Overall Rating
Genesis has given tribute to Toyota Century and Volvo lineup with the introduction of 2020 Genesis G90. The front fascia gets new set of headlights that resemble “Thor’s Hammer”.
You learn from your mistakes, identify your strengths and re-organize yourself to head closer to your goals. That's exactly what the 2020 Genesis G90 is all about. Three years after its launch in 2017, the widely acclaimed Korean Flagship gets a redesign therapy for its 2020 model.
The earlier G90 was already a delightful composition and was widely acclaimed for its comfort and opulent lineage. However, with the redesign treatment, majorly on the outside, the 2020 G90 adds the missing flair and presence to its already beloved composition.
The 2020 G90 delivers every bit to its MSRP of $72,200. It's comfortable, opulent, has peppy and refined powertrains and is loaded with goodies as well. Most importantly though, it now looks as plush as it rides and is as fluid in the premium accent as a Mercedes S class, BMW 7 series or the Lexus LS.

No alterations to the trim structure and you can get this Korean beauty either in the 3.3T Premium or 5.0 Ultimate as earlier. The demarcation among both these trims is their specific power plants and some additional creature comforts in the 5.0 Ultimate. Both the trims come standard as rear-wheel drive only, but can be paired with the optional all-wheel drive. Prices start at $72,200 for the 3.3T Premium and $75,700 for the 5.0 Ultimate.

The 3.3T Premium makes a more sensible option over the 5.0 Ultimate. There's barely an influencing difference in the feature list of the Premium and it checks all the boxes at its price and class. Most importantly, it's 3.3 liter turbo engine offers better efficiency and is more punchier to drive than the Ultimate’s 5.0 liter V8.
Unlike its more diverse and generous rivals like the 740i or S class, the 2020 G90 is propelled by two adequately powered engines. Powering the 2020 G90 is the familiar duo of a 365 hp 3.3 liter twin-turbocharged V6 and a 420 hp naturally aspirated 5.0 liter V8. Blessed with a blistering tune, the archaic V8 is easy-going and might seem as aesthetically more desirable in a flagship to most of its buyers. However, it's the turbocharged V6 that hits the sweet spot with its overall engagement.
The turbo V6’s refinement, power delivery and efficiency gives it an added advantage over the V8. Most importantly, the V6 allows for a lighter nose that is easy to flick around corners. Common to the present day turbo-culture, startups in the V6 are accompanied by a small hint of turbo lag. Though, once raged-up, the turbo feels as potent and grunty as its naturally aspirated subsidiary.
Neither of the powertrains are ring-acers, but they pack just the right amount of power to haul this beast all day long. An 8-speed automatic transmission felicitates smooth and linear power delivery with either of the engines without any hush around shifts. The gearbox is a bit laid-back and holds the gear-ratios a bit longer, but compensates that fairly with its impressive smoothness.

Tuned for relaxed cruising, the G90 might not boast LS 500 like power figures, but its responses to your right-foot commands are overwhelming enough. Both the engines feel more refined and punchier than the 740i and have a composure similar to that of the S class.
Luxury flag bearers like the G90 are not ideally crafted for aggressive driving sessions. That being said, these palaces on wheels are not any sloth either. Case for the 2020 Genesis G90, It sprints from 0-60 in an acceptable 5.4 seconds.
The 2020 G90 might be the lowest among its rivals, but it's sprint time is fair enough for its class. Surprisingly, the numbers are almost identical with either of the engines, however, the turbo V6 feels a bit swifter than the V8. Thanks to its low-end torque, strong mid and low range along with a marginally shelved weight.

Rushing down all the nitro available in its powerful 416 hp engine, the Lexus LS 500 turns out to be the quickest among the lot. Part thanks also to its shorter wheelbase and efficient power-to weight ratio.
Out on the streets, the 2020 G90 strongly rubs its shoulders with its esteemed Eurasian rivals. The ride is very soft and comfortable which is further complemented by insulated cabin leading to great tranquility inside. The comfort tuned standard adaptive dampers and five-link suspension smooth out rough roads with grace. Though it might not tacle bumps as effortlessly as a Mercedes S class, it keeps the serenity inside the cabin always under check. Surprisingly, it does all the good things, even with the 19 inch rims on.
On longer stretches, the G90 feels very planted and composed, but that's not the state of affairs all the time. Push it violently around curvy sections and it resists with a significant body roll. However, a precise and nicely weighted steering wheel compensates for the body movements with a better control and response between the chassis and the wheel
Guarding all four corners of the 2020 Genesis are ventilated discs accompanied by ABS and Automatic emergency braking. The brake pedal is not as firm as the one in BMW 740i or even the S class. However, it is not the most squishy as well and rewards you with decent responses every time you squeeze it.

The segment in which the G90 lies is an elite pool that features the most flamboyant presentation of every specific manufacturer. Needless to say, along with extravagant elegance, all the cars in the competition here are blessed with strong braking apparatus. Complete braking data is not yet available for all the participants, but we presume there won't be much deviation in the stopping prowess of all these flagships.
The laid-back composure of its engine does have an efficient lineage, but the heavy ornamentation does not quite complement the powertrain’s efforts. The 2020 G90’s MPG figures of 17, 25 and 21 in city, highway and combined respectively is not far behind the class average.

All the competitors in the segment have somewhat identical mpg figures, but the BMW 740i takes a small lead forward with its 24 mpg combined. Thanks to the Beemers light-weight body, efficient and more refined transmission as well as better power-to weight ratio.
The 2020 Genesis G90 embraces changes on the inside as well but less severe than the exteriors. The cabin layout remains unchanged from the earlier model, but now features updated materials to ace it up against its rivals. The unison of Nappa leather and suede in contrasting arithmetic looks more premium than ever while the wood and brushed aluminium inlays only add up to its wholesomeness.
Apart from the good outward visibility, the G90’s cabin offers bank-vault like tranquility. Thanks to the Active Noise Cancellation and cabin insulation. It's a luxury flagship after all and keeps passenger comfort at its utmost priority, and its conviction aptly reflects in its actions.
There is plenty of space all-around for occupants to stretch themselves and the wide cushiony seats are a delight to hop into. In-fact, the G90 offers the best in-class first row headroom and legroom. Executive amenities checked, the front row seats get upto 22-way power adjustability and are heated and ventilated too.
The rear seats where most of its buyers would likely be are not as spacious as the BMW 740i, but are not hesitant to offer either. Along with multiple power-adjustments and lumbar support, the rear seats also offer heated and massaging functionality.

Inside the cabin of a luxury flagship sedan what you lookout for, is a super comfortable and premium ambience. On that note, the 2020 G90’s cabin is undoubtedly a very comfortable place to be, but it does not match the fit and finish of its more esteemed rivals.
We would have loved to see Genesis coming up with a refreshed interior layout just as it did on the outside. There's not any pomptuous cost-cutting on the inside and the physical buttons with brushed aluminium finish do look upmarket. However, the cheap-plastic coating on some of the buttons, puts the G90 down.
The 12.3-inch display still serves as the communication hub, but is now touch-operated and comes standard with Apple Car-Play and Android Auto, finally. For those with a bit of an old-schooled taste, there's still a rotary dial in place to navigate through different menus. Apart from built-in navigation, for the first time, Genesis is offering over-the-air updates for the navigation and other infotainment software in the G90.
Other hook-ups to the infotainment system include Bluetooth connectivity, Mirror link, HD radio, Aux input and a CD player inside the glove-box. Audipholies should have no complaints whatsoever as the 17-speaker Lexicon premium audio system sounds fantastic. Genesis says that the GUI in the infotainment system as well as the 10.3-inch instrument cluster offer slick operation and are better than before. We could only wait until we get our hands on the infotainment to verify the claim though.
Chauffeur-driven premium flagships are not supposed to have practicality on the top of their wish-list. None of the cars in this segment offer foldable rear seats and the only area to park your bags is one underneath the rear deck. For the sake of numbers, the 2020 Genesis G90 offers a cargo area of 15.7 cu-ft, which is fair enough, but is the smallest when compared with its rivals.

Among its rivals, it's the BMW 740i that is most generous in terms of cargo space with its 18.2 cu-fts. The equation is pretty simple here, the longer, the better. Since the Beemer is the longest in terms of wheelbase and length, its generosity doesn't seem surprising at all.
Where things have changed the most for the 2020 Genesis G90 is on the outside and it looks nothing like the model it replaces. Genesis has invested a lot of effort into making the 2020 G90 speak what it stands for and its certainly more inviting than its previous model. The wheelbase and overall proportions remain similar, but almost every body panel except the roof and doors has been replaced.
The first and foremost change is the new and massive Genesis grille that will also be seen in the Korean brand's upcoming products. The grille now covers almost the entire vertical section of its nose, but it looks bold and imposing nonetheless. Try distracting your lenses from the grille and you will discover an essence of multiple brands put together.
The new grille along with the lower air-vents somewhat resemble Alfa while the mesh chrome treatment on the grille is very Bentley-ish. The new slim LED housing bisected by a DRL strip instantaneously reminds you of Volvo’s whereas the slim Led tail light bar at the rear reminds of Lincolns. Another height of opulent presentation is the Rolls Royce and Maybach like new dish and web-spoke “19” inch wheels.
There's also a lip-spoiler at the rear deck and the license plate has been repositioned to the lower bumper. Contrary to its beefy face, the rear end is clean, classy and elegant. The side profile is highlighted by a prettifying air-vent that also houses a slim LED strip that lights up with the turn-signals.

Overall, the G90’s transition is not revolutionary but is evolutionary for sure and has evolved in a good way though. Even with similar dimensions, the 2020 G90 looks longer and wider and has much better presence than its earlier iteration. Most importantly, it now gets the estately flair that it lacked to match the class of its rivals.
Top-notch safety parameter is a paramount expectation from a luxury flagship and the G90 has always delivered up to them. Safety ratings are not yet available for the 2020 G90 but it has had a stronger safety footprint in its earlier models. Though the NHTSA has never crash-tested the G90 but its 2019 model was picked as Top Safety Pick + by IIHS.
Also, apart from the upscaling redesign, the 2020 G90 also gets enhanced features in its standard box that were earlier in the options menu. The enhancement is particularly specific in the safety and driver assistance features department. Some of its notable safety features are mentioned below.
The BMW 7 series has been one of the most famed stalwarts among full-size luxury sedans. With the recent update to the 7 series, BMW has only pushed its benchmark a notch higher. Apart from the heavy-weight signature BMW design cues, this flagship Beemer is as equally loaded with goodies as the G90. The 740i is not only quicker than the Genesis but also offers best in-class fuel efficiency, cargo and rear seat space.
Above all, the 740i gets an updated interior layout that looks more upscale than the G90. Where the 2020 Genesis G90 scores higher points than the Beemer is its more powerful engine, better handling and generous front seat room. Most importantly, the G90 serves all its delicacies at a price tag smaller than the BMW 740i
By far, the Lexus LS 500 stands as the definition of an Asian luxury flagship sedan. The LS is well built, has a striking sloping design and is loaded with tons of creature comforts as well. It gets the most powerful engine among its rivals (base model) and is also the quickest among the lot. With the lexus you also get a bigger cargo area, better fuel efficiency and more rich materials on the inside.
However, the 2020 Genesis G90 aces ahead of its neighbour with a more premium interior theme, generous cabin space and better driveability. Most importantly, the G90 gets an intuitive infotainment system in contrast to the LS 500’s cluttered system which is no less than a psychometric test.
The Mercedes S class is undoubtedly the benchmark of luxury standards among automobiles. It looks classy, has an unparalleled presence and is known for its best in-class comfort. It has an upscale and modern cabin that is draped in some of the finest materials. The flagship Merc is not only quicker and efficient than the G90, but has a larger trunk as well. With the S450, you get a plethora of luxury features and tech wrapped in an interior profile that is as luxury as a car could be.
Where the G90 strikes hard is its interior space that is more generous than the S450 despite being 2 inches shorter in length to the Merc. Owing to its lighter weight, the Genesis also feels more controlled and agile. In comparison, the 2020 Genesis G90 is not as prolific as the S class, but at an over $22,000 lower price tag, the G90 promises a composition that is complete and strong enough to stand up against the big Merc.
If you are out in the market looking for a luxury flagship sedan, but you want to stand out from the crowd avoiding the German elite club, the 2020 Genesis G90 is the perfect fit for you. The redesigned 2020 G90 fulfills every single expectation from its class and carries a distinctive presence as well. Most importantly, all its lavishness won't cost you as much as its rivals.
