compact luxury crossover segment. The 2020 BMW X3 outshines courtesy of its strong acceleration, high fun to drive factor, premium interiors and enough room to seat five in relative comfort. It is one of the highest-selling luxury SUV, thanks to a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which makes X3 30i capable without compromising on the mpg.

For 2020, BMW X3 returns mostly unchanged with a base sDrive30i starting under $42,000 and an all-wheel-drive version, xDrive30i with a $2000 premium over the base price. BMW privileges X3 to wear M badge in the form of BMW X3 M40i and BMW X3 M, the performance-spec version for those who want extra oomph from their practical family SUV. The interiors and a strong built of X3 feel absolutely premium but relatively lacks the finesse and style when compared to some of its German competitors. The closest rivals include the likes of Volvo XC60, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLC class.

BMW X3 sDrive30i sends the power to the rear wheels as standard while the X3 xDrive30i gives you additional traction of the AWD setup. The 2020 BMW X3 is powered by the same turbocharged engine as its predecessor. It feels strong, refined, and offers a punchy performance. For features, X3 scores a 9 for having ample standard features, a long list of extras, and low maintenance cost. The 2020 X3 starts just above $40,000, which is not cheap but the standard equipment list justifies every dollar. The X3 is also offered in a more powerful and sporty version, the X3 M40i and X3 M.

We recommend the X3 xDrive30i trim for its all-terrain capability, thanks to the intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Although there is literally no other difference between the two trims, the extra traction could come in handy during tricky situations.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

Be it the all-wheel-drive xDrive30i or the rear-wheel-drive sDrive30i, the BMW X3 draws enough power to beat any traffic situation from a 248 hp 2-liter turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine. Under the hood, one can find the tried and tested 2.0L turbocharged engine in the 30i trim. The engine feels buttery smooth and it delivers power linearly even though there is a turbo cramming in the air for increased power output. Even for a turbocharged motor, the throttle response is immediate. Put your foot down and there’s an immediate downshift and the X3 flies away.  The engine is complemented by a slick 8-speed automatic transmission unit which offers clean and crisp shifts.

The peak torque is offered at a very low 1450 rpm and the max power touches as high as 6500 rpm. This means that X3 accelerates progressively to overtake in traffic and also cruise on the highway at much higher speeds with ease. That being said, the X3's top speed is limited to 130 mph.

When it comes to comparing these vehicles in terms of engines, there is not a lot to differentiate. All of these vehicles are powered by 2-liter 4 cylinder engines producing roughly the same amount of power and torque. The Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC class beats the X3 with better torque figures, giving them an advantage of more instantaneous acceleration. However, the price to power ratio is the best if you buy the Volvo XC60 SUV.

How fast is the BMW X3 off-the-line?

For luxury compact crossovers starting above $40,000, X3 possesses ample horsepower and a quiet powertrain. From urban cities like New York to the snow-covered states like colorado, X3 sDrive30i, and xDrive30i has you covered. The X3 acceleration is quick but not exhilarating and for that additional thrill, you must opt for sportier M versions of X3.

The BMW X3 trails in the 0-60 mph test when compared to its rivals. BMW claims X3 takes flat 6 seconds to go from 0-60 mph but in a real track test, the 2020 X3 xDrive40i took 6.2 seconds to achieve the milestone. Volvo's small crossover manages to beat the Mercedes GLC in a 0-60 mph race. The 2020 Q5 manages to run the quickest quarter-mile in the group mainly due to its Quattro all-wheel-drive system and additional torque advantage.

These numbers don’t really matter all that much as these vehicles are not meant to make runs down the drag strip. However, the 2020 Mercedes GLC series and the Audi Q5 are quickest of the lot, taking under 6 seconds to get to 60 mph from standstill.

How is the ride quality of the BMW X3?

The 2020 BMW X3 offers a very calm and composed ride on almost every terrain. The car feels planted all the time. The BMW X3's suspension manages to soak up most of the bumps and even big impacts without even breaking a sweat. with that said, the suspension has an underlying sporty edge to it which is quite noticeable when you hit the corners hard. The BMW X3 sticks to its line and for the kind of heavy SUV this is, it rides fairly flat and inspires confidence to the driver. The ride quality of 2020 BMW X3 is well balanced with enough stiffness for aggressive feel without compromising riding comfort.

The X3's steering is light and direct, however, it feels a little nervous at higher speeds. That being said, it is one of the better electronic steering systems out there at this price point. BMW X3 is able to maintain BMW's trademark of fun-to-drive family cars and precision performance out on the road as well as on the track.

What about the braking system on BMW X3?

With all the weight these small luxury SUVs carry, it is imperative that they are equipped with brakes that complement the other aspects of the vehicle. The 2020 BMW X3 is equipped with 13-inch rotors in the front and in the rear. These brakes manage to bring the 2020 X3 to a complete stop from 60 MPH in 114 feet. BMW equips the X3 with standard 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), composite front rotors, and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), brake-pad wear indicators and Cornering Brake Control (CBC) to improve its braking performance.

Both the sDrive30i and XDrive30i exhibit similar stopping prowess and are equipped with a similar braking setup. For a family, X3 is a confident companion as it has strong brakes for panic stops, thanks to large rotors. The nose-dive is well-contained under heavy braking which further inspires confidence.

The Volvo XC60 has the largest front brake rotors in this group. At 13.5 inches, the GLC’s rotors are only a tiny bit smaller than the Volvo’s. Even though the Mercedes weighs the least in this group, it takes the longest distance to stop. The Benz could have been equipped with better brakes. All in all, the BMW is equipped with pretty decent brakes. Read more about the engine and performance of 2020 BMW X3.

Interior
8.0/10

The BMW X3 is a compact SUV with a smaller-ish footprint. But the BMW designers have engineered a clever and space-efficient design that opens up ample room inside the 2020 BMW X3 for a comfortable ride. The single option X3 comes well-equipped which further accentuates its stylish interior. BMW X3's cabin is spacious all-around and provides comfortable seating for 5.  Seats in the front row are well cushioned and aptly bolstered to hold you tight with adequate support. Behind the front seats, even a 6-foot tall person can be comfortably seated but accomodating three in the rear is a big ask. There's more than enough legroom in the X3's rear row, good enough for a tall seating position. There are various adjustment options for the perfect seating position. The available lumbar support only adds to a more elated experience inside BMW X3 30i.

The 2020 BMW X3 cabin stays quiet even when cruising on the highway, thanks to the excellent acoustic insulation. Vibrations are well controlled inside the cabin but some amount of wind noise can be heard around the ORVMs. The suspension also does very well to masquerade road imperfections bumps.

When it comes to numbers related to the interior space, the Volvo XC60 offers the most amount of space in both the front and the rear passenger's seats. This can be attributed mainly due to the boxy shape of the vehicle. All these SUVs can easily carry five on a short trip but the rear middle passenger might feel a little uncomfortable on longer journeys. The BMW X3 cabin is handsome and put together competently but still lacks the luxurious feel of more stylish Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC series. Read more about the comfort features inside the 2020 BMW X3.

Is BMW X3 30i a practical compact luxury crossover?

Even for a small luxury SUV, the cargo capacity of X3 is class-average. The 2020 BMW X3 offers 28.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the second row, enough to haul seven carry-on bags. The flexible rear seats can be folded down to release around 62 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the first row. What adds to ease of cargo access is the X3's lower lift-over height. The underfloor storage is very limited due to the full-size spare wheel on offer. However, the 2020 X3 is a versatile SUV because of its generous cargo space and ample internal storage options.

There are numerous door pockets and cubby holes in the BMW X3, large enough to hold big 1L water bottles. Also, a small storage option on the left of the steering wheel comes in handy for small knick-knacks.

Exterior
7.0/10

The BMW X3 with its sleek and contemporary styling keeps the head-turning-quotient high even without breaking any new ground. The signature "kidney grille" has grown wider and intakes are now even bigger. As per need, the active grille opens and closes automatically to adjust the airflow. The size of the grille received polarizing reception from the mass but in flesh, the BMW X3 is a looker. Riding atop 18" wheels and 8.0-inch ground clearance, X3 has a tall-stature with good outward visibility. The 2020 BMW X3's exterior dimensions are average in the class but translate into a spacious cabin.

In terms of size, the X3 slots right in between the BMW X2 and the X5. It measures up a total of 185.9 inches in length and 74.4 inches in width. The ground clearance is very impressive at 8 inches- enough to go over most of the obstacles. The wheelbase is also plenty which means more room for the passengers. A good ground clearance allows BMW X3 to be an adventurer and a capable off-roading SUV.

As far as X3's dimensions are concerned, all the vehicles in this compact segment are evenly matched. Most of its rivals size up to 185 inches in length and 74 inches in width with the exception of the Volvo XC60 which is wider. The Mercedes GLC disappoints with a low ground clearance of just 5 inches. While you might not have to think before taking these vehicles off-road, the Merc might scrape its front bumper even over small rocks.

Features that will keep on-lookers hooked on the outside

BMW has been famed for speccing their cars with the best in terms of features and the 2020 X3, follows the same suite. You will find a long list of features on the outside of the X3 and includes the likes of the following features

Should I buy 2019 or 2020 BMW X3?

Competition
7.0/10

2020 BMW X3 vs 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC series

When Comparing the BMW X3 to the Mercedes Benz GLC, there is not a lot to differentiate. Both the GLC and the X3 are very impressive vehicles. Both of them offer a good amount of luxury and comfort to the passengers. Even in terms of money, there is not a lot to differentiate these vehicles. As far as ride quality is concerned, the GLC is slightly better. In terms of tech, both the Merc and the BMW are very well matched.

2020 BMW X3 vs 2020 Audi Q5

Picking between the Audi Q5 and its German counterpart X3 is troublesome. They are similarly valued, convey a satisfying driving experience, and offer a far-reaching set of highlights. If you want a feature-loaded cabin without paying a lot, the BMW will be the better option. In case you're after a more pleasant interior and tech-laden cabin with the best in class Infotainment System, the Audi Q5 could be THE SUV for you.

2020 BMW X3 vs 2020 Volvo XC60

Volvo makes one of the most low-key and minimalistic vehicles on sale. The XC60 is no exception. As a package, it is very impressive and offers a great value for your buck. Even the interior is very clean and simply laid out. In terms of tech, the BMW is far better than the Volvo. Volvo’s infotainment system is also pretty good for the most part but it starts to glitch after a while. It can surely do with a bit more processing power. Overall, the Bimmer is a much better option.

Final Verdict

BMW sedan's sporty driving dynamics are brilliantly showcased by its SUVs now. The 2020 BMW X3 is the perfect example of the German automaker's dual personality of ultimate driving fun along with its luxurious feel. The BMW X3 faces stiff competition from the Mercedes Benz GLC, the Audi Q5, and the Volvo XC60 SUVs which are equally capable and comfortable vehicles. All of them offer a similar amount of power, comfort, and tech on the inside. Even in terms of price, not a lot can be said to differentiate them. However, when it comes to quality, Volvo slightly falls behind the Germans. To pick one from the bunch, the Audi Q5 offers the best overall package while X3 is the most indulgent and enjoyable compact crossover. Also, the 2020 BMW X3 is one of the most fuel-efficient luxury crossovers.
