The bold and voluminous Fiat 500L for 2020 is placed with 160hp 1.4L engine powering front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission for just $22,250.
The Italian little mouse returns for the 2020 model year with almost no change, starting at an affordable price of $22,250. The design of fiat 500L has been derived from the Fiat 500 Topolino and is a large version of its elder sibling 500, a mini car, which has been discontinued for the 2020 model year.
The Fiat 500L manufactured in Serbia is available globally in four trims Pop, Trekking, Urbana and Lounge, all equipped 1.4L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine powering front-wheel drive through a 6-speed automatic transmission. For all-wheel-drive, aspirants must look towards 500X. The 500L Trekking adds protective cladding at the bottom and reflects a sporty look. With a price difference of only about $3,000 between the Pop and Lounge, a buyer can have a significant upgrade across all trims at value pricing.

The Pop exhibits Uconnect 4 with 7-inch display, 6-premium speakers, communication system supporting AndroidAuto, AppleCarplay and Bluetooth integrated with voice command along with seats wrapped in cloth upholstery, Chrome / Leather-Wrapped Shift Knob, driver and passenger height-adjustable seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted controls. The interior looks conventional and frugal, not reflecting a bold image as the exterior does.
What do we recommend?
The Fiat 500L is placed with similar powertrain configuration in all trims and comes loaded with overwhelming standard interior features. It certainly lacks power for how big it is. Also, it doesn't offer thrill drive as proclaimed by the automaker. The best pick would be the Pop, it is best had as cheaply as possible.
The 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine generating 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque powers the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission is the only option available for the 500L. The powertrain has not evolved since ages and produces only adequate power for 500L to be steady in the city and not maneuver on the highway.

Thanks to the considerable heft, 500L does not respond well to the 1.4L turbocharged engine, otherwise on par with the economy cars. It is neither quick nor efficient.
For people expecting the 500L to be as quick as its elder sibling, disappointment is on its way. The singular powertrain with 160 hp-setup is inadequate for a fully loaded 500L, the ride is comfortable and feels energetic otherwise.

The outright height and bulky structure placed with a 1.4L four-cylinder engine are only sufficient for a family ride and inhibit quick maneuvering.
The 500L is a front-wheel drive, not quick to respond and lacks stability in an alarming situation. The 500L holds an image of utility car and isn’t confidence-inspiring but is safe enough.

The Fiat 500L performs average in this category and reminds that the driver needs to be cautious while riding a fully loaded 500L at higher speeds.
The 500L designed for comfort and space clearly justifies the utility of the small station wagon. Although, 500L ride is smooth but not for long-distance journeys, due to flat and hard seats.
It is reasonable, but the longer wheelbase and tall stature inhibit 500L from turning rapidly. NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) is quite higher as compared to other small wagons, hatchbacks, and crossovers which offer a more enjoyable ride.
As stated above, with relatively higher curb weight and tall built, the 1.4L turbo isn’t efficient for 500L as it was for a smaller 500. The mpg rating isn’t satisfactory for the Italian wagon as compared to the competitors.

The inexpensive Pop may not remain as pocket-friendly as the buyer would expect when it is on the road.
The 500L is out of the league when it comes to interior space, with it offering a comfortable ride is like a cherry on the cake. Easy in and out access facilitated by bigger doors along with exceptional headroom, legroom and shoulder room, both in front and rear, easily accommodating all five adult passengers.
Though the seats are hard and flat which literally is a pain in the arse. Long family journeys might kill the fun, with tired passengers waiting to jump out of the car.

The interior is normally a bright spot for Fiats but how smart is Fiat 500L? The entry-level Pop trim includes a 7.0-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto capability along with the rear back-up camera and 6-speaker audio system. Moving up the ladder adds a Beats audio system and satellite navigation.
For someone buying a station wagon, a question arises that “How 500L copes with people and clutter?”. Clearly, the raison d'être of 500L is its enormous space.

The voluminous rear combined with the flexibility of 60/40 seat split which can fold flat and be tumbled, maximizes the cargo volume. This category raises the comparison bar of 500L with an SUV.The 500L scores above average for its competitive and practical boot space.
The Fiat 500 series is an Italian trademark design. With the Cinquecento influence, the Fiat 500 and 500X are a treat to the eyes but the automaker seems to have saved time and effort while designing the 500L. The 500L simply put is an elongated and bloated version of the mini 500. The tall and bulky body design does not provide for better ground clearance, rather looks oddly proportioned and inhibits the performance.
The 500L design symbolizes space and offers a comfortable ride. It can easily accommodate tall ballers who can use the huge cargo volume for their sports kits. Also, the design accompanies better passenger outward visibility.

Trekking model adds rugged-looking styling cues, 17-inch wheels and ambient LED lighting. Moving up to the 500L Lounge showcases unique wheels, power mirrors, and chrome styling pieces instead of plastic or aluminum effect in the lower trims.
The 500L predecessors faired well in the crash tests. The 2020 model comes with six airbags with various electronic aids to prevent an accident in the first place. These include stability control and tire pressure monitoring. The 500L lacks advanced active safety features other than the rear parking sensor.
The 500L doesn’t have complete crash avoidance & mitigation test data due to its low sales volume. The 500L scored “Poor” for small overlap front on the driver’s side and “good” for other crashworthiness traits from IIHS.
The Kia Soul scores better than the 500L in almost every aspect. The Kia Soul comparatively offers a smooth and comfortable ride. Also, Soul can be optioned with two livelier engines apart from the base engine for someone looking for more power. The KIA is king, with it providing better options and add-ons than 500L. Further, when it comes to safety and reliability Soul beat its rival. Clearly, Kia Soul is the first choice.
The Toyota CH-R for 2020 model year is all the way more stylish than Fiat 500L. Although nothing much has changed in the 2020 model year. The Toyota CH-R surprisingly flaunts cheeky interiors. Anyday, 500L will beat CH-R for better drive, passenger volume and boot space. But the CH-R is pocket-friendly, with better MPG ratings.
The 160 hp 1.4-liter turbo-4 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission in a front-wheel-drive performs suboptimally for 500L. It is neither powerful nor efficient. It runs sluggish but offers a responsive driving dynamics combined with uncomparable space within the segment.
For people looking for inexpensive subcompact SUV with all-wheel drive and much higher safety score, 500X is the solution. With declining sales, FCA must introduce additional advanced active safety features along with incentives across all trims which might land the 500L from the dealers’ store on to the streets.
