Overall Rating
The XT4 gets the same turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine paired to the standard 9-speed automatic gearbox. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional just like the last year model. The power figures are also the same at 237 hp and 258 lb.-ft. torque.
The first generation of the Cadillac XT4 made its debut in 2019. The 2020 Cadillac XT4 is part of the same generation. The 2020 XT4 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor with only minor changes. For example, a couple of safety features that were otherwise optional have now been made standard across the range.
We recommend the Sport trim as it is the best of all options. It gets the all-wheel-drive system along with the trim-specific adaptive dampers. All that is offered at the same price as the Premium Luxury variant. So, in all, the Sport with the AWD makes the most sense.

The three variants of the 2020 Cadillac XT4, Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport share the same mechanics. All of them derive power from the same source, a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine that makes 237 horses and 258 lb.-ft. torque across the range.
Also common in all versions is a nine-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels as standard. There’s an optional all-wheel drivetrain on offer too, and all variants can be equipped with it by spending an additional $3,000 on an average.
Neither of the trims is loaded with features to boast about. However, several additional packages are available for all variants that include features like heated seats for front and second row, while the massaging function is reserved only for the front row. Adaptive cruise control is also available as an option.

Powering this well-built crossover is an equally healthy and capable powertrain. The turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine of this five-seater makes 237 hp and 250 lb.-ft. torque. There are no other engine options available for this Cadillac, not that it’s needed anyway.
The standard turbo-four on this SUV paired with the 9-speed automatic, also a no-choice option, drives the front two wheels of all variants of the XT4 with much ease. There’s an optional all-wheel-drive system on offer across all ranges of the XT4 too.

It’s the only SUV in this stand-off to get a nine-speed automatic transmission, where most others are equipped only with either a six-speed or an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Experts are yet to review how strong the punch delivered from this year’s XT4’s engine is, but last year’s model managed a 0-60 miles per hour in about 7.5 seconds when paired with the all-wheel drivetrain.
That same model from 2019 clocked a quarter-mile time of well under 16 seconds. So it’s known for a fact that this SUV from Cadillac is quick enough to cause some excitement, but its competitors are known to be quicker.

What is also known for now is that this SUV from Cadillac is one of the least polluting among the rest of the competition. The XT4’s carbon emission has been rated at 6.8 which, as compared to the MKC or Envision, is significantly less.
When it comes to braking, all other crossovers in this segment get at least 13-inch brake rotors at the front wheels and 12-inchers on the rear wheels. So the XT4 should also get similarly sized brakes. If anything, don’t be surprised if it gets even bigger brakes considering the XT4’s weight.

The XT4 is, however, going to adapt the electronic braking system, the same as last year. From what is known so far, this function does reduce stress on the engine but somehow interrupts response from the pedal.
The numerous cogs on the XT4 make it a very comfortable SUV for all-round driving. Also, the 2020 Cadillac XT4 features two driving modes. There’s the Tour drive mode and the other Sport mode. Both modes alter the pedal response to modulate effort and feel.
While in touring mode, the throttle becomes noticeably lazy and feels numb. On the other hand, the brake pedal starts to feel too sensitive. However, switching to Sport mode does not help a lot either. The pedals feel pretty much the same only the engine appears to be more lively.
The XT4 isn’t a sharp steering Cadillac, and a lot of it has to do with its weight. The steering wheel is also not set-up for days on the race track. Overall, this Cadillac is not meant for speeding and cornering sessions.
On the flip side, the things that make this Cadillac want to stay away from track result in a very comfortable SUV for those relaxing drives. The standard dampers do a good job of absorbing the bumps. At the same time, the amount of body control is also quite contained. The Sport variant of the XT4 can be had with the continuously-variable dampers. So surprisingly the Sport trim can prove to be all the more comfortable.
Considering how comfortable the XT4 is to drive, it’s only a let down that the MPG rating of this Cadillac as compared to its competitors is only average. The other crossovers in this segment are more or less just as fuel efficient, but they offer better performance.

The XT4, on the other hand, is the least exciting of the lot. With the front-wheel drive, this SUV can manage a combined MPG rating of 26 miles per gallon. The optional all-wheel-drive variant can manage only 24.
The 2020 Cadillac XT4 handles better than it drives. It is also very comfortable on the inside. This gateway car to the Cadillac's crossover lineup offers plenty of space inside the cabin. There’s ample headroom in the first as well as the second row. Both the rows also offer plenty of legroom too.
Though in the second row, two people will have more room to breathe than three. The seats that the occupants will be sitting on are also very comfortable. A leather-like upholstery comes as standard on this XT4, but leather upholstery is an option.

Regardless, the XT4 feels fairly upscale on the inside. The materials used on the inside feel durable. The doors, dash and even the center console are wrapped in material nice enough to match the standard of other rivals.
The standard 8-inch infotainment screen is quite responsive and is also easy to read thanks to its bright display and crisp images. The infotainment system features the following tech:
Along with the about average fuel efficiency of the XT4, the other thing not helping this SUV’s case is its storage capacity. The Cadillac XT4 does have a spacious cabin, but the trunk is just not as spacious.

Where other competitors offer more than 25 cubic feet of boot space, the space in the back of the XT4 maxes out 22.5 cubic feet. Not that it isn’t spacious enough, but it’s definitely not worth making a statement.
Besides the comfortable seats and the relaxed driving dynamics, the 2020 Cadillac XT4 offers the following comfort features:
The Cadillac XT4 is a fairly good-looking crossover. It has the kind of presence that an SUV must have. Upfront is the big grille with the brand’s traditional crest-and-wreath badge. At either side of the grille are the LED lights that extend out from the bumper, and stretch all the way down to the fenders.

Even the hood is quite angular and good to look at. At the side unlike most SUVs with plunging rooflines, the XT4 definitely looks surprising but in a rather good way. While at the back-end of the XT4 the tall taillights merge with the Xt4’s short overhangs. It is clearly visible from looking at the XT4 that it takes inspiration from the Escalade but does away with most of its boxiness.
The 2020 Cadillac XT4’s most noteworthy exterior features include:
Officials have not yet fully crash-tested the 2020 Cadillac XT4. However, from what is known a lot of the safety tech that were optional before are now standard. The safety features that the XT4 offers are:
Both these SUVs are powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four engine, but the MKC makes more power and torque than the XT4. Other than that, the XT4 manages to come out as the better crossover considering the fact that it’s more fuel-efficient. However, when it comes to practicality, the MKC has a much bigger trunk than the XT4. Also, because of all the extra power that the MKC is quicker of the lot. The MKC is also a good $2,000 cheaper than the XT4.
The Cadillac XT4 is a better all-around package than the Buick Envision. It offers more features, has a more powerful engine, and is also more fuel-efficient at the same time. But the XT4’s cargo capacity is smaller than the Envision. Also Envision is less expensive than the XT4.
The Cadillac XT4 ticks all the right boxes. It’s capable, practical and adequately comfortable. But it does not deliver the sort of exclusivity that would make this SUV standout. Even the base variant of the XT4 is significantly more expensive than some of the higher-level variants of its competitors. At the same time, other SUVs in this segment boast more capable engines and better usability.
