About 2020 Hyundai Sonata

3.8

Overall Rating

The 202 Hyundai Sonata is now available for sale at a base MSRP of $23,600 and comes with 2 gasoline powertrains and a single hybrid powertrain. Coming in with 4 trim configurations, the gasoline-powered variants get a 2.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 motor putting out 191 hp and the 1.6L turbocharged inline-4 motor puts out 180 hp. The car comes with an FWD drivetrain and 8-speed automatic transmission. A 0-60 mph time of 7.9 seconds and combined gas mileage of 32 MPG are offered by the 2.5L motor.

The Hyundai Sonata has always been one of the most competent offerings of the mid-size sedan segment due to the excellent list of standard features, comfortable interior, and a decent powertrain under the hood. With the arrival of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata, which is available for a base selling price of $23,600 and coming in with 4 trim configurations, Hyundai has managed to retain the ethos of the moniker. Along with that, this updated version now gets a completely redesigned exterior and interior and multiple powertrains including a hybrid, which has been reviewed separately here.

Available for a base lease price of $377/month along with a destination charge of $650, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata comes with 2 motors under the hood depending on the trim that you opt for. A 2.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 motor does the duty in the lower trims and gives out 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. A 1.6L turbocharged inline-4 motor is also available in the SEL Plus and Limited trims, putting out 180 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Competing with the likes of the 2020 Honda Accord, 2020 Toyota Camry, and the 2020 Nissan Altima, we will find out how well the 2020 Sonata turn out, in this in-depth review.

The base SE trim, which starts from $23,600, is decently kitted for the price and is, therefore, the most value for money trim of the lot too. It comes standard with essentials like an 8.0" touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, LED headlights with LED DRLs, 16" alloy wheels, a 6-speaker audio system, and many standard driver assistance features too. With that said, at a premium of around $2,000, you can upgrade to the SEL trim which comes standard with a heated and powered driver seat, USB port at the rear, blindspot monitoring, and keyless entry. Hence, SEL trim is also an equally good option.

Buying Advice

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

It doesn't have trouble keeping pace with traffic or on freeway onramps, but doing so requires more pressure on the gas pedal than you might be used to. -Edmunds

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata comes with 2 engine options. They are a 2.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 motor and a 1.6L turbocharged inline-4 motor. The 2.5L motor comes with the lower SE and SEL trims and offers 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque and the 1.6L turbocharged motor gave out 180 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Both the motors are mated to the same 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission and the FWD drivetrain. Multiple driving modes and manual shifting through paddle shifters are also offered by this transmission.

The Hyundai Sonata had never been considered as the most dynamically sorted offering of the segment. Even though the 2020 Hyundai Sonata has been quite improved from the earlier iterations, it still managed to be not as fun to drive as some of the rivals, due to the vague and lifeless steering wheel and soft suspension setup on offer. The body roll and understeer were also higher than the rivals. Even the ride quality was also not its forte as it was quite jittery, both during slow city driving as well as during highway riding. The 2020 Sonata Hybrid also offered a similar ride and handling.

The 2020 Sonata managed to come out with a 0-60 mph time of 7.9 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.9 seconds. This mid-size sedan also gave out a top speed of 135 MPH. If you opt for the 1.6L turbocharged motor-powered trims, the 2020 Sonata could do the 0-60 mph in a slightly lower 7.3 seconds, making it the fastest offering of the segment. With 12.8" front rotors and 11.8" rear rotors coupled with many braking features like ABS with EBD, ventilated rotors, brake assist, etc on offer, the car gave out a 60-0 mph braking distance of 121 feet. The 2020 Sonata Hybrid did the 0-60 mph in a higher 8.4 seconds.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata turned out to be not as powerful as the 2020 Toyota Camry and the 2020 Honda Accord. However, it was more powerful than the 2020 Altima. Even if you opt for the 1.6L turbocharged motor, the 2020 Sonata is not the most powerful offering of the segment. When it comes to the 0-60 mph time, the 2020 Honda Accord and the 2020 Nissan Altima leads the chart with a 0-60 mph time of 7.3 seconds and 7.4 seconds. The 2020 Toyota Camry also gave out a better 0-60 mph time of 7.6 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds faster than the 2020 Sonata.

Interior
8.0/10

The new Sonata's interior is driver-focused, with the center-mounted display screen canted purposefully toward the pilot. - KBB

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata comes with a brand new interior, in comparison to the outgoing 2019 Sonata. Offered in 2 color combinations, namely black and dark gray, the 2020 Sonata comes with the best-in-class interior quality, with soft-touch plastics, leather, and silver and chrome accents, making it look and feel more premium than all its rivals. The interior is also quite ergonomic and offers a long list of features as standard like dual-zone automatic climate control, sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated and powered seats. The front row of the 2020 Sonata offered best-in-class headroom and legroom too.

Being a 5-seater mid-size sedan, the 2020 Hyundai Sonata also offers a decently spacious rear seat, with the best in class headroom on offer from the segment. However, the legroom and shoulder room were adequate. Along with the spacious cabin on offer, the 2020 Sonata also gave out an excellent cargo capacity of 16 cu ft, making it an excellent tool for those long freeway drives with 5 passengers on board. The features like sunblinds, rear HVAC ducts, armrests with cupholders,  and air filtration system makes it even more comfortable than most of the rivals.

The 2020 Sonata offered the most spacious front row of the mid-size sedan segment. However, the 2020 Accord and the 2020 Altima turned out to be better in terms of shoulder room for the rear seat passenger. The 2020 Camary also offered a superior 38" legroom, which is 3" more than the 2020 Sonata. The cargo capacity of 16.7 cu ft offered by the 2020 Accord turned out to be the best of the lot, which is followed by the Sonata. Both the 2020 Camry and the 2020 Altima offered a lower cargo capacity. The Sonata comes with a 10.25" touchscreen infotainment system and 12-speaker Bose audio system for the higher trims.

An 8" touchscreen infotainment system and a 6-speaker audio system are offered for the lower trims. Both the infotainment systems offered excellent user interface and brilliant display and touch sensitivity, making it the best of the lot. The stutters and lags are minimal too. The connectivity features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, USB, etc are offered as standard. The audio quality is impressive. However, we would recommend you to get the Limited trim if you are an audiophile, as it gets the Bose audio system. Some of the interior and infotainment features on offer are:

  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Bluetooth handsfree with wireless audio streaming
  • Head up display
  • Bose premium audio system with 12 speakers

Exterior
5.5/10

Even if it's not your flavor, you have to respect Hyundai for pulling no punches. This car stands out, and that alone is attractive. - Motortrend

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata looks striking and takes an entirely different approach in the exterior design front, especially in comparison to the outgoing 2019 Sonata, which had a conservative design language. The front view of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata is highlighted by the hexagonal front grille which gets a blacked-out treatment for all the trims except the base SE trim, sweeping LED headlights with LED DRLs, quirky air dam design, and the impressive height and width which helps the sedan to come out with excellent interior space. This sedan is also offered in 7 exterior colors, all of which make it more youthful.

The side view of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata is also completely revamped, with multiple character lines, massive 18" alloy wheels with P235/45R18 tires, blacked-out b pillar, and the coupe-like roofline. The rear view of the 2020 Sonata is the best-looking angle of the lot, as it comes with an LED taillight that gets joined, making it look like a single unit. The shark fin antenna, dual exhaust tips, and masculine rear bumpers also add to the character of this mid-size sedan. The best-in-class wheelbase of 111.8" and length of 192.9" adds to the looks and also the interior space on offer. The curb weight of 3,120 lbs makes it the lightest too.

Safety
9.4/10

The Sonata achieves a five-star overall rating from NHTSA—although its frontal crash result was four-star. - Thecarconnection

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata, which is available for a base MSPR of $23,600, turned out to be one of the best monikers of the segment in terms of safety on offer, as can be seen from the NHTSA and IIHS crash test result. The 2020 Sonata received an overall crash safety rating of 5-stars in the NHTSA crash test, with a 4-star rating in the frontal crash test, a 5-star rating in the side crash test, and a 5-star rating in the rollover crash test. The IIHS gave it the top safety pick title and the sedan got a good rating in most of the subsections too.

In terms of safety equipment, the new 2020 Sonata comes loaded to the brim. It has many segment firsts and rivals some of the premium big saloons on the market. The build quality, in general, feels properly solid and gives a long-lasting feel. Many safety and driver-assistance features like automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, etc are offered too. Some of the safety and driver-assistance features on offer are:

  • Remort parking assistance
  • Forward collision warning assistance with pedestrian detection
  • Lane following assist

  • Blindspot monitoring
  • Driver attention warning

Competition
7.0/10

2020 Hyundai Sonata vs 2020 Toyota Camry

Camry is the safest bet for someone who is looking for a mid-size sedan. It’s reliable, efficient and well put together. Available for sale at a base MSPR of $24,425, the 2020 Camry is also powered by a 2.5L engine, but it has more power and offers better acceleration too. That being said, the base model of the Toyota Camry is over-priced and the features list is quite lacking. The interiors feel a bit dated and the quality is nothing but average. The new 2020 Hyundai Sonata seems to trump the Camry in these aspects and definitely turned out to be a strong contender on many fronts.

2020 Hyundai Sonata vs 2020 Honda Accord

The 2020 Honda Accord is the best-selling mid-size sedan in the United States. Available for a base MSRP of $24,270, it looks smashing, has comfortable ergonomics, equips a smaller but powerful engine, and gets lots of features coupled with the reliability of Honda. It’s an extremely well-rounded package too. The Sonata seems to be following the footsteps of Accord and this new 2020 model would definitely manage to give a cut-throat competition to the segment leader.

2020 Hyundai Sonata vs 2020 Nissan Altima

Available for sale at a base MSRP of $24,100, the 2020 Nissan Altima is a decent mid-size sedan of the segment, due to the good build quality and feature-rich interior, many optional features and packages on offer, and a contemporary design language, all of which makes it a favorite among the family buyers. However, the base powertrain is not as good as the 2020 Sonata. The interior also doesn't feel quite premium. It was one of the least spacious of the segment too. Hence, the 2020 Sonata would be a better bet, as it is an all-rounder of the segment.

Final Verdict
7.5/10

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata is a totally new car from the ground up. It’s based on a new platform which makes it lighter and stiffer than before. It is feature-packed and comes standard with a lot of goodies which makes it an irresistible buy. A new Sonata N Line model is on the cards to make the package even more thrilling. Even though the car lacks a bit in terms of ride quality and driving dynamics, especially in comparison to the 2020 Honda Accord, we would highly recommend the 2020 Sonata, if you want a spacious and luxurious daily driver that offers many features as standard.
